Sarah's choices are evenly split between debut authors, new to her authors, and repeat authors. Food novels, rom-coms, thrillers (two with a mistaken identity element), and lighter reading are the picks for spring! Sarah has already read one of her picks — and one of Catherine's! And, Catherine has already started reading one of hers. Plus, their #1 picks for the spring. Summary: Welcome to the final stop on our Summer Road Trip Series, friends! Today, Holly and Devin sip some tea while sheltering from the Seattle rain in Washington State. With cozy vibes that can quickly turn sinister, this state is ripe with potential for stories in either wheelhouse for our hosts. Culturally and literally this state is rooted in nature and the natural world, which can highlight the most epic loves or the darkest, chilling terrors. We're so delighted you joined us for our road trip and are excited to dive into Spooky Season with you next! Topics Discussed: The Heart (4:08): Devin discussed Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur, a sapphic romance following Darcy Lowell and Elle Jones after a disastrous first date turns into a fake-dating relationship of convenience. Both trying to escape pressures from family, the no-nonsense actuary Darcy and the earnest astrologer Elle agree to play the part of lovers through the holiday season, but fate (and the stars?) have a different plan for them. Devin's key takeaways are: This novel takes place in Seattle and everything about it from the location descriptions to the characters themselves speak to that quirky, offbeat but sincere culture. Things are a bit slower, the rain creates a vibe, and everyone is more in-tune with their feelings in this neck of the woods. Astrology is a major player in the entire trilogy by Bellefleur. The book has fun astrological tidbits woven throughout (what song are you based on your astrological sign, etc.) and is a huge part of Elle's career, life etc. and how Darcy ends up authentically connecting with her. This story was one of Devin's favorite “opposites attract” and “fake dating” trope stories she's run into for the last several years. Elle and Darcy are both so authentic, their issues so valid and their situation so feasible feeling that it's impossible not to buy in. The Dagger (16:27): Holly discussed The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean, a crime fiction story centered around Ellie Black - a 19 year-old who stumbles out of the Washington State woods and back into the world from which she disappeared when she was kidnapped two years prior. Detective Casey Calhoun works with Ellie and is determined to get to the bottom of what happened to her, but has a hard time getting straight answers. With personal investment in uncovering the truth, Calhoun must discern if it's trauma or if Ellie is hiding something. Holly's key takeaways were: The concept and tropes in this book aren't groundbreaking–disappearing girls, seasoned detective determined to solve it–but somehow Jean made the story feel fresh with fantastic execution. Jean deeply established the characters themselves, which balanced well with the story that unravels in alternating POVs and timelines. Jean examines themes like misogyny and misplaced affection; Ellie's perspective is told as though she's speaking to someone, although we're not sure who, if it's the detective or someone else. It goes back and walks the reader through what she experienced while kidnapped, which is pretty chilling. There was a decent sense of place as being in the Pacific Northwest, especially when experiencing the vastness of the woods that Ellie is held within and from which she emerges. Detective Chelsey Calhoun's life is turned upside down when she gets the call Ellie Black, a girl who disappeared years earlier, has resurfaced in the woods of Washington state—but Ellie's reappearance leaves Chelsey with more questions than answers. It's been twenty years since Detective Chelsey Calhoun's sister vanished when they were teenagers, and ever since she's been searching: for signs, for closure, for other missing girls. But happy endings are rare in Chelsey's line of work. Then a glimmer: local teenager Ellie Black, who disappeared without a trace two years earlier, has been found alive in the woods of Washington State. But something is not right with Ellie. She won't say where she's been, or who she's protecting, and it's up to Chelsey to find the answers. She needs to get to the bottom of what happened to Ellie: for herself, and for the memory of her sister, but mostly for the next girl who could be taken—and who, unlike Ellie, might never return. The debut thriller from New York Times bestselling author Emiko Jean, The Return of Ellie Black is both a feminist tour de force about the embers of hope that burn in the aftermath of tragedy and a twisty page-turner that will shock and surprise you right up until the final page.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. It's summer for real now, and we're hyped for our upcoming event at Hastings House in Beverly Farms, featuring four summer-read authors. This is a legit literary genre at this point, folks. So we fire things up with Elin Hilderbrand's final (maybe) summer novel, fittingly titled "Swan Song." What makes this new literary tradition so attractive? Sam and Hannah both have thoughts, comparing her to Edith Wharton and Jane Austen. She's incredibly efficient in setting a scene and establishing character, and even created a collective first person that's incredibly effective. It leads to a discussion on voice, especially in "Fire Exit," Morgan Talty's new gritty and real novel about identity and family. It's a special novel, for sure, and you should expect it to be on all the awards lists at the end of the year. How intimately linked are our identities to our DNA? "Becoming Little Shell" has some non-fiction thoughts on this as well. We go on and on about this, kinda. It's really good. Hannah is less enthused by "The Return of Ellie Black," by Emiko Jean, which she listened to and felt a little bit like masochism. But she did get hooked and wanted to figure out what happpens. It's a lot different from her "Tokyo Ever After," a very sweet YA book. Definitely not sweet is "The Book of Elsewhere," a book co-written by none other than Keanu Reeves and China Mieville, which is really violent, but also super interesting and thoughtful. After powering through the beginning, Sam kinda loved it. Finally, Hannah has just finished "A Good Life," a bestseller from France now in translation about two sisters in the French countryside who teamed up to survive their mom.

When Mackenzie got to his home, he tied her up and strangled her. Ayoola then attempted to burn Mackenzie's remains and belongings in his backyard, in full view of his AirBnB renter and neighbors. Liliya (Lily) Guyvoronsky (20) had been dating Bothell City Council member James McNeal (58) for months. James recently left his wife and three children to be with her. Lily detailed their relationship in her diary and in messages to her friends. 'He is really controlling and I can tell he thinks I'm stupid because I am young,' she wrote. In April 2024, the two got into an argument and James allegedly killed Lily. James called his attorney to the scene who called 911 to report the murder. In this episode, I chat with Emiko Jean, the New York Times bestselling author whose journey from various professions to the realm of writing is nothing short of inspiring. Emiko sheds light on her latest page-turner, The Return of Ellie Black, and the meticulous care she gives to her Japanese American characters. The world of publishing is fraught with uncertainties, but Emiko's candidness about her path, which took her from feeling disconnected to books she saw in libraries and bookshops due to her heritage, to celebrating representation in her work. The thread of survival and resilience weaves through our discussion, as Emiko draws upon true crime inspirations to craft narratives that echo the human spirit's enduring nature. She opens up about her five-year commitment to storytelling, infusing her characters with psychological depth, and confronting the repercussions of trauma. The novel's gripping conclusion—a twist devised to keep readers guessing—is a testament to her ability to create suspense that lingers beyond the final page. Finally, Emiko reflects on the arduous road to publication—the rejections, the revision under the guidance of an editorial agent, and the triumph of securing a two-book deal. Her approach to reading, favoring nonfiction during the writing process, and the unexpected delight in branching into new literary territories, underscores the ever-evolving nature of a writer's craft. New York Times bestselling author Emiko Jean joins BOOKSTORM Podcast to talk about The Return of Ellie Black! What a powerful discussion! We talked about the quarter million women who go missing each year, with the vast majority of those being women or girls under twenty one. What is fueling these atrocities - is it primarily an expression of male rage or power? As a society, do we need to dig deeper to understand the factors driving this type of aggression so that we can better prevent it? We talked about survival, guilt, and post-traumatic stress ... even the aftermath of tragedy. We explored the idea of victim shaming, especially of young women who suffer an attack by a male assailant. Can a victim ever be blamed? Isn't that lessening the fault of the assailant? Or are we also responsible for our wellbeing? WOW - join us. You'll be so glad you did. You can find more of your favorite bestselling authors at BOOKSTORM Podcast! Today, on Hook of a Book, I review Tokyo Ever After, by Emiko Jean! Tokyo Ever After is sort of like a version of The Princess Diaries. This YA story was so good — I can't wait to read the sequel! Emiko Jean is a Japanese-American author-- but, before she was an author, she was an entomologist (bug catcher), candle maker, florist, and teacher. She strongly believes in “faking it till you make it” and asking for forgiveness rather than permission. Emiko has written many YA novels, like, Tokyo Ever After, which was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club YA Pick. But her most recent novel, Mika in Real Life, is a bit more grown-up. With themes about sexual assault, motherhood, adoption, and coming of age when you're already an adult. The protagonist, Mika, has disappointed her mother too many times to count, has given up her passions, can't keep a job, and her love life is– well, nonexistent. The novel begins at the peak of all this messiness when Mika gets a call… and it's the daughter she put up for adoption 16 years ago. We speak with Emiko Jean about her new novel, motherhood, and how her book explores and deconstructs the 'model minority myth.'

Young adult author Emiko Jean is out with her first book for adults – Mika in Real Life. In this episode, we hear Jean in conversation with WBUR's Celeste Headlee about the book, in which a teen girl – Penny – tries to connect with her birth mother Mika. Jean says that just as Penny and Mika struggle to figure out who they are, much of the book mirrors the author's own identity struggle as a Japanese-American woman.

The novel centers around a directionless 35-year-old Japanese-American woman who's contacted by the daughter she gave up for adoption.

Narrator Ali Ahn brings plenty of personality and heart to Emiko Jean's young adult rom-com about a high school senior who has discovered an incredible secret —her father is royalty. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this fun and sweet story in the spirit of THE PRINCESS DIARIES. Raised in California by her mother, Izumi Tanaka doesn't know her father's name until she discovers it accidentally, and she is shocked to learn he is the Crown Prince of Japan. When Izzy is invited to travel to Japan to meet her family, Ahn's delivery reflects her conflicted reactions to the many unfamiliar customs and expectations—and her handsome bodyguard. Strong-willed Izzy worries she'll never truly be accepted by her father's traditional family. A delightful start to a new series. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Emiko Jean realized that although she had always been a voracious reader, she never believed that she could be a writer because she had never read a YA book written by a Japanese American like herself while she was growing up. Now, Emiko is only just beginning to tell the kinds of stories she wants to see more of in the world. Her latest book, Tokyo Ever After, features a protagonist descended from Japanese royalty and was written to be a lighthearted and joyful read.Purchase a copy on Amazon or Bookshop.Amazon: https://amzn.to/3urtw3TBookshop: https://bit.ly/3i7dMjU See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
