Vicki Pepperdine is in some of our favourite comedies, so - of course - we leapt at the chance to have her on the podcast. Vicki chats to Hannah about playing Princess Anne in The Windsors, working with Julia Davis, their "filthy" podcast Dear Joan and Jericha, and why not enough people have watched Getting On. In Jenny Off the Blocks, Jen chats to Kelly Gordon, executive lead for Netball England's NETBALLHer campaign, about sport for life and the barriers women face when it comes to sports participation. In Rated or Dated, we overpluck our eyebrows and crack open a Grolsch, because we're watching 1998's Sliding Doors. And Mick's got some batfish news in the Bush Telegraph, where we're also trying to untie an artistic gordian knot.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. Joanna Scanlan is one of our great comic actors; she's best-known for “The Thick of It”, where she plays the obstructive civil servant Terri Coverley. But her range is much wider than comedy. She's extraordinarily moving in “After Love”, Aleem Khan's 2021 film about a widow who discovers her husband's secret life – a performance so powerful that it dominates the whole film, and won her BAFTA's lead actress award in 2022. Before that, she played Charles Dickens's long-suffering wife, Catherine, in “The Invisible Woman” – and appeared in “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and “Notes on a Scandal”, to name just a couple of her film roles. On television she's familiar from “The Larkins”, “No Offence” and “Puppy Love” – a series she co-wrote. She also co-wrote “Getting On”, a blackly comic portrayal of life on an NHS ward, which has become a great deal more topical in the fourteen years since it was first broadcast. Born in Merseyside, Joanna Scanlan grew up in North Wales; she went to Cambridge to study history and law, and only got her first job as an actress when she was thirty-four, after having a breakdown. She tells Michael about how that breakdown became a turning point, thanks to a doctor who told her that she would be ill all her life unless she acted. She remembers her schooldays in Wales, when she sang in a choir five times a day, and her early career working for the Arts Council, where the power-mad clock-watchers she worked with became the inspiration for the character of Terri Coverley. Talking About John Cassavetes' 1974 film ‘A Woman Under the Influence with our guest Tami ReikerIn this episode of Movies We Like, we're joined by award-winning cinematographer Tami Reiker to talk about one of her favorite movies, John Cassavetes' 1974 film A Woman Under the Influence. This is a film Tami has often shown to directors she's worked with as they discuss the projects that influence them and what they want to pull from it to bring in as influences on the project. It's a powerful film that's full of incredible moments brought by both leads – Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk – not to mention fascinating direction by Cassavetes himself. How has it influenced Tami over her career and what does she pull from it?Tami's Current Project Surface on Apple TV+We also talk about the new series she's worked on with director Sam Miller and star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Surface. For the episodes she worked on, Tami and Miller wanted to use swing shift lenses to amplify the disconnection Mbatha-Raw's character has from the world due to post-accident amnesia. It's a powerful tool and connects directly with their authorial voice. There's a lot to talk about with Tami about both A Woman Under the Influence and Surface on The Speakeasy. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel!About TamiAward-winning cinematographer Tami Reiker, ASC, made history by becoming the first woman to win an American Society of Cinematographers award. The drama already made history at the 2020 Venice Film Festival as the first film directed by a Black woman to be selected and is also an official selection at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.Previously, Reiker photographed the action epic The Old Guard for Netflix and frequent collaborator director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, the film follows a group of immortal soldiers who must defeat a corrupt man trying to expose their secret. The feature shattered records after its release, becoming one of the top ten most streamed films in Netflix's history, with Prince-Bythewood becoming the first Black female director to land a spot on the list.Reiker's additional feature credits include: Beyond the Lights for Gina Prince-Bythewood, starring Minnie Driver, Danny Glover and Gugu Mbatha-Raw; the critically praised Pieces of April for director Peter Hedges; and High Art, a visual collaboration with director Lisa Cholodenko, which earned Reiker a Best Cinematography nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards. For television, Reiker lensed: episode one of Woman of The Movement, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood; HBO Max's Delilah pilot for director James Griffiths; Marvel's Cloak and Dagger pilot; CBS's Charmed pilot, with director Brad Silberling; the pilot for Fox's Shots Fired, the critically praised ten-part series chronicling the investigation of a police shooting; and HBO's Getting On pilot for director Miguel Arteta. After beginning her career and making a name for herself in the New York film community, Reiker moved to Los Angeles where she still lives now, with her son. The actress and writer Joanna Scanlan known for her many roles in TV shows such as Getting On and The Thick of It, talks about her BAFTA nominated film After Love. Do we change our bodies because we want to or because we are being pressured to conform by society? Cambridge Professor of Political Philosophy Clare Chambers considers this question and concludes that the unmodified body is under attack, particularly for women, who are constantly given the message that their body is not good enough just as it is. Her new book is Intact – A Defence of the Unmodified Body. Margaret Atwood's latest collection of essays, Burning Questions, gathers together her essays and other occasional non-fiction pieces from 2004 to 2021. The literary legend talks culture wars, feminism and grief. Presenter: Andrea Catherwood Producer: Dianne McGregor

"There was urine flying through the air" - a new report out today in the Telegraph lays bare what it calls the ‘incontinence crisis' blighting elite women's sport. Anna Kessel, Women's Sport Editor at The Telegraph, joins Emma. The actress and writer Joanna Scanlan is known for her many roles in TV shows such as Getting On, No Offence and The Thick of It. We're back for another week with Laurie Metcalf, Niecy Nash and Alex Borstein navigating the trials and tribulations of senior care in Season 1 of "Getting On." We're focusing on episodes 3 and 4, which also feature guest stars Molly Shannon and NOT Jane Adams, as Colin keeps calling her, but Paula Pepperell, plus Ann Guilbert in some compromising positions and unfortunately no June Squibb. We're spending some extended time in the Billy Barnes Extended Care Ward with a trio of BSA's-and, at one point, more June Squibb than we know what to do with. We're spending the next few weeks discussing Season 1 of the US remake of "Getting On," two episodes at a time. We celebrate the under-celebrated Niecy Nash and look back fondly on her "Clean House" days, marvel in Laurie Metcalf's bottomless bag of acting choices and discuss the tragic underbelly of Alex Borstein's Nurse Dawn. Plus: the joy of watching nurses at work, grandma stories, a detailed discussion about how many donuts we could eat in one sitting, some investigative IMDb'ing about Mel Hernandez, an appearance from Ethel Beavers, and a look ahead at some exciting guest stars on the series. This week Joe and Suz discuss the hilariously versatile Niecy Nash and her work in Stolen By My Mother: The Kamiyah Mobley Story and Getting On.
Apparently, Mia only watches shows that no one else has seen (Getting On...anyone? It's fantastic). So she watched the two top rated comedies from last season Young Sheldon and Mom to see what all the fuss was about. They were the only comedies in the top 50, which is depressing. The whole list was basically football, football, football, crime, crime, crime, and The Voice.

From making a name as an 'in your face', stroppy, feminist, stand- up comedian to becoming a regular on the small screen, Jo Brand is a long established master of subverting expectations. Her TV credits include QI, 8 out of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You, and the black comedy, Damned. She was also the star and writer of Getting On, the BAFTA award wining series, set on a hospital geriatric ward. Similarly inspired by her time as a nurse is Jo Brand's novel and feature film The More You Ignore Me, starring Sheridan Smith as a Gina, a schizophrenic mum who is hospitalised after becoming obsessed with a local weatherman. It is in cinemas now.

There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.
Having to leave a child's bedside when they're being cared for in hospital can be a huge wrench. To help reduce the separation anxiety, a third of neonatal units in the UK are now using an app that helps parents stay in touch with their premature babies 24 hours a day. Doctors and nurses can send photos and video updates to parents when they can't be with their baby in hospital. So far, around five thousand families have used the service. Emma Barnett talks to Katharine Da Costa - a reporter for BBC South and Consultant Obstetrician Dr Maggie Blott. This year saw an unprecedented number of women winning major awards and prizes. What does being a winner feel like, and is it always good to win? Jenni Murray hears from the writer Edna O'Brien who won the David Cohen Prize for Literature. The award celebrates a writer who has broken down social and sexual barriers for women in Ireland and beyond, and moved mountains both politically and lyrically through her writing. Christmas is steeped in all sorts of tradition – but it’s not just trees, tinsel and turkey. Many families have their own festive rituals and the mere idea of doing things differently would make it feel… well, just not like Christmas. But why do we get so hung up on doing Christmas a certain way - even if it doesn't make us happy? What is it about human psychology that makes tradition so attractive? And if your family festivities make you want to run away and hide, what’s the best way to break the cycle? Jenni Murray talks to Dr Cristine Legare from the University of Texas at Austin about why rituals are an inevitable part of being human. We mark the centenary of women being able to enter the legal profession. Andrea Catherwood speaks to Cherie Booth QC, Dana Denis-Smith - founder of the First 100 years, Abi Silver, a former associate at a city law firm and now a legal consultant, Beth Collette, who's a barrister in her second year of tenancy, and Mari Takayanagi - a Senior Archivist at the Houses of Parliament. The actress and writer Joanna Scanlan is known for Thick of It, Getting On, No Offence Puppy Love and most recently The Accident. Her latest role is as Mother Superior in the BBC’s new adaptation of Dracula. She joins Jenni to discuss. Plus, the Glasgow-based close harmony quartet The All Sorts perform.
2019 has been another eventful year in Northern Ireland's second city, Londonderry. There was the shocking murder of the young journalist Lyra McKee, shot by dissident republicans and as a border city it's been at the heart of the Brexit debate. The Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont is still deadlocked over power-sharing. On a lighter note, it has also basked in the success of the second series of the hit Channel 4 TV comedy series, Derry Girls - the raucous misadventures of a group of teenagers growing up in the 90s. So what do 'real' Derry girls, from both communities, make of the past year in their city? Kathleen Carragher spoke to four Derry women who are contemporaries of TV’s Derry Girls - they were teenagers in the 90’s The actress and writer Joanna Scanlan is known for Thick of It, Getting On, No Offence Puppy Love and most recently The Accident. Her latest role is as Mother Superior in the BBC’s new adaptation of Dracula. She joins Jenni to discuss. Jenni speaks to Molly Case, a clinical nurse specialist for inherited cardiac conditions at St George’s in London, and author, Christie Watson who was a nurse for 20 years until quite recently. Vicki Pepperdine - star of ‘Getting On’ and podcast ‘Dear Joan and Jericha’ - plays the fairground doll Aunt Sally. But this is a very different character from the rosy-cheeked femme fatale made famous by Una Stubbs. How has the story been updated for the modern day? What’s it like to spend hours having your head wrapped in latex? And what’s the attraction to playing female roles that defy expectation? For the first time, five major beauty pageants - Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss America, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA - have been won by black women. People around the world have seen this as a milestone in representation. But are beauty pageants still relevant and necessary in 2019? And can these competitions be feminist? Salma Haidrani is a journalist who documented her experiences as a contestant in Miss England’s 2018 heats. Tanya Gold is a journalist at the Guardian. Leanne Levers is a political scientist. Police forces across the country have found that the number of crimes involving children attacking their parents has doubled in the last three years from 7,000 to 14,000. The figures have been uncovered by BBC Yorkshire after they made a Freedom of Information request. They were invited to attend a course in Doncaster called Getting On. It’s one of a handful of similar schemes around the country which aim to help parents and children find a solution to this type of abuse. Jenni speaks to Emma Glasbey, BBC Yorkshire’s home affairs correspondent.
We remember the woman considered the greatest American writer of the twentieth century – the Nobel Prize winner, Toni Morrison, who died on Monday. The number of crimes being reported to the police involving children attacking their parents has doubled in the last three years from around 7,000 to 14,000 incidents. That’s according to data obtained by BBC Yorkshire following Freedom of Information requests. The BBC has been given exclusive access to the ‘Getting On’ course in Doncaster. It’s one of just a handful of similar courses across the country, designed to help parents and children find a solution to this type of abuse. Former Blue Peter presenter, actress and author Janet Ellis joins Jenni to discuss her new novel 'How It Was', the follow-up to her acclaimed debut, The Butcher’s Hook. It looks at the generational divides between mothers and daughters, and deals with difficult topics such as parental bereavement, miscarriage and inappropriate underage relationships. Scottish songwriter and musician, Karine Polwart is known for her politically charged folk songs. In her new album she gives a folk twist to the Scottish pop hits of her childhood and plays her interpretation of Deacon Blue’s ‘Dignity’ live in the studio. Niecy Nash first hit it big as a comedic actress on shows like "Reno 911." But the short-lived HBO series "Getting On," which mixed comedy with plenty of drama, gave Nash a chance to show off another side of her acting skills. Based on a British series of the same name, "Getting On" earned Nash two Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. We talk with Nash about her two Emmy contenders -- the Netflix limited series "When They See Us" and her TNT series "Claws" -- and began by talking about her favorite episode of TV ever, the first episode of "Getting On."

Niecy Nash loves Backstage, and the feeling is mutual. With her background in theater and her years of pounding the pavement to carve a place for herself in Hollywood, the multi-hyphenate talent has all the audition advice an aspiring actor could ever need. Known for her hilarity on “Reno 911!” and “Scream Queens,” her Emmy-winning hosting gig on “Clean House,” and her quietly dramatic, Emmy-nominated tour de force on “Getting On,” Niecy now plays the leading role of Desna Simms in TNT’s fabulous crime dramedy “Claws,” which recently began its second season. For over 50 years, Backstage has been the most trusted place for actors to find jobs and career advice, and for casting professionals to find the right performers for their projects. “In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast” features intimate, inspirational interviews with some of the most exciting actors and awards contenders working today. Your 20s can be hard—but getting advice from people who've been there can make things a little easier. And that's exactly what we're doing this week, in a live show we recently recorded at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. With the help of guests Alia Shawkat (Search Party, Arrested Development, Transparent), Niecy Nash (Claws, Reno 911, Getting On), and Terri Coleman (from our series "In New Orleans"), we take on life advice questions from listeners in their 20s, and talk about the most challenging and exciting parts of young adulthood. (Mindy Tucker) One listener named Sumaya asks how to handle tough conversations about money with friends who, all of a sudden, are making more than she is. Mia wants to know about how to make friends in a new city, without the help of a social life centered around school. And a listener who wants to be known as "Rebecca" asks about how to figure out exactly what she and her partner like in the bedroom. We also talk with Alia Shawkat and Niecy Nash about their 20s. Niecy was married with three kids by the time her 20s were over. Alia's still in her 20s, and talks about what it was like to get famous young on Arrested Development, and how her view of relationships and money has shifted during this decade of her life. Plus, Terri Coleman tells a story, accompanied by drummer Bianca Richardson, about an important lesson she learned in her 20s from an unlikely mentor—Jose Cuervo.
CAST AND CREW Director Jennifer Arnold (HBO’s A Small Act), Writer Chuck Hayward (Dear White People), Actress Anabelle Acosta (Quantico), Actor Steven Thomas Capp (How I Met Your Mother), Actor Brian Borello (Dark Desire), newcomers Michael Cienfuegos and Luke Clark, Executive Producer Valerie Stadler, Composer Siddhartha Khosla (This Is Us) and Choreographer Alison Faulk (Magic Mike) ABOUT FAT CAMP Twenty-something Hutch thinks image is everything. He fronts like a baller and is too spoiled to get a job. But when his mom kicks him out of the house and he’s forced to work at his uncle’s fat camp, he finds himself supervising an offbeat group of husky boys, who ultimately help him grow up. Chuck Hayward's (Netflix’s new series Dear White People) irreverent script is all about embracing your inner loser as the ultimate winner, making Emmy-nominated Jennifer Arnold's fiction feature directorial debut a willfully offensive adult comedy with no manners and tons of heart. Acclaimed comic and actor Chris Redd (Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping, Netflix’s Disjointed) gives a star turn as Hutch, supported by Anabelle Acosta (Quantico, Ballers), newcomer Michael Cienfuegos, Mel Rodriguez (Last Man On Earth, Getting On), and Vivica A. Fox (Empire, Kill Bill: Volumes 1 and 2). Runtime: 88 min Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pg/FatCampMovie/likes/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/fatcampmovie
Guy, Wynter, and Karen are once again joined by film critic Dave White to talk about medical dramas! How accurate was Doogie Howser? How is the Nurse's Ball on General Hospital a real thing? Was Scrubs secretly genius? Plus, Dave tells us why Getting On was such an important show in his life, Guy tries to defend DNCE again, Wynter is semi-confident she can become a doctor, and Karen reminds us why ER was worth watching even in the later seasons. With Guy Branum, Wynter Mitchell, Karen Tongson, and guest Dave White. Each week we'll add everyone's jams to this handy Spotify playlist. You may know Alex from her run on MAD TV where she played Ms. Swan among other characters, or as Lois Griffin, the matriarch on "Family Guy", or as Dawn on the hit HBO series, "Getting On", but today you'll know her as a loving and ridiculously funny Mom to two beautiful children. And yes, the show is called Father Time, but when you have a chance to chat with one of today's best comedic actresses, you take it. Plus, sometimes it is necessary to be reminded just how stupid we dads are. And trust me, Alex definitely does that. My huge thanks to her for coming on the show and I know you'll enjoy her candid take on parenthood.

Welcome, welcome, welcome – to Succotash Clips, Epi101, the first episode of Season 2! As previously announced, my plan for Season 2 is to split our usual Succotash offerings – Clips and Chats – into separate shows. And that’s what you have here in the first show of Season 2. Succotash Clips. All clips. No interviews. My goal is to have these shows come in at about or under an hour. And they should be a little easier to produce as well. Our Associate Producer, Tyson Saner, grabbed up a bunch of comedy podcasts clips. I’ve pulled a few. And so let me give you the rundown of the podcasts we’re sampling this time out: 80’s Reboot Overdrive, Comedy On Vinyl, Getting On, Hello Internet, The Kundalini Files, That Would Be Me and The Big Cat Show. In addition, we’ve got not one but TWO of our Burst O’ Durst segments this show, a classic Henderson’s Pants commercial, and the Tweetsack. IN REVIEW Now that the holiday break is over, I’m back posting podcast reviews. This past week, for This Week In Comedy Podcasts on Splitsider.com and Huffington Post Entertainment, I took a listen to a couple of very funny episodes of The New Hollywood Podcast with Brian Flaherty. On Monday he had a short 15 minute installment with schlocky 70’s film producer Alan Marlowe, followed on Wednesday featuring an interview with Alan McKay, Will Ferrell’s comedic partner in crime. The joke is that Marlowe is a character that McKay started riffing during his interview with Brian, so they went with it and made it a self-contained bit, which Brian then posted as a special episode. Check that out if you can – just follow the links above. (By the way, I also mentioned the Casa Mirth podcast with Dr. Norman Trousers and River Zambezi, and I also pinged the OnBrand podcast, which isn’t a comedy podcast but it’s about branding, which is my main day job, and host Nick Westergaard had my friend Pat Hanlon on as a guest so there.) Oh, and if you didn’t get a chance to catch the Casa Mirth Christmas Spectacular, you should, if only to hear my stirring introduction. THE JOB INTERVIEW Maybe it's because I just started a new job at the beginning of the year, but I found the video sketch The Job Interview, by our friend John Dredge (host of The John Dredge Nothing To Do With Anything Show podcast) to be pretty clever. THE CLIPS Getting On with James UrbaniakIf you’re a podcast aficionado, chances are that you’ve heard James Urbaniak appearing as a guest on any number of shows out there, including The Thrilling Adventure Hour and Comedy Bang Bang. He’s a very talented vocal artist as well as and actor and a comedian. And he’s had his own podcast for a while. He doesn’t release them regularly – in fact, since 2012, there seem to only be about 21 episodes out there. Each one features him “navigating the darkly comedic recesses of his troubled yet charming mind,” according to his homesite. 80’s Reboot OverdriveOur Associate Producer Tyson Saner stumbled headfirst into something called the Southgate Media Group. It’s a network of podcasts that got going about a year and a half ago, the brainchild of Rob and Martha Southgate. Almost every show on their lineup – and I counted 24 of them – is dedicated to a TV show. There’s also a show about video games and one potpourri crazy roundup of a show called 80’s Reboot Overdrive. That’s where this clip comes from, and it features host Dave talking to Southgate Media’s heads Rob and Martha Southgate, along with their 7-year-old daughter Molly, who co-hosts THREE of the podcasts with her parents. The Big Cat ShowWe haven’t heard from our old pal Lyonheart for a really long time. He had an internet radio show a couple of years ago, then he shut it down and headed out West for a bit, landing in San Jose to take care of some family stuff. But the West Coast didn’t suit him and he went back East once again, to New York this time with his buddy Matt. Hello InternetTyson tossed us a clip this week from Hello Internet, a show I’m not familiar with. It features hosts CGP Grey and Brady Haran. I’m not sure what’s up with the three initials – the CGP Grey thing – but according to their homesite, the two guys kick around YouTube, life, work, and whatever. Grey’s got several videos on YuTube under the title “Grey Explains” and there’s one on the Lord of The Rings, robots, and other interesting subjects. The Kundalini Files ReduxFriends-of-Succotash Davian Dent and Jason McNamara (also known as Jabs from The Dhead Factor podcast), had done a 6-part detective spoof podcast called The Kundalini Files a couple of years ago. Davian has re-cut and re-mastered those shows and put them altogether into something he calls a feature-length show he calls The Kundalini Files Redux. Comedy On VinylI’m going to assume that, if you’re a listener to Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, that you’re a fan of both comedy and podcasts. That combo probably can’t get much better than on a show called Comedy On Vinyl. Normally the comedy nerds on the show, headed up by host Jason Klamm, talk about the greatest comedy vinyl albums of all time. Our associate producer Tyson Saner found an intriguing break from that format with their epi119, featuring guest Jimmy Pardo, host of the Never Not Funny podcast, who brought the chat around to the effect that Richard Lewis’ 1985 TV special “I’m In Pain” had on him. That Would Be MeAuthor Geoff Hoff does a lot of self-help books on writing and other topics, including an e-course on how to start your own podcast. He recently started doing a humor podcast himself, called That Would Be Me. Refreshingly, these are pretty short installments, and the subjects are presented in an observational style, which is a nice break from the glut of pop culture casts that seem to be propagating faster than ever. That's the lineup and the skinny for the first show of Succotash, Season 2. Drop me a line at marc@SuccotashShow.com and let me know what you thought of our first Succotash Clips show. Next we’ll have a Succotash Chats edition, so you can compare the two flavors of Succotash. One way you can help us out as we move into Season 2 is to get up to iTunes so you can rate and review us. You’d be amazed what a couple of sentences and 5 stars can do for our rankings. Neither of which costs you a dime. To help us out in a more material way, there’s the Donate button up at http://SuccotashShow.com and we also have t-shirts, mugs and other merch with our brand new Succotash logo up now at the Succotashery. Thanks for listening and be sure to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

Peter Carey's latest novel, Amnesia follows a disgraced Australian journalist hired to write the life story of a hacker activist who has raised the hackles of international governments because she wrote the code that unlocks prisons around the world. Carey is has twice won The Booker Prize, is this another winning work? DV8 Physical Theatre Company's new show "John" tells the tale of a man who grows up in an extremely abusive family and who- as an adult - finds comfort and company in gay saunas. There's a lot of vivid descriptions of what goes on - how will the audience at London's Lyttleton respond to such explicit depiction of gay sex? Christopher Nolan's new film Interstellar stars Matthew McConaughey as a former NASA astronaut whose job is to save the human race from extinction...not an simple subject, even for such an accomplished director. The Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace has an exhibition called Gold, which displays some of Her Majesty's astonishing artefacts around that theme. Is it a dazzling success? Puppy Love is the latest project from Joanna Scanlan and Vicky Pepperdine (who made the award- winning Getting On comedy series set in a hospital geriatric ward). This deals with the world of canine training; is it a bit of dog's breakfast? Tom Sutcliffe is joined by Giles Fraser, Susie Boyt and Antonia Quirke. The producer is Oliver Jones.

We're Getting On (Monster Meanman) Author and filmmaker James Kaelan returns to Skylight Books to celebrate the re-release of his novella We're Getting On and, immediately following this event, the premiere of his documentary of the same name at the United Film Festival. In July 2010, Skylight hosted the launch party for the original editon of We're Getting On, a limited-edition novella with a seed-embedded cover. The event was also the kick-off of the author's book tour -- entirely by bicycle -- which took him more than 1,000 miles from Los Angeles to Seattle, and which the documentary chronicles.
