Washington and Kiev had disagreements over strategy, tactics, and timing during the conflict. While Ukraine wanted to attack Berdyansk and Bakhmut/Artyomovsk, the US preferred a focused assault on Melitopol. The Ukrainian leadership initially requested over 1,000 armored vehicles but received 1,500, some of which were criticized as unfit for combat. The US had to secure 155mm artillery shells from South Korea and couldn't fulfill Ukraine's request for F-16 fighter jets due to cost concerns and vulnerability to Russian air defenses.

This week, we're revisiting an important episode from last year. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered a global food crisis. Ivanova explains how she and her colleagues used satellite photos, transponder data and a document trail to track a Russian company's shipment of 2,675 metric tonnes of milling wheat out of the occupied Ukrainian port of Berdyansk, across the Black Sea and over to a port in Turkey. Michael G. Welham is our guest, talking to host Iain Ballantyne about the mysterious world of undersea warriors known as ‘combat divers'. Michael has been involved with diving, both military and civilian, for some 40 years. He was a Royal Marines Commando, with skills in diving, canoeing, and parachuting. Mike was also a member of 21 Special Air Service Regiment and of 95 Commando Naval Gunfire Support Royal Artillery, both British elite Reserve units.  To start things off, Iain asks Mike to provide a definition of a combat diver. Who can be described as such? What is it that attracts a certain kind of person to what is a highly demanding and very dangerous job, even within the risk-taking world of Special Forces? The origins of combat diving - WW2's Italian and British ‘frogmen' - are discussed, including the legendary Lieutenant Commander Lionel ‘Buster' Crabb and also the exploits of the Royal Marine Boom Patrol Detachment, the famed ‘Cockleshell Heroes'. The often overlooked role of Royal Marine specialists and other Allied frogmen in enabling troops to get ashore in Normandy on D-Day 6 June are mentioned, as are the origins of the famous US Navy SEALS during WW2 and their evolution in the Vietnam War.  The activities of Russian combat divers and submersibles in Scandinavian waters during the Cold War - along with recent suspected intrusions into Swedish and Norwegian waters - are discussed, along with last year's Nord Stream gas pipeline sabotage act. Bringing things right up to date is some expert analysis by Mike of the possible role of Ukrainian combat divers in the sinking of the Russian Navy landing ship RFS Saratov, in the occupied port of Berdyansk, on the Sea of Azov.  He also provides insights into the role of Ukrainian combat divers, including their use of Swimmer Delivery Vehicles during the fight for Zmiinyi Island (Snake Island) in the northwest Black Sea. Mike reveals how, during a daring operation across the River Dnieper, they also saved the lives of hundreds of civilians by enabling their escape from Russian oppression. •‘Combat Divers' by Michael G. Welham, is published by Osprey, at £35.00 hardback. In addition to Mike's expert analysis it is packed with photos and other illustrations. *) Ukraine accuses Russia of ‘genocide' Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of "genocide" as disturbing images of mass graves in Bucha emerge. On Sunday, the bodies of at least 410 civilians were recovered in the city of Bucha near the Ukrainian capital Kiev after the withdrawal of Russian forces. The UN calls for an independent investigation. However, Russia's defence ministry, in a Twitter post, says photos and video footage from Bucha are 'another hoax' and a 'staged provocation' by Kiev for western media. *) Ukraine: Over 2,600 civilians evacuated A total of 2,694 Ukrainian civilians have been evacuated from war zones to safe areas through humanitarian corridors, the country's deputy prime minister says. Irina Vereshchuk said on Telegram that in the last 24 hours, 469 Mariupol residents traveled with their vehicles through humanitarian corridors from Mariupol and Berdyansk to Zaporizhzhia. In addition, a bus convoy carrying more than 350 people from Mariupol and Berdyansk that passed through Russian army checkpoints have reached Zaporizhia. She reported that 1,467 civilians from the towns of Lisichansk, Severodonetsk, Rubizhne and Kreminna in the Luhansk region were taken to a safe zone and 408 civilians who left Berdyansk on 10 buses reached the zone. *) Pakistan heads to polls Pakistan's President Arif Alvi has approved the dissolution of the country's National Assembly, paving the way for new general elections in the country within 90 days. The move came after the deputy speaker of the parliament blocked a no-confidence vote Sunday meant to remove Prime Minister Imran Khan from office. Opposition lawmakers have challenged the rejection of the vote in the Supreme Court, calling it a "blatant violation" of the constitution. *) Sri Lankan cabinet resigns All of Sri Lanka's cabinet ministers have resigned over the government's handling of a severe economic crisis. The prime minister and president, who are brothers, remain in office. The island is facing its worst financial turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948. There have been days of violent protests over food and medicine shortages. And, finally... *) Jon Batiste tops Grammys Olivia Rodrigo made an impressive Grammy debut, Silk Sonic claimed two major awards and Jon Batiste had the most stunning victory of the night winning the top prize at Sunday's Grammy Awards. Batiste won five Grammys Sunday, including album of the year for “We Are”, pulling off an upset in a loaded category filled with tough competition from Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and the combined talents of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. After his win, the multi-genre performer honored the artists he beat, telling the audience that “the creative arts are subjective.”

• What the Nez Perce War may presage • “It's just heartbreaking how the ambition of a few can cause such damage and destruction” (Total Recorded Time is 18:19) If you asked 10 Americans what they know about Chief Joseph or the Nez Perce War, eleven of them would draw a blank. But could there be a parallel to the current war in Ukraine and a war in the western United States nearly a century and a half ago? Attorney, author, and historian Julia Sullivan says a definite “yes.” “I've actually spent a fair amount of time in Ukraine. I taught at Berdyansk State Pedagogical Institute and Zaporizhzya National University in 2016, and I still have friends there,” Ms. Sullivan says in an email. “Berdyansk is now under Russian control and the university (along with most everything else) is closed. Zaporizhzya is the site of the nuclear power plant that Russian forces infamously fired upon.” The author of the new historical novel, “Bone Necklace,” (Brandylane; June 3, 2022), Ms. Sullivan says both wars “are David & Goliath struggles – a small but determined army facing overwhelming odds,” Julia Sullivan joins us for this Bizgnus Interview Podcast. Please click here to watch the interview: https://youtu.be/nUGMsPsNuFE “It's just heartbreaking how the ambition of a few can cause such damage and destruction,” Ms. Sullivan says. She notes additional parallels between the Nez Perce War and the current situation in Ukraine. In both wars, an unlikely leader arose: Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce and President Zelensky of Ukraine and “both wars are completely senseless.” “The Ukrainian people, like the Nez Perce, face an impossible choice: submit to autocratic rule or flee their homeland, possibly for good,” Ms. Sullivan says. “Some Ukrainians may wind up in Canada, where the Nez Perce refugees did.” She adds that most refugees never return home. But in 2020, nearly 150 years after the war, the Nez Perce returned to Joseph, Ore. “One day, I hope to celebrate the return of Ukraine,” Ms. Sullivan says.
