Earlier this month Lost Cause Brewing, the independent brewery, founded in 2024 by Vik and Colin Stronge, completed a crowdfunding campaign help to bring beer production home to Castleford. So what better time to hear from one of the excellent brewery's founders. Whie Lost Cause Brewing might be new, its founders are no strangers to making great beer. Head brewer Colin Stronge has spent over 20 years crafting beers at some of the UK's most celebrated breweries, including Marble Beers, Buxton Brewery, Northern Monk, Black Isle, and Salt Beer Factory. His beers have poured at the most prestigious craft beer festivals around the world, earning him Brewer of the Year 2022 at our Brewers Choice Awards as well as a dedicated following among beer enthusiasts. And last year we were thrilled that Colin used our Brewers Lectures at the excellent Wiper and True in Bristol to showcase these debut Lost Cause beers for the first time. During his talk, Colin talked us through his career to-date. But more importantly, he outlines his goals for Lost Cause Brewing Co and why sometimes you need a little bit of discomfort to give you that push in life.
Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
When Buxton Brewery announced it had gone into administration, shockwaves could be felt across the craft beer community. As a pillar of the UK craft beer scene since 2009, setting benchmarks for quality and innovation with beers like Axe Edge, it was unthinkable that a brewery with such a solid reputation could be amongst the casualties of the current economic climate. However, no business is immune, and Buxton Brewery, it appeared, was no exception. After facing the challenges of the pandemic and navigating a pre-pack administration in 2023, the brewery is now under new ownership and back on stable ground. In this episode, Nick travels to the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District to chat with Dominic Metcalfe, Managing Director of Buxton Brewery, in their stunning taproom opposite the brewhouse. Together, they explore the tough realities of running a brewery in today's climate, the impact of supermarket sales on craft beer, and how Buxton Brewery is forging a path forward in an ever-changing market.Recorded in September 2024, this candid conversation reveals the complexities of pre-pack administrations, the pressures of the brewing industry, and the enduring passion for quality beer that defines Buxton Brewery.THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY:Charles Faram & Co (charlesfaram.com)Supplying hops for over 150 years, Charles Faram offers a vast range of nitrogen-flushed hop varieties from the UK, Europe, New Zealand, and the USA.Crisp Malting Group (crispmalt.com)Since 1870, Crisp has blended tradition with innovation, producing malts like Chevallier Heritage and Clear Choice Malt.FOLLOW HOP FORWARDhopforward.beer | LinkedIn | BlueSky | Instagram
Episode 58 was recorded at The Green Man Art Gallery in the Buxton Fringe on 20th July 2024. The panellists were Kevin Hudson and Scott Allsop. The host was Richard Pulsford. As usual we had a varied list of On This Day topics. It was 55 years since Apollo 11 landed on the moon (20/07/1969). It was the birth date of Cornelia Zangheri Bandi, born (20/07/1664), who died of apparent spontaneous human combustion, and Dickens used this as a case study for one of his famous novels. It was also the anniversary of the day when milk was gathered to make The Cheshire Mammoth Cheese (20/07/1801) in the US. This resulted in a novel use for the word 'mammoth'. 20th July was also International Chess Day. The International Chess Federation was founded 100 years previously (20/07/1924), the last day of the first unofficial Chess Olympiad. The first Ford Motor Company car was shipped on this date (20/07/1903) so we had to have some quotes from Mr Ford. Some of the Buxton topics included Poole's Cavern, Dove Holes and a Buxton Brewery beer quiz.

When you think of these beers, the first country that springs to mind is Belgium, not England. But perhaps it's time to think again, as this style has long (if not strong) roots in the UK. Our first guest is Jeremy Stull, Head of Barrels & Blending Buxton Brewery, who shares his international perspective on the wild side of brewing. Secondly, Jan from Butchers Tears gives a practical lesson in British barrel-aging history via their new version of a classic English beer: Aruspex, an Old Burton Ale. Is there any other country quite as revered in the world of beer as Belgium? While many start their continental beer journey in their local supermarket with commercialised brands such as Leffe and Duvel, it’s usually only a matter of time before they’re booking Eurostar tickets to Bruge, taking a pilgrimage to Brasserie d'Orval, before visiting the Lamic mecca:
Is a vegan diet healthier than a regular diet? This is a question that I've really struggled with over the years. On the surface, it seems quite straightforward. Vegan dieters are shown to live longer, have fewer health issues, and are generally fitter and leaner than people who follow regular diets. But does that mean that a vegan diet is actually healthier than a regular diet? Or is it just that people who are healthier and more conscious of their fitness are more likely to be drawn to a vegan lifestyle? Episode two of Beer n Biceps' second series tackles this exact question. Is a Vegan Diet Healthier Than a Regular Diet? It depends on how you define a regular diet. It is difficult to define a "regular diet". If you live in the Mediterranean, then your idea of a regular diet is going to be a lot different to someone living beside a KFC in Texas. The problem is that the vegan diet is often compared to a BAD omnivore diet. Of course, it is going to be healthier! But what if you compared it to the ideal omnivore diet? The results would be different. Vegan diets are naturally low in l-carnitine, creatine, and B-vitamins. While the ideal omnivore diet is going to be packed with them. The most healthy diet is often cited as being the Mediterranean diet. But it is really the Mediterranean lifestyle that is truly healthy. You could eat the healthiest diet imaginable. But if you are breathing in pollution, not exercising at all, and you live a very stressful life then you are NOT healthy. I go into a lot more detail about this in the podcast. My opinion is that vegan diets can be healthy, particularly compared with a bad omnivore diet. But a good omnivore diet is healthier than a good vegan diet because there is more variety. Matters of Perspective IPA by Buxton Brewery I've written about Buxton Brewery before, in my article on the Yellow Belly Saga. It is well worth a read if you enjoy petty arguments and beer-related drama. What that article does not really convey is how much I love their beer. Matters of Perspective is a 6.6% IPA that is very hoppy. Perhaps too hoppy for my taste, but a seriously good IPA nonetheless. I'd say that it reminds me of an American IPA, perhaps a West Coast style? Check out my article on XPA beer or on NEIPA if you want a more detailed look at the differing pale ale styles. What Else to Look For in the Podcast I also talk about what makes a good deadlift warm-up and give my honest opinion on squat shoes (they work, but not for everyone). So give it a listen, and let me know what you think. Also, if you have any questions that you want answered on the show then please comment below. Or call me a bellend. You do you.
