I sat down with Jaunique Sealey to chat about her new book called "Black Girls Must Die Exhausted", being a modern woman and how the book came to be! The Harvard Law grad is a popular speaker, thought leader, seasoned business executive, and noted author who writes fiction under her chosen nom de plume, Jayne Allen. The Detroit native and L.A.-based writer began her career as an attorney in the music industry as an executive at Universal Music Group. She later served as a senior digital strategist and business development executive for Lady Gaga and as an attorney and strategist for Prince, whom she credits for teaching her how to truly be an artist. She has also dabbled in standup comedy, is trained in improv, and is a fun and engaging conversationalist offering quick-witted humor and notable insights. In the forthcoming publication, Black Girls Must Die Exhausted, Ms. Sealey shares relatable, real-life experiences of the lead character Tabitha Walker, a young professional who knows what she wants with a plan in place to have it all. That is until life gets in the way with an unexpected fertility diagnosis. BGMDE centers around the narrative and perspective of a black female protagonist navigating contemporary fertility issues, family, race, relationships, and inequality, to ultimately discover what matters most wasn't what she originally thought. This book is about receiving a wake-up call and opportunity to define life on your terms rather than accepting how the world imposes its own definitions. With this story, Jaunique implores readers to "find your word" in life. Tabitha's word is exhausted. Although Jayne Allen has been writing all of her life, it wasn't until 2016 when she adopted a pseudonym that she finally felt comfortable publishing her fiction. After her self-published debut, Black Girls Must Die Exhausted, sold nearly 20,000 copies, the publishing world took note. Now, Jaunique Sealey — the woman behind Jayne Allen — serves as Vice President of Strategy & Community for Zibby Books and her novel is Target's October Book Club pick. Jaunique and Zibby talk about the importance of creating honestly complex characters, why they both like drafting individual scenes and stitching them together to form their larger narratives, and how Jaunique found time to write such a beautiful and necessary story. This month we read Black Girls Must Die Exhausted by Jayne Allen. Jayne introduced us to Tabitha Walker who was met with the hardest news of her life and we read the events that displayed Tabitha balancing it all. We discussed our favorite hairstyles and our most embarrassing hair moments, although we were setting trends. Tabitha and her family/friend’s experiences had us discussing how our lives and experiences related. We discussed relationships, friendships, family, and work events that resurfaced while reading BGMDE. Filled with laughs, cries, and everything in between Tabitha Walker has marked a place in our hearts. BGMDE was a fun, relatable read that shed light on the complications of being a black woman in today’s demanding society. We were able to see how all of the female characters handled the demands in their own life and what consequences they faced. BGMDE is a must-read. This month we featured Amber Janae’s The Intentional Living Workbook. This workbook was created to support living your life more intentionally. The workbook can be found at https://www.amberjanae.com/shop.
During May we read Sula by Toni Morrison. A dark tale of two friends who become strangers. We open up the discussion talking about our country’s current state and how much hasn't changed about the care of our black service members. We discuss our family migrating and moving to different states to create better lives for those to come and then we get into the drama. We meet Sula and Nell, which made us reminisce about the freedoms we had in our childhood, being a “ride or die”, and in what situations we would get our parents involved. We share our thoughts on the relationship dynamics between the parents and the children in this story. Then we get to the point that broke us all into pieces, the ultimate betrayal that tore Sula and Nell apart and caused their lives to dissolve. Toni had us captivated by her words, reading and rereading parts, dissecting, and analyzing to understand. This book took us through it, but we enjoyed the journey. Toni Morrison has always been captivating with her words, forcing us to look inward and look deeper than the black ink on paper. We thoroughly enjoyed this read. Join us next month, as we read Black Girls Must Die Exhausted by Jayne Allen. Special shoutout to our sponsor Black and Bookish.
