“Pornography is like a silent epidemic ... but nobody wants to talk about it much,” says child protection advocate Kristen Jenson. She's the author of the “Good Pictures Bad Pictures” series of read-aloud books that teach children how to recognize and reject pornography. In America, kids are encountering porn at younger and younger ages—often without their parents knowing, Jenson says. Once a child has a smartphone, it is only a matter of time until the child is exposed to porn—often by other children. And it's having a devastating impact on their impressionable young minds, Jenson says.“Every school bus in America is a triple X theater because children are showing pornography to other children in buses. I've heard so many stories of five-year-olds getting shown hardcore pornography on a school bus,” she says.Retroactive studies found that the average age kids first view pornography is around 11 years old, but Jenson concluded from her work and research that the average age is much lower. In our in-depth interview, she walks me through many aspects of porn consumption and how children are impacted by it: How does porn affect children's overall development and their chances of meaningful sexual relationships later on in life? How does porn affect children's mental health? How does it affect their sexual health? Do children get addicted to porn? How are girls impacted by porn? How do sexual predators use porn as a grooming tool for kids?Violent porn, in particular, is a huge problem in itself, Jenson said. By the age of 18, the vast majority of teenagers—about 80 percent—have been exposed to violent porn: “That's the main fare out there. It's violent porn. It's hitting, it's slapping, hair-pulling, strangling.”Many children's perception of sex is poisoned by violent pornography. She told me a story of a girl who was kissed by her 12-year-old boyfriend for the first time: “And he strangled her because that's what he'd seen in porn.”It is perhaps unsurprising then that there has been a steep increase in what is called child-on-child sexual abuse over the last decade. In fact, about 70 percent of all sexual child abuse cases are now child-on-child, she said: “Kids love to imitate. When you add in the factor of pornography ... it is not surprising that some of these children want to go ahead and act out what they see in pornography,” Jenson says.So what should parents do to protect their children?Simply telling your children that porn is bad is not good enough, she said. Children need to be given three basic things: a vocabulary to talk about pornography, a warning against it, and a plan of what to do when they are exposed to it.To help parents in this endeavor, she wrote her book series “Good Pictures, Bad Pictures.” These books, geared to different age groups, are meant as a tool to help parents with such conversations: “The point is to model parents talking to their children. It's really important to open that conversation.”“One of the most loving things that you can do for your child is to give them a defense against not only pornography, but all forms of sexual exploitation,” she says.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
Kristen Jensen, founder of Defend Young Minds and author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, talks with Sissy and David about why parents need to start conversations about pornography early—ideally as soon as kids have access to screens. She explains how porn often finds kids through friends' devices, social media, apps, and even AI, and why proactive, calm conversations help build an “internal filter” that tech safeguards alone can't provide. Kristen also addresses the link between pornography, addiction, and rising child-on-child harmful behavior, and offers practical steps for parents if exposure happens: stay calm, make a plan, keep talking, and remember that porn is the problem—not your child. In this timely and practical conversation, Jamie sits down with Kristen Jenson, founder of Defend Young Minds and author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, to talk about how parents and grandparents can protect kids from pornography in 2026 and beyond. Kristen shares why kids are being exposed earlier than most parents realize (sometimes as young as age three!) and how her books are designed to give families simple, age-appropriate language to help kids reject porn when they encounter it. We discuss the growing dangers of social media, shared-server games like Roblox and Fortnite, Discord, and how AI is fueling porn and exploitation. Kristen also shares tangible next steps parents can take today, including how to talk to kids about red-flag behavior, why using proper anatomical language matters, and how girls are often exposed differently than boys. Kristen Jenson at defendyoungminds.com wrote an article entitled, Today's Porn Industry: Five Things Every Parent Needs to Know. Parents, as you engage in continued conversations with your kids about the dangers and sinful nature of this horribly broken and addicting expression of God's good gift of sexuality, keep in mind these warnings from Jenson. First, the porn industry is complicit with the sex trafficking of minors, rape, and pedophilia. Porn has become synonymous with sex crimes. Second, the pornography industry makes hard-core pornography available for free. If it doesn't find your kids, your kids will find it. Third, pornography normalizes incest, racism, and violence to women. Fourth, the porn industry is a mainstream big corporate business. Yes, computer scientists, lawyers accountants, and HR execs are all a part of the scheme. And finally, the porn industry is doing all they can to deny the truth, to disinform, and to defame their critics. Parents, protect your kids from pornography.

Pornography is more accessible than ever. Given the recent statistics showing that 1 in 10 children have watched pornography by the time they are nine years old, this is raising legitimate concerns for parents and mental health professionals. How does this explicit material impact young minds – and what can we do to mitigate the effects? Get the show notes here: https://lauriechristine.com/how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-pornography/Pornography. It's not a fun topic to discuss, but it's a very important conversation to have with our boys. (And not just an isolated discussion, but an ongoing conversation!)The average age that kids are exposed to pornography is between the ages of 8-10. It's literally everywhere. Especially when younger and younger kids have unlimited access to cell phones, ipads, and other devices. Even if you've been super careful to limit your child's internet access, chances are they have a friend at school, on the bus, in the neighborhood and yes, even at church, who might expose them to pornography. Pornography is a world-wide pandemic that has been normalized by our society. I don't think many Christians truly realize the danger of pornography. This is a quote that I found from an article on NPR that I think describes this pandemic very well: “Imagine a drug so powerful it can destroy a family simply by distorting a man's perception of his wife. Picture an addiction so lethal it has the potential to render an entire generation incapable of forming lasting marriages and so widespread that it produces more annual revenue … than all of the leading technology companies combined.”So, what can we do about this drug that is destroying the very foundation of our society? How can we protect our children and teach them to value God's design for marriage? We have a special guest on the show to help us answer these questions. Kristen Jenson is the founder of Defend Young Minds and the #1 bestselling author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, a read-aloud book to teach young children how to reject pornography. Her trusted resources and content, including the Brain Defense Digital Safety curriculum, have helped millions all over the world to defend children from all forms of sexual exploitation.

This week on the Exodus Cry Podcast, we are joined by Defend Young Minds founder Kristen Jenson to discuss protecting children from porn in the digital age. Kristen is the acclaimed author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, a digital safety expert, and the CEO of Glen Cove Press. In 2011, Kristen found out her friend's oldest son had sexually abused their younger children using pornography. Distraught, Kristen felt compelled to search online for resources to warn her friend's younger children about the dangers of viewing pornography but could not find anything. She set out to create resources for parents to address pornography exposure and consumption. As she began researching and talking to parents, she realized the need was even greater. Kristen began blogging about all she was learning, and it was out of this that Defend Young Minds was born. In our first episode of our third season, we tackle a very difficult subject that is impacting our children and families in a horrible way, Pornography. It is reaching into homes that you would never expect. As a matter of fact, Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/press-releases/new-report-reveals-truths-about-how-teens-engage-with-pornography) just did a very scientific poll and found that 73% of American teens have consumed pornography and on average, their exposure to pornography began when they were just 12 years old and and even younger. Our guest, Kristen Jenson of Defending Young Minds, is the strongest voice that we could find in this fight against Pornography's influence. Author of the hugely successful book "Good Pictures, Bad Pictures" Kristen Jenson joins me to have a discussion about talking to your kids about pornography. Unfortunately, it is not a question of "if" your child will come across porn as they are navigating the online world, it is a question of when. Kristen has some great thoughts and ideas on how to make the digital world a little safer, and how to prepare kids with a plan of action for when they encounter explicit content.
Here's a topic that has not been covered on this show, but I want to cover it because it's not only important to the health of our own minds, but to the world around us.The amounts spent on pornography in just the United States is staggering, and no one is immune from the risk.
