It is time once again for our Round Up episode for the month of September, where we talk about some of the most interesting and timely art news stories of the last month with our writers here at Artnet. This month, Art Angle co-hosts Ben Davis and Kate Brown are joined by senior writer Sarah Cascone, and the three stories they discuss all center around museums. The first is the announcement that longtime director of New York's Museum of Modern Art Glenn Lowry will retire after 30 years, which marks the end of an era, and perhaps the beginning of something new. Artnet's Katya Kazakina wrote an article speculating on who might replace Lowry, and the panel discusses what this means for the future of one of the world's most famous museums. There's been a lot of leadership around New York museums, with the news of Alex Rüger taking over the role of director at the Frick Collection from Ian Wardropper, who is stepping down in 2025; plus the departure of Klaudio Rodriguez from the Bronx Museum, which has seen three directors in just seven years. Next up, the trio takes a deep dive into an article penned by Ben Davis that shares the result of an analysis he did looking at the shows on view at over 200 museums across the United States to see which artists are cropping up most frequently. The results were surprising, and give us all a window into the cultural zeitgeist. Finally, we talk about the news of a rediscovered painting by beloved Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi that is going on view in Texas, based on a story written by Sarah Cascone.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My Experience as a Full-Time EA Community Builder in NYC, published by Alex R Kaplan on July 26, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Some rewards and challenges of working as an EA NYC community builder over the past two years Motivations I wanted to share these thoughts for a few reasons: 1. I hope this serves as a reference point for people considering careers in EA community building (though this is only one reference point, of course). 2. EA NYC is hiring an Executive Director! If you're interested, apply here by the end of July 28th (Eastern Time). 3. I think there's often value in people discussing their jobs.[1] By the way, I have a few relevant disclaimers/caveats that I encourage you to check out at the bottom of this post. For now, I'd just like to say that I'm writing this in a personal capacity and do not claim to represent the views of any of my employers, past, present, or future. Otherwise, I may occasionally update this post to correct any misleading/inaccurate points. Please let me know if you catch anything that seems off! Lastly, many thanks to those who encouraged me to share this post and especially to Elliot Teperman for sharing some helpful thoughts on an earlier draft. Of course, all mistakes are my own. Summary From July 2022 to July 2024 (ongoing at the time of writing), I will have supported Effective Altruism NYC (EA NYC). In this position, I worked closely with the Centre for Effective Altruism's (CEA) Community Building Grants (CBG) program, which provided funding and support for my position. This work has been pretty great for me! Like anything, there have been some bumps in the road, but I think it has been broadly good. I imagine many cases where I would recommend EA community building and/or CBG program participation for specific individuals. However, I would also like to give some disclaimers about things I wish I had known beforehand. Given my uncertainty at various points throughout the past two years, I've questioned whether taking the role was the right move… However, if I had known two years ago what I know now, I would have felt a lot more confident in my decision![2] Here's an outline of my considerations: Some good things I built a lot of skills I made a lot of connections (Perhaps aided by the other benefits) I got access to more opportunities (Definitely aided by the other benefits) I built up my confidence quite a bit Some mixed things I felt my compensation was fair, but that might be specific to me Personal career planning was complicated, but that helped me design a new path for myself Working at a small (EA) organization has had some pretty straightforward pros and cons Diving deep into EA has been stressful at times, but I now feel better because of it I also left a lot out! Feel free to reach out and/or add (anonymous) comments if you have any thoughts and/or questions (though I imagine I may only sometimes be able to answer/help with some things). Context CBG program participation According to CEA's website, the Community Building Grants (CBG) program aims to build flourishing communities of individuals who work to maximize their impact using critical reasoning and evidence. I've benefited from the following kinds of support from the program: Personal grant funding (which constituted my salary) Network with fellow CBG community builders Including in-person retreats and online community 1-on-1 support from the program's manager I did not leverage this support much, but I received significant support from the first two points mentioned.[3] One point to clarify: the Community Building Grants program is one way to fund EA community-building work. One could also do EA community building through various other models. EA NYC context EA NYC started as a small meetup group in 2013. Since then, it has grown into a communit...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Celebrating Progress: Recent Highlights from the NYC EA Community, published by Alex R Kaplan on September 20, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Inspired by EA NYC's 10th birthday and the first-ever EAGxNYC, we wanted to share this unabashed brag post about New York City's EA community and its accomplishments! Below, we'll share highlights from EA NYC specifically, as well as the EA community in New York City more broadly. While it's true that living in New York sometimes instills a self-aggrandizing perspective, we unironically support all communities announcing their achievements and were inspired by the Spanish-Speaking Effective Altruist Community, the Dutch EA Community, and many others with success to report. We hope our posts provide additional context for groups around the world and inspire others to share their stories as well as any feedback and comments! For example, in February we posted about our community health infrastructure, and we have been heartened to see EA Germany share similar information. And, if this series inspires you to check out our little town, we've also recently published a guide to visiting NYC. Quick note on the relationship between EA in NYC and EA NYC Not to toot our own horn, but we consider EA NYC (the organization) to be a critical actor in the promotion and coordination of effective altruism in NYC. Despite the size, significance, and potential of the EA (and non-EA!) community in NYC, EA NYC is currently the only meta EA resource based in NYC. As a result, EA NYC serves as a resource hub, connector, and platform for a wide variety of EA initiatives and individuals interested in EA within the NYC metropolitan area. This takes shape in a variety of ways and can look like anything from providing newcomers with educational programming, to creating a platform for motivated community members to deepen their volunteer engagement, to assisting EA organizations with boosting job openings or finding meeting spaces. In short, EA NYC strives to not only execute our own community programming, but also to serve as a multiplier for other EA initiatives. So as we write this post, we are of course proud to describe the work our team has done and the progress we've made, but we also take pride in how far the community itself has come. We're honored to serve the NYC EA community, and we're thrilled to share some of the cool initiatives we've seen come out of our hometown! Community highlights Summary The NYC EA community is large The NYC EA community is active The NYC EA community is cool You're missing out if you're not here Size In the 2022 EA Survey, NYC had the largest US concentration of EAs outside of the Bay Area, consistent with the 2020 Survey results. According to Brian Tan at the Centre for Effective Altruism, EA NYC has the highest number of "engaged EAs" out of any group based on CEA's 2022 Group Census. In 2022, the New York EA community had approximately 600 active members who attended EA NYC events, registered interest in utilizing a NY EA co-working space, joined EA NYC subgroups, spoke one-on-one with EA NYC leadership, and/or attended EAG/EAGx conferences. In Q1 and Q2 2023, EA NYC saw 220 new event attendees (+49% relative to 2022). Over 1,250 people are subscribed to the EA NYC monthly newsletter (with a 59% six-month, rolling average open rate) and over 1,100 people are members on the EA NYC Slack (with a 187-person 6-month, rolling average active usership). EA NYC has 12 wonderful volunteer leaders who support the facilitation and coordination of events. Action Community Building Programming "Standard" programming (though it's anything but!) EA NYC strives to hold a minimum of one unique public event per week. In the course of a typical month, EA NYC typically holds at least one speaker presentation, at least one socia...

This week, the guys talk about Orlando's wins off of a big second half in Chicago. Eddie, Cleon, Mike & Alex R give you their insights from this match in beyond. This includes heir stock up & stock down after the return to play post Leagues Cup. We answered the question of whether we were rusty or just needed a good kick to shake off the cobwebs. The guys also looked ahead to our 3 match in 8 days marathon, and the subsequent marathon to follow the international break. Ultimately, we previewed our first ever match against a red hot, second in MLS St. Louis & talked about our chances in our first home match in nearly a month. As always, we ended with some fun shoutouts that went all over the place from MLS banter to fantasy football pre-bragging. Thanks as always to our sponsors & especially to our listeners. Vamos Orlando! After a touch week of sitting with out elimination from Leagues Cup, and with almost two weeks until Orlando's next match in Chicago, the guys sat down to talk about the Miami match. Mike, Eddie, Cleon and Alex R discussed how we looked vs Inter Miami Messi, the ref show, and what could have been done differently. As always we took stock up and stock down, then we had a little fun and did mid-ish season awards. Finally, we asked the existential question of "what comes next", with a long time still to wait until we play the Fire at Soldier Field ten days from now. And, of course, shoutouts. Thanks for listening and #VamosOrlando O.L.D. pod SponsorsField Turf USA https://fieldturf.com/en/Eddie Cruz Comparion Insurance Agenthttps://www.comparioninsurance.com/insurance-agent/florida/orlando-0565/eddie-cruz

On Today's episode of the TFB Behind The Gun Podcast, I've brought on a new friend of mine, Alex Revelie from Guns.com to talk a little about his experiences in the gun industry and his lead-up to his tenure at Guns.com. Guns.com started off much like TFB did as an online firearms publication talking about news within the firearms world. However, Guns.com soon opened up an online store selling firearms and has grown exponentially over the years and developed itself into one of the most unique online gun stores. Today Alex tells us all about how Guns.com works and how you might even be able to sell your own guns using their website! In addition, Alex shares a bit about his background and experience with guns including service in both the US Navy as well as military contracting! Please welcome Alex Revelie from Guns.com to the show!
