Welcome back to the Hidden Trails of Oregon! In the first episode of our new season, host Aaron Millar heads to the eastern edge of the state, far from the bustle of coastal cities and the craggy heights of the cascade mountains. We're going on location in the traditional lands of the Nez Perce to uncover a piece of history unknown to most outsiders. In the late 19th century, the Wallowa Band of the Nez Perce tribe were driven from their homeland. 200 warriors, protecting hundreds more women and children, fought for five days against 520 US soldiers. Their leader, before surrendering, promised his people that one day they would come home. After nearly 200 years, his promise may just be starting to come true. This is a unique story of generational resilience, cultural preservation, and the ongoing work for recognition and ancestral lands. You'll hear why he believes every challenge holds opportunity and why the process of growth, even through adversity, is what truly defines leadership.

Dr. History's Tales of the Old West

In 1519 a Spanish galleon brought ten stallions and six mares ashore, this would forever change the lives of the Native Americans. The tribes had distinct communities and customs with different languages, but they knew the universal sign language. The land was possessed in common as opposed to the European concept of land ownership. Over 350 treaties were made and broken. Thus began the saga of conflict with such famous Chiefs as Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Chief Joseph and many others. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

GRRRL Power Team Carries Forward Longo Great Dane Legacy [caption id="attachment_13331" align="alignleft" width="602"] Carol Grossman became synonymous with black Great Danes and the Longo dogs.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves is joined by Carol Grossman, Jackie Van Delft and Tristen Lawrence with a tribute to Tootie Longo, who passed away in May of this year, and the Longo Great Dane legacy. Grossman, the "Queen of Great Danes," piloted dogs for Longo for decades, including legendary greats like the second Black in Breed history to win an All Breed Best In Show, BIS BISS Ch. Longo's Chief Joseph. She shares her memory of Tootie Longo this way: “As much of an icon as she was, she never really thought of herself as an icon, whereas Joey (Vergnetti) and Peter (Green) were icons. She didn't realize they felt that way about her. That was Tootie. She just was not assertive about who she was. And she didn't realize, I think, until the end, how famous she really was, that she carried a legacy of dogs through the years. She knew she had beautiful dogs and she knew she had a great line and she knew that she was lucky in picking dogs, but she never really realized what an icon she was.” Van Delft is the more recent member of the group, a Great Dane enthusiast who had wanted a Dane since childhood. She sought out Tootie Longo to acquire a dog, and wound up as a “member of the family.” [caption id="attachment_13330" align="alignright" width="700"] Jynx with (from left to right) Tristen Lawrence, Jackie Van Delft and Tootie Longo.[/caption] “Tootie pretty much took us under her wing,” Van Delft said. “We became really good friends… I got my first Longo puppy and he was amazing. He was my heart dog. But we would go to the Longos every weekend to twice a month. We were very lucky we only lived 45 minutes away from them. So we spent a lot of time and we got to go to all the shows together. And, you know, she just became a part of the family or I became part of hers, you know, and it's just that was it. She wasn't getting rid of me.” Grossman and Van Delft were instrumental in selecting Lawrence, a third generation Great Dane exhibitor, to campaign Jynx, one of the last of Tootie's dogs, to 36 specialty wins. “I'm a Great Dane handler my whole life,” Lawrence said. “My parents and both of their parents on both sides were very active in the breed as breeders as well as handlers. So there's never been a time that I didn't do this. I remember Tootie Longo as long as I've been alive. And so growing up, knowing the power and what she built in our sport, it was incredible and for her to come to me and say ‘we want you to show our dog,' I can't describe how proud I was, how incredible that was to me.”

fWotD Episode 2623: DeLancey W. Gill Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 10 July 2024 is DeLancey W. Gill.DeLancey Walker Gill (July 1, 1859 – August 31, 1940) was an American drafter, landscape painter, and photographer. Gill first became noted for his landscape illustrations and watercolors, featuring subjects such as Native American pueblos in addition to his main focus on Washington D. C. Characterized as detailed and meticulous in his landscapes, Gill captured views of working-class and rural areas of Washington not commonly depicted in art of the period. Despite his other work, he continued to paint throughout his life, and taught art classes at the Corcoran School.Gill was employed as an illustrator and draftsman for the Treasury, followed by similar work for the United States Geological Survey. He was director of the Division of Illustration at the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) from 1889 to 1932. Following the resignation of two of the Smithsonian's photographers in 1898, Gill, while not trained in photography, took over these duties at the BAE. In this role, he produced thousands of photographs of Native American delegations for the Bureau, including notable figures such as Geronimo and Chief Joseph. Gill's photographic work was showcased in Smithsonian publications, the Panama–Pacific Exposition and on a 1923 postage stamp. His portraiture has been praised for its pictorialist qualities and strength of design. He frequently gave clothing (at times outdated or misattributed) to Native American delegates. While Gill's costuming of delegates was considered salvage ethnography in the period, it has been critiqued in modern studies for reinforcing contemporary stereotypes and misrepresenting his subjects and their cultures. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:06 UTC on Wednesday, 10 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see DeLancey W. John “Liver Eating” Johnson was the inspiration behind 1972's Jeremiah Johnson but the real man's life was even more extraordinary than portrayed on film. Johnson/Johnstone was a sailor, soldier, fur trapper, prospector, scout, Indian fighter, and lawman. Sometimes a good guy, sometimes a bad guy, and always larger than life. Dubbed "Liver-Eating" due to a chilling tale of vengeance, he allegedly killed Crow warriors and consumed their livers, but are these stories true? Later in his life, Johnston assumed the role of constable in Coulson, Montana, and served as a town marshal in Red Lodge. However, his journey came to an end in 1900 when he passed away in a veteran's hospital in Los Angeles. Decades later his remains would be relocated to Cody, Wyoming, where they now rest alongside other legendary figures of the Old West.  Top of Form Top of FormCheck out the website for more true tales from the Old West https://www.wildwestextra.com/   Email me! https://www.wildwestextra.com/contact/   Buy me a coffee! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/wildwest   Free Newsletter! https://wildwestjosh.substack.com/   Join Patreon for ad-free and bonus content! https://www.patreon.com/wildwestextra   Merchandise! https://www.teepublic.com/user/wild-west-extravaganza   Book Recommendations! https://www.amazon.com/shop/wildwestextravaganza/list/YEHGNY7KFAU7?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d   The Never Ending Lives of Liver-Eating Johnson by D.J. George Montgomery Harris died of wounds received in the Lava Beds of northern California while battling Captain Jack and the Modoc tribe in 1873.  Benjamin Hubert Hodgson was killed during the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn in Montana against Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors – fellow Laurel Hill tour guide Tom Keels tells his story.  Jonathan Williams Biddle, whose father Henry Biddle had been killed in the Civil War, lost his life in the Battle of Bear Paw, also in Montana, in 1877 against Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce.  James Hansell French was killed in the San Mateo Mountains of New Mexico territory in 1880 as his Buffalo Soldier troops pursued the great Apache chief Victorio and his warriors.    Note: I acknowledge that many indigenous peoples reject the name "Indian", but most of what I tell you in this podcast occurred at least 140 years ago when the term was used universally and even respectfully.  All four of these men have the word "Indian" carved on their gravestones.  The podcast title "Killed by Indians" is in quotation marks for this reason.

Ellen Mueller is an artist based in Minneapolis. She recommends “Im/perfect Slumbers,” on view in the window galleries and skyway entrance of the Minnesota Museum of American Art through August 20. “You can be walking down the street, and you will get the privilege of passing by several very cool artworks,” Mueller says. She especially likes the work of Peng Wu, “who has some really great vinyl installations.” Mueller also recommends Rachel Breen's recycled textiles and fiber creations and Katya Oicherman's work. According to Mueller, the theme of the show is sleep, and especially disrupted sleep, “which everybody can connect to.” Jenny Fogarty lives in Le Center, Minn. and attended an exhibition of photographs by Edward S. Curtis, who was raised partially in Le Sueur County and whose work often focused on Native American subjects. “I went to go see the exhibit, not really expecting much. And I walked in and I was floored,” Fogarty explains. She was especially struck by an early 20th century photograph of Nez Percé tribal leader Chief Joseph. “I did a drawing (of him) when I was in college,” she says. According to Fogarty, Curtis's images offer rich details from their subject's life, including “the arts, from the boats to the baskets … it's just a very awesome exhibit.” The exhibit will be on display through the rest of the year at 48 N Park Ave in Le Center, Minn. Full Circle Theater is doing a production called “Antigonick,” which is based on Sophocles' (spelled Sophokles in this production) “Antigone.” Twin Cities theatermaker, improviser and writer Shanan Custer says she is excited that the translation is “new and fresh.”  Custer is also a fan of Meskwaki actor Oogie_Push, who stars in the title role of Antigone. “I'm just excited for what looks like a lot of movement and a lot of really beautiful storytelling,” Custer says. The play runs through June 4 at the Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis.

He was invited to the city to talk about his storied past, but the Nez Perce chief had his eye on the future of his people. When Chief Joseph arrived in Seattle in 1903, he had a message to deliver and a public interested in hearing it. He had become a kind of celebrity, though the nature of his renown was complicated. A leader of the Wallowa band of the Nez Perce Tribe, Joseph had joined his people as they were pushed out of their ancestral home in northeast Oregon by the U.S. Army. And he had put up a storied fight against those forces as they attempted to, and eventually did, stop the tribe's retreat to Canada. Crosscut's resident historian Knute Berger told the tale of Joseph's visit to Seattle in a recent episode of his Mossback's Northwest video series, but there is more to the story. For this episode of the Mossback podcast, Berger and co-host Sara Bernard discuss the history of harassment, attempted erasure and resistance that defined Joseph's life, as well as the forces that brought him to Seattle and how the message he came to deliver still resonates today. Before listening, we suggest you watch the Mossback's Northwest episode about Chief Joseph here. --- Credits Hosts: Sara Bernard, Knute Berger Producer: Jonah Cohen Executive producer: Mark Baumgarten

In 1908 a Montana rancher befriended a Nez Perce Indian and his wife and son who had traveled to the area to pick the hops, and soon the rancher asked if he could get the Indian's story. The whites called him "Yellow Wolf", and he rode with Chief Joseph's band during the Nez Perse (pronounced Nez Purse) Wars.. Every year for more than twenty years the man showed up to work on crops until in 1935 he died. And every year he would spend two or three days with the rancher narrating his story, which has been authenticated.. Its one of the best stories I have ever come across. Hope you enjoy it. Bone Necklace was inspired by the Nez Perce War of 1877, which was described in a contemporaneous newspaper account as “a gigantic blunder and a crime.” The U.S. Army field commander, General Oliver “Uh Oh” Howard, had promised to make “short work” of the Nez Perce. Instead, for four months, he pursued them across 1,100 miles of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, only to be humiliated in the end. The Weekly Kansas Chief called the Nez Perce leader, Chief Joseph, the “Red Napoleon,” and the name stuck. Nobody was more surprised by Chief Joseph's military genius than he was. His own people had never viewed him as a war chief. He would have done anything to avoid the war that made him famous. The final engagement of the war took place in the Bears Paw Mountains in October 1877. The Nez Perce horse herd was captured, making it impossible for the embattled tribe to move children, elders, and sick or injured family members the final thirty miles to the Canadian border and safety. Chief Joseph finally surrendered, famously saying, “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”

This is a tale of two survivors. One, affectionately known as Comanche, was an 8-year veteran of the U.S. military. He was first wounded in battle against hostiles on the southern plains in 1868. And, when Custer led the charge at the Battle of Little Big Horn, our veteran was right there with him. Wounded an astonishing seven times, he somehow survived and spent the next year recuperating. And, as you can imagine, he was showered in respect for the rest of his life and, upon his death, was sent off with full military honors.   The other survivor was Dewey Beard, also known as Iron Hail. A teenager during the Battle of the Greasy Grass. He fled to Canada with Sitting Bull but eventually returned to the U.S. and settled upon a reservation. Unfortunately, the Army came calling again. Once again it was the 7th Cavalry and once again, it was a massacre. This time on a little creek called Wounded Knee.   Email me! https://www.wildwestextra.com/contact/   Check out my website! https://www.wildwestextra.com/   Buy me a coffee! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/wildwest   The Song of Dewey Beardy by Philip Burnham https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MVDSZOC?asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.YEHGNY7KFAU7   Comanche the Horse - https://biodiversity.ku.edu/exhibits/comanche   Dewey Beard | Indian Country Today - https://indiancountrytoday.com/archive/from-little-big-horn-to-wounded-knee-the-true-legend-of-dewey-beard   Book & Gear Recommendations - https://www.amazon.com/shop/wildwestextravaganza/list/YEHGNY7KFAU7   The Brothers McCarty - https://www.wildwestextra.com/the-brothers-mccarty/   Chief Joseph & the Nez Perce War - https://www.wildwestextra.com/joseph/   Can You Don't - https://open.spotify.com/show/2H5vQIYhxLo3fWoDowAYf3

Chief Joseph finally surrendered, famously saying, “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”  By then, the military skill of the Nez Perce and their generosity toward wounded soldiers and non-combatants had caused public opinion to shift strongly in their favor. At the start of the war, a newspaper in Portland, Oregon suggested that “extermination” of the tribe was “the only safe and permanent” solution for Indian “treachery.” Shortly after the final battle, the ladies auxiliary in Bismarck, Dakota Territory, invited Chief Joseph to a luncheon honoring the tribe's bravery and humanity. In subsequent years, Chief Joseph used his fame to advocate for better conditions for his people. He was granted interviews with President Hayes in 1879, President McKinley in 1897, and President Roosevelt in 1903. His likeness was engraved on the great bronze doors of the Library of Congress in 1897. He delivered a lecture at Lincoln Hall and published an article in the North American Review in which he spoke of equal protection in a way that would not be accepted into American law for nearly a century.  Chief White Bird was the only other chief who survived the war. His fame never matched Chief Joseph's, but his heroism certainly did.  Towards the end of the final battle, while Chief Joseph was preparing to surrender, Chief White Bird led 290 able-bodied survivors through the U.S. Army's siege line and into Canada, where they were finally safe. The Canadian government granted the Nez Perce political asylum, and the famous Lakota Chief Sitting Bull, who had also been given political asylum there, welcomed the new refugees into his camp. Chief Joseph could have escaped with Chief White Bird – he was still strong – but instead he stayed with the Nez Perce who could not travel the final distance on foot, and would need him in the difficult years to come. Chief Joseph's daughter (Sound of Running Feet) and her mother (Springtime) went to Canada without him. Few accounts of the war, then or now, acknowledge that more than 40% of the tribe escaped from the Bears Paw Battlefield. Even today, there is a small Nez Perce diaspora in Canada, where they have lived in peace since 1877. Bone Necklace is for them – the ones who never gave up. Who brought knives to a gunfight. Who in some cases had nothing but clubs made of wood and stone. Everyone had written them off. And yet they came through with their freedom still intact.

After the Civil War ended, Gen. Oliver Otis Howard was put in charge of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, the first social welfare organization in this country. But after the efforts of Reconstruction collapsed, Howard got as far away from the politics of Washington, D.C. as he could — he came to Portland. And it was in Oregon that he met Chief Joseph and led a four-month military campaign against the Nez Perce Tribe. Historian Daniel Sharfstein's latest book, “Thunder in the Mountains: Chief Joseph, Oliver Otis Howard and the Nez Perce War,” tells that story. We spoke to Sharfstein in 2017.
