This is: EA Philippines Needs Your Help!, published by zianbee on March 21, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary In light of the current funding constraints in the EA community, EA Philippines has had a difficult time securing the means to continue its usual operations for this year. This can mean less support for growing a highly engaged community of Filipino EAs. We are seeking USD 43,000 as our preferred funding for 1 year of operations and a 2-month buffer. The minimum amount of funding we are seeking would be USD 28,000 for 1 year of operations. This will help us with our staffing as well as being able to produce valuable projects (e.g. introductory fellowship for professionals, career planning program, EA groups resilience building, leadership retreat, etc.) and guidance to encourage, support, and excite people in their pursuit of doing good. You can help our community with a donation through our Manifund post. :) Outline of this post Why donate to EA Philippines? What are EA Philippines' goals and how do we aim to achieve them? Who is on your team? What other funding is EA Philippines applying to? What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails? (premortem) Concluding thoughts Why Donate To EA Philippines Track record EA Philippines was founded in November 2018 by Kate Lupango, Nastassja "Tanya" Quijano, and Brian Tan. They made great progress in growing our community in 2019 and 2020, and the three of them received a community building grant (CBG) from CEA to work on growing the community from late 2020 until the end of 2021. Since then, EA PH has become one of the largest and most active groups among those in LMICs and Southeast Asia. The group has received grants from the EA Infrastructure Fund to fund us from 2022 2023, with Elmerei Cuevas serving as our Executive Director during this period. Since being founded, EA PH has: helped start three student chapters in the top three local universities organized a successful EAGxPhilippines conference being the 3rd most likely to be recommended among EAGs and EAGxs had over 300 different people complete an introductory EA fellowship of ours or our student chapters) had over 80 active members join EAG/EAGx conferences around the world including EAGxPhilippines (which also garnered 40 first-timer Filipinos) had 2 retreats for student organizer leadership and career planning members who have started promising EA projects (with a total of at least 14 EA-aligned organizations in the Philippines), such as the ones in the next section. However, EAIF's last grant to EA PH was only for 6 months (from April to September 2023), and they decided to just give the then team a 2-month exit grant rather than a renewal grant at the end of it. Due to the lack of secured funding, as well as wanting to rethink and redefine EA Philippines's strategic priorities, EA PH's board decided that it would be in the organization's best interest to explore new leadership to pursue its refined direction. The new leadership would then have to fundraise for their salaries and EA PH's operational expenses. The board led a public hiring round, and this led to them hiring us (Sam and Zian)[1] in late December to serve as interim co-directors of EA PH and to fundraise for EA PH. EA-Aligned Organizations in the Philippines: Case Studies Over the last few years, several EA PH members have started cause-specific organizations, projects, and initiatives. Below we highlight some Animal Empathy Philippines Animal Empathy Philippines was founded by Kate Lupango (co-founder of EA Philippines), Ging Geronimo (former volunteer at EA Philippines), and Janaisa Baril (former Communications and Events Associate of EA Philippines). The organization started with community building and now focuses on bringing farmed animal issues in the Philippines ...

We've talked in depth about semiconductor makers on the show, and today we want to go one step further to look at the largest manufacturers of semiconductor equipment in the US.  With an annual revenue of US$26.52 billion, our guest Applied Materials is a leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world.  The chipmaking tool giant counts tech titans Intel and Samsung among its customers. It had in February reported first quarter revenue of US$6.71 billion, beating estimates, with China's sales of US$3 billion accounting for 45 per cent of total revenue, up from 17 per cent seen a year ago.  But how does the firm assess the wider business environment given increasing US-China tensions and US curbs to export chipmaking equipment to China, and the increased adoption of innovative solutions like chiplets?  Meanwhile, Applied Materials had in 2022 announced that it is building a S$600 million plant here to expand its manufacturing and research operations with plans to further expand in the city state before the end of the decade. But what was the rationale behind the move? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Brian Tan, Regional President, Southeast Asia and Vice President, Applied Global Services, Applied Materials.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Celebrating Progress: Recent Highlights from the NYC EA Community, published by Alex R Kaplan on September 20, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Inspired by EA NYC's 10th birthday and the first-ever EAGxNYC, we wanted to share this unabashed brag post about New York City's EA community and its accomplishments! Below, we'll share highlights from EA NYC specifically, as well as the EA community in New York City more broadly. While it's true that living in New York sometimes instills a self-aggrandizing perspective, we unironically support all communities announcing their achievements and were inspired by the Spanish-Speaking Effective Altruist Community, the Dutch EA Community, and many others with success to report. We hope our posts provide additional context for groups around the world and inspire others to share their stories as well as any feedback and comments! For example, in February we posted about our community health infrastructure, and we have been heartened to see EA Germany share similar information. And, if this series inspires you to check out our little town, we've also recently published a guide to visiting NYC. Quick note on the relationship between EA in NYC and EA NYC Not to toot our own horn, but we consider EA NYC (the organization) to be a critical actor in the promotion and coordination of effective altruism in NYC. Despite the size, significance, and potential of the EA (and non-EA!) community in NYC, EA NYC is currently the only meta EA resource based in NYC. As a result, EA NYC serves as a resource hub, connector, and platform for a wide variety of EA initiatives and individuals interested in EA within the NYC metropolitan area. This takes shape in a variety of ways and can look like anything from providing newcomers with educational programming, to creating a platform for motivated community members to deepen their volunteer engagement, to assisting EA organizations with boosting job openings or finding meeting spaces. In short, EA NYC strives to not only execute our own community programming, but also to serve as a multiplier for other EA initiatives. So as we write this post, we are of course proud to describe the work our team has done and the progress we've made, but we also take pride in how far the community itself has come. We're honored to serve the NYC EA community, and we're thrilled to share some of the cool initiatives we've seen come out of our hometown! Community highlights Summary The NYC EA community is large The NYC EA community is active The NYC EA community is cool You're missing out if you're not here Size In the 2022 EA Survey, NYC had the largest US concentration of EAs outside of the Bay Area, consistent with the 2020 Survey results. According to Brian Tan at the Centre for Effective Altruism, EA NYC has the highest number of "engaged EAs" out of any group based on CEA's 2022 Group Census. In 2022, the New York EA community had approximately 600 active members who attended EA NYC events, registered interest in utilizing a NY EA co-working space, joined EA NYC subgroups, spoke one-on-one with EA NYC leadership, and/or attended EAG/EAGx conferences. In Q1 and Q2 2023, EA NYC saw 220 new event attendees (+49% relative to 2022). Over 1,250 people are subscribed to the EA NYC monthly newsletter (with a 59% six-month, rolling average open rate) and over 1,100 people are members on the EA NYC Slack (with a 187-person 6-month, rolling average active usership). EA NYC has 12 wonderful volunteer leaders who support the facilitation and coordination of events. Action Community Building Programming "Standard" programming (though it's anything but!) EA NYC strives to hold a minimum of one unique public event per week. In the course of a typical month, EA NYC typically holds at least one speaker presentation, at least one socia...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Top Idea Reports from the EA Philippines Mental Health Charity Ideas Research Project, published by Shen Javier on May 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In October 2021 to May 2022, EA Philippines organized the Mental Health Charity Ideas Research project. The project's goal was to find ideas that can become highly impactful and cost-effective charities in improving the well-being of people living in the Philippines and other low- to middle-income countries. It focused on children and adolescent mental health. This was a follow-up to the participation of Brian Tan and myself in Charity Entrepreneurship's 2021 Incubation Program, in their region-specific track for training people to research the top charity ideas in a region. The project was awarded $11,000 in funding from the EA Infrastructure Fund in 2021 for 1.2 FTE in salary for the project for 8 months. Brian transitioned to being an advisor of the project early on, and AJ Sunglao was brought on as a part-time project co-lead, while two part-time researchers (Mae Muñoz, and Zam Superadble) were also hired. Links to our reports We already held a brown bag session last June 11, 2022 discussing the research process and introducing the top four charity ideas we found last year. Now, we share deep reports on those ideas that detail the evidence supporting their effectiveness and how one might implement the charities in the Philippines. We also share the shallow reports made for the other top mental health interventions. Access the reports here: Deep Reports Self-Help Workbooks for Children and Adolescents in the Philippines and Low-to-Middle-Income Countries School-based Psychoeducation in the Philippines and Low-to-Middle-Income Countries Guided Self-Help Game-based App for Adolescents in the Philippines and Low-to-Middle-Income Countries Shallow Reports Here's a quick guide to our top ideas: Idea NameDescriptionCost-Effectiveness ($ per unit, total costs)Self-Help Workbooks for Children and AdolescentsThis intervention will develop and distribute self-help workbooks to improve depression and anxiety symptoms in children and young adolescents, particularly 6 to 18-year-olds. Depending on the severity of mental health disorders, the workbook can be accompanied by weekly guidance by lay counselors through telephone, email, social media, or other available platforms.School-based PsychoeducationThis preventive approach entails training and supervising teachers to deliver psychoeducation on mental health topics in their respective schools. Through weekly participatory learning sessions, students would learn to apply positive coping strategies, build interpersonal skills, and/or develop personal characteristics that would empower them to care for their mental health and navigate important life transitions. Guided Self-Help Game-based App for Adolescents The intervention is a self-help game-based mobile application for help-seeking adolescents aged 12 - 19 years old. As a self-help format, the app aims to teach service users concepts and skills that will aid them in addressing MH concerns. The content of the app will be based on evidence-based therapeutic modalities. The game-based format is used to enhance service user engagement and prevent dropout. Youth-led Mental Health SupportThis intervention is a community-based intervention for adolescents aged 13-18. It uses task-sharing principles in delivering basic para-mental health support by training community members like SK officials and student leaders in basic mental health skills such as psychoeducation, peer counseling, and psychological first aid. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The EAIF is discontinuing most university group funding, published by Max Daniel on August 19, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. tl;dr: The EAIF is no longer accepting applications for EA university group funding, effective immediately. University group organizers can instead apply to Open Phil's new University Organizer Fellowship (for paying for organizer time and/or group expenses), CEA's Group Support Funding (for group expenses), and UGAP (for financial support and guidance for early stage groups). If we receive applications from uni groups who are no longer eligible for EAIF funding, we will let you know and direct you to a more appropriate funding source. Applicants therefore do not need to worry that an application will, without their knowledge, remain unprocessed for eligibility reasons. You can find all the funding sources that currently provide funding to EA groups and group organizers in this page on the EA Groups Resource Centre. We expect the Open Phil's University Organizer Fellowship to have a similar evaluation process and turnaround time as the EAIF. We expect it will be different in that Open Phil's bar for funding may be somewhat higher (currently ~68% acceptance rate at Open Phil, versus just under 85% acceptance rate for EAIF university groups). If you have any questions or concerns about this change, please let us know in the comments or email max@effectivealtruismfunds.org. Outline: Application the EAIF is no longer accepting Applications the EAIF is still accepting Why we are making this change Information for current grantees For helpful comments we thank Catherine Low, Brian Tan, Asya Bergal, Eli Rose, Caleb Parikh, and Joan Gass. Applications the EAIF is no longer accepting We will stop accepting applications from university groups, as well as other, non-EA branded university groups, if they are eligible for Open Phil's University Organizer Fellowship. For context, with their University Organizer Fellowship, Open Phil is interested in funding a wide range of university student groups – not just EA-branded groups. They are interested in funding groups focused on longtermism, existential risks, rationality, Slate Star Codex / Astral Codex Ten, forecasting, specific cause areas or career paths (including biosecurity, potential risks from advanced artificial intelligence, and transformative technology policy), or “others similar or related to the above.” Open Phil also continues to be interested in funding groups focused on effective altruism — including those with a neartermist focus. See more detail about this in their EA Forum post & AMA. For groups focused on animal welfare, we plan to refer their applications to the Animal Welfare Fund going forward. If you are still uncertain about where you should apply for funding, contact groups@centreforeffectivealtruism.org and they can advise you about your funding options. Applications the EAIF is still accepting City and national groups are still welcome to apply to the EAIF. However, we recommend that those locations who are eligible for CEA's Community Building Grants apply there first. The following types of university group-related projects will remain eligible for EAIF funding: Personal development grants For example, if someone wants to skill up in a certain cause area while studying at university, they are welcome to apply to the EAIF. Infrastructure support If someone needs funding for a laptop, certain software, or something else relating to infrastructure, they are welcome to apply to the EAIF. Intergroup projects Projects that span multiple university groups, e.g. retreats, programs, or residencies can still apply to the EAIF. The EAIF remains open for university groups that are not eligible for Open Phil's University Organizer Fellowship. While we have not received any such applic...

welcome to the nonlinear library, where we use text-to-speech software to convert the best writing from the rationalist and ea communities into audio. this is: Introducing High Impact Professionals, published by DevonFritz, Federico Speziali on the effective altruism forum. Overview It is our pleasure to present to you our new EA organization, High Impact Professionals (HIP). Our vision is to enable EA working professionals to have the biggest positive impact possible. We imagine a community working together for the greater good, contributing not only through their money but also with their time and skills. We recently went through the 2021 Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program and received $100,000 in funding for our first full year of operations. The rest of this document will outline: The problem we are solving How we are solving it Our next steps How you can get involved Key Takeaways We created HIP to maximize the impact of EA working professionals and solve several identified problems within the EA ecosystem. We are going to pilot several promising interventions in year one to identify the most impactful path forward. We list them in the Pilots section of the post. We have many ways you can get involved. Our first pilot is workplace fundraising events. We have successfully run these in the past and are now helping EA working professionals (HIPs) host them at their organizations. If you are an EA working professional and want to increase your impact, become more engaged, and gain useful skills and EA career capital, register your interest to host a fundraising event. We will provide you with the resources and support needed to host a successful event. We want to talk to more HIPs to get a better understanding of the needs of our community. Through our own giving of time and money, we have a sense of what might be needed but want to validate this with others in the community. If you are an EA working professional looking to have more impact please register your interest here. We encourage you to have a low bar for doing this: if you are considering it, just do it! Please feel free to share with others you know who might be a good fit. Thanks to Cillian Crosson, Ula Zarosa, Aaron Gertler, Jack Lewars, Jan-Willem Van Putten, and Brian Tan for their invaluable feedback on this announcement. All errors are our own. Problem Impact According to the most recent EA Surveys, over half of all EAs are in the private sector and earning to give is the most common career choice amongst EAs with more than a third of votes cast. This group has resources like skills, time and money that they can contribute to high-impact organizations and through surveys have expressed a desire to do so. For example, the same survey revealed that a full 55% of EAs want to donate more, and more than one-third want to volunteer their time as a way to become more engaged. This means that the largest cohort of EAs is limited in their ultimate impact and seems to be facing a bottleneck. EA Community Issues In addition to impact problems, there have also been issues within the EA community that our organization can likely mitigate: Funding diversification - a recent survey of 29 meta organizations revealed that a majority of those polled have a strong desire for more funding diversification for their organization. Supply and demand issue with EA jobs - many EAs want to work for EA organizations but there are few positions available. This creates a lot of frustration for the many EAs that apply for an EA job but don't get one. A recent forum post implies this could be a range of 47-124 people being rejected per role. Insularity in EA - EA is quite insular and would likely benefit from stronger connections to the private sector, both to spread the ideas of EA more widely and to establish a more solid reputation for EA in wider circles. Evidence The rigorous research and selection process performed by Charity Entrepreneurship identified this idea as one of...

TFG will identify the most critical skill gaps in the EA movement and address them through training. TFG was incubated by Charity Entrepreneurship in 2021. The following is structured into: Overview of TFG TFG's short term plans Decisions and underlying assumptions How you can help Ask us anything We thank Brian Tan, Charles He, Devon Fritz, Isaac Dunn, James Ozden, and Sam Hilton for their invaluable feedback on this announcement. All errors and shortcomings are our own. Overview of TFG Why training? Track record Some EA organisations have experienced moderate success running training programmes and online courses. Animal Advocacy Careers ran a ~9 week online course, teaching core content about effective animal advocacy, effective altruism, and impact-focused career strategy. They recently published the results of two longitudinal studies they ran comparing and testing the cost-effectiveness of this online course and their one-to-one advising calls. Their results weakly suggested that while one-to-one calls are slightly more effective per participant, online courses are a slightly more cost-effective service Charity Entrepreneurship's two-month incubation programme aims to equip participants with the skills needed to found an effective non-profit. Through this programme, they have helped launch 16 effective organisations to date. The Centre for Effective Altruism uses online courses as a high fidelity method of spreading EA ideas and growing the movement. They run an Introductory EA Programme which introduces the core ideas of effective altruism through 1-hour discussions over the course of eight weeks. Other programmes offered by Peter Singer, the Centre for Applied Rationality, the Good Food Institute, and 80,000 Hours have also proved popular, suggesting that there is further demand for such courses. Movement demographics Movement demographics suggest that EAs are a promising audience for training. 80% are aged under 35 and a large proportion are still deciding what career to pursue or building up career capital. Over 50% of EAs also place career capital as a focus above direct impact. These demographic factors suggest a strong interest in gaining skills and participating in training programmes. Cause neutral and flexible Training is a cause neutral intervention. Cross-cutting programmes can be run which benefit several cause areas simultaneously or multiple targeted programmes can be run for different cause areas. Flexibility is particularly important when we consider that EA is a relatively young movement and that there may be cause areas which deserve our attention that we are currently neglecting. If information arises to suggest that we should switch our attention to another cause area (even temporarily), TFG could easily do so. Moreover, we believe that such organisational flexibility could help enable movement flexibility, as it creates the space for intellectual exploration to take place. Comparative advantage Our co-founding team has a relative amount of expertise designing and delivering training programmes. In particular, Steve has extensive experience in both the design and facilitation of large scale training and development programmes. He has spent over ten years in the corporate sector training and coaching across multinational firms. Cillian and Jan-Willem also have experience fac...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA Philippines' Strong Progress and Learnings in 2019, published by BrianTan on the AI Alignment Forum. Hi, EAs! I'm Brian Tan, co-founder of Effective Altruism Philippines. I'm writing this post to share the great progress we've made in starting and growing the EA Philippines community in our first full year in 2019. We've learned a lot of things along the way, and we'd like to share what worked and what hasn't for us here. How EA Philippines Started EA Philippines was first started by Kate Lupango in September 2018. Through help from LEAN and Wanyi Zeng (of EA Singapore), she was able to connect with other EA community builders in other countries and get resources on how to start a local community. She created a Facebook page for EA Philippines, and she posted on a Facebook volunteer group looking for volunteers to join the EA Philippines community. Jeffrey Escobal reached out to her to express interest after seeing that post. Kate also posted looking for mentors in the EA Group Organizers Facebook group. David Nash (of EA London) connected Kate with Tanya Quijano, a Filipina who had previously attended an EA London event. Finally, I found the page on Facebook a few weeks after Kate made it, and decided to reach out. The four of us met for the first time in November 2018, and decided to co-found the group and start growing the community. From left to right: Kate, Tanya, Jeffrey, and I (Brian) When we started, we had three main goals: 1. To increase awareness about EA in Manila 2. To build a friendly community for people interested in EA 3. To get Filipinos to increase their involvement in or donations to EA's top cause areas We've mostly been successful at the first two goals, but we aren't satisfied with our progress on the third. We'll talk more about that towards the end of the post. Key Outcomes in 2019 (our 1st year) 1. We've now identified 11 contributors and 7 participants in our local community (including us four core team members). We classified them based on CEA's Concentric Circles Model and our evaluation of where they fit in the funnel. 2. Around May 2019, we successfully applied for a general group funding grant from CEA, which allowed us to fund our operations from May to December 2019. Later, we successfully applied for a grant that covers January to December 2020. 3. In 2019, we held a total of 14 events - usually doing one per month. We now average 20 attendees per event, and we get an average of four “repeat” attendees per event (not including us co-founders). 4. We've been able to partner with the local offices of EA-recommended organizations such as Oxfam, Innovations for Poverty Action, and IDInsight, and have representatives from their orgs speak and attend our events. 5. We've also met or had calls with members from various EA communities, such as EA Singapore, Toronto, Montreal, Norway, and London, and with members of EA organizations, such as GiveWell, LEAN, CEA, Rethink Charity, and The Life You Can Save. 6. 5 student members of EA PH started a chapter named EA Blue at the Ateneo De Manila University in August, and they recruited 60 students to join their chapter. On Organizing Events Photos from some of our events in 2019 When we started, we didn't know anyone else in Manila who was interested in EA. We were all fairly new to the movement. As such, we decided to focus on holding monthly events in order to spread awareness about EA and its various facets and cause areas. We worked on EA PH part-time, on top of our day jobs. At first, we were paying for expenses out of our own pockets. Thankfully, we got funding from CEA to fund our events from May to December 2019. This table includes information on all the events we've held so far: To explain some things about the table above: The March 26 talk was given by Yuna Liang, a Senior Research ...

Welcome to today’s episode where we share a meaningful conversation with Doctor Brian Tan or Doc Bry, as he is widely known. Doc Bran Tan is the owner of The Royal British Medical, Dental and Cosmetic Care Centers in Pampanga. Doc Bry is a scholar and a Cum Laude graduate of the Angeles University Foundation where he took up his pre-med and medicine courses. He later on attended the post grad education as a scholar at the prestigious Harvard Medical School. Later on he also attended the Harvard Business School. He is the first person I’ve personally met who’ve attended this Ivy League school. Doc Bry is an active part of his community. We met him at the Young Entrepreneur’s of Pampanga meet-up. He is the President of the Philippine Medical Informatics Society. And the Vice President and Board of Trustees member of the Philippine Academy of Aesthetic Surgery. He is also the head of the Ben Tan Foundation - a foundation his family started in memory of his father. Aside from helping people from his profession and businesses, Doc Bry enjoys sharing his personal inspirations @DocBry’s Inspiration, and the things that make him laugh at @DocBry’s Humor. In this episode, we talk about: The unusual route he took to get into Harvard School of Medicine Why he considers himself not as a businessman but, a problem solver. Why he believes that if you’re not going to help others when you have 100pesos, you’ll never help others when you have millions. He explains, Why we should surround ourselves with people smarter than us. The reason why he equates life with time, and how we can better manage our time by ranking our priorities. And how we can flip failures by turning them into lessons. We also talk about why he calls himself the Happiness Vampire and his childhood dreams prior to becoming a doctor. Without further ado, I hope you enjoy this wide ranging conversation with, Doctor Brian Tan.
