True Crime All The Time Unsolved

Matt Flores was murdered in his workplace parking lot on a seemingly normal morning in March 1994. Three decades later, investigators have not identified a suspect or even a potential motive. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the murder of Matt Flores. There is considerable intrigue surrounding this case. Matt was an intelligent guy with a wife and a daughter. He served in the army, and he had come up with the idea for several medical devices, on which he was partnering with a doctor to develop. He was on the ninth day of his training at a new job at Applied Materials when he was shot dead in the parking lot. John Clark is Senior Vice President of Technology and Strategic Innovation at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, the legendary advanced development program behind the U-2, SR-71, F-117, and F-35. Over his 27-year career, including 25 inside Skunk Works, he has led some of the most important innovations in aerospace and defense. Chris Moran is Vice President and General Manager of Lockheed Martin Ventures, the corporate venture arm investing in breakthrough startups across AI, autonomy, advanced manufacturing, power, and propulsion to bring critical technologies into Lockheed's programs. In this episode of Defense Tech Underground, we sit down with John and Chris to explore how a century-old prime contractor sustains a culture of innovation while working alongside a new generation of defense tech startups. We cover: Skunk Works culture and the 14 rules – why they still matter today, and how Clark applied them in leading programs from the F-22 to modern autonomy efforts. Innovation with purpose – Lockheed's philosophy of tying new technology directly to warfighter needs, from AI-tuned radar to layered defense systems. Lockheed Ventures – Moran's view on “gaps and hedges,” the fund's 90+ portfolio companies, and how primes and startups can create one-plus-one-equals-three outcomes. AI and open architectures – where generative AI, advanced autonomy, and spectrum convergence are reshaping design, manufacturing, and operations. The prime paradox – responding to critics who call primes slow and risk-averse, and why, in Clark's words, “don't believe the hype—innovation happens every day inside Lockheed.” This conversation highlights how the largest defense contractor in the world is leaning into venture capital, software-hardware convergence, and cultural lessons from Skunk Works to keep pace with evolving threats while partnering with startups. This episode is hosted by Josh Pickering and Andrew Couillard. Full Bios: John Clark John Clark is Senior Vice President, Technology and Strategic Innovation at Lockheed Martin, where he leads enterprise technology strategy and investment, including companywide digital and AI initiatives. He moved into the role after serving as Vice President and General Manager of Skunk Works from 2022 to early 2025. Earlier, Clark was Vice President of Engineering and Technology for Aeronautics and previously Vice President for ISR and Unmanned Systems at Skunk Works, roles that spanned portfolio leadership, systems integration, and multi-domain operations. Chris Moran Chris Moran is Executive Director and General Manager of Lockheed Martin Ventures, the company's venture capital arm. He joined in 2016 after three decades in Silicon Valley, including senior executive roles at Applied Materials and eight years running Applied Ventures. He holds BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT. Moran's team invests across priority areas aligned with Lockheed Martin's strategy. The fund size was doubled to $400M in 2022, and LM Ventures partners closely with internal engineering groups on adoption. He also engages with Stanford's Hacking for Defense program.

Today, we are joined by Susan Winchester.Susan Schmitt Winchester is a former Chief Human Resources Officer of Applied Materials and co-author of Healing at Work, Susan brings more than 35 years of senior HR experience—and a deeply personal mission to help professionals transform workplace pain into personal growth. Drawing from her own experience as an Adult Survivor of a Damaged Past, she combines science, storytelling, and strategy to help us turn our triggers into triumphs. In this episode, we explore how our past experiences, particularly childhood wounds, show up in workplace behaviors and how leaders can transform these patterns into sources of strength and resilience. Susan introduces the concept of ASDP (Adult Survivors of a Damaged Past) and reveals how nearly 67% of adults have experienced significant adversity before age 18, yet many remain unaware of how these experiences drive their professional reactions. Through real-world examples and research-backed strategies, we discover how workplace conflicts—what Susan calls "bumper car moments"—can become powerful opportunities for healing and growth rather than sources of ongoing pain.Key topics include:Understanding ASDP (Adult Survivors of a Damaged Past) and how childhood experiences manifest in workplace behaviors like perfectionism, people-pleasing, and fear of criticismThe difference between the unconscious wounded career path and the conscious healing career path, and how to make the shiftHow "bumper car moments" - workplace conflicts and triggers - can become catalysts for transformation rather than sources of sufferingThe Rapid Power Reclaim method for pausing, creating choice, and responding from strength rather than reacting from old woundsPractical strategies for managers to support team members while maintaining appropriate boundaries and focusing on performanceLearn from Susan's insights how to recognize when past experiences are driving current workplace behaviors and gain practical tools for creating psychological safety in your organization. John Buckingham is more bullish, arguing that a "voracious appetite" for chips keeps Applied Materials in the conversation. My guest for Episode #531 of the Lean Blog Interviews Podcast is Dr. Melisa Buie, a seasoned operations and engineering leader with decades of experience in high-tech manufacturing. Episode page with video, transcript, and more Melisa has held senior roles at companies like Lam Research, Applied Materials, and Coherent, where she led large-scale Lean transformations and helped drive cultural change across global operations. With a PhD in nuclear engineering and plasma physics, Melisa brings a rare combination of technical depth and people-centered leadership to her work. In this episode, we explore Melisa's Lean journey — from her early days in Six Sigma to becoming a global Lean leader at Coherent. She shares how her perspective shifted from project-based improvement to empowering teams with daily problem-solving skills. Melisa discusses the critical role of psychological safety in building a continuous improvement culture, and how giving people "permission to improve" must be backed by leadership behavior and support. We also touch on the challenges of applying Lean principles in complex, low-volume/high-mix manufacturing environments and why principles still matter more than tools. We also discuss Melisa's book Problem Solving for New Engineers, written to bridge the gap between academic preparation and the real-world challenges engineers face in industry. She previews her upcoming book, Faceplant: Free Yourself from Failure's Funk, which tackles the emotional side of failure and how we can grow through it. Whether you're a Lean leader, a coach, or an engineer just starting out, this episode is packed with valuable insights on leadership, learning, and making improvement accessible for everyone. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: How did you first get involved with Lean or Six Sigma? Which books influenced you early in your Lean journey? How did your company shift from project-based Six Sigma to a Lean culture? Where did the push for culture change come from—top-down or grassroots? What role did you play in leading Lean at Coherent? What does it mean to “give people permission to improve,” and why is that necessary? How do leaders create psychological safety to support continuous improvement? How did your background in nuclear engineering and plasma physics lead to a career in semiconductors and lasers? How do Lean principles apply in low-volume, high-mix environments? What inspired you to write Problem Solving for New Engineers? How does the book help bridge the gap between university labs and industry problem solving? Why is experimentation and scientific thinking often missing in workplace culture? How do you explain the value of iterative cycles like PDSA to new engineers? What is design of experiments (DOE), and how does it improve problem solving? When is it helpful to let people run experiments with predictable outcomes? How did your second book, Faceplant: Free Yourself from Failure's Funk, come about? Why do people fear failure in personal life but accept it in professional settings? How can we reframe failure as a learning opportunity rather than something to avoid? How do you personally deal with failure and setbacks, like learning a foreign language? This podcast is part of the #LeanCommunicators network.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's MBA admissions podcast we began by discussing the Round 3 activity on LiveWire; interview invites and final decisions continue to roll out for this shortened application round; next week UPenn / Wharton, Northwestern / Kellogg, IESE, MIT / Sloan, Yale SOM, Minnesota / Carlson, Columbia, Washington / Foster, UCLA / Anderson and Washington / Olin are scheduled to release final decisions. Graham noted a new Clear Admit promotion, where for every new entry we receive on DecisionWire, that maps out a candidate's entire application journey, Clear Admit will donate $10 to the Forte Foundation. Graham then highlighted Clear Admit's MBA admissions fair in Boston, on Wednesday. This event includes panel discussions, one of which is focused on Consulting hiring and is led by Bain. Twenty-four of the top 25 U.S.-based MBA programs are planning to attend, along with London Business School. Signups for this event are here: https://bit.ly/mbafair2025 The remainder of Application Overview events series will then be hosted, virtually, on May 20 and 21. Signups for those events are here: https://bit.ly/appoverview25 Graham noted two articles recently published on Clear Admit. The first covers the broad topic regarding what you can do with an MBA, looking at post MBA careers. The second article is a deep-dive research piece that examines placement statistics of the top MBA programs, for those seeking an MBA for their entrepreneurial ambitions. It's no surprise that Harvard and Stanford top the list of programs that future entrepreneurs join. Graham highlighted three Real Humans alumni spotlights, alums from HEC / Paris who established a Search Fund, Washington / Olin working at Applied Materials, and Ohio State / Fisher working at Bank of America. Finally, Graham discussed a forthcoming podcast featuring the leader of career services at Georgetown / McDonough. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is an engineer who is now working in the renewable energy space. They have a 3.57 GPA and need to retake the GRE. This week's second MBA candidate is from Canada, and is also an engineer, working in Toronto. They have nine years of experience, and a 337 GRE. The final MBA candidate is deciding between Cornell / Johnson, UVA / Darden and Michigan / Ross, and is seeking a career in investment banking. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Toch is Richards menig: Never sell ASML. A member of the illustrious Transformational Leadership Council created by Jack Canfield, uniting many of the world's top personal growth luminaries, Zen has worked with over 40,000 people, including training 4,000 master students, on the nuances of how recognize and act on the messages of their IGS to achieve a peak life in alignment with their life purpose. An internationally renowned inspirational teacher, speaker, author and executive coach, Zen's passion is teaching people to tap into their innate inner guidance to generate consistent, successful results in life. The result is replacing exhaustion, anxiety, fear and dread with ease, joy, flow and fulfillment. Zen's programs have helped thousands of people all over the world transform their lives for the better, with sustained positive changes in their business and personal lives. Her compassion radiates through her work, and her style is down to earth, practical, humorous and wise. Zen's international bestselling book, Your Inner GPS is an easy-to-read how-to on the way to let this inner wisdom guide you to success, and the Smart Soul Academy provides a deeper easily-accessible online guide to mastering this art. The key to Zen's success arrived when she decoded her own Internal Guidance System® and learned that everyone was born with a factory installed Inner GPS. In the beginning, she used it fuel her own success, as founder and CEO of one of the first Internet design companies in the world. The company grew exponentially, and worked with Fortune 500 companies, including Applied Materials, IBM, Electronic Arts, BP and VISA. After that firm dissolved in the dot-com collapse, she found herself filling the request of many of her fellow entrepreneurs and executives to advise them on how she was seemingly emotionally untouched by the rollercoaster they were experiencing. It was the springboard for her to become a full-time executive coach and IGS guide. She has since coached thousands of business leaders to use their IGS for success in every area of their lives. Zen's rise to fame and success capped a life that began in an abusive dysfunctional home, saw her experience sexual abuse at the hands of someone outside her family, forced her to seek emancipation at 16 years old, dropped out of high school and then struggled to make a living until she discovered her IGS. She went on to earn a degree in Global Politics with Mandarin Chinese and Minor in Art History from U.C. Davis, before stepping into the rise of the San Francisco, CA, digital companies in the mid 1990s and became CEO and a founding member of The Netkitchen one of the first usability and internet design firms in the world. Zen is a breast cancer survivor and busy home schooling mom, in additional to her Academy work.
