Bert Trautmann nasceu no dia 23 de outubro de 1923 em Bremen, no Noroeste da Alemanha. A partir de 1933, quando ele tinha dez anos, Hitler toma o poder no país e ele fez o que a maioria dos jovens faziam: ingressou na Jungvolk (organização doutrinadora de jovens precursora à infame Juventude Hitlerista). Em 1941, aos 17 anos, ele entrou na Luftwaffe - a força aérea nazista - e se tornou paraquedista.   Acontece que em um certo momento ele foi capturado pelos ingleses, que o levaram para um campo de prisioneiros.   Na prisão ele fez o que a maioria dos prisioneiros faziam: jogou futebol. E seu desempenho no esporte foi tão bom que chamou atenção de times fora da prisão.   Quando a guerra acabou, Trautmann foi convidado pra jogar em alguns times. Com essa proposta ele aceitou ser repatriado e se recusou a voltar à Alemanha.   Com o tempo ele cresceu no esporte de tal maneira que o Manchester City o convidou para ser goleiro. No momento do convite a torcida protestou. In 1956, the Manchester City goalkeeper, Bert Trautmann, became an FA Cup hero by breaking his neck at Wembley but playing on to the end of the final. Trautmann was a former Nazi paratrooper who adopted England as his home country after being taken prisoner during World War Two. Bert finished the 1956 FA Cup with a broken neck. We as a culture love and admire these great athletes because they are willing to do anything to win. No matter what the cost, no matter how much pain….they play through the pain. They know how to play…hurt.
