Want to get in touch? Send Claire a message!Welcome to Episode 95 of The Eat for Endurance Podcast! I have an Athlete Nutrition Profile for you today, featuring ultrarunner and coach Jes Woods. You may already be familiar with Jes, especially if you live in NYC. She coaches thousands of athletes through Nike Run Club, Brooklyn Track Club, and Brooklyn Trail Club, and has also worked with boutique fitness studios including Mile High Run Club and Flywheel. Jes also is a fierce athlete herself. She competed as a triple jumper for nearly a decade, and then discovered distance running after college while working in broadcasting at NBC. She ultimately embraced the ultra running community, started coaching, and turned fitness into a full-time career. We had a great discussion about her nutrition and how that has changed over time as she transitioned into distance running. We explore how she fuels herself, from the marathon to the 200 mile distance, as well as what she observes and teaches her own athletes. Jes also shares that she hates to cook, and tells us how she keeps herself well-nourished to support her health and very active lifestyle. I hope you enjoy this episode! “I ended up on a dude ranch in Arizona. I just wanted to go far away from New York and from home and just do something completely different. I felt like I'd kind of lost a sense of myself in that pursuit of running really fast and high achievement, so I wanted to recalibrate and go somewhere where no one knew me and running didn't matter.” Henna Rustami is a rising star in the running world. Though she describes herself as "the worst runner" on her high school and college teams, she has gone on to thrive on the run, becoming an Ivy League champion (running for Columbia University) and thriving on the New York City competitive running scene. Most recently, Henna won the NYRR Women's Road Mile division at the Fifth Avenue Mile, breaking the tape in four minutes and 45 seconds. And she's thriving off the run, too: Henna graduated from law school earlier this year! On this episode, Henna reflects on her running journey and her childhood, growing up in Long Island as the daughter of refugees from Afghanistan. She talks about her parents' journeys fleeing Afghanistan in the 1980s, and about what it was like growing up in a Muslim family in the wake of 9/11. She talks about finding confidence on the run, about escaping to a dude ranch for six months, and about what her training looks like today as a member of Brooklyn Track Club. Last month, Cara and a group of runners (including The Bachelorette's Zac Clark) completed the Goggins Challenge: They ran four miles every four hours for 48 hours straight. (By the end of the challenge, the group had also raised more than $80,000 for the Release Recovery Foundation.) On Sunday, June 14th, hundreds of New York City runners gathered at the East River Amphitheatre for a two-mile protest run against racial injustice and police brutality in America. The run was organized by Coffey – who was recently a guest on our show and has emerged as one of the city's most vocal activists in the fight against racism. He called on all New York City runners to come together and run together as one community. He initially expected 40 to 60 people to show up but there were hundreds. It was further proof that everyone in the running community will take the time to run together, protest together, listen together and make change together. After the run, there was a speaker series with crew leaders sharing personal stories of their encounters with racism, what it means to be Black in America and how you can help make a change. Coffey granted us permission to share the audio from the conversation. To start off the year, we wanted to introduce you to one of the kindest people me and my new co-host (Ryan Welsh) met in 2019. Henna Rustami's name might be familiar if you’re an Ivy League alum because she was a Heps champion. But before she rose to some prominence on the college scene at Columbia, she grew up on Long Island to an immigrant family who left a war-ravaged Afghanistan in the 1980s. Doug Binder of Dye Stat wrote a great story on her in 2017 as she was setting her sights on some school records during the indoor season: https://www.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=44531&do=news&news_id=467103 Henna is one of the members of the Brooklyn Track Club in New York City and in addition to balancing her workload as a second-year law student, she’s not giving up on lowering those PRs from college. She wants to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Track Trials and serve as an inspiration for girls who look like her since some role models were lacking when she was growing up. In recent weeks, there has been much more of a discussion in regards to having more female coaches in the sport. There are already many out there and deserve recognition for their tremendous work. I wanted to personally share the story of coach Kate Gustafson, who has been helping me with my own training but has been doing remarkable things with athletes of all levels for years. She is a coach with Mile2Marathon and helps with the Brooklyn Track Club in New York City. In addition to being a wonderful mentor and coach, she's a great runner as well. She owns a 2:40:10 marathon personal best. She competed in this year's elite field at the Boston Marathon and finished as the top Canadian woman and 34th overall. Most recently, she placed eighth in a hard-fought effort at the Canadian marathon trials held at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Since this summer, Kate has assisted me and my good friend Ryan Welsh in our marathon training. Ryan, who was featured on this podcast a few episodes ago, joins me to co-host this episode. Kate has got tons of awesome stories about growing up in a small town in Canada, playing Division 1 hockey in college, rediscovering an intense passion for running after college, heading to Kenya to run and train with some of the world’s best distance runners, and finding her calling as a fantastic coach for so many up and coming runners. She’s the ultimate champion for women’s sport and someone Ryan and I definitely trust and look up to. Today on the Extra Mile, we're back at the Javits Center in New York City where I spent some time with my buddy Brian Kendrick as he stepped into his first Marathon Expo for his first-ever marathon run. As I've mentioned previously, this year I trained for the marathon with an awesome group called The Brooklyn Track Club, which was where Brian and I met. If you don't know The Brooklyn Track Club and you're a runner in New York City, I highly recommend you check them out. Training with them was so fun and kept me focused, motivated, and making awesome new running friends like Brian.  I knew that I wanted to interview someone for the podcast who was running their first marathon. I've been wanting to capture that buzzing feeling of stepping into the Expo, getting your first number, and experiencing the energy of the space for the first time. So when I asked if this was anyone in our group's first marathon and Brian raised his hand, I thought, “Great! Mission accomplished.” Turns out Brian has a really interesting story, too. Double-win!  Back in March, Brian was in San Diego for a conference and was jumped outside of his hotel. The attack resulted in a long hospital stay and metal plate in his face. It also resulted in his decision to sign up for the New York City Marathon. Two days after her was released, Brian knew he wanted to run a marathon. And he knew he wanted NYC to be his first.  It was a powerful mental and physical motivator for him- a way for him to rebuild the health of mind, body, and spirit. Additionally, he was connected by a friend to the nonprofit City Harvest which became his cause and an added inspiring force.  Brian is fast. He's not just a strong runner; he is a true contender. In this episode, you'll hear him say a number of times, “I just got chills.” I know just what that feels like and I couldn't be more excited for him and his future in this sport. A big thanks for letting me tag along and for sharing his story and experience with us. Best of luck, Brian!  “It's always comeback season.” -Brian Kendrick #EveryMileMatters Follow Brian Learn more about the Brooklyn Track Club Learn more about City Harvest Learn more about Project Moonshot

"It took a while — a lot of runs, a lot of soul searching — to have this confidence now to just show up and say, 'I've earned this. I deserve to be here. I've put in the work to be in this spot.'" Leigh Anne Sharek is the co-founder of the Brooklyn Track Club, which started as an idea a few years ago and has since grown to nearly 250 members. She's the co-host of the Runners of NYC podcast, she's a sub-five-minute miler, and she's a forensic scientist for New York City's chief medical examiner. (So cool!) On this episode, Leigh Anne talks about going from a 4-hour marathon to a 2:41 marathon, and nabbing an Olympic Trials qualifying time. She talks about running with faster people and what it's like when you realize you're fast, and she shares some oh-so-relatable feelings about showing up to her first group run. Leigh Anne, a former gymnast, has become a well-known face on the NYC running scene, and was named one of New York Road Runners' Runners of the Year last year. So what's it like moving up to the front of the pack and racing alongside the pros? Leigh Anne lets us know, and talks about the great state of the women's running community in New York City right now. “I want to to see how much faster I can get. I know that I can run a faster mile than I have – just based off my 1,500 meter PR alone [3:37.56] since it converts to two seconds faster…Let’s see what a person in New York can do. There’s been plenty of examples and tons of good runners who have lived here over the years so I’m not pioneering anything but let’s see what this is like. I’m not going to do altitude camps. I don’t have a Normatec in my apartment anymore, which I miss dearly. I feel like this happens to people when they retire and they say, ‘I wonder what I could run for a mile right now?’ There’s nothing at stake…” If you were to ask Daniel Winn where he’s from, he’d say New York. That’s not true. He’s originally from Portland, Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon but his heart has always drawn him to New York City. On this episode, you’ll learn a lot about how he went from a walk-on on the Ducks’ track team to very briefly into the indoor mile record holder. He was a finalist and placed 8th at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials 1,500 meter final. He currently trains with the Brooklyn Track Club. In addition to his love for running, Daniel is also a comedy writer and overall great guy. With plenty of funny stories to share, it’s easy to see how we ended up with the longest episode of Runners of NYC yet. I was joined by four exemplary leaders in the running community: Mary Wittenberg, former NYRR and Virgin Sport president and CEO; Christine Burke, VP of Strategic Partnerships and Runner Products at NYRR; Leigh Anne Sharek, co-founder of Brooklyn Track Club; and Carly Gill, a 2:47 marathoner and one of the women behind Runner Braids. These women candidly shared their stories of success, failure, and what it's like to feel shaken to your core or rattled with insecurity. “My friend, Jordan, actually commented my Instagram when I announced I wasn’t running the marathon. He said, ‘The comeback is greater than the setback.’ It really became a mantra for me for that whole year. My mantra when I was in the training was ‘Come back stronger’ and I did. It wasn’t just running. It was life.” Zac Price joins the Runners of NYC Podcast to share his story of how he found running late in his life and has "become a better person mentally and physically" as a result. We dive into how the loss of a friend got him into racing and the philanthropic aspect of running. How a toxic relationship led him to discover the Project Moonshot and training for the New York City Marathon. However, Zac also shares how injuries prevented him from making that first marathon happen but still managed to prove that the comeback is greater than the setback. Real Estate REality Check | Real Estate & Business Career Success Education and Training

Introduction: Today’s guest is one of CBRE’s rising stars, namely Zachary Price. Zac, who is a Vice President in their Global Advisory & Transaction Services group, is responsible for business development and transaction implementation on behalf of clients he secured, as well as several of CBRE’s global and prominent regional corporate clients. Zac, who possesses a tireless work ethic, was recognized a few years ago by the Commercial Observer as one of their “30 Under 30” elite group of up-and-comers in NYC commercial real estate. When he is not channeling Bruce Springsteen’s song “Out in the Street” by pounding the pavement to make a difference for his clients, he is busy piggybacking on Bruce’s mantra of “Born to Run,” as his passion for life extends to the manner in which he wind sprints in the NYC Marathon, with a time that approaches breaking the 3-hour mark.   Episode Notes: At 2:21, Zac discusses the importance of leaving a great first impression. At 3:25, Price talks about the industry specific market groups at CBRE, and how he goes about accumulating knowledge through these groups. At 4:34, he shares beginning his real estate career at Cushman Wakefield in 2007 on Long Island, and his path to joining CBRE in their downtown New York City office. At 6:20, Zac notes that the most important facet in his life is that of giving back and helping others. At 7:02, Price informs us that he is running in the Chicago Marathon in October. At 7:40, he dives into his negotiating style and the “iceberg.” At 9:06, Zac touches upon how he builds trust and navigates a deal with his clients. At 9:59, Price mentions that he is a big believer in a team structure, and why one must prioritize by separating what is to “do” from what is “due.” At 11:59, he speaks about how he is continually tapping into the different resources within the various service lines at CBRE. At 13:32, Zac talks about the most rewarding words a client has told him. At 15:29, Price states that he is locked in 24/7 to this business, but always creates time to reset the mind. At 16:55, he shares that he likes the method of polite persistence in following up with a prospective client. At 17:50, Zac notes that downturns create opportunity, and feels that one must learn to adapt to the current conditions in the marketplace. At 22:02, Price discusses persistently calling and canvassing years in advance of a lease expiring in the hopes of scoring a client. At 24:50, he informs us of his thoughts pertaining to social media, and that he scored one of his best meetings off of LinkedIn. At 26:56, Zac stresses that one must recognize when they don’t know the answer, and find the expert who does. At 29:22, Larry Haber asks Zac a hypothetical “what would you do in this situation” type of question. At 33:34, Price believes that if one is exploring the office leasing arena, one needs to be at a firm with a large platform with a great depth of resources. At 35:38, he shares that running has changed his life for the better, and that he met his new best friends through Brooklyn Track Club. At 38:47, Zac Price closes the podcast with a message on work-life balance, and having fun with it (it’s just real estate).
