Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
May a Synagogue Have a Menorah With Seven Branches or Should it be Eight?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 3, 2025

The question recently arose regarding a certain synagogue that remodeled the interior of the building, and ordered special decorative Menorahs that adorned the wall both in the main sanctuary and in the study hall. These Menorahs are made from metal, use electric lights, and have seven branches, resembling the Menorah in the Bet Ha'mikdash. Some Rabbis questioned the propriety of having these Menorahs, as it is forbidden to make replicas of the furnishings of the Bet Ha'mikdash. Although this Menorah does not precisely resemble the Menorah in the Mikdash, as the branches do not have a receptacle for oil and wicks, and it runs on electricity, nevertheless, some argued that its resemblance to the Menorah in the Bet Ha'mikdash suffices to render it forbidden. This question was addressed already by Hacham Ovadia Yosef, in a responsum that appears in the posthumously published seventh volume of Yehaveh Da'at (142; listen to audio recording for citations of select passages from this responsum), and he cites numerous Poskim who explicitly allowed such Menorahs. One such Posek is Rav Reuven David Ha'kohen Borstein (the "Radach"), who writes that it is entirely permissible even "Le'chatehila" (from the outset) to make such a Menorah, because the branches are closed at the top without a receptacle for oil and wicks. As such, such Menorahs do not at all resemble the Menorah in the Bet Ha'mikdash, and it is therefore permissible to produce them and have them in the synagogue. Hacham Ovadia cites also Rav Moshe Stern of Debrecen (Hungary, 1914-1997), who adds that electric lights are not at all similar to oil lamps, and so it is certainly permissible to make an electric Menorah with seven branches. This was also the view of Rav Yitzhak Eizik Herzog (first Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, 1888-1959), and of Rav Bension Meir Hai Uziel (first Sephardic Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, 1880-1953). Hacham Ovadia relates in this responsum that he was first asked this question in 5722 (1972) by a rabbi in Tel-Aviv, and he ruled that this was permissible. He refers in this context to his earlier responsum on the subject, which appears in the first volume of Yabia Omer (Y.D. 12). He acknowledges, however, that there were some Poskim over the ages who felt it appropriate to be stringent in this regard. One especially interesting anecdote is a story told by the son-in-law of Rabbi Akiva Eiger (1761-1837) about the time when a Menorah was made for Rabbi Akiva Eiger's synagogue with seven branches. Even though the Menorah was round, and thus did not at all resemble the Menorah in the Bet Ha'mikdash, Rabbi Akiva Eiger insisted that an eighth branch must be added. The Menorah was returned to the smith, who had a very difficult time finding a way to add an eighth branch, and ended up ruining the entire Menorah. Rabbi Akiva Eiger's son-in-law did not understand why Rabbi Akiva Eiger was so insistent that an eight branch be added, but he nevertheless expresses respect for his father-in-law's strict fealty to Halacha. It is told that the decorative Menorot in Congregation Shaare Zion have eight branches following the instructions of Rav Yaakov Kassin (1900-1994), who felt that a seven-branched Menorah should not be used. Likewise, we have eight branches at our new The Edmond J Safra Synagogue. Nevertheless, in light of Hacham Ovadia's clear ruling, there is certainly room to be lenient and allow a seven-branched Menorah if it was already made. Summary: Some Rabbis ruled that it is forbidden to make or have a decorative electric Menorah with seven branches, because it resembles the Menorah that stood in the Bet Ha'mikdash. The majority opinion, however, permits such Menorahs, and this was the position of Hacham Ovadia Yosef.

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to talk about the 25th anniversary of Family Guy. Family Guy is an animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane. It premiered on FOX on January 31, 1999. Though FOX canceled the program in 2002, the network revived it in 2005 due to its success on DVD and Adult Swim. Since its debut, it has aired over 400 episodes. The show will move from Sundays to Wednesdays this March. Family Guy follows the Griffin family, who live in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island. Creator Seth MacFarlane voices dim-witted father Peter, as well as talking dog Brian and evil baby genius Stewie. Alex Borstein plays housewife Lois, while Seth Green and Mila Kunis (originally Lacey Chabert) voice teenagers Chris and Meg. MacFarlane also voices the Griffins' neighbor Glenn Quagmire. Other neighbors include Joe Swanson, voiced by Patrick Warburton, and Cleveland Brown, voiced by Arif Zahir (originally Mike Henry). Prior to his death, Adam West played a fictional version of himself, Mayor Adam West. Family Guy has been a lightning rod of controversy since the beginning, with jokes about many taboo subjects. Critics have both praised and criticized its reliance on cutaway gags. MacFarlane and Borstein have won Emmys for their voicework, and the show was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2009. Aaron and Josh talk about their past with Family Guy, before discussing the first episode. They also go into the show's characters, animation, humor, and legacy. For another FOX staple, you can listen Aaron and Josh's podcast on 24. Family Guy is streaming on Hulu. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popbreaktv/message

In October 2020, legal industry veterans Joe Borstein and Paul Stroka set out to change the legal tech sales paradigm by founding LexFusion as a go-to-market representative of a curated collection of companies across major categories of legal technology. As the company nears its third anniversary, Borstein joins LawNext to reflect on its successes and failures and to share where it is today. In addition, Borstein shares his perspective on the recent acquisition of Casetext by legal tech behemoth Thomson Reuters for $650 million in cash. As it happens, not only was Casetext one of the companies that LexFusion represented, but Borstein is a former executive of Thomson Reuters, where he worked as global director of Thomson Reuters Legal Managed Services (the former Pangea3).  Given that the Casetext deal was driven by its development of CoCounsel, an AI legal assistant powered by GPT-4 and developed in cooperation with GPT's developer OpenAI, Borstein also offers his views on the impact he sees generative AI having on the legal industry broadly and on the conversations he is having with law firm and corporate legal leaders.   This is Borstein's fourth appearance on LawNext. Over the course of 2022, the principals of LexFusion conferred with 435 law departments and 250 law firms. Why? Simply put, because that is what the company does. It is a go-to-market company that defines its purpose as “to grease the gears of commerce and rapidly increase the adoption of legal innovation.” On behalf of a group of curated legal innovation companies, it works with legal departments and law firms to help them understand how innovative products can benefit them.  As a result of those conversations, they came out of 2022 with a unique perspective on the legal market. In a recent post at the Legal Evolution blog, they discussed their take-aways from those conversations and shared some of what they have been telling law departments and lawyers.  “We executed NDAs with multiple law departments and law firms so we could dig beneath surface-level discussions of practical innovation into the painful realities of budgets and politics,” they wrote. “We uncovered far more chronic pain than even we anticipated.” What was the source of that chronic pain and what advice did LexFusion offer? In this episode of LawNext, two of the cofounders of LexFusion, Joseph Borstein, CEO, and Casey Flaherty, chief strategy officer, join host Bob Ambrogi to discuss the year that just ended and what it portends for the year ahead.    Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. Our guest today is Joe Borstein. Joe has been on the leading edge of change in the industry for many years, and today, he is the founder of LexFusion, a new collaborative venture among some of the biggest names in legal tech and outsourcing. LexFusion is born of Joe's experience as both a lawyer and entrepreneur, with a goal of accelerating the adoption of technology within corporate legal departments and law firms. They will accomplish this by transforming a lengthy—and sometimes brutal—sales cycle into one that's simpler and easier. Joe calls it “a one-stop shop for high-end legal innovation.” He's had a fascinating career path. The son of lawyers, Joe never doubted that he would follow the same path of his parents. He practiced law for six years before making the leap to Pangea3, a model for legal service delivery that was, at the time, extremely outside the norm for law firms. From the beginning, Joe posited that the growth of LPOs and ALSPs would not shrink the legal market, but grow it. Ten years later, we can't say he's wrong. In today's conversation, we talk about what it was like to put together and launch a business during the pandemic, building trust in a virtual environment, the changing mindset of the purchases of legal services, and how LexFusion chooses its member companies.

History is made by defining moments causing you to do something out of the norm. Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott, Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, Dr. Martin Luther King and his famous speech I have a dream, Gary Vaynerchuk and his work to impact people, Napoleon Hill and his books, and I could keep going. Each individual has incredible stories and they're legacy will be remember forever. Imagine if they didn't step out of line. Alex Borstein won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a comedy series back in September of 2019. During her acceptance speech she shared a powerful story about her grandmother surviving the holocaust. Borstein said, “They are immigrants, they are Holocaust survivors. My grandmother turned to a guard. She was in line to be shot into a pit. She said, “What happens if I step out of line?' And he (the guard) said, ‘I don't have the heart to shoot you but somebody will,' and she stepped out of line.” “And for that, I am here and my children are here. So step out of line, ladies, step out of line!” She added. Thank you for coming to this station of inspiration. In this era of quarantine it's time for some levity. Kevin Jacobsen and Amanda Spears return for this podcast, covering the Comedy categories and it's a bit of a Schitt fest. With so many contenders not in the race this year, like Veep, Barry and Russian Doll, everything is much more open than usual. Plus, how will the extended Emmy voting period and inability to host FYC events impact this year's awards? We cover Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Lead Actor, Lead Actress and Comedy Series where, in many races, looks like Schitt's Creek vs The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in nearly all but Lead Actor. Dan Levy vs Tony Shalhoub, Alex Borstein vs Annie Murphy and Catherine O'Hara vs Rachel Brosnahan. But what about Merritt Wever in Run? Is the final season of Modern Family rearing its ugly head? We close with an interesting conversation on the theory of 'vote-splitting,' which I generally don't believe is a real thing, or at least used correctly as a descriptor. But between Kevin, Amanda and myself - and using last year's Drama Directing race as an example - I think we land on a mutual understanding.  This podcast runs 1h 29 with music.
