In this episode of The Purposeful Strategist, Belden Menkus speaks with Ben Fletcher, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, about what it means to be the voice for an industry that employs 2.7 million people, makes up around 8–9% of the UK economy, and underpins almost every aspect of daily life.Ben came to Logistics UK from Make UK, the trade association for manufacturing, where a decade of experience at the intersection of government, policy, and industry left him convinced that logistics was the missing link in the UK's economic growth story. In their conversation, they discuss:• Why logistics is the precondition for economic growth, not simply a contributor, and why Ben believes government has yet to fully grasp that dependency.• The organisation Ben inherited: 22,000 member organisations spanning SMEs and global firms, 350 staff, 130 years of history, with a well-regarded vehicle inspection and compliance business operating in a competitive market.• A strategy for becoming the single voice for an industry covering road, rail, air, and sea transport — and on making an economy-wide argument, not just a sector-specific one, to put logistics at the centre of national policy debate.• The role of data and anecdote in political influence: how data gets you in the room, and how the right story from a member gets things done.• COVID as a test of the sector's public purpose — and what it revealed about an industry whose people kept going when most others stayed home.• How AI and technology can be transformative for efficiency in logistics, without replacing the human judgment that still sits at the controls of vehicles, trains, planes, and ships.• Both challenges and optimism for the workforce: an ageing industry, a compelling social mobility story, and a lobbying agenda that's pushing back on the assumption that a university degree is the only route to a successful career. His McKinsey training combined with more than 30 years working at Board and ExCo level gives him both the analytical rigour and the relational experience that complex, high-stakes leadership situations demand.Belden hosts The Purposeful Strategist, a weekly podcast. It explores how senior leaders bring purpose to life through strategy and reflects the same questions that drive the consulting work.

On this day, 13 April 1890, Black dock worker and leading Industrial Workers of the World union activist, Ben Fletcher, was born in Philadelphia. Starting work on the docks in 1910, he joined the revolutionary IWW union three years later and became the lead organiser of its Local 8 on the Philadelphia docks. At a time when most unions were racially segregated, Fletcher helped build a powerful, multiracial workers' organisation which organised a strike in 1913 and won many improvements. In 1918, after the entry of the US into World War I, Fletcher was arrested and charged with dozens of other IWW members for supposedly hampering the war effort. Despite there being no witnesses to testify against Fletcher, he and all the others were convicted. Fletcher was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment, after which he quipped to fellow defendant Big Bill Haywood: "The Judge has been using very ungrammatical language." When Hayward asked him "How is that, Ben?" Fletcher replied: ‘His sentences are much too long.'” His sentence was commuted in 1922, and he immediately returned to Philadelphia to take part in a strike for a maximum 40 hour work week.Learn more about his life and activism in episodes 73-74 of our podcast: https://workingclasshistory.com/podcast/e73-ben-fletcher/And you can find out even more in this book: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/products/ben-fletcher-the-life-and-times-of-a-black-wobbly-peter-coleOur work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon. We'll hear about IWW members building a "Philosophy 101" for organizers, a historian's argument that humanity is fundamentally cooperative rather than selfish, and why getting labor history into public schools may be one of the most important organizing projects of our time. On November 23, 2025, the Sam and Esther Dolgoff Institute (SEDI) hosted historian Peter Cole for an expansive talk on Ben Fletcher, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and the radical legacy of dockworkers' internationalism—from Philadelphia's segregated waterfronts to Durban, South Africa, and beyond.Cole traced the rise of the Marine Transport Workers Industrial Union Local 8 under Fletcher's leadership—the most racially integrated union of its time—and examined how dockworkers used their strategic position in global trade to fight both exploitation and racism. From the 1913 Philadelphia strike that forced employers to integrate the docks, to later IWW-led efforts that spread through the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa, Fletcher's story becomes a lens on class power, solidarity, and the global movement of working people who turned the docks into engines of resistance. The talk also moved across decades and continents, connecting the Wobblies' militant syndicalism to later struggles: the ILWU's desegregation on the U.S. West Coast, anti-apartheid solidarity actions in the 1980s, and the ongoing role of transport and logistics workers in opposing war and militarism today.Peter Cole is a professor of history at Western Illinois University, research associate at the University of the Witwatersrand, and author of Ben Fletcher: The Life and Times of a Black Wobbly and Dockworker Power: Race and Activism in Durban and the San Francisco Bay Area. He is also co-editor of Wobblies of the World: A Global History of the IWW, and a leading historian of labor internationalism, race, and radical unionism. This event was part of SEDI's ongoing speaker series, which brings together radical thinkers, historians, and organizers to deepen our understanding of the past and sharpen our interventions in the present. The Sam and Esther Dolgoff Institute (SEDI): https://www.dolgoffinstitute.com/Explore Peter Cole's work: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/category/author/peter-coleSupport the show

Before last Friday, to know about the 1938 crab pickers strike in Crisfield, Maryland, you had to know about it. This is the story of so many worker struggles in this country; hard-fought fights that unlike other battles – the Civil War, for example – have virtually no monuments or plaques, no visitor centers. But now, on Crisfield Highway, Maryland Route 413, there's an official state historical marker that commemorates the 1938 strike by 600 crab pickers, mostly Black women. On today's show we bring you an audio postcard from the marker's unveiling. Next Saturday, May 18, there will be another unveiling, this one in Philadelphia, of a new mural celebrating Ben Fletcher, one of the most influential working-class unionists, revolutionaries, and organizers in all of U.S. history. We talk with historian Peter Cole, author of Ben Fletcher: The Life and Times of a Black Wobbly, whose work inspired the mural. An 18-year-old driver in Marietta collided with a motorcyclist in Alpharetta on Wednesday. The driver attempted to make a left turn onto Cobb Parkway and entered the path of the 28-year-old motorcyclist. The collision resulted in the motorcyclist being ejected from the bike and sustaining life-threatening injuries. The victim remains in critical condition at Kennestone Hospital, and witnesses are urged to contact the police department with any information. Marietta Superintendent Grant Rivera said that parents are increasingly concerned about school safety, especially after Monday's school shooting in Nashville. The school district has already implemented some safety measures, such as card readers and vestibules, but is considering other options, such as bullet-resistant glass and an open-door monitoring system. The district also works closely with the Marietta Police Department, which currently provides four officers stationed at Marietta High School and two officers stationed at Marietta Middle School, among other collaborations. The district partners with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to conduct threat assessments and creates a nurturing, welcoming environment while prioritizing safety. Several ministers from downtown Marietta churches will be hosting a week-long Holy Week series of worship services at First Presbyterian Church. The services will be held from 11:50 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and will be followed by a free soup and sandwich lunch. Rev. Joe Evans, Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian, invites people to attend and share their love for Jesus Christ during this Holy Week. The schedule for the services is as follows: Rev. Blair Tolbert on April 3, Rev. Brandon Owen on April 4, Rev. Eric Beckham on April 5, Rev. Dr. Tar-u-Way Richard Bright on April 6, and Angela Z. Brown on April 7. He replaces Brian Gregory, who was dismissed after six seasons with the university. Abdur-Rahim is a successful recruiter, builder, and winner who creates unparalleled student-athlete experiences. Although Abdur-Rahim's departure is bittersweet for Kennesaw State, the university is optimistic about continuing its upward trajectory. It has already received numerous inquiries from potential candidates for the head coach role. Kennesaw State's associate head coach, Ben Fletcher, will serve as the interim coach during the search. Abdur-Rahim's base salary was $230,000 in 2022. The Lutzie 43 Foundation hosted its first Adapted PE Field Day event at Kennesaw Mountain High School for Cobb County elementary students with disabilities. The foundation provides a range of activities to ensure that every child can participate regardless of their needs, such as sensory and mobility issues. The foundation's motto, "Live like Lutz, Love like Lutz, and Learn from Lutz," inspires change and encourages safe driving. The foundation covers all expenses, including transportation, so that schools don't have to incur any costs. Students from all 68 Cobb County elementary schools will attend one of the three events this year. Volunteers from high schools help run the events, and the kids have fun playing basketball, cornhole, and other activities. A 28-year-old man, Willie Elbert Kidd Jr., has been sentenced to 85 years in prison by a Cobb Superior Court judge for assaulting four women at a staffing agency's office in Marietta. Kidd assaulted the women, including stabbing one with a knife and severely damaging the office, in June 2022. He was found guilty by a Cobb County jury on four counts of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment, one count of possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, and one count of second-degree criminal damage to property. Kidd was also re-sentenced to 20 years for a probation violation. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.
