Most mothers agree that prayer is part of their parenting dynamic, yet so many mothers, including myself, wonder if the way of prayer is as mysterious and challenging as it can seem. We often wonder if we're covering all the topics needed with this little one, and we wish we knew what to pray in the struggles in hard parenting seasons. Bethany Kimsey walked through these questions and doubts in a season with her eight children in which she desperately needed to see God at work in her children's lives. Seeking His Word for what praying intentionally looked like began to create ~ A Warrior Mama's Prayers. The journal walks a mother through a full year of praying specific scriptures for her child every day, month after month. These prayers are divided into 4 main themes of prayer: • Praying the Gospel take root in our child's life • Praying for their Character • Praying for the spiritual battle around them • Praying for their future as they learn to abide in Jesus Join us as we learn to anchor our prayers in very specific promises and truths from His Word, you and I will have front row seats to watch God work in the hearts of our children. He invites us to partner with Him – what a privilege! Connect with Bethany: Bethany Kimsey (mykajabi.com)
Keeping Christ at the center of Christmas is a huge challenge. Busy parents are constantly pushed and pulled a hundred different directions, especially at the holidays. Our event calendar in December can look like a flow-chart from an international airport with constant departures and arrivals. It is easy to forget Christ in the hustle and bustle of baking, shopping, wrapping, and party-hopping. How do we keep our families focused on Christ during the hectic holiday season? Bethany Kimsey, host of the Warrior Mama Podcast, joins Catherine again to discuss how to keep our hearts and our families concentrated on Christ during the Christmas season. These two moms have over 40 years of parenting experience, and in this episode, they share their favorite Christ-centered family traditions. These traditions are: *Don't compare yourself to other families. *Study the names of Jesus. *Celebrate Advent. *Watch Christ-centered entertainment. *Create a Jesse Tree. *Assign Scripture passages to each family member for Christmas. *Educate your kids and give to a Christ-centered mission. *Celebrate Jolaboklaflod (an evening of book-giving) with Christ-centered books. Employing some of these wonderful family traditions will help counteract the busyness, the commercialism and materialism, and the overall stress of Christmas. “He sees you when you're sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows when you've been bad or good So be good for goodness sake.” Our culture tells us that Jolly ole St. Nicholas is keeping a list, and he's checking it twice. He's gonna find out who's naughty or nice. So the gifts under our tree at Christmas are a direct result of how good or bad we've been throughout the year. Is that how our faith works? Did God give the great gift of Christ to the world because we were good? Because we deserved Him? No. The Christian faith tells us that a very good God sent the gift of his Son to a broken humanity, to a hopeless people who have fallen short of His glory. We don't deserve the gift of Jesus, but God gave this gift because of His overwhelming love for us. Likewise, the gifts under our tree for our kids must not be attached to their behavior. Unlike Santa Clause, our gifts must not have strings attached. They should be a result our love, not a manipulative ploy to garner a good performance from our kids. Joining Catherine as a co-host for this vital conversation about what our culture gets wrong about Christmas is Bethany Kimsey, a mother of 8 and host of The Warrior Mama Podcast, a show that is devoted to applying the Gospel to the daily details of parenting our children. Together, Bethany and Catherine tackle one of the greatest cultural lies about Christmas—the lie that your Christmas gifts are attached to your goodness. You may feel exhausted, you don't remember the last time you had a quiet time, you feel like you can barely wake up in the morning, you don't have the bandwidth to do one more thing. Maybe it's sleepless nights? Babies? Toddlers all around? This season can feel mundane…I remember them well. This question asked by one of you beauties is so precious. I believe Jesus smiles and longs for you to know He is there. Just because you haven't opened your bible in a year doesn't mean He has left you. He is there. One thing is for certain: Filling your cup looks different this season. “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Welcome to the kitchen table with Bethany Kimsey! Have you ever walked away from an interaction with one of your children and thought, “I have NO IDEA what to do?” Motherhood can leave us floundering in our thoughts. Sometimes we don't know what to do with the situation that has presented itself. It leaves us feeling befuddled. Bethany Kimsey encourages us that we can find refuge and an invitation in Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. We can call to Him even in the day to day, in the potty training, in the sleepless baby, in the mood swings of our teenagers, and God will answer. Mama, He understands these great and hidden things. He has given us a great task, and at times it can feel so daunting but I share how to step into the throne room and trust God's invitation. Have you ever had to wrestle with God? Maybe you are walking through a difficult circumstance and you are asking God the tough questions: Why God? Why is this happening to me? I am so excited for you to hear Bethany Kimsey’s special mom story. She had to wrestle with God in her late teens when she got a doctor’s diagnosis that she was not going to be able to have kids. I love what Bethany shares on the podcast about what God taught her in the middle of that wrestling. Honestly, it is one of my favorite parts of this episode. Now, I don’t want to give anything away but I just love that nothing is impossible with God, even if the doctors tell you otherwise. I promise you do not want to miss this miraculous story! Bethany also offers amazing wisdom for moms. One of my favorite quotes she recently shared on Instagram is “We cannot parent perfectly. As a mother to 8 children, Bethany Kimsey has seen God radically change her messy motherhood from weary, anxious, and frantic to peaceful, joyful, and triumphant. She helps weary mothers win the battle against worry and fatigue as they understand their identity in Christ and rest in the hope of the Gospel in community with other moms. As a writer, speaker, and encourager of mothers, she wants to see a generation of Grace-Filled Warriors stand together and walk triumphantly behind the One who sets them free from performance, doubt, and fear. Bethany has learned the freedom of applying gospel truths to the daily details with children. Over on her podcast, "When God Breaks Through," we learn together how to take spiritual truths into the micro and macro moments of motherhood. How do we make this fuzzy intersection of real life mothering and the gospel clearly defined for vision and confidence? Connection happens when we meet together in the real spaces-- the kitchen tables of life-- sharing stories of hope, truth, and grace. She would love to connect to encourage you! On this week's Thanksgiving episode of When God Breaks Through, Bethany shares a listener's question. “How do I successfully help my children navigate the world's culture of entitlement and how do you teach gratitude and speak into this area with Gospel conversations?” Bethany has discovered three different areas where we can find the opposite of gratitude in our children's lives. -Possessiveness -Selfishness -Entitlement In parenting, we can identify each of these at certain times of growth in our children's lives. Each one steers Bethany in the right direction of how to speak into each of her eight children. Addressing these three sinful nature highlight reels, Bethany reminds us that these are opportunities to bring the Gospel conversation to the attention of our children. Through various age ranges, she explains how we can begin to see and notice and gracefully guide our children to experience freedom from selfishness, entitlement, and possessiveness. Culturally, we see a child-centered approach which suggests that our child's happiness is number one. When we center our family on the happiness of our children, we feed into the sinful nature which says, “I am owed happiness, contentment, and comfort.” Those things are not true in the Gospel. Before we have these redemptive Gospel conversations with our children, we have to look inward and evaluate where we are discontent or are feeling entitled. Bethany discusses the practical ways we can observe, confront without shame, and create opportunities to share the Good News from each childhood stage. Do you have a question for Bethany? Welcome back to the kitchen table with Bethany Kimsey for this week's episode of When God Breaks Through. This week Bethany answers another fellow mama's question sent in via Instagram and Facebook. Don't forget you can send in your questions, as well. Just visit Bethany's instagram and facebook page @bethanykimsey to send a message with your question. Kimberly asked, “How do you have a good friendship with your children while at the same time carry the authoritative role? How do you balance the two?” To answer this question, we have to answer some other pertinent questions: How do we tend to the heart that was given to me? How am I holding my child's heart? Am I holding it too tight? Or have I dropped their heart? Characteristics of disconnect to their heart include: distance avoidance eye rolls It is up to us to come before our children. In our homes, we have a chief opportunity to display reconciliation and the Gospel in moments like these. We are called to be ministers of reconciliation. When we recognize we have a problem with a child and their hearts are not softly placed in our hands, our role as the more mature believer is to come to that child and humbly sit before them and say honestly, “I think there is a problem in our relationship. How have I wounded your heart? What has caused this riff between us?” They may respond with “I'm fine.” Maybe they aren't ready to discuss yet. They may need space to process, but we need to be willing to wait and ready to discuss when they are ready. As mamas we want to get to the root of the problem, into the crevices of their hearts. Bethany discusses in this episode the way we participate in holding our child's heart through key conversations and communications, through prayer, and through constant humility. This, in turn, brings friendship naturally because our children are assured their hearts are being tended too. Listen to be encouraged and led into a beautiful mentoring conversation in our motherhood. Do you know another Mom who needs some encouragement? Share the podcast!
