Bobby Friction is joined by Marcus Collins, author of For the Culture: The Power Behind the World's Most Successful Brands, from Apple to Beyoncé, to explore how companies tailor their brands to different personal politics. “How we make our identity is unbelievably powerful.” “Nike is far more than just a sneaker company, it is an agent of social change.” “It all goes wrong when brands don't fully commit to particular politics.” www.patreon.com/bunkercast Book link: https://www.panmacmillan.com/authors/marcus-collins/for-the-culture/9781035020010 Presented by Bobby Friction. Ozempic is all over social media. You've probably seen dramatic before and after pictures of influencers showing off their weight loss. Even Elon Musk claims to be using it. But is it all it's cracked up to be? Bobby Friction is joined by Dr. Robert Kushner, one of the scientists who led research into the safety of the so-called ‘miracle' drug. to find out if this drug is the answer to the obesity crisis or just another money spinner for Big Pharma. “Obesity shouldn't be demonised, it is a disease to be treated.” “Once you stop using Ozempic, all the feelings of hunger and cravings for food come back.” “People don't push back against lifelong diabetes medication, so why does that change for a disease like obesity?” Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Bobby Friction. Mark Zuckerberg has transformed from unsuspecting nerd to an MMA fighter taking on arch tech bro Elon Musk. What has changed? Bobby Friction speaks to Wessie du Toit, a freelance writer behind the newsletter The Pathos of Things, about Zuckerberg 2.0 and if we should be concerned about his macho man transformation. “After the 2016 election, Zuckerberg became a pantomime villain so he needed a makeover.” “You don't see CEOs of energy companies threatening to fight each other in cage matches.” “His increasingly desperate efforts to build his metaverse just look sad.” Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Bobby Friction. Rap is huge in India and Desi hip-hop, the music and culture which combines the influences of hip-hop and the Indian subcontinent, is about to go global. Fan and champion Bobby Friction meets the leading artists on the scene as US rap legend Nas, begins a new hip-hop label in Mumbai. Nas has no doubt that the next global rap superstar will come from India but hip-hop culture is about more than shifting records. Rap is giving India's lower caste, religious minorities and women a space to speak truth to power and change the narrative around who can be a music star. Bobby speaks with Raja Kumari who was signed by Nas but is now stepping out on her own label Godmother Records with the intention of pushing female rappers in a male dominated scene. Prabh Deep is the Sikh class warrior and poet taking rap to new artistic levels from the grimiest parts of Delhi but also scoring hits with his take on life in India today. Prabh's label mate Ahmer is the politically conscious Muslim rapper from Kashmir who uses music to process the violence he has witnessed in the disputed territory. These rising stars alongside artists like KRSNA, Raftaar, Naezy and Divine are inspiring a new generation of hip-hop heads in Delhi, Mumbai and across India. Robot Koch on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/31/22 About Robot Koch - Robot Koch is an award winning artist/producer/composer from Berlin, living in Los Angeles. He has been steadily crafting a remarkably mature and original sound that expertly combines a deep and cinematic atmosphere, emotional reflection and forward thinking production. His visual music lends itself to picture and has been used on numerous TV Shows, Movie Trailers, Feature Films and Ad campaigns over the last few years. Robot Koch has been presenting his music live over the last decade, attracting a growing audience worldwide and appearing on the lineups of major festivals like Coachella, Sonar, Mutek and playing Boiler Room several times. Apart from pursuing his artist career, Robert Koch can be found working as a producer and writer for both indie and major artists worldwide, gaining gold and platinum records for his productions. For his album Sphere Koch expanded his musical horizon even more and created an immersive Full Dome Live Show with 3D surround sound and 360 visuals, which he developed in cooperation with visual artist Mickael Le Goff. Sphere sold out in Planetariums and Festivals worldwide, winning several awards for "Best Immersive Experience". Robert Koch, who also won the German Music Composers Award 2014 in the category 'Best Composer Electronic Music' runs his own label, Trees and Cyborgs, which he founded in 2016. Robot Koch's music is an intriguing dialogue between technology and nature that seems particularly relevant to the times we live in. It's a constantly evolving exploration of that what lies beyond. “It's like traveling through space, with all the beautiful and scary moments such a journey involves,” says Koch. It is this confluence of beauty and fear that likewise grants his music a shamanic motif, as the BBC's Bobby Friction noted on Koch's music; "It sounds like artificial intelligence discovering religion." Robot Koch has become well known for his cinematic compositions, which transcend music into real living experiences. For his album Sphere he took the exploration of space to new grounds that reached far beyond sound. Conceived as the soundtrack to an audiovisual live show with surround sound and 360 visuals, the project was not only a musical exploration of space, but also an observable voyage through outer and inner space. Made especially to be exhibited in planetariums and full-dome venues, Sphere sold out in venues from Berlin to San Francisco, Chicago to Moscow. The project which he created in collaboration with visual artist Mickael Le Goff has recently been shown at Sonar Barcelona and Mutek Montreal, and won “best immersive experience” at Macon Film Festival as well as "Best Dome Visuals" at the DTLA Film Festival. Koch and Le Goff continue to work on new immersive experiences, installations and films. British Asian DJ Bobby Friction helped usher in a golden age for young British Asians - as they defined their own exciting hybrid culture, with music, food, and art at its center. But as a child, suffering racist abuse led him to reject his own South Asian food heritage. These days, he says, even though racism in Britain hasn't gone away, Bobby's found his flavor - and he can't get enough of his mom's shahi paneer. *DJ and broadcaster BOBBY FRICTION drops by the Bureau to tell the tale of how, in the early 90s, a bunch of British kids from immigrant families ripped it up, mixing their traditional musical roots with drum and bass, electronic beats and urban sounds to form a new countercultural genre all their own - the Asian Underground. *We hear how the scene was a kind of counterpart to the way Western counterculture adapted and was inspired by Eastern mysticism and culture. *It's a rollicking personal tale by Bobby who was there at the beginning and who has been championing the scene ever since, soundtracked by some choice musical cuts. We dig deep into all sorts of other stuff too: growing up in 70s London, racism on the city streets, Bhangra, 'ghazals', ABBA, Prince, daytime gigs, Sikh culture. radical politics, why 'Black' was cool but 'Asian' was apparently not in London club culture. *And Bobby makes a plea for the British to realise the vision of becoming one people celebrating their diversity rather than splitting back into tribes. *For more on Bobby: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rydpz *For London Month of the Dead: https://www.londonmonthofthedead.com *For Continental Drifts: https://www.continentalDrifts.co.uk *The Bureau of Lost Culture: https://www.bureauoflostculture.com

Bobby Friction is a larger-than-life character, a Radio1 DJ, and a supporter of young people coming up in the creative industries. In this episode, we dive deep, buckle up, and enjoy the ride. 2.28- Bobby was doing an art degree channeling his inner rage about racism, by the time he'd gone to university he had survived an anti-Sikh genocide, and experienced the raw racism of the seventies. 4.45- For many years Bobby was the only Asian kid in the school, he spent his teenage years thinking he was the ugliest person that had ever been born because that's what people told him. 9.39- Bobby was dressing up extravagantly which attracted more racism and bullying but he just wanted to express himself, the only escape he had was Prince. 17.24 - His first friend at Radio One was John Peel, Bobby picked up on his attitude and approach to music. 19.52- Sikhism came out of a very intellectual Period in India's history and when his mother and father taught him about his religion, it made him think that everything, even religion should be critiqued constantly. 24.20- In 2020 and the rise of Black Lives Matter he only started to come to terms with the racism hr faced was when he was younger- he realised he didn't change because the racism stopped because it stayed, it was his makeup, dressing up and expression that helped him 25.01- In the seventies when Bobby was a child he used to be abused on the street by adults on a daily basis. 27.56- Bobby loves this country, he bleeds red, white and blue but he looks back at his childhood and thinks what was this country back then? 28.19- Bobby was once headbutted in the park by an adult when he was 10 years old. 31.08- The working class are usually the ones who physically racially abuse others but you realise that they are suffering under the system as well, it's the middle-class racist that you've got to watch out for because they are nice to you. The middle class accepts that racism is a problem and knows it's wrong. 33.38- People of colour at any class level have some kind of connection with working-class white people 35.10- Friendships with white working-class people tend to last but friendships with middle-class white people tend to fade because they constantly need to justify the relationship eg they tell you constantly that they went backpacking in India... 37.03- Bobby started BBC Radio One in his early thirties after thinking in his twenties ‘wouldn't it be great playing Asian music on Radio One' - it took him 10 long years of hard graft to achieve his mission. 40.06- Bobby finally felt good enough, overnight it had gone from a racist society to talking about gay rights and racism, it was pretty radical in the late nineties to say British Asian. Tony Blair's labour party changed things in a positive way. 42.42- Bobby was treated as a warrior that had won a battle after representing British Asians on Radio One and showcasing Asian music 43.53- Bobby handled the pressure and fame very well because of the long journey he'd taken to get there and because of the fact he was a grown-up in his thirties 49.08- People complain about the Asian network existing when really they want to be complaining about the general society and how BBC treats the Asian culture. 57.34- In 1984 in Delhi, a mob tried to get into the house and kill Bobby and his family. They locked themselves in the bathroom upstairs. His mum was hiding jewellery. They didn't know if they could trust their Hindu neighbours but they lead them to a tiny house where every Sikh in the neighbourhood was hiding out. 1.00.00- Prince indelibly shaped Bobby, he gave Bobby the chance to be himself, to be creative. He saved Bobby from all the racism and trauma. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ravinol/message

Elveden is a quaint rural Suffolk village with an intriguing history as the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire was buried here in 1893. Bobby Friction, a broadcaster and DJ who is Punjabi Sikh has grown up hearing stories all about the last King of the Sikh Empire. He visits Elveden for the first time for Open Country to see for himself the graveside on the day that marks 125 years since Duleep Singh died. Fist-pumping highs to tear-jerking lows - Bobby Friction from BBC Asian Network finds it all in this week's playlist as he discovers a powerful emotional virus lurking in the music of French composer Claude Debussy but says [spoiler] NO NO NOT NOT NOT NO NO to Dvorak. Bobby's playlist in full Bernstein: Candide Overture Couperin: Les Baricades Misterieuses (arranged by Thomas Ades) Debussy: Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum (from Children’s Corner) Dvorak: String Quartet in F AKA "American" Purcell: Music for a While (from Oedipus) Smetana: Vltava (from Ma Vlast) Bonus tracks Ravi Shankar's Raga Piloo The Humma Song from OK Jaanu
Bobby Friction has started to realise that his day-to-day online activities are not only being monitored but in some senses manipulated. How often he interacts with specific friends, pages or sites sculpts and filters everything and everyone he comes into contact with online. Since the Brexit vote and the US election these bubbles have become a really big issue - with talk of fake news, post-truth politics and online communities increasingly divided. When, like Bobby, you decide you've had enough of living in a social media bubble, what can you do to change things? Is it possible for an ordinary person a user of social media to beat the system or is it only technology nerds who can do it? And really - is there any benefit to breaking out of the bubble? The Producer is Perminder Khatkar.
The DJ and broadcaster Bobby Friction champions the Italian physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei. He is the first Great Lives guest to have named a child after his nominated hero. Galileo was born on 25th February 1564, in Pisa. He was a best-selling author - the Stephen Hawking of his day - who challenged Aristotle's view of the cosmos and was brought before the Inquisition. The presenter is Matthew Parris, with additional contributions from Dr David Berman from Queen Mary University of London. Together they discuss whether Galileo should have stood his ground and refused to recant, or if he should be recognised as someone whose experimentation helped define what science is. Produced by Perminder Khatkar. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.
