As the strike by District Council 33 stretches into a second week, the garbage situation in the city is only getting worse. Since residential garbage pick-up is suspended while sanitation and other city workers hit the picket lines, the city has set up dozens of dumpsters around the city. But does taking your own trash to a city dumpster make you a scab? That's an argument union supporters are making. Jace chats with Steve McGarry and Luke McGarry about the Mullets collection. Steve created the strip back in 2003 with fellow cartoonist Rick Stromoski. The comic revolved around the characters Kevin and Scab, two dim-witted friends who shared a trailer and worked at a place called Mildew's Hardware Store, which was owned by Kevin's dad. The strip lasted for a little over a year, but had a cult following. For the first time the entire strip is beign collected, Plus, Luke McGarry creates a brand new Mullets story set in the present day that gives us an idea of what Kevin and Scab are up to now. The UK Agri-Tech Centre conducted a feasibility study with Kent fruit growers, Rumwood Green, and crop protection advisers, Landseer Ltd., on the project - 'Apple Orchard Health: Evaluating Hyperspectral Imagery for Disease Detection and Biostimulant Efficacy' - with funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and UKRI Transforming Food Production Challenge. UK fruit growers are facing a major challenge, exacerbated by the diminishing availability of plant protection products (PPPs) controlling crop disease. The phasing out of traditional PPPs, driven by environmental concerns, has added complexity to this issue. Despite the utilisation of PPPs, UK apple growers experience an annual crop loss of approximately 10-12% due to apple scab, a fungal disease. Without PPPs, this figure would skyrocket to 70-80%. However, there is a promising solution on the horizon by using biostimulants. These are natural substances or micro-organisms that can enhance the natural defences and overall health of the plants when applied to them. One significant challenge of biostimulants is assessing their effectiveness as they operate distinctively from conventional PPPs. Biostimulants serve as preventative measures rather than curative, necessitating timely application before visible disease symptoms emerge. Accurately timing their use is difficult, as the critical phase of scab infection remains invisible to the naked eye. The project aim was to address the challenge of evaluating the effectiveness of biostimulants and timing their usage, by utilising advanced technologies such as hyperspectral cameras and drones. Hyperspectral sensors can capture and analyse a wide range of frequencies of light very finely, which is like being able to accurately identify and measure hundreds of colours outside of what the human eye can see. This provides a detailed and precise characterisation of objects or materials based on the unique way they reflect light, as a spectral fingerprint. By identifying these unique spectral fingerprints for crop diseases, like apple scab, and also determining which can indicate the efficacy of biostimulants, in future, we can develop an affordable camera for growers to be able to detect these fingerprints. This camera will serve as an early warning system, helping prevent disease spread, enhancing crop yield and operational efficiency, and reducing reliance on traditional PPPs. Eliot Dixon, Head of Robotics and AI at the UK Agri-Tech Centre, said, "This was a fast-paced proof of concept project designed to provide evidence for both the efficacy of biostimulant in apple scab control, but also in spectral imaging as a method for detecting apple scab. "For the UK Agri-Tech Centre, this project highlights how our spectral imaging capabilities can be used in product development for both remote sensing and plant protection products. We are very pleased to have successfully shown how lab-based spectral imaging can be successfully transferred to a commercial farm." Michael Parker, Coldstore and Compliance Manager at Rumwood Green Farm Ltd said, "This trial has been very challenging to reproduce results in the field similar to previous in-lab testing of detecting early signs of scab using specific wavelengths. "Despite the challenges, we are a step closer towards early scab detection using the hyperspectral camera. The positive results shown of the biostimulant used will hopefully encourage more growers to use biostimulants as part of their scab control, not only relying on conventional pesticide programs." Stephen Tully, Director at Landseer, said, "With disease control becoming increasingly challenging due to changes in plant protection regulations and unpredictable weather, this project aimed to validate the efficacy of biostimulants to support their routine use and investigate the feasibility of an affordable early detection system for apple scab. Canada has passed a law preventing federally-regulated businesses from using scab workers. Bill C-58 passed in June and marked a significant milestone in the progress of worker's rights. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: On Tuesday, New Hampshire held its Republican presidential primary with Donald Trump ultimately defeating Nikki Haley 54% to 43%. Meanwhile, despite not being sanctioned by the Democratic National Committee and consequently awarding no delegates, President Joe Biden defeated Rep. Dean Phillips 64% to 20%. Biden did not appear on the ballot—citing New Hampshire's prevention of South Carolina from becoming the party's first primary state—though his supporters did organize an extensive write-in campaign. According to CNN exit polling, 70% of the New Hampshire voters that cast their primary ballots for Haley in Tuesday's Republican presidential primary were not registered as Republicans—instead they were “undeclared” registrants. As the primary moves towards more conservative states, like South Carolina, will her support with independent-minded and moderate voters be enough to keep her campaign competitive? Peter Navarro, former Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, has been sentenced to 4 months in jail for defying a Congressional subpoena. Could Hunter Biden face a similar fate if he doesn't cooperate with his own Congressional subpoena? Earlier this week, in a 5 to 4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court determined that the Biden Administration has the authority to remove concertina wire erected by Texas officials along the U.S. Southern border—designed to prevent the unlawful border crossings that continue to plague the state. According to reports, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) has continued to place “razor wire” along the border—arguing that the Supreme Court may have authorized the federal government to remove the wiring, but he remains legally permitted to use the wire when he deems it necessary. On Wednesday night, United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain announced that the union would be endorsing President Joe Biden for reelection during a conference in Washington D.C. During his speech, Fain referred to presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as a “scab” explaining: “If Donald Trump ever worked in an auto plant, he wouldn't be a UAW member. He'd be a company man trying to squeeze the American worker. Donald Trump stands against everything we stand for as a union, as a society.” In a New York Times editorial, Clark D. Cunningham—a law professor at Georgia State University—explains the legal consequences for the alleged improper relationship between lead prosecutor in the Donald Trump Georgia election interference criminal case, Nathan Wade, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Cunningham writes: “Mr. Wade was very involved in both the special grand jury investigation and the current criminal case, despite an absence of obvious qualifications. Although Ms. Willis has defended her decision to hire Mr. Wade, his previous experience as a prosecutor appears to have been largely limited to misdemeanors. The amount paid to Mr. Wade so far is substantial yet Mr. Wade's billing invoices obtained by Mr. Roman's lawyer are not well documented and don't always offer, for example, itemized time worked in increments of less than one day. If Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade are dismissed by Judge McAfee, it will be up to a state agency, the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia, to appoint a prosecutor to take over from Ms. Willis. And that's where things could really go off the rails. Take one precedent: On July 25, 2022, Ms. Willis was disqualified from prosecuting Burt Jones, who was then a state senator, after she hosted a fund-raiser for Mr. Jones's eventual opponent in the race for lieutenant governor. Eighteen months later, the PACGA still hasn't appointed a special prosecutor, and Mr. Jones, now lieutenant governor, has not even been indicted. Delay is not even the worst possible outcome for the case if Ms. Willis is disqualified.
