The worst thing that's ever happened to the Democrats is democracy. It must be quite an existential crisis that, after all that, the rest of the country rejected their opinion of Donald Trump. That the guy they said was a rapist, a racist, a fascist, a dictator, a Nazi, a bigot, a transphobe, a misogynist, a Russian asset, a criminal, a felon, a fraudster, a fake, a traitor, an election denier and insurrectionist, an extremist, a terrorist, a white supremacist, a phony that they impeached twice and indicted four times, and became the first presidential candidate with a mug shot, and to be convicted of a felony still won the popular vote. That has got to really burn. But it isn't the Trump side that is now in a perpetual state of shock because it existed inside a utopian bubble, cutting itself off from the rest of America. It isn't the Trump side that cosplayed World War II for so long that it lost touch with reality about either our world now or what really happened in World War II. It isn't the Trump side that was the empire.Their war-torn resistance fighters were so disgusted that none of the Democrats had done enough to “stop Hitler Trump and his Nazi leader, Elon Musk,” that their approval numbers were at historic lows. DO SOMETHING, their supporters cried. So Cory Booker took to the Senate floor to remind them of what they still stand for. And to rally the troops. He prepared in advance for the performance of his life. He denied himself food and water to go the distance. It was, for him, a chance to audition for the part of Charismatic Leader, the democrats so desperately need.Booker found a way: It's not Left or Right but right or WRONG.It's a far cry from Obama's “not red states or blue states, but the United States.” The Democrats no longer believe that. They went from “don't normalize Trump and his supporters” to it's more than justified to demonize, dehumanize, even terrorize them. They are “bad people.” They're no longer welcome. Not in our culture, restaurants, movie theaters, family gatherings, and, most of all, our democracy.Their anger stems from their class privilege of having everything they need, yet they can't accept losing something they want. Here is Batya Ungar-Sargon:Either the Democrats really are caught up in a mass delusion about who Trump is and why he won, or else they're the drama club, and none of it was ever real.Splendor in the GrassI wasn't just in the Drama Club in high school. I was the undisputed queen. Just ask anyone who went to high school with me. I was a terrible student. I barely graduated. My nickname was “no-show Stone,” but the one thing I showed up for was the Drama Club. That's me as Elizabeth Proctor in the high school production of The Crucible. In case you've never seen or read The Crucible, Elizabeth Proctor was John Proctor's pregnant wife who was accused of witchcraft but who was spared because of the presumed innocence of her baby. Her husband, John Proctor, would be hanged.I could never have known that all of these decades later, we'd all be living in a Salem of our own making, and I'd be once again an accused and condemned witch.Inside the drama club, I had a magic mirror - a small group of people who thought I hung the moon. My Drama teacher thought that too. I was his favorite, at least for a time. I didn't know the word “grooming” back then, but looking back on it, I see that's probably what he was doing—a pinch here, a grope there. On the last day of my junior year, he French kissed me just before I went away for summer break. That Summer, he drove up to my house and dropped off a copy of the play Splendor in the Grass. I took that to mean I would be cast as the lead, the part Natalie Wood played in the movie. As the queen of the Drama Club, I got all of the leading roles. Of course, I would play Deannie. But when it came time to cast the play, the part went to someone who wasn't even in the drama club. She was the prettiest girl in school: the Head Cheerleader and the Homecoming Queen. Our teacher had broken the silent code of the drama club - nobody from the outside is allowed in. Because if they do, our fantasy world is shattered. That's all we had. We weren't the popular kids, the cheerleaders, the jocks, the science nerds. We were people who didn't belong anywhere else. But we also liked escaping into a fantasy world of being another person other than ourselves.During the Me Too movement, my friends would always bring up our drama teacher, but honestly, I was more angry that he'd given my part away to a prettier girl.In reality, the Homecoming Queen was the right person to play Deannie, even if our teacher probably just had the hots for her. She was good, too—better than I would have been. Because she was popular, everyone in the school came to see the play.We were all big fish in a small pond, which gave us power we weren't willing to relinquish. But having the whole school see our play meant reality was here, whether we liked it or not.I often think about the drama club now when I watch Christopher Guest's hilarious Waiting for Guffman, which is about a self-important director of a small town theater group and their delusions of grandeur. And that's also what I see when I look at the democrats and all of the performative protesters and activists on the Left, from Eric Swalwell to AOC to Jasmine Crocket to Chuck Schumer to Cory Booker, to all of these delusional people who believe Musk did the Nazi salute and Trump is Hitler. They are Waiting for Guffman. They are the drama club. It's a cosplay fantasy, a dystopian Renaissance Faire. None of it is real. The American people have been watching this performative outrage for almost a decade. They wanted to turn the channel so badly they voted for Donald Trump a second time, and now, here they all are, once again, caterwauling about the very democracy that just took them out of power. They still believe that doing exactly the same thing for this long will get them a different result, the very definition of insanity. But there's a darkness too, a rising violence. What they all mean when they say “Hands off” is not just “hands off” our government, but “hands off” everything else too.Along with keying Teslas and violent outbursts against Trump supporters, there is a hashtag making the rounds on TikTok called “when it happens,” where users fantasize about Trump's death.Identity First vs. America First.During the last Civil War, the two conflicting realities were that a country founded on freedom could not own human beings vs. the false reality that slaves could not survive as free human beings and that there would be chaos and collapse if things changed. Now, we find ourselves once again at a crossroads with two factions believing in two completely separate realities. This time, it's not about westward expansion but rather our migration onto the new frontier of the internet, AI, and the upcoming robot revolution. What will this country be going forward? What will be our values? What will define male and female? What will decide power? You can see each of our potential futures laid out before us. Whole generations have come of age in virtual reality, where they can choose their own avatars and have their own audiences for their own show. It's all performative. But to be included, you must follow the rules. If you don't, out you go. This is a public episode. As you will have heard many times on this podcast series so far, Paul Weller has a long tradition of supporting up and coming music artists. Welsh neo soul artist Nia Wyn is another huge talent to get his stamp of approval and it was a real joy to hear her story on this episode of the Paul Weller Fan Podcast. Her music takes influence from Soul, RnB, Jazz, Pop and Hip-Hop to create something new, something that is uniquely hers. Trust me when I say that her incredible, unmistakable vocals will blow you away with each release and live performance....In our podcast chat, we dig into the recent past to hear about her connections with Paul Weller from a WhatsApp intro that leads to Paul picking Nia up from Woking station for a songwriting and recording session at Black Barn Studio (Paul Weller HQ) and the creation of her beautiful soulful song “Turnstyles”.Released as a single in June 2018, Paul plays bass, hammond organ and piano and sings backing vocals on the song.We also chatted about live performance and as you'll hear on the podcast, Nia opened for Paul at his concert in York in August 2018, along with supporting him on dates for the rescheduled-rescheduled On Sunset / Fat Pop tour in 2021.2022 saw her release more new music with her Magical Thinking EP and she also reached the finals of Glastonbury Festival's Emerging Talent competition. That Summer saw her go on to play the Somerset festival along with Latitude and she supported Paul Weller again at Lytham Festival... Not a bad year right?Nia is another artist, to be endorsed by Paul, whose songs take you on a journey.A raw and powerful style of storytelling that at times can be observational - stories about others, in the third person or more often it would seem that she is singing something deeply personal, open, honest and introspective. Not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve to tackle topics that may appear to be taboo (her own mental health challenges as example) in an age where those areas of discussion really shouldn't be.She has an incredible knack of making you think with her music whilst also having that all important gift of melody. Every release so far has been pretty special and builds on what has come before and I'm genuinely excited by what is to come in the future. Hosted on Acast. In celebration of All The Best reaching 500 episodes, we're looking back into the archives and replaying episodes that, while recorded in years past, remain relevant today. This week we're bringing you ‘Coast to Coast', an episode that first aired in September 2012. For many people, the ocean rouses a sense of excitement and adventure, a chance to do something that hasn't been done before. Enjoy these stories, inspired by the place where the land meets the sea. ***************** Stories ahoy! All the Best brings you intriguing tales from the high seas. A South American geologist's rough-and-tumble journey on a raft to Australia leads to a life-changing encounter with Gough Whitlam. And, the real Puberty Blues: a young girl tries to join the blokey surf culture of the 1970s- but an initiation rite in the water goes terribly wrong. That Summer of '75Forget the TV series and the book: the real Puberty Blues started in the summer of 1975. Shé Hawkes was 14, and had begun doing something absolutely outrageous on the beach. Shé- a girl- had started to surf. It wasn't something that the other surfers were going to let her get away with. These days, Shé is a writer and academic: read her piece about women breaking into the surf culture of 1970s Australia, and a fictionalised version of her summer of '75. That Summer in Berlin Paperback by Lecia Cornwall In the summer of 1936, while the Nazis make secret plans for World War II, a courageous and daring young woman struggles to expose the lies behind the dazzling spectacle of the Berlin Olympics. German power is rising again, threatening a war that will be even worse than the last one. The English aristocracy turns to an age-old institution to stave off war and strengthen political bonds—marriage. Debutantes flock to Germany, including Viviane Alden. On holiday with her sister during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Viviane's true purpose is more clandestine. While many in England want to appease Hitler, others seek to prove Germany is rearming. But they need evidence, photographs to tell the tale, and Viviane is a genius with her trusty Leica. And who would suspect a pretty, young tourist taking holiday snaps of being a spy? Viviane expects to find hatred and injustice, but during the Olympics, with the world watching, Germany is on its best behavior, graciously welcoming tourists to a festival of peace and goodwill. But first impressions can be deceiving, and it's up to Viviane and the journalist she's paired with—a daring man with a guarded heart—to reveal the truth. But others have their own reasons for befriending Viviane, and her adventure takes a darker turn. Suddenly Viviane finds herself caught in a web of far more deadly games—and closer than she ever imagined to the brink of war.

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Charles Rocha, the songwriter/producer who fronts That Summer and the founder of Ring Records. That Summer is a genre defining band, mixing elements of singer/songwriter and pop/rock musings with alternative and punk rock ethos. The band is fronted by songwriter/producer Charles Rocha. Charles Rocha presents an autobiographical collection of songs about loss, time, travel, and struggles with addiction and alcoholism. The band hopes to reach anyone who feels misunderstood, or like they just don't fit in. Rocha began touring at the age of 17 with some of his favorite bands including Bad Religion, NOFX, Lagwagon and Craig's Brother. Born in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles Rocha has lived and created music all over the world. After a brief spell in Nashville, Rocha moved to Florida to work for his grandfather and finish his Bachelor's degree in English. At this time Rocha began recording his own songs from his bedroom. This evolved into That Summer. The Hearth EP Vol. 1 was finished with Roger Lima (Less Than Jake, Rehasher) at The Moathouse Recording Studio in Gainesville, Florida in 2013. 2022 finds Rocha feeling “right at home”; living in Los Angeles and working with Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks, Bad Religion) at Hetson Sound. Most recently, That Summer celebrated its first major radio airplay, when Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Eric Clapton, George Harrison) added their lush, lap-steel laden cover of “Wildflowers” to his playlist on Tom Petty Radio. Currently, Rocha is working with Ian Cross (Janet Jackson, Anthrax, Gwen Stefani, Dishwalla), Ryan Greene (Fat Wreck Chords) and Matt Pinfield to combine their patchwork of styles for what will be a highly anticipated full length album on LA indie-label, Ring Records. Rocha credits the Musicares organization for helping him get settled in Los Angeles, and for saving his life in 2019. Ring Records is an independent rock ‘n' roll record label based in Los Angeles, CA. Established in 2020, Ring Records hopes to provide artists and musicians with a place to call home for their bands, songs and records. [REBROADCAST FROM May 17, 2021] Best-selling author Jennifer Weiner discusses her novel, That Summer. A starred review in Booklist called it “a summer banger with a ripped-from-the-headlines plot.”

Could have fooled me! Sprung in die Jetztzeit: Was Diana will, ist Rache. Daisy Shoemaker can't sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful, her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she's got it good. So why is she up all night? While Daisy tries to identify the root of her dissatisfaction, she's also receiving misdirected emails meant for a woman named Diana Starling, whose email address is just one punctuation mark away from her own. While Daisy's driving carpools, Diana is chairing meetings. While Daisy's making dinner, Diana's making plans to reorganize corporations. Diana's glamorous, sophisticated, single-lady life is miles away from Daisy's simpler existence. When an apology leads to an invitation, the two women meet and become friends. But, as they get closer, we learn that their connection was not completely accidental. Who IS this other woman, and what does she want with Daisy? From the manicured Main Line of Philadelphia to the wild landscape of the Outer Cape, written with Jennifer Weiner's signature wit and sharp observations, That Summer is a story about surviving our pasts, confronting our futures, and the sustaining bonds of friendship.

That number has probably changed since I spoke with author Jennifer Weiner, but at the time of this interview, 258 weeks was the amount of time that her books have been on the New York Times Bestseller list. That makes up nearly a quarter of her entire career that began 20 years ago with her debut, Good In Bed . Her latest book is That Summer , the second book in what she's calling her “beach trilogy.” It's a beach read, but not in the traditional sense, as it tackles sexual assault and the #MeToo movement. National Polygamy Advocate
Portland Phoenix Jeff Inglis interviewed Mark Henkel - Nov 2009

National Polygamy Advocate

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2020 35:40

National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed by Jeff Inglis, the Managing Editor for The Portland Phoenix newspaper, in Portland, Maine, on November 13, 2009. This interview occurred 10 days after Maine voters, by a "People's Veto" referendum in a mid-term election, repealed a new same sex marriage law. (NOTE:, same sex marriage later became legalized "again" in Maine by the nationwide US Supreme Court decision of Obergefell v. Hodges on June 26, 2015). For all of this, Mark Henkel had written an op-ed about how the law was neither about "Marriage Protection" nor about "Marriage Equality," and he was waiting for whether the statewide daily newspaper (Portland Press Herald / Maine Voices) would publish it. The Portland Press Herald's new owner/CEO and Editor Richard Conner refused to publish it. (That Summer, Conner had replaced the then-terminated previous Editor John Porter. Two years after that, Conner himself, also left the, being accused by the same newspaper for misusing over $530,000 of company funds for his own personal use.) Conner’s refusal thereby opened the opportunity for the weekly newspaper, The Portland Phoenix, to show "the article that the Press Herald was too afraid to publish." The Managing Editor of this weekly newspaper, The Portland Phoenix, loved this idea. In this interview, Mark Henkel exposed the “positive but passive aggressiveness” of The Portland Press Herald's main conservative opinion writer Michael (M.D.) Harmon *who knew of Henkel for the previous 3 years, yet never once allowed Henkel to be reported or to be published), the hypocrisy of the Portland Press Herald’s main liberal opinion writer Bill Nemitz (who directly knew about Mark Henkel with a press kit and yet still acted as if Henkel did not exist, even while writing a story very similar to one of Mark Henkel’s known soundbites), and the outright hateful bigotry of same sex marriage advocate Mary Bonauto (who publicly had made highly bigoted-statements about unrelated consenting adult polygamy, and who also would later be one of the attorneys who presented before the US Supreme Court for the Obergefell v. Hodges Decision of June 26, 2015, that legalized same sex marriage nationwide). Mark Henkel explained how the article offered the solution by which either losing side in the same sex marriage can go forward, save face, and achieve a win for all sides: The Polygamy Rights Win-Win Solution. He explained that, as the politically liberal side had then just lost the "People's Veto" vote 10 days previously, he recommended that they should actually learn from Mark Henkel's arguments to instead "use conservative arguments to persuade conservatives." Mark Henkel provided numerous soundbites and educational points. Also, the interview flow and mood was very friendly, respectful, and even fun with both Henkel and the Managing Editor laughing a number of times - all making this a must-hear interview. The Managing Editor of The Portland Phoenix published Henkel’s article that next week, the one that the Portland Press Herald had been too afraid to publish. This provides another example of how the big Manufactured News Corporations do not report the news, but they instead decide what they will and will not let the public read or even learn about in their media sources. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

Read and written by Ryan Monkman, for the new Cider Chat segment titled "Stories in Ciderville". For additional reading and inspiration look to the children's book An Apple for Harriet Tubman.   Northern Spy by Ryan Monkman About 200 years ago, somewhere in Upstate New York, a boy ran through the woods. He hid in a bush under a tree. Then, when no one found him, he stood up and grabbed an apple above him. He bit the apple then spat it out. It was horribly acidic. The boy ran back to town and convinced a friend to take a bite of the “wonderful” apple. Soon it was a game: try the apple, spit it out. But the boy’s father liked the acid. The two of them walked back to the forest and picked the tree clean. They put the apples in bins then put those bins in their root cellar. Everyday the father would have an apple with breakfast. Everyday the son would try to sucker a new friend. After a few weeks in storage, the apples grew sweet. The father didn’t like them anymore and the son’s game grew boring. So the crates sat, untouched and unloved, next to the potatoes. The boy’s mother found the apples in mid Spring. Somehow they still looked and tasted like apples after months underground. She took them to a church picnic. There’s a tradition in Quaker communities; speak boldly when the Spirit calls you to. A neighbor spoke and the town listened. That summer they propagated the wild apple. If you plant an apple seed, you’ll get an apple tree but the fruit will be different. With each generation the seeds morph and mutate. The apple changes. If you want to preserve the beauty of a varietal, you have to take a cutting of the original tree and plant the cutting. That’s what the town did. They sent a team into the woods to collect small clippings of the wild tree. Each cut was only two inches long. Those cuttings were then slipped into a piece of root from another tree then the two were planted together. The bottom half rooted in the ground, the top half bearing identical fruit to the wild tree. The grafted trees were divided throughout the town. Each family grew a handful of trees and the church planted an orchard. Eight years past. Then one day in May the town awoke to a bursting of pink flowers. That Summer they saw their first fruit. That Fall they picked their first apples. The boy, now a man, loaded up a wagon and headed South. Then another wagon followed. And another. That Winter the town was empty. The wagons would pull into a new town. The driver asked for the Station Master, dropped off a whack of apples, then left without another word. In each town the pattern repeated. When the wagon was empty the driver returned home, refilled, then hit the road again. By February the town was out of apples. Traffic on the Underground Railroad surged that Spring. One of the first tastes of freedom was a piece of fruit that never seemed to rot. Cloaked in secrecy, the apple earned a nickname; the Northern Spy. by Ryan Monkman Ryan lives in Prince Edward County, Ontario making and selling cider with his family and cider team at FieldBird Cider. ___________ Have a story to tell for the "Stories in Ciderville" segment? A new feature project by award-winning OHIO Eminent Scholar of Film Rajko Grlić recently received major funding from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre. The College of Fine Arts interviewed Grlić to learn more about the project and about his approach to filmmaking. The film uses the main theme of the novel, ON THE EDGE OF REASON, written by Miroslav Krleza, to build an almost completely new story placed in the present. The script is co-written by Ante Tomic, best-selling author in Croatia, and Grlić. Support for the script’s first draft is from the College’s Dean’s Development Grant. Two of Grlić’s films, "The Constitution" and "That Summer of White Roses" are on Amazon Prime. This interview was recorded via a video calling platform on March 27, 2020, in Athens, Ohio, and not in person due to Ohio's stay-at-home orders in response to the corona virus pandemic. Fear and Anxiety Wrap-Up

More than Milk

Fear and Anxiety Wrap-Up This week we're tying everything we've talked about in this series together, including a personal story about a fear I had, how I dealt with it (or didn't at first!), and the impact that has had on my life. Show Notes: Welcome back to More than Milk. I’m Hannah Rebekah. Today we’re wrapping up our series on fear by doing a little bit of review and tying together everything we’ve talked about so far. Fear is made possible when we move from mentally trusting God with everything to trusting in ourselves, our school, our car, or anything else. This happens all the time because we are forgetful people who are more likely to trust what we can see and touch rather than what we know is there but don’t experience physically so much. Fear actually happens when our trust in whatever it is we were trusting that’s not God is shaken. This could be anything from our car not starting, to political upheaval, to someone we love ending up in the hospital. In the moments when we hear the news, we feel the fear of what could happen now. Though you may or may not be able to recognize it, the thought process goes like this: I didn’t think this was possible (or I knew it was POSSIBLE, but I never thought it would happen to ME); now that this has happened, there are so many other terrible possibilities that could happen, too! And then we spiral in fear and doubt and “what if” scenarios. Fear is wrong because God is all powerful, sovereign, and in control of all things. He has promised that He will work all things together for our good. To be afraid of what could happen is to say God is either incompetent to take care of us or ignorant of our real needs. In order to fight fear, we have to first realize that we’re afraid, agree with God that it’s wrong, and be willing to fight back against it. Next, we have to dig down to understand our fear, to know what it is we’re really afraid of and admit that to God, ourselves, and another person. Finally, we have to identify the truth about God and His care and promises toward us and then tell it to ourselves over and over again, every time that fear starts to creep back into our minds. The reason that we battle fear is three-fold. First, God commands it. Second, conquering fear allows us to do the work of God’s Kingdom with a lot more freedom. Third, when we are successful at ridding fear from our lives—even a little bit—we are happier and more content with our lives. These three reasons are all connected. God created us to be happy in Him, to do His work, and to obey Him. When we fight back against fear by trusting God and His promises, we make all three of these purposes happen. Back in the Fall of 2016, I started working as an apprentice in the Guest Services department at Grace Adventures. This meant that I was responsible for contacting groups that were planning to come and make sure we had what we needed from them and they had what they needed from us. My primary mode of doing this was email because I had a long-standing fear of talking on the phone, specifically of calling people I don’t know. This avoidance technique worked pretty well until late Winter, early Spring, when we had to make camper calls. This is where all of the staff get a list of former camper families who have not yet registered for the summer and we spend a night or two a week calling them to see if they are interested in registering. It was like a nightmare come true. Somehow I powered through and survived, in large part because the fear of disappointing those I’m responsible to was stronger than that of talking to strangers on the phone. It was at that point that I realized I had a problem, though. I didn’t want to admit it to anyone, but I also didn’t want to struggle with it the rest of my life. That Summer, my role expanded a bit, and I was responsible for a lot more groups, many of whom did not communicate well over email and needed to be called. I finally admitted my fear to someone I trusted, which broke its power a little bit and helped cement that it was wrong and needed to be dealt with. I had recently finished writing the section in my book on fear about how to combat it. I knew what steps to take. I figured out that I’m afraid of misspeaking, giving the wrong information, or making some similar mistake that makes me look incompetent and reflects poorly on the organization I’m working for. This stems from two facets of my biggest identity issue. I falsely believe that my worth is based on my personal competence, and those who’s opinions matter the most about whether or not I am competent are those in positions over me. So if I make a mistake on the phone that makes that person think I’m incompetent, I think that diminishes by value, but if word of that somehow got back to my supervisor or the president of the organization, that would be crushing. This was an identity lie that I had been actively fighting for years, but it still had little footholds in places like fear of talking on the phone. What’s the truth that combats this? My value is defined and fixed by Christ. I will make mistakes—everyone does. When I do, it is not a reflection of what I am worth but of my humanity, and it makes me more relatable and approachable. If I really fail, it gives me the opportunity to display the grace and power of God in handling that situation. Those in positions of authority over me are just human, too. I can’t live by their measurement because it is at once too high and also too low. In some areas they will never be really pleasable, and that’s okay. In other areas, their standards aren’t as high as God’s, and that’s who I should be aiming to please. The summer became much easier as I started fighting this fear. There were still times when I would have to lock myself in the bathroom and tell myself those truths over and over before I could go back to my desk and make a particular phone call. A year later, I was asked to be the Welcome Center Manager at the campground. One of my biggest hesitations at first was that would require me to make a heck of a lot of phone calls to people I didn’t know. If I hadn’t been dealing with it the summer before, I doubt I would have accepted. The first month there, I had to fight the urge to have my staff make most of the phone calls. By the end of my time there, I didn’t even hesitate picking up the phone. Here’s why I tell you that story. Making phone calls to strangers is not the biggest fear I’ve ever had. It seemed fairly unobtrusive at first, something I could get around for the most part and just suffer through when I absolutely had to make a call. In general, it wasn’t changing my life much—or so I thought. What I didn’t realize was that this fear was like a leaf off a big identity lie tree. I had worked hard to chop big branches of that tree down, but there was more left to it than I realized. By fighting this fear, I am more confident in my identity in general, and that has impacted how much of myself I am willing to “put out there” in all areas of my life. I can point to multiple different opportunities I never would have taken a couple years ago that I jumped into now—some of which would seem to have nothing to do with talking on the phone. It can be very easy to look at a fear and say something like, “It doesn’t matter that much.” “I can suffer through that one.” Why would you want to? I know the reason, of course. In order to fight back, you’re probably going to have to tell someone about it. You’ll have to confront head-on whatever lie you’re believing about yourself, some version of, “You’re not good enough.” It’s easier to just sweep that under the rug and pretend like it doesn’t exist, but it doesn’t disappear when you try not to think about it. It spits out more lies, fears, and causes underlying anxiety, doing its very best to make you miserable. To confront that lie is frightening because you believe it, and if you don’t have enough ammo, it will eat you alive. That’s why you need the truth of who you are in Christ and someone else who knows scripture who can help you. In and of yourself, no, you are not good enough. But you are not alone. You’ll never be alone. Jesus Christ gave up His eternal glory, became a human, and lived a sinless life so He could die in your place and break the chains of darkness that held you. You are worth more than you know. If you have accepted Jesus’ offer of forgiveness, He has given you everything you need for life and godliness. In Him, you are enough. You will always be enough because He will never leave you. Nothing you do can make Him love you less, abandon you, or punish you. He will put you through hard things to refine you and make you a better person, to bring you into closer relationship with Him, but He promises to be with you through it. I AM THAT I AM is the most powerful being in the universe, and He loves you more deeply and intimately than anyone else could, even more than you can imagine. In Him, you are enough, and because that is true, you don’t have to be afraid of anything. I hope you’re willing to fight until you really, wholly believe that truth. Thanks for joining me on the podcast today. This concludes our series on fear and anxiety. Next week we’re going to start a new series on listening to the Holy Spirit and knowing and following God’s will for your life. I hope you’ll join me then.

Paul could probably start a country music career of his own inspired by tales of various and sundry "rooms" and roommates from his five years spent in Eugene, Oregon, before landing back in his home state of Illinois. He prefers telling the stories through the lens of Garth Brooks songs, and we have a wonderful time singing the megastar's classic lyrics in between Paul's memories of living with bandmates, rats, and the cougar-esque manager of the coffee shop he worked at (look into the song That Summer for more details on their relationship). We eventually get into his Chicago roommate experiences (including when he was my roommate for about a month) and some other country/rock superstars we both enjoy. This is a story about a young man and his love for living with creative people and his longtime crush on/worship of/emulation of Garth.

The History of the Christian Church

This 126th episode of CS is titled, Yet Again.Donations to keep the CS host site up are welcome and needed. You can do so at sanctorum.us. Just look for the “Donate” link.In the last episode, we considered the Second Great Awakening and ended with this . . .By the 1850s the United States was thriving, largely because of the benefits brought by the Awakening. The Mid-West was being developed, the economy booming. People made 18% interest on their investments. But as is so often the case, economic prosperity turned into a neglect of the Spirit. The pursuit of pleasure replaced the pursuit of God. The nation was politically divided over the issue of slavery.  And it wasn't just States that were divided. Churches and denominations split over itInto this national argument that ended up tearing the country in two was added a dose of religious turmoil.A veteran and farmer named William Miller rediscovered the doctrine of the 2nd Coming. For generations, most of the Church considered Bible prophesy a closed book. Miller began teaching on the Return of Christ. But he made the mistake many have and said Christ would return in 1844. About a million people followed his views.  When it didn't happen, they were bitterly disillusioned because they'd sold their homes, businesses, and farms. Skeptics piled on the fanaticism of the Millerites and fired up a new round of mocking faith.  Then, in 1857, things began to change.Another revival began as a movement of prayer. It was leaderless, though it produced several notable leaders. In September 1857, a businessman named Jeremiah Lanphier printed up a leaflet on the importance of prayer. It announced there would be a weekly prayer meeting at Noon, in the upper room of the North Dutch Reformed Church in Manhattan. When the time for the first meeting came, only Lanphier was there. He prayed anyway and at 12:35, six more businessmen on their lunch break came up the stairs. They prayed till 1 pm. As they broke up to return to work, they agreed they'd been so moved, they'd meet the following week at the same time and place. The next week, their number doubled to 14. They sensed something special was about to happen and agreed to meet every day, Monday-Saturday in that room at Noon. A few weeks later the room overflowed and they filled the basement, then the main sanctuary. A nearby Methodist Church opened its doors for noontime prayer. When it filled, Trinity Episcopal Church opened. Then church after church filled with people praying at noon, Monday-Saturday; mostly businessmen on their lunch break.Throughout the remainder of 1857, prayer meetings spread throughout the States. In Feb. 1858, New York newspaper editor Horace Greeley sent a reporter out to cover the story of the growing movement. The reporter went by horse and buggy and was able to make a dozen stops during the noon hour. He estimated there were over 6000 businessmen praying at those stops. Greeley was so surprised he made the story the next day's headline. Other papers didn't want to be outdone, so they began to report on the revival. The publicity further fanned the flames and more began showing up. Soon every auditorium and hall in downtown NY was filled.  Then, theaters filled. We might wonder what were these prayer meetings like. They were run by laymen, not professional clergy. Pastors were often present but did not conduct the meetings. They might be asked to open pray or read a scripture, but then the meeting was turned over to fifty minutes or more of prayer. There was a remarkable sense of unity that marked the meetings. Those who attended came from different churches but were cautious about debating doctrines. There was more a concern to focus on the things they agreed on. They were there to pray and that's what they did.At one prayer meeting in Michigan led by a layman, he said, “I see my pastor and the Methodist minister are here. Will one of you read a scripture and the other pray, then we'll get started.”  They did, then the laymen said, “I'm not used to this kind of public and impromptu prayer so we'll follow the example we've read about in the NY papers. We have so many here today please write your request down then pass them to the front. We'll read them one at a time, and pray over each one.”The first request said, “A praying wife asks the prayers of this company for the conversion of her husband who's far from God.” (That's certainly a common request.) But immediately a blacksmith stood up and said, “My wife prays for me. I must be that man. I need to be converted. Would you please pray for me?” A lawyer said, “I think my wife wrote that note because I know I'm far from God.”  Five men all claimed the request was surely for them. All were converted in a matter of just a few minutes. This was common at the beginning of the revival. People were converted during the prayer meetings. They'd simply express their need for salvation then would be prayed for by the rest. One minister stood up and said he'd stayed till 3 PM the day before answering the questions of those who wanted Christ. He announced his church would be open each evening from then on for the preaching of the Gospel. Soon, every church was holding similar meetings. As the revival spread across the States, 10,000 were converted each week. In Newark, NJ, of a population of 70,000; 2,785 were brought to faith in 2 months. At Princeton University, almost half the students came to Christ and half of those entered full-time ministry. The revival swept the colleges of the nation. On Feb. 3rd, 1858 in Philadelphia, a dozen men moved their daily prayer meeting from the outskirts of the city to downtown. They met at the James Theater, the largest in The City. A couple weeks later sixty were attending. By the end of March, 6,000 were literally crammed in.That Summer, churches united to hold mass services. They erected big-top tents and conducted evangelistic meetings that thousands flocked to. In Ohio, 200 towns reported 12,000 converts in just two months. In Indiana, 150 small towns saw 4,500 come to Christ. In two years, of a national population of 30 million, 2 million made a profession of faith.Edwin Orr remarks that this points up the difference between Evangelism and Revival. In evangelism, the evangelist seeks the sinner. In revival, sinners come running to God. It was during this Revival that a young shoe salesman went to the Sunday School director of the Congregational Church in Chicago and said he wanted to teach a class. He was turned down because there were sixteen ahead of him waiting to teach. They put him on the wait-list. He told the director, “I want to do something NOW.”The director said, “Okay – start a class.”  He asked, “How?”He was told to “Go get boys off the street, take them to the country and teach them how to behave, then bring them in.”He went out to the alleys, gathered up a dozen street urchins and took them to the beach on Lake Michigan. He taught them Bible games and Scripture. Then brought them to the church where he was given a closet to hold his class.  That was the beginning of the ministry of Dwight Lyman Moody who went on to preach all over the US and England and led tens of thousands to Christ.Today, we're accustomed to the secular press giving a cold shoulder to the things of God. That's not new; it's usually that way. Even during times of revival, the world tends to stand back and wait for it to pass. They may give grudging acknowledgment of the good fruit revival brings, but they always dig up some critic who dismisses it as religious fanaticism and emotionalism.  So the Revival of 1857-8 stands out because the secular press received it with enthusiasm. Maybe because it was a movement that began in the sophisticated urban centers of the nation and spread their first. It was called The Businessman's Revival. These weren't backwoods, country hicks who were “getting religion.” They were educated, literate, successful people being profoundly changed for the better. In a day when nearly everyone read the newspaper, they were familiar with the revival because it consistently made headlines. There was near-universal approval of it.Yes, it had a few critics, but their objections were dismissed as the grousing of unreasonable skeptics and the envious. The Anglicans were at first against it, until their churches began filling with seekers; then they approved of it as they saw its glorious effect. The same happened among the Lutherans. The prayer meetings were marked by order. And the conversions were as frequent among the older and more mature members of a community as the younger. It quickly spread up into Canada, then across the Atlantic to Ireland, Scotland, and England where conservative estimates say 10% of the population was brought to faith in Christ.  In London, every theater and auditorium was filled for prayer. It was during this time Charles Spurgeon built the Metropolitan Tabernacle and Hudson Taylor started the China Inland Mission.  Just a mile from where Taylor started, William Booth formed the Salvation Army. All of these came out of the Revival of 1857-9. The revival spilled over into Europe and reached India. The Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa still celebrates the revival for the huge impact it had on them. Jamaica was covered as were numerous other cities and nations. What I'd like to note as we end this episode is the date of this revival. Its peak was from 1857-60. A few years later the US was torn in two by the Civil War; a bloody chapter in my nation's history. Many of those who died in the war were saved in the Revival. This seems to be a consistent pattern of revival; that it takes place just prior to a major war. Dr. Orr says that this has been a consistent pattern throughout our nation's history. The First Great Awakening occurred shortly before the Revolutionary War. The Second before the War of 1812. The Revival of 1857-8 before the Civil War. The Welsh Revival that so affected Great Britain, Europe, and the US came right before WWI. It's as though God pours out His Spirit to reap a harvest before evil falls and there's a great loss of life.
