We've taken out the obvious choice for sports cities in Los Angeles, New York, Boston and Chicago and given you a few new places to add to your must-see travel list. DENVER With over 300 days of sunshine, Denver is an obvious choice. Sure they have the Broncos (NFL – National Football League), Nuggets (NBA – National Basketball Association), Avalanche (NHL – National Hockey League) and Rockies (MLB – Major League Baseball) but did you know they have over 150 breweries in the metro area? You can take in a concert at the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre if you're not into sports or venture into the mountains for some hiking, skiing or our favorite, après-ski. SEATTLE If the Pike's Place Market area, the original Starbucks or taking in the views from the top of the Space Needle isn't enough to drive you to check out Seattle, how about a little sports action? Seattle is the home to the newest NHL team, the Seattle Kraken, that will begin their inaugural season this fall. If hockey isn't your thing, they have the Seattle Seahawks (NFL), Storm (WNBA - Women's National Basketball Association), Sounders (MLS – Major League Soccer), OL Reign (NWSL – National Women's Soccer League) and the Mariners (MLB). The Mariners have the longest playoff drought in baseball, so maybe you can bring them some good luck (or at least enjoy the outdoors with a cold beer and some popcorn). NASHVILLE If Nashville is on your travel list, you're not the only one. The music city ranks high on the list of most-desired domestic destinations in 2021. If you like football, food and music – you're in luck. You can catch a Tennessee Titans (NFL) game and then wander over to the Country Music Hall of Fame or to Lower Broadway to take in some of the best live music you've ever heard. The city is booming, with over 22 new restaurants opening thus far in 2021, which will be great to grab a bite before a Predators (NHL) or SC (MLS) game. LAS VEGAS The newest blossoming sports city also happens to be the entertainment capital of the world. So if you're not into catching a Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) or Aces (WNBA) game or checking out the Las Vegas Raiders (NFL) in their brand new stadium, there are plenty of options of things to do. While we all know the Las Vegas Strip is what keeps people coming back to Vegas, did you know that there's excellent hiking at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and a world-class Mob Museum with a speakeasy in the basement? Oh, and they have 280 non-stop passenger flights scheduled to 152 destinations in nine countries, so it's easy to get there. TAMPA BAY While you may think of the beaches, Tampa Bay has cemented its status as an elite sports city over the past few years. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by Tom Brady, won the Super Bowl (NFL) in 2021. Not to be outdone, the Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) won back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships. The Rays (MLB) were World Series runners-up in 2020, and the Toronto Raptors (NBA) called Tampa home during COVID because they were prohibited from traveling in and out of Canada.

John Paul Jones is perhaps America's best-known naval commander. Blessed with a strategic mind and the bravado to attack British ships off the American coastline, he contributed greatly to America's independence. He was known for his dogged determination to beat the odds – a trait for which he has been rewarded with a seven-word quote often attributed to him, but more likely distilled – by historians – from his actual words. But it doesn't matter, and it's all explained in the following story. Then, after the Revolutionary War, America's Navy was disbanded due to a lack of funds, and Jones ended up in France where he died – in a hotel room – alone – at the age of forty-five. Stories from History's Dust Bin is a 3-volume set of historical short stories. These are the nuggets of gold that had fallen by the wayside… the little known and unusual. Many of these gems were destined to be forever lost until they were collected, dusted off and brought back to life by author Wayne Winterton. Each podcast episode features one of over 450 short stories from either Winterton's Award-Winning Stories from Dust Bin series* or the companion volume, From Ace to Zamboni: 101 More Dust Bin Stories, as narrated by either the author or his son, William, or daughter, Jana. This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. Our seventieth Secretary of State is arguably the best in our nation’s history. Certainly, few, if any, can match Mike Pompeo’s brilliance, his clarity about America’s vital role in the world and his courage in countering the dangers we face internationally. Consider two examples of such leadership just this week: Yesterday, Mr. Pompeo teamed up with a former American hostage in Iran to reject any reversion to a policy of appeasement towards Tehran’s mullahs. Thanks to the Iranian regime’s strategic alliance with Al Qaeda, doing otherwise would effectively strengthen not just one, but two, of our most dangerous enemies. The day before, Secretary Pompeo gave some tough love about American exceptionalism to people charged with promoting it to the world – employees of the Voice of America. That mission has been neglected for too long and must be made a priority for Team Biden. This is Frank Gaffney.

It was back in January 2020 during the presidential primary season, pre-COVID, and in a discussion in one of my classes, a student, asked, “why are the candidates we get to choose for president so dumb, old, and pathetic?” Yes, the question was blunt, a bit over-simplistic, and rude. Yet, the tone of this young man's voice was one of real frustration many of us feel about our choice of candidates. There is a lack of intelligence, critical thinking, communication, leadership, ethics, and morals. Some candidates lack all of these traits and some a combination of any of the above from both political parties. We have intelligent, high-caliber people serving in all kinds of capacities in this country; yet, they avoid politics like the plague, and instead we are left with a gaggle of partisan hacks who all too often talk and behave more like school-children than leaders of our nation. The podcast discusses the American political class, what happened to our politicians, and why, we are so often disappointed with our choices.

Mogge's got some beef with the list of America's Best Sleuths as it appears on the Murder She Wrote DVD box set special features (seriously, why is Sherlock Holmes on this list), so the Shipple Dips hash it out. Then, there's a new movie about the ACLU's non-stop fights against the Trump administration coming out today, and that movie is called "The Fight." That's justification enough to talk about the Fist and Ships of our favorite fightin' ships, right? RIGHT. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Freedom Wins One in Troy- A little NY town provides safety for a runaway slave. On April 27th, 1850, the Vigilante Committee in Troy, New York, prevented a Sheriff and a Slave Catcher from extraditing one of their own, a runaway slave named Charles Nalle, who had made his escape north in 1848 through the Underground Railway to what he hoped was freedom and the chance for a new life. Blacks and whites combined in a number of dangerous efforts to free Nalle that day, and they succeeded in doing so, scoring one small step for freedom in a turbulent time for America. The citizens of Troy later raised today's equivalent of $14,000 to buy Nalle's freedom. Keranen, Malone, Rule: "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" | Steve Hargadon | Oct 7 2009 by Steve Hargadon
How many times have you wanted to start over? How many times have you started thinking about the possibilities only to follow them up with the thought, "but it's too late in my life to do this"? If you're human, then you've probably had this discussion with yourself a million different times, and that's okay, we all have those moments. However, even though you may feel like it's too late to start over, it doesn't mean that it is. Today's guest, Peter Glatz is essentially the holy grail when it comes to that myth. At 60 years old, Peter left his dentistry career of over 40 years in order to pursue cooking. He began his journey into the culinary world by reaching out to well-known chefs offering to work for free! (Who says you have to immediately start making money off of something you love? Just start!). Listen to how his journey led him to eventually landing a dream job as a link cook at Nonesuch in Oklahoma City, Bon Appetit's 2018 Best Restaurant in America. Despite working long, 12 hour days at a physically taxing job, Peter has never been happier. I love so many things about his story. There are so many people who count themselves out when they reach a certain age because they believe it's too late for them to pivot their path. But Peter's story is really a testament to the fact that there is always time to try something new! Not only that, but he didn't let his lack of formal experience stop him from feeling confident enough to reach out to those well-known chefs. There are just so, so many wonderful lessons to learn from Peter and his journey. Here is what we chat about in this episode: How it's never too late to start over. How if you want something different you should do something about it. Why you should create a vision and then take action. And so much more!
