“It's a beautiful night and we call it Bella Notte.” This week Rachel and Adina take it way back in Disney animation to discuss Rachel's pick, Lady and the Tramp. Adina pairs this with a classic California Cabernet Sauvignon that gives back to animal shelters. Rachel looks at other instances in popular media that reference the “iconic” spaghetti scene, and Adina shares the backstories of the dogs who brought our title characters to life. Together they discuss the huge problems they both have with this movie, from racist depictions to terrible dog ownership. So pour yourself a (HUGE) glass, dig into a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs, and rewind back to Lady and the Tramp! Cheers! Tuck in for some Valentine's Day spaghetti and meatballs as Chris and Alex chew on Walt Disney's celebrated cel-animated love story Lady and the Tramp (Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson & Hamilton Luske, 1955), a musical romance released in the mid-1950s and based on the 1945 Cosmopolitan magazine story “Happy Dan, The Cynical Dog” by Ward Greene. The studio's first CinemaScope release and a film that coincided with the opening of Disneyland in California, Lady and Tramp is rife with context and offers a number of threads that speak to the landscape of Disney animation in the 1950s. Listen as discussion turns to the collision in Lady and the Tramp between a refined vs. rough animated style embodied by the film's eponymous characters; its complex anthropomorphic register, and how the film's many canine performances negotiate the meeting point of humanity with the animal through racial politics; caricature and the grotesque within character design, and the silhouetted and symbolic representation of affluence, class, wealth, power, and normalcy; connections between Disney's feature and the Mammy Two Shoes figure from Tom & Jerry; the star voice of Peggy Lee and traditions of animated voicework; and how Lady and the Tramp reflects on the possible ‘threat' of children in suburban America as part of its subversive and radical agenda. Bella Notte! **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

At the time of this recording we are in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Which meant many engaged couples are re-examining their guest lists to accomodate what was safe and/or allowed. But even outside of this pandemic, this decision and topic is important. In this episode Sara and I are determined to share with you all the wonderful things that make a small or intimate guest list great, but also the pitfalls and stresses of it. The great thing is that there is the alternative; hosting a celebration for your full guest list. That doesn't mean that there are any less or more pitfalls and stresses that come with tying the knot with every single person you hold near and dear. Basically, we know that BOTH options are great, and this is a topic that you really do have to sit down and think of the pros and cons.As a logistics expert who’s also a creative, Sara brings a rare combination of skills and savvy to wedding planning. After growing up surrounded by weddings as the daughter of a minister, Sara founded Bella Notte in 2004. She quickly found her passion for planning the kinds of weddings that modern couples in Washington, DC were looking for; stylish and sophisticated while also being creative, quirky, edgy and fun. In her 18 year career, Sara has worked with all varieties of clientele in the DC area, where she has consistently been named one of Washington’s Best Wedding Planners. Her work has been featured in countless news outlets, including Martha Stewart Weddings, People, & Vanity Fair. Of her career, Sara says, “I’m most proud of the fact that I approach every wedding I design as a distinct reflection of my clients’ personalities. This is Deep in the Plus! Each week, we pull a different movie or TV show from the Disney+ vault and tell you the history and the details, plus you give our review and tell you if it’s worth your time. This week, we have a classic for you. It's not a DEEP pick, nor is it the first thing you chose when you logged in to Disney+ for the first time, but it’s Walt Disney’s animated masterpiece, Lady and the Tramp! This 1955 animated classic follows a coddled cocker spaniel named Lady, whose comfortable life seems to be slipping away once her owners have a baby. After a series of unfortunate events, Lady finds herself on the loose and on her own, until she runs into a tough stray mutt called Tramp who teaches her the rules of life on the streets. A romance begins to blossom between the two dogs, but their many differences, along with more drama at Lady's home, threaten to keep them apart. So grab a bowl of meatballs and spaghetti and join us on this lovely Bella Notte, as we go... Deep in the Plus! Lady and the Tramp Lady and the Tramp was the first film distributed by the Buena Vista Film Distribution company. It was the 15th Disney animated feature film, and the first animated feature to be filmed in the CinemaScope widescreen film process. And while it was made in the golden age of Disney animation, around such classics as Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953) and Sleeping Beauty (1959), it doesn't seem to get the same love. Its only presence inside Disney Parks is Tony's Town Square at Walt Disney World, and it's only been Tony's for about 30 years. However, the film did receive a direct-to-DVD sequel in 2001 and a Live Action remake on Disney+ in 2019. So, does this movie deserve to stand with the rest of the animated features of it's time? Watch this episode and decide for yourself. Is this movie for you? Do you agree with our thoughts? And don't forget, in every episode of Deep in the Plus, you'll get bonus recommendations as we present our "Pick of the Week." Welcome to Episode 11, where we cover Chapters 30-32 of The Raven Boys! Both Shannon and Nievita bring the salt this episode! We get into some mild dragging of Dick Gansey the Second, Neeve continues to be a terrible human, we reject the canon of Noah’s shoes, Shannon holds the line as Blue Sargent Defense Squad, and Nievita is just the worst at pronouncing names and doing accents. You’d think by now she’d learn! Note: Shannon only almost caused the car to crash because Nievita put her ice cold hands on Shannon’s face while pretending she was Noah, then laughed so hard she couldn’t see to drive. It was justified on Shannon’s part. One of our favourite things about Disney's animated films here at We Want The D is how they can run the gamut from sprawling, musical epics to intimate, slice-of-life stories; and be equally entertaining and beloved regardless. This week, Vicky, Nolan and Jill watched what, on paper, could be simply seen as a romantic comedy with dogs. But Lady and the Tramp is so much more than just that. It has a timeless quality to it; the beautiful and fluid animation makes it seem like it could have been released within the past ten years, not in 1955; on the flip side, songs like "Bella Notte" sound like they were written a hundred years ago and not specifically for this movie. Sure, there may be some unfortunate baggage when it comes to racist cats...and restaurant owners...and police officers...and chihuahuas. But the charm of this movie and its huge cast of interesting and funny characters more than makes up for it's few shortcomings in our eyes. So grab a big plate of spaghetti, or bones if you prefer, and enjoy a beautiful night of discussion of another one of Disney's best.
