Though just 21, Chris Deuto has already amassed an impressive lifetime of climbing since first starting the sport at age 7. Having ticked 5.14c and V14 and done national-level competitions, Chris has shifted his focus to more alpine-centered climbs, from Aconcagua to Fitz Roy. Most recently, he made the first free rope-solo winter ascent of the Diamond face of Long's Peak in his home state of Colorado. Chris has consciously brought his process-centered approach to the forefront of his climbing, seeking richer experiences rather than just focusing on grades. But first, your second favorite conspiracy-addled climbing podcasters discuss the curious appearance of "bolts" (big scare quotes) beneath a petroglyph in northeastern Utah. Where did these so-called "bolts" come from, and why, exactly, are climbers to blame? The mystery deepens... Last but never least, our final bit features the return of a Bend-based musical duo Billy and Box Kid, with their new track, Without the Frills. What we've all been missing is - support. After months of talking with so many of you about how YOU feel in raising your neurodiverse child, it's clear that you're not getting the support you need - the comradery, the solidarity, the understanding without judgement. Until I met you guys, neither was I.In this bonus mini episode, I'm giving you guys an inside look into my brain. I feel there's an open space for mothers like us to come together - and I have an idea.
The ladies end season 1 with a requested episode, about homeschooling a child with special needs. We hope this is an encouragement to all mamas to love and embrace their child's unique qualities; but this is an extra tight hug to those with a differently wired kid.

We were not designed to be perfect; we were designed to be uniquely us. Today’s guests, authors Sally Clarkson and her son Nathan, and writer Hayley Morgan share their stories of struggling to accept their differences and imperfections. Though Nathan was discouraged because he didn’t fit into society’s mold, and Hayley feared she wasn’t perfect enough, God revealed His purpose for their lives and has helped them utilize their gifts in ways they never knew possible. Their stories remind us even if we can’t see it, God has a bigger plan ahead for each one of us, and He can use our differences to do all kinds of good. Today on the podcast I'm talking with Nathan Clarkson, who is an actor, best-selling author, filmmaker, mental illness struggler, and real-life friend of mine. He is also the son of Sally Clarkson, is not only a friend and mentor of mine, but we co-wrote the book, Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe. I asked Nathan to come on the show because I love how willing he is to talk about his mental illnesses, which include depression, anxiety, OCD, ODD, ADHD, and other learning disabilities, which he shares in-depth about in his memoir, Different. Today we're going to talk about how he has seen God in his “differences”, but we're also going to talk about something that Nathan has been thinking a lot about lately, something in fact that he's currently writing a book on, and that is the struggle that many men have with acknowledging and facing their failures, frailty, and brokenness. Before we get into our conversation, here's just a little bit more about Nathan: He has appeared in national commercials, TV-shows, and major feature films. He starred in the hit faith-based feature-film Confessions of a Prodigal Son which he also wrote and produced, in conjunction with his production company Lighting Dark. Nathan lives in New York City but can often be found in Los Angeles, Colorado Springs, or adventuring around the country and world speaking and sharing his passion for helping people better know their Creator and the story He has for them to tell. Nathan Clarkson grew up as an out-of-the-box kid living with ADHD, mental illness, and (thankfully) a very loving mother, Sally. The two have recently published their story in the book Different, which details how stories helped to shape Nathan, and how his mom came to decide that what other people thought about their parenting and educational approach was irrelevant. In this episode, you'll hear: how books shaped Nathan's out-of-the-box childhoodwhy Sally and Nathan are so grateful for the time they spent reading togetherhow stories can help during dark times Whether you are parenting an out-of-the-box child or not, this episode reminds us to embrace our children, just they way they are, and inspires us to use books to help them along the way. Author Sally Clarkson shares her journey with her outside-the-box son Nathan, and how God is able to do miracles we can't even imagine when we trust His voice instead of the loud voices of the world. From his early childhood, Sally Clarkson's son Nathan was bursting with creativity and uncontainable energy, struggling not only with learning issues but also with anxiety and OCD. He saw the world through his own unique lens―one that often caused him to be labeled as “bad,” “troubled,” or someone in need of “fixing.” Sally dared to believe that Nathan's differences could be part of an intentional design from a loving Creator with a plan for his life. She trusted that the things that made him different were the very things that could make him great. “It's so hard because you don't know what's going to happen next when you child falls apart or screams or acts out or argues every night at the dinner table,” Clarkson said. “I was relentlessly committed to understanding scripturally that this is the place where God wanted to bring redemption and light and beauty.” In This Episode You'll Hear... Encouragement, insights and practical advice for your own journey with an outside-the-box child How training, affirmation and God's perspective can turn your children's weaknesses into their own unique superhero strengths Why we need to practice mercy and kindness in our parenting. Sally's LAUNCH Acronym for Nathan: L- Love him with the love of God. A- Affirming him daily and believing in who he would become.U- Understanding his limitations and learning to be patient with his disabilitiesN- Never passing on guilt to him for being limited. “God didn't give me a child so I could tell Him exactly my expectations of how that child should be. You have to say ‘God show me how to love the child you gave me and how to release him within his limitations and personalities into their world as a healthy human being.'” -Sally Clarkson. You've heard Sally come on the podcast and share how to own your life (Ep 54) and how to create a life-giving home (Ep 107). Today she's back on the show with her adult son, Nathan Clarkson. This time we're talking about learning to love our kids' outside-the-box differences. Trusting mom intuition and believing God uniquely designed each of our kids for a purpose. Sally and Nathan share stories from his childhood. And offer helpful tips for casting vision over your children. I found Sally's thoughts on holding ideals but letting go of expectations very helpful. “Give up expectations. But lead family to ideals. Don't give up on ideals. They are shaping the core of your children's values.” Thankfully Sally and Nathan have written a much-needed resource on this topic, “Different: The Story of an Outside-the-Box Kid and the Mom Who Loved Him.” ** What we chat about: When you start to notice your child is different (Sally) When the child begins to notice he/she may be different (Nathan) When you want to sympathize & parent inner needs but told to discipline external behavior. Creating a space allowing your child to be themselves and belong. How Jesus treated people differently with the same love. How to cast vision over your children. How to turn differences into superpowers. Creating rhythms in your home. Holding ideals while letting go of expectations. How differences impact family dynamics. Orchestrating breaks for moms of children with differences. Things that helped Nathan as a teenager who knew he was different.
