On July 1, 2005, Luther Vandross — the velvet-voiced singer who defined romance for a generation — passed away at the age of 54, just two years after suffering a devastating stroke. With his flawless vocals and heartfelt lyrics, Vandross became one of R&B's most celebrated artists, delivering timeless hits like Never Too Much, Here and Now, and Dance with My Father. His ability to blend soul, passion, and elegance made him a legend whose influence stretched far beyond music. Hosted by: Jason Beckerman & Derek Kaufman Learn more about your ad choices. It's a random Arthouse Tuesday here at Breakfast All Day, with reviews of two extremely different films. First, we discuss the documentary "Luther: Never Too Much," about the late, legendary R&B singer Luther Vandross. Director Dawn Porter's film is an appreciative exploration of Vandross' talent, work ethic and attention to detail. Whether you're a huge fan or you don't know much about him, you'll find this entertaining. In theaters this weekend, streaming on OWN starting Feb. 7 and Max starting Feb. 8. Then, we catch up with "The Girl With the Needle," the exquisitely beautiful and harrowing Danish film that's up for the best international feature Oscar. Director and co-writer Magnus von Horn tells the story of a young pregnant woman (Van Carmen Sonne) who seeks help from a charismatic shopkeeper (Trine Dyrholm) in 1919 Copenhagen. Shot in high-contrast black and white, it's gorgeous but grim. It was also on Christy's top-10 list for 2024. In theaters now and streaming on Mubi. Thanks for being here. Come on back Friday for reviews of "Companion" and "You're Cordially Invited." Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

The wonderful Carlos Alomar returns to discuss the new Luther Vandross documentary, Luther: Never Too Much. Carlos and his wife Robin Clark have been friends with Luther since high school and that friendship extends from their first group together, Listen Up Brother, to them all being introduced to David Bowie for the Young Americans album and beyond. The film shows his launch as one of the greatest male r&b vocalists in history, his many talents as a writer and arranger, his battles with weight, his untimely death, and his complicated personal life. You only have to hear Luther's voice to recognize he's one of the best there's ever been. This incredible film allows us to get to know the man who was as beautiful as his voice and Carlos fleshes it all out for us.

On today's episode, Andrew shares his views on the ways AI could take on more complex projects while using fewer resources. They say hip-hop never sleeps, and neither do we when it comes to dissecting the latest in rap culture. Buckle up as we, your favorite duo AC Lee, and Parlay Pete, tackle the enigmatic Diddy's latest Instagram escapades and the shady stories that never seem too far behind him. Illuminating the dark corners of the industry, we discuss the tragic losses and the beefs that have become as much a part of rap lore as the beats themselves. And just when you think we've dug deep, we pivot to the competitive nature of rap battles and sports rivalries, with a personal tale of basketball bravado that still stings.Relationships aren't left on the sidelines either, as we call out the so-called experts peddling one-size-fits-all love advice. Our candid conversation reveals the lessons we've learned about love, family, and the uncharted waters of personal growth. From the nuances of navigating different life perspectives to embracing diverse tastes (avocados, anyone?), we celebrate the evolving journey of our personal and cultural experiences. It's all about learning from each other, whether it's your five-year-old or the stranger serving you sushi in Japan. Finally, it's a trip down memory lane with WrestleMania nostalgia hitting us harder than a chair to the back. But it's not all about the suplexes and body slams; we also catch up on life's little moments, from travel plans to the bond that keeps our conversations as lively as the latest main event. So pull up a chair, pour yourself something good, and join us for a rollercoaster ride through the worlds of rap, relationships, and everything in between.Support the show
