Episode 44 is a conversation with Los Angeles based writer, stand-up comic, competitive kettle-bell athlete and old school East Bay punk (via Arkansas) Bucky Sinister. The conversation begins by revisiting a subject explored in prior episodes, the late 80's / early 90's SF Henry Rollins-doppelganger Mark Sperry, who was a friend of his in that period. He offers insight and shares his admiration for Sperry. The two get into Bucky's biography, his discovery of punk rock, his move from Arkansas to California in the 80's and his near fatal struggle with drugs and alcohol during his days crashing in the punk houses of the east bay. He shares his story of recovery and the revelation of his late life diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. He tells us how throughout his life writing stories and performing comedy and poetry has been not only an essential steam-valve release of creative self expression but also a means of finding community and a sense of belonging. He describes how inspiring it was to arrive in the bay area just as the emerging ‘spoken word' movement associated with the punk scene was flowering. Jason and Bucky also talk at length about a specific project he has undertaken to compile an oral history of beloved SF musician, the late Lance Hahn and his very prolific band J Church. Lance died of a congenital heart disorder in 2007 but his memory lives on in all who knew him. Thanks for listening! BIG thank you to all supporters! Generation X writer Neal Pollack thought he had it all: a good writing career, a strong marriage, even a lucrative 3-day run on "Jeopardy"! That brought him national attention. Like many in his generation, he also smoked a lot of marijuana. He had discovered that food, music and even his beloved yoga was much better when he smoked. In 2014, as several states in the country legalized pot, Pollack scored a writing gig for a marijuana site that provided free weed. He saw his drug use as harmless and joked about it often in his writing. But as more states, including California, began to legalize the drug, Pollack's life began to fall apart, in part because of his drug use. Both of his parents died and he soon found himself spiraling out of control, sometimes in public. By 2018, Pollack admitted publicly he had a marijuana addiction and set about to conquer it, through honesty . . . and humor. Pollack's new book, Pothead, is about coming to terms with his marijuana problems just as the country increased its recreational availability. The book is a cautionary and timely tale for those who think the drug isn't dangerous and can't cause serious addictive problems. Join us for a special evening program as Pollack discusses his story with Los Angeles novelist Bucky Sinister. Note: This program contains Explicit language Learn more about your ad choices. Let's just say it has to do with a tattoo of hers he discovered in an intimate moment.   Want to know what in God's name that means? You're going to have to listen.

His journalism, film reviews, and short stories have appeared on The Rumpus, The Bold Italic, and a number of other online and print publications. This episode is from one of those live shows and in this story, he talks about being terrified of small talk but not remotely scared to score drugs from strangers or get in fights. Once you leave the family homestead and head out into the world of shared flats and apartments, there's an excellent chance you'll live with slobs or psychopaths of various stripes. This week on the Nest of Vipers, our fundits share stories of sketchy housemates and sketchier neighborhoods. We'll hear tales of colorful characters like Laotian Mafia members, speakeasy proprietors, and thieving hoods from the mean streets of West Philadelphia, as well as wife beaters, drug dealers and bottle throwers from San Francisco's Western Addition. We'll also hear about college co-eds trying to have sex in crowded dorm rooms, and a touching tale of a loveable roommate with an ungodly singing voice and Aspergers Syndrome. Our guests include Soctt Beiben (Lost Film Festival), Alison Faith Levy (musician, The Sippy Cups), Bucky Sinister (writer, All Blacked Out and Nowhere To Go. Hosted by filmmaker Danny Plotnick.
