In this episode, we travel to the Italian coast and port-town of Gioia Tauro, in the Southern region of Calabria. We discover the history of the construction of the port of Gioia Tauro and the role of the Italian mafia, Ndrangheta, in the narco-trafficking of cocaine into Europe. Sea of Rage is a reportage podcast dealing with the borderless narco-trafficking business as seen from the perspective of ordinary people who live in two towns in Southern Europe: Barbate (Andalusìa, Spain) and Gioia Tauro (Calabria, Italy). Over the past few decades, Barbate and Gioia Tauro have become entry points for hashish and cocaine into Europe. But why have these towns become such pivotal places for drug trafficking? And what does it mean to live, day in day out, next door to such dark and murky businesses?Sea of Rage is an adaptation of the homonymous co-production between Podium Podcast and Chora Media, released in September 2024 under the Spanish and Italian language titles Mar de rabia (Spanish, Podium Podcast) and Mare di rabbia (Italian, Chora Media). Today the ‘Ndrangheta, Calabria's clan-based Mafia, is one of the world's richest and most powerful drug trafficking organizations, worth an estimated $55 billion. But it wasn't always like that. From the 1960s, as European politics went mad, the group glommed onto a new fad taking Italy by storm: kidnapping. And it got them the capital to get into property, cigarette smuggling, and cocaine. But they were far from gentleman thieves. The ‘Ndrangheta's kidnapping streak cost lives, outraged the Italian public, and kicked off a feud between rival clans than continues spilling blood to this day. Learn more about your ad choices.

This has made it difficult for authorities to infiltrate and dismantle the organization.Despite the efforts of law enforcement agencies, 'Ndrangheta continues to operate and expand its criminal activities, both within Italy and internationally. Its vast wealth and influence have allowed it to infiltrate legitimate businesses and political institutions, making it a formidable and persistent threat to the rule of law in many parts of the world. The CJNG (Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación) is a powerful and violent criminal organization based in Jalisco, Mexico. The cartel was formed in 2010 as an offshoot of the Sinaloa cartel and has since become one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in Mexico. The CJNG is involved in a wide range of criminal activities, including drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and murder. The cartel has expanded its operations across Mexico and into other countries, such as the United States, where it has established distribution networks for drugs such as methamphetamine and fentanyl. The CJNG is known for its extreme violence, including beheadings, dismemberments, and public executions. The cartel has also been responsible for attacks on Mexican security forces, including the downing of a military helicopter in 2015.Despite the efforts of law enforcement agencies, the CJNG continues to operate and expand its criminal activities, both within Mexico and internationally. Its vast wealth and influence have allowed it to infiltrate legitimate businesses and political institutions, making it a persistent threat to the rule of law and stability in many parts of the world. Now, both of these groups have come together to form a partnership to bring drugs from Mexico and south America to Italy and in this episode we are going to explore that partnership and take a look at what it means for the narco trade in general.(commercial at 7:05)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Jalisco, new "friendly cartel" of the 'Ndrangheta - Proceso

Kate Adie introduces stories from Sudan, Calabria in southern Italy, Japan, the Californian city of Oakland and Tbilisi in Georgia. The war in Sudan between its army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has torn the country apart for more than 500 days. Civilians are bearing the brunt of the suffering as aid agencies have had their access blocked in many areas. Leila Molana Allen has seen how Sudanese volunteers are bringing food and medicine to communities now full of hungry, displaced and often traumatised people. The countryside of Calabria, in southern Italy, may look like a rural idyll. But much of its fertile agricultural land has been infiltrated by the local mafia network known as the Ndrangheta. Francisco Garcia met and talked to farmers trying to resist the organised crime groups which want to muscle in.There's a record number of abandoned homes or 'akiyas' in Japan. Over 9 million houses are standing empty, as the population ages and shrinks, and younger people move to the cities. Particularly in rural areas, many heirs aren't prepared to take on the costs of emptying, demolishing or rebuilding old family homes. Shaimaa Khalil stepped into a couple of period properties now being restored by their new owners. The city of Oakland, in northern California, once had a reputation for its political militancy and cultural inventiveness. These days it's known for bitter disputes over gentrification, homelessness, and public fear of crime. Lindsay Johns recently visited the city across the bay from San Francisco with of one of its most famous sons, author Ishmael Reed. And in the shadow of the Caucasus Mountains, Beth Timmins attends not one, but three Georgian weddings - occasions full of heritage, music, poetry and toasts of thick red wine. For over thirty years, modern Italy was plagued by ransom kidnappings perpetrated by bandits and organised crime syndicates. Nearly 700 men, women, and children were abducted from across the country between the late 1960s and the late 1990s, held hostage by members of the Sardinian banditry, Cosa Nostra, and the 'Ndrangheta. Subjected to harsh captivities and psychological abuse, the victims spent months and even years in isolation while law enforcement and the state struggled to find them. Ransom Kidnapping in Italy: Crime, Memory, and Violence (University of Toronto Press, 2024) by Dr. Alessandra Montalbano examines this Italian criminal phenomenon. Alessandra Montalbano argues that abduction is a key vantage point from which to understand modern Italy: it troubled the law, terrified society, ignited juridical and parliamentary debates, and mobilised citizens. Bringing together archival and media materials with the victims' accounts and diverse forms of cultural response, the book examines ransom kidnapping through the lenses of historiography, law, literary criticism, trauma studies, phenomenology, and political philosophy. Ransom Kidnapping in Italy traces how and at what price Italians became aware of living in a country that was being blackmailed by criminal organisations that arguably jeopardised the nation even more than terrorism. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. On this episode of The Real Life in Italy, we're getting into a topic I think is so important to understand: The Mafia in Italy or rather, Italian Organized Crime. This is a little 101 for you to understand how these organizations operate, where they operate, and who they are. Oh, and how that might effect life for us foreigners living in Italy. Spoiler: You'll probably never even notice it, but it's all around. Expats in Italy seem to have so many misconceptions of the mafia in italy on two extremes: one, that it is dangerous and you should avoid certain areas of Italy at all costs, two that it doesn't exist. Both are wrong to a certain degree, and that's exactly what we'll be covering in this episode. I'll share where you can find the Italian mafia operating well beyond Italy's borders, and give you a quick overview of the main organizations: Cosa Nostra, Camorra, 'Ndrangheta, and the Sacra Corona Unita. While we don't have to be scared while living in Italy, understanding how the mafia exists and operates can help us make better decisions as expats in Italy - and really as general people all over the world.  Here are some great resources about the mafia in Italy if you would like to learn more: Books- Midnight in Sicily-Peter Robb Gomorrah- Roberto Saviano The Day of the Owl- Leonardo Sciascia Global Mafia by Antonio Nicaso and Lee Lamothe Excellent Cadavers by Alexander Stille Mafia and Antimafia by Umberto Santino Movies or Shows: La Ribelle Siciliana Shooting the Mafia Robinò Excellent Cadavers 1992/1993 100 Passi News Sites to stay up to date about the Mafia in Italy, and in the world: The Guardian- covers news very well if you search through their site.
