The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court for access to Social Security information on millions of Americans. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports.
Federal agencies must now allow any officials designated by the president or agency leadership to have complete access to unclassified records, data, software systems and IT systems, President Donald Trump declared in an executive order late Thursday night. Trump's directive aims to stop waste, fraud and abuse by eliminating information silos, requiring agency heads to “ensure Federal officials designated by the President or Agency Heads (or their designees) have full and prompt access to all unclassified agency records, data, software systems, and information technology systems — or their equivalents if providing access to an equivalent dataset does not delay access — for purposes of pursuing Administration priorities related to the identification and elimination of waste, fraud, and abuse.” “This includes authorizing and facilitating both the intra- and inter-agency sharing and consolidation of unclassified agency records,” the executive order states. A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order last Thursday blocking Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency from further access to any Social Security Administration systems that contain personally identifiable information. Judge Ellen Hollander of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland also ordered that all DOGE team members associated with the organization's work at SSA, including Elon Musk and U.S. DOGE Service leader Amy Gleason, must disgorge and delete all non-anonymized personal information they obtained from the agency's systems. The decision is an initial victory in the case where Democracy Forward led a group of unions and an advocacy organization in suing the Social Security Administration and its acting Commissioner Leland Dudek for giving DOGE access to “some of the nation's most sensitive data, including the financial data, employment information, medical data, and personal addresses of millions of Americans,” according to the initial complaint. Lessons from previous school shootings helped save lives in Georgia last week. ABC's Jim Ryan tells us more.
Security systems are increasingly vulnerable to a variety of threats, as discussed in the podcast episode. Issues such as DNS tunneling, Wi-Fi vulnerabilities like the SSID Confusion attack, and weaknesses in voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant highlight the critical need for robust security measures. DNS tunneling, as seen in campaigns like TrickCDN and SexShow, allows threat actors to encode data in DNS queries, evade network firewalls, and execute command-and-control operations. To address this risk, organizations are advised to deploy DNS monitoring and analysis tools to detect unusual traffic patterns and restrict DNS resolvers. Similarly, the SSID Confusion attack exploits a flaw in the IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi standard, deceiving users into connecting to insecure networks and enabling attackers to intercept network traffic. Proposed solutions include updating the Wi-Fi standard to include the SSID in the four-way handshake and enhancing beacon protection. The podcast episode emphasized the increasingly complex role of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) due to various factors. One key challenge is the mounting legal pressure on CISOs, particularly with the rise in ransomware attacks. CISOs often bear responsibility for cybersecurity incidents, despite potential limitations in organizational authority and reporting structures that may hinder their ability to enact necessary security changes effectively. You install them at your home to keep you safe, but did you know that many smart home devices come with built-in vulnerabilities that hackers regularly exploit to watch you come and go from your home? A recent Consumer Reports study found that video doorbells with two brand names, Eken and Tuck, were vulnerable to being hacked. In tests, a Consumer Reports security specialist was able to log onto the cameras from the other side of the country, then download images that showed the user's deck and backyard. The researchers found at least 10 other similar products sold under different names – but all of them used the same app and turned out to be rebranded versions of the same insecure product. Don't get caught out: before buying connected devices for your home, check product reviews and look for reports of known weaknesses. The caution you use today could save you heartache tomorrow. The FSMA Produce Safety Rule does not give specifics on establishing no-harvest buffer zones, and it can be difficult for growers to determine the size of a no-harvest buffer zone when they find poop in the field. Laurel Dunn, assistant professor and food safety extension specialist at the University of Georgia, and Shirley Micallef, professor in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture & Center for Food Safety and Security Systems at the University of Maryland, have conducted research on the dispersal of contamination due to rain splash on feces in produce fields. In this episode, Phil Tocco, extension educator for on-farm produce safety at Michigan State University Extension, talks with Laurel and Shirley to find out what they learned from their research, and what growers can take away from their findings. The Department of Justice works with highly sensitive sets of information and because of that, the bar to secure it is much higher than other civilian agencies. As CIO, Melinda Rogers is highly focused on delivering a zero-trust security architecture across the department to better secure its national security systems and the information within them. Rogers recently spoke with my colleague Wyatt Kash at the Zero Trust Security Summit about that journey and how the DOJ is thinking about modernizing its cybersecurity. Let's tune into that now.
Today, we have Joe from Vivint in the studio, discussing current security system trends and national concerns.

Human identity recognition is one of the key mechanisms of ensuring proper asset and information access to individuals. It became an established authentication practice for government, consumer, financial and recreational institutions in modern society. Biometrics are also increasingly used in a cybersecurity context to mitigate vulnerabilities and to ensure protection against an unauthorized access. However, with the rise of the technological advancements, such as AI and deep learning, more and more capabilities exist to infer private information of individuals and to use aggregate data mining for commercial or other purposes. This lecture will discuss how deep learning methods can enhance biometric recognition accuracy in a variety of settings: unimodal and multi-modal systems, social behavioral biometrics, and risk assessment. The lecture will further focus on risks of privacy and ethical considerations, with discussing cancellability and de-identification as two of the mechanisms to mitigate the privacy concerns. About the speaker: Prof. Gavrilova holds Full Professor with Tenure appointment at the Department of Computer Science, University of Calgary, Canada. Prof. Gavrilova research interests lie in the areas of machine intelligence, biometric recognition, image processing and GIS. Prof. Gavrilova publication list includes over 150 journal and conference papers, edited special issues, books and book chapters, including World Scientific Bestseller of the Month (2007) – "Image Pattern Recognition: Synthesis and Analysis in Biometric," Springer book (2009) "Computational Intelligence: A Geometry-Based Approach" and IGI book (2013) "Multimodal Biometrics and Intelligent Image Processing for Security Systems". She has received support from CFI, NSERC, GEOIDE, MITACS, PIMS, Alberta Ingenuity, NATO and other funding agencies. She is an Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Computational Sciences Springer Verlag Journal series and on Editorial board of seven journals.

Federal cybersecurity spending is getting a big boost in fiscal year 2023, including a $230 million budget increase for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's cyber programs. This comes as a new report from FedScoop shows about half of respondents have faced network or system outages or a network or data breach at their agency. Norman St. Laurent, federal public sector marketing manager at Cisco, explains the right steps agencies are taking to reduce these outages. This interview is underwritten by Cisco. The Government Accountability Office has made over 350 public recommendations for securing federal IT systems and America's critical infrastructure since 2010. GAO says more than half of those recommendations have not been implemented as of December 2022. Marisol Cruz Cain, director for information technology and cybersecurity at the Government Accountability Officer, discusses how government can execute a more comprehensive cybersecurity strategy. The recent shift to cloud computing has become a major asset for government agencies, proven to be cost-effective, increase workflow flexibility and reduce strain on IT departments. However, as more data and operations move from data centers to the cloud, there are also inherent security risks. Now more than ever, agencies must deploy tools and technologies built to enable trustless architecture o protect mission-critical assets. In this episode of the Future of Federal Data Strategy podcast series, host Camille Tutti speaks with chief technology advisor for public sector cybersecurity at World Wide Technology, Paul Cunningham and Marisol Cruz Cain, director of information technology and cybersecurity at the Government Accountability Office to discuss security obstacles agencies face with cloud and how they can stand up the architecture needed to inject trustless security models into operations.
