This leads to a discussion about how great fighters - Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali & Adam Carolla - started boxing. Then Adam recounts the many run-ins with his childhood bully, Chris Dittman. After that Adam tests Godfrey's knowledge of old TV theme songs and they bond over their shared appreciation of Thin Lizzy. Next, Jayson “Mayhem” Miller begs to read the news including stories about Nvidia employees having to work insanely long hours but not quitting because of the “lavish” pay, LeBron James not allowing son Bronny to call him “Dad” on the court, a lonely dolphin attacking people in Japan, and an epic cobra vs. mongoose fight on an airport runway in India. Then, Godfrey talks about working with Robert Wagner on “A Dennis the Menace Christmas” which leads them down a long rabbit hole of TV & movie references and discussing what makes Godfrey able to retain information so well. The Pittsburgh Pirates were the doormat of the National League for much of the 1950s but began to turn things around late in the decade. Through changes in the front office and management, the Bucs had their first winning season in a decade in 1958 but slipped to fourth place the following year. 1960: When the Pittsburgh Pirates Had Them All the Way is the story of that magical run, from spring training to a wild World Series against the New York Yankees. Wayne Stewart brings his love of baseball, plus extensive research and player interviews to the table in this comprehensive look at a unique team that won 95 games and then took the Yankees the distance. Shortstop Dick Groat earned the NL MVP Award, 20-game winner Vernon Law took Cy Young honors, and an outfielder named Roberto Clemente hit .314 with a then career-high 16 home runs. Players such as Harvey "The Kitten" Haddix, Roy Face, Hal Smith, and Bill Mazeroski made their respective marks; the latter was mostly a defensive specialist who hit the series-clinching homer. A native of Pittsburgh, Wayne Stewart grew up in Donora, Pennsylvania. The town produced several athletes who made it in the pros, including Stan Musial and Ken Griffey, Senior, and Junior (Stewart in fact was a high school teammate of the elder Griffey). Stewart is the author of a string of books on baseball, football and basketball, and has interviewed some of the biggest names in professional sports. "A must-read for every baseball fan." -- Vernon Law

Barbara Smith, President of Cincinnati based Journey Steel, joins Jack and Randy to discuss her Cincinnati Reds fandom. The youngest of eight children, Barb was a young girl who watched her father play in minor league Negro baseball, and became a Reds fan in the early 1970s when she attended a game at Riverfront Stadium and wanted her own "flag"! (pennant)Barbs recalls her years as a Rosie Red, her favorite players George Foster, Eddie Milner, Bronson Arroyo,  and most recently Nick Castellanos, chasing down autographs and a foul ball, and catching a ball thrown into the right field stands. Barb also recounts her memories as a season ticket holder and her Opening Day attendance.  One of her highlights was a head nod from Ken Griffey, Jr., while Brandon Phillips was chasing the 30-30 Club.As Secretary of the Reds Community Fund, Barb describes her pride at the dedication of Cleveland Parker Field in Avondale as well as her years of involvement with Knothole Baseball in the inner city.Win a $50 Gift Card from Prime Cincinnati by emailing us at freepete14@gmail.com! Figuring out what you want to do with your life is still the central conundrum of growing up. But most people in advanced years still joke about their own lack of clarity. Most people just shrug their shoulders at the idea and laugh it off. I don't think it's very funny; I think it's tragic. I've been fascinated for over twenty years now about figuring out how to figure things out. A few days ago, I stumbled upon a pocket of psychological research that got me fired up. It's the same exhilarated feeling I got when I found a Ken Griffey, Jr. Upper Deck rookie card in 1989 (ikyk). It's called Self-Determination Theory (SDT), and it's all about knowing what to want and set your sights on—the process by which we pay attention to the deeper parts of ourselves and learn to live in alignment with our core nature. I cannot wait to tell you all about it! Go to theyouschool.com/checklist to download our Thirty Questions Every Kid Must Answer to Build a Meaningful Life

Will the Mariners step up and handle business or will they fold under the immense pressure? Analytics, Ken Griffey wasn't a good centerfielder, Puck isn't too pleased w/ that, the fact that some people believe there are a few other centerfielders with the Mariners that are better… Jamal Adams will be returning on Monday Night Football, so what does that mean? The mayor drops in to preview what he has planned on his show on cross talk.

Junior Pottymouth and his hours-old Mariners cap sit in while Patti splits for the beach. Playoff ponderings include the rise of the underdogs, just how many non-baseball things you can do during an 18-inning game and still see most of it, and the lefty vegan pitching for the Hammers. Manny Machado not only being That Shirtless Guy but also learning phrases in Korean to encourage teammate Ha-seong Kim have almost won Pottymouth over. Wil Myers and his wife are already our people, buying celebratory shots in bars for fans all over town. Seattle, where a roof is a reasonable choice, chose to play with it open on Saturday, when Seattle's air quality index was one of  the worst in the world. On the other hand, Mariners provided a mirror to the statue of late play by play announcer Dave Niehaus so he could watch the playoff game happening behind his back.Junior Pottymouth questions the MVP take that Aaron Judge was under more pressure than Ohtani this season so that should factor in to voting.  Pottymouth thinks that is just fruit salad. The Police Blotter is slimier than usual with what we learn around the sentencing of Eric Kay in the death of Tyler Skaggs. Pottymouth wants to work in a moderately priced side trip to see the Arizona leg of the World Baseball Classic – at least those tickets are already on sale. Jazz will represent Great Britain, and Ken Griffey, Jr. is the hitting coach for Team USA. Winter Ball is getting started – find your streaming service! COUNTDOWN EPISODE 49 A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: The FBI is preparing to search The Trump Golf Club And Cemetery in New Jersey or Trump Tower in New York. That's the clear implication of The New York Times report (2:24) that the Justice Department notified Trump's lawyers that it is not convinced that all the classified documents stolen by Trump have yet been retrieved (2:45) CNN went a step further, sourcing that DOJ demanded to Trump's attorneys all remaining documents must be returned. (2:53) There have been hints (like those empty folders with "CLASSIFIED" on them (3:14) And there was almost a compromise, but now Trump is hard-lining this and ultimately this ends with another search (5:02) Apart from the danger of him still having docs, there's the chance he's already sold or lost or had some stolen. (6:03) More bad news for Trump: Secret Service confirms Oath Keepers contacted them about "security procedures" which they position as ordinary but which a witness at the sedition trial implies had something to do with invocation of The Insurrection Act (8:20) And a key Proud Boy has flipped against Enrique Tarrio (8:51) But at least no one invoked The Herschel Walker Defense. B-Block (12:13) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Theodore, in New York (13:33) IN SPORTS: Baseball overshadows its own playoffs with streaming controversy while Canada's hockey scandal just keeps getting worse (15:49) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Matt Walsh-Blog defends his support for impregnating 16-year olds, and competes for honors with Kari Lake and TNT hockey nudnik Paul Bissonnette (17:45) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It is exactly 47 years since my first appearance on a professional radio station, when they told me I was only going to do one story in a five-minute sportscast and it was all a lie and I was 16 and I mispronounced my name. Twice. And I am actually letting you hear clips from it. C-Block (27:03) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: His epic story of public panic, and people so convinced they were right that they ignored common sense, science, and what their own eyes showed them: The Day The Dam Broke (42:22) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL BONUS: My entire 11:15 PM sportscast on WVBR-FM, Ithaca NY, on Tuesday, October 7, 1975!    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Known as one of the most prolific home run hitters baseball has ever had, Griffey Jr paved the way for many young black athletes to chase their dreams and became a global icon for his elite play, charismatic attitude and approach to the sport of baseball. Starting the backwards hat trend, earning nicknames of the natural and Cincinnati Kid were all part of the larger than life persona that fans idolized about the young athlete.  Following in the footsteps of his father, Ken Griffey, the young Griffey knew playing professional baseball was something obtainable at a young age. Ryan asks him about his experiences with his father growing up and Griffey Jr tells the guys that his father was a “normal” dad. An individual who took pride in household structure and spending quality time with his children. At home, he was dad and on the field he was my teammate. It's no secret that this father-son duo was historic. Ryan asks about the lack of diversity within MLB and what Griffey believes to be one word- money. Baseball serves to be a challenging sport for minority communities due to financial obligations. They guys speak on the reason behind why he wore #42 and how Griffey Jr understands that his legacy wouldn't exist without Jackie Robinson's ability to withstand. Fred and Channing ask about the use of steroids in the league and the effect it has had on the game and players as well as a personal whether he's ever been affected by not winning a World Series, Ken lets the guys know he's content because he gets to write HOF after his name and that to him is everything. With not too much left on his bucket list, there is one moment that Griffey Jr is looking forward to seeing, and that is the day where Lebron James may play with his son on the same NBA team. Griffey Jr. shares how he already told Lebron that both him and his dad will be in attendance that day to see them make history.  If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 877-8-HOPENY/text HOPENY (467369) (NY)1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537) (IL/IN/LA/MI/NJ/PA/WV/WY), 1-800-NEXT STEP (AZ), 1-800-522-4700 (CO/KS/NH), 888-789-7777/visit ccpg.org/chat (CT), 1-800-BETS OFF (IA), visit OPGR.org (OR), call/text TN REDLINE 1-800-889-9789 (TN), or 1-888-532-3500 (VA).21+ (18+ NH/WY). Sports' Forgotten Heroes
122 Dave Bancroft - MLB

Sports' Forgotten Heroes

The greatest players to have ever appeared in a Major League Baseball game are honored and immortalized in Cooperstown, New York at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. Ted William and Joe DiMaggio. Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial. Of course there's Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Tom Seaver and more recently Ken Griffey, Jr. and Mariano Rivera. But there are dozens upon dozens more who have been enshrined and whose stories we know so little about. Names very few of us recognize. Guys like Dan Brouthers, Deacon White, Bid McPhee and George Davis. Guys who had great careers, but guys whom we know so little about - not matter how deserving of a plaque they are. Another of those names is Dave Bancroft. He made his debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1915 and led them to a World Series appearance. A career .279 hitter, Bancroft enjoyed his best years with the New York Giants for whom he hit .310 and played shortstop on a team that went to three straight World Series and twice came out on top, beating the New York Yankees in 1921 and 1922. Bancroft was a "beauty" at shortstop. In fact, his game might most be compared to that of a more recent defensive "wiz" - Ozzie Smith. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, author Tom Alesia joins for a wonderful conversation about one of baseball's most obscure Hall of Famers - Dave Bancroft. Tom's new book, "Beauty At Short" is a terrific retrospective on a career so many know so little about. Tom and I talk about Dave's early struggles at the plate, his defensive genius in the field, his desire to manage, his days as a playing-manager with the Boston Braves, his days as a Manager in the All America Girls Baseball Association and Dave's life off the field.
