Hi and Welcome to the latest episode of the True Hauntings Podcast. In this episode we go back the the days of mobsters, gangs, violence and corruption. What's has changed you may well ask?!!and Happy Valentine's Day Lovers - we picked this episode's topic just for you!The St. Valentine's Day Massacre stunned the world back in 1929 when news broke out about a brutal mass murder on Chicago's North Side.During that time Chicago's streets were dominated by gang conflicts, with notorious mob boss Al Capone working to grab more power, by eliminating rivals involved in bootlegging, gambling, and prostitution. This wave of violence reached a gruesome peak on February 14, 1929, in a garage on the city's North Side. Seven men linked to Irish gangster George “Bugs” Moran, one of Capone's long-standing adversaries, were gunned down by men disguised as police officers.Could this act of violence leave an imprint so heavy that it is still felt almost 100 years later? We look at Valentine's Day from a paranormal perspective. There seems to be a trail of ghosts and spooky activity that haunt the sites associated with the February 14th massacre in Chicago.Let's look into some of the history and the ghost stories and experiences people have had in the places where it happened and see if we can separate fact from fiction.Anne and Renata hope that you enjoy this episode and that you subscribe to our podcast.Consider supporting our work by buying us a "cup of coffee" https://www.buymeacoffee.com/anneandrenataORbecome a Grand Poobah Patreon supporter, and join our inner circle of craziness!https://www.patreon.com/anneandrenataOur Patreons get to hear all of the bloopers as well as extra lives on a private Patreon page.Join us on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/TrueHauntingsPodcastPlease subscribe to our YouTube Channel as we are wanting to get more views and engagement and check out our travel videos Frightfully Good Misadventures - we are adding new episodes of some of our latest adventures every week. Also Follow Anne and Renata:Facebook: @AnneAndRenataInstagram: @AnneAndRenataYouTube: @AnneAndRenataTikTok: @AnneAndRenataWe pass on our HUGE THANK YOU for listening and following. We could not do this without you.#anneandrenata #ghosts #hauntings #paranormalpodcast #frightfullygood #FrightfullyGood #HauntedHolidays #diaryofaghosthunter #poltergeist #ghostbusters #stvalentinesday #stvalentinesdaymassacre #alcapone #chicagomobsters #deathsonstvalentinesday #killingsonstvalentinesday #gangwarefare #hauntedchicago #roaring20s #hauntedpodcasts #podcastinglife #letsmakethiswork #podcastsaboutghosts #podcastsabouthauntedsites Hosted on Acast. For the fifth day of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas, we are headed north to Anchorage, Alaska, where we meet 52-year-old Mindy Schloss. Mindy had moved to Anchorage back in the 1980s by accident. Mindy came for a visit and never left. Mindy worked as a nurse practitioner in Fairbanks' psychiatric department. The commute from Anchorage to Fairbanks was a long one-hour flight, but Mindy had to make the trip twice a month. Her good friend Gerri would care for her cat Willy while she was gone working. The friends would meet up before Mindy left for work, so when Gerri didn't hear from Mindy, she called and left a message with Mindy checking in, but Mindy did not return the call, which was unlike Mindy. “Maybe she is just busy' her friend thought. Mindy's other friend, Bob Conway, her on-again and off-again boyfriend, reached out to Mindy as well, and when he could not leave a voicemail due to a full mailbox, he knew something was wrong. Bob called Gerri to inquire if she had heard from Mindy. When Gerri said no, they both felt something was wrong. The suspected killer of the UnitedHealthcare CEO has been crowned a hero by many on social media. On this week's On the Media, what the fandom reveals, and what the coverage of it has missed. Plus, tune in to part two of The Harvard Plan. Hear how plagiarism allegations at the university exploded into a toxic discourse about DEI and “diversity hires.”[01:00] Hosts Brooke Gladstone and Micah Loewinger examine how the suspected killer of the UnitedHealthcare CEO became an internet sensation, what the spectacle itself reveals, and the gulf between the reactions on TikTok and in mainstream media. [15:29] Reporter Ilya Marritz, in part two of this collaboration with WNYC's On The Media, Harvard's first Black president Claudine Gay is accused of academic plagiarism, just days after giving testimony to Congress. The drip-drip of new allegations keeps the story in the headlines. It also reinforces critics' allegation that Gay is a “diversity hire,” unworthy of the job. We hear from two of the writers who broke that news, and from a defender of Harvard's diversity efforts.Check out our collaboration with the Boston Globe here. The courtroom was heavy with tension as Circuit Court Judge Mathew Whyte delivered the sentence that would define the fate of thirty-three-year-old Ashley Benefield: twenty years in prison. Benefield, a former ballerina once gracing the stage with elegance, now stood stoic as the hammer of justice came down. Her crime? The fatal shooting of her estranged husband, Doug Benefield, at her Florida home on a late September evening in 2020. Judge Whyte's words echoed through the courtroom as he acknowledged Ashley's claims of duress and remorse, yet firmly denied a lighter punishment. The maximum sentence was thirty years; twenty would suffice. The sentence, however, only served as the closing act in a trial filled with narratives that clashed like cymbals, leaving no corner of the courtroom untouched by controversy. Doug Benefield's daughter, Eva, broke the solemn silence with a victim impact statement that felt less like closure and more like confrontation. “I've waited so long to speak to her, face to face,” Eva declared, her voice trembling with restrained emotion. Her final words were pointed, a blend of hope and resignation: “I hope prison serves her well.” Ashley remained expressionless. It was the same detached demeanor she had displayed throughout the trial—an enigma to some, a calculated coldness to others. Outside the courtroom, Doug Benefield's relatives were measured in their response, supporting the sentence but bristling at the judge's assertion that Ashley had shown remorse. The trial itself had been a six-day whirlwind of accusations, counterclaims, and revelations. Prosecutors painted Ashley as a manipulative figure who shot her husband in an attempt to win a custody battle "at all costs." Her defense team countered with a narrative of desperation—a woman allegedly trapped in a cycle of abuse, taking action when she feared for her life. Central to Ashley's defense was her claim that Doug had been controlling and abusive, a characterization that the prosecution vehemently contested. Physical evidence at the scene, they argued, failed to corroborate her story of a violent altercation leading up to the shooting. Instead, it suggested something more calculated. While the jury ultimately acquitted Ashley of second-degree murder, they convicted her of the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter, leaving the question of her true motivations hanging like an unanswered note. Yet the drama didn't end with the verdict. Allegations of juror misconduct cast a shadow over the trial's integrity. Reports surfaced that a juror had a history eerily similar to the prosecution's theory of the case: a contentious custody dispute involving allegations of abuse. The defense argued this history should have disqualified the juror, yet the claim was only brought to light after the verdict was rendered. Even more bizarre were whispers of a person known online as “That Hoodie Guy,” who allegedly leaked details of jury deliberations in real-time, using a cellphone smuggled into the jury room. Judge Whyte dismissed these claims after interviewing the jurors, finding no evidence of impropriety. Still, the defense's failure to ask follow-up questions during jury selection hung over the proceedings like a missed cue in a critical act. As the courtroom emptied, the unanswered questions lingered. Was Ashley Benefield a victim pushed to the brink, or was she a calculated figure who weaponized her allegations to secure custody of her child? And what does this case say about the cracks in a system meant to deliver impartial justice? As Ashley Benefield's sentencing reverberated through the courtroom, one presence loomed larger than any words spoken that day: the couple's young child. The courtroom drama, the accusations of abuse, the fiery legal battles—all of it culminated in a tragic reality for a child left to navigate life without their father and with their mother behind bars. In the months leading up to the fatal altercation, Ashley and Doug's custody battle had been bitter, with allegations flying in both directions. Ashley accused Doug of abuse, seeking legal protection through injunctions that were ultimately denied for lack of credible evidence. Doug, for his part, contended with the strain of defending his character while continuing to fight for his child's well-being. The courtroom, once a battleground for their parental rights, became a stage for the ultimate fracture in their family. Now, with Doug gone and Ashley sentenced to twenty years in prison, the child's future remains uncertain. Custody proceedings will determine who steps into the parental void, but no ruling can erase the trauma of what has transpired. The Benefield family, while relieved at the sentencing, must now grapple with the reality of raising Doug's child in the shadow of his violent death. The child's role in the case was a silent one, yet it was central to the motivations of both parents. For Ashley, the allegations of abuse included claims that Doug had endangered their child—claims dismissed in court. For Doug, fighting to maintain his rights as a father was reportedly his primary focus in the months leading to his death. As the legal system shifts its attention to the child's welfare, larger questions emerge. How does a system designed to prioritize the best interests of the child navigate such profound familial conflict? And, perhaps most hauntingly, how does a child grow up carrying the weight of a tragedy they had no part in creating? That's all for now. We'll keep digging and getting you the facts. If humans were cold-blooded, we'd rely on the environment to control our body temperature, just like reptiles do! On chilly days, we'd need to bask in the sun to warm up and be active, but on super-hot days, we'd have to find shade or cool off in water to avoid overheating. Our energy needs would drop because cold-blooded creatures don't burn calories to stay warm, so maybe fewer snacks—but way more naps! Life would be slower and more tied to the weather, and extreme climates might be tough for survival. Fancy heated houses or cooling systems might not matter much anymore; we'd just adapt to our surroundings. On the bright side, no more sweating or shivering—just soaking up the vibes of the weather! #brightside Animation is created by Bright Side. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music from TheSoul Sound: https://thesoul-sound.com/ Listen to Bright Side on: Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0hUkPxD... It was at first ruled as a suicide, but the case was soon re-opened and suspicion fell on his fiance, Grete Beier. Unpeel the layers of this disturbing case by diving into a murderer's mind with us. In this episode, we explore the shocking case of Kentucky Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines, who allegedly shot and killed his longtime friend, Judge Kevin Mullins, in the judge's courthouse chambers. Constable Johnnie Raymond “Bill” Garsee was shot dead in front of his Moscow, Texas barn in April of 1984. Originally from San Augustine, Bill, his wife, and three children had settled down in the small town three decades before. Being a huge name on the rodeo circuit in a rodeo town like Moscow, locals warmly welcomed Bill and his family. As the years went on, he became Precinct 3 Constable and garnered the respect and friendship of everyone. So, when he was gunned down in cold-blood as a 61-year-old man in 1984, the Polk County Sheriff's Office was left baffled. They had theories but could get none to stick. If you have any information about the murder of Johnnie Raymond “Bill” Garsee, please contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at (936) 327-6810.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.Search @gonecoldpodcast at all or just click linknbio.com/gonecoldpodcastSources: The Light and Champion, The Polk County Enterprise, The Tyler Morning Telegraph, and The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. #JusticeForBillGarsee #MoscowTX #PolkCountyTX #Texas #TX #TrueCrime #TexasTrueCrime #TrueCrimePodcast #Podcast #Unsolved #GoneCold #GoneColdPodcast #UnsolvedMysteries #TrueCrime #Disappeared #Vanished #MissingPerson #Missing #Homicide #UnsolvedMurder #ColdCase #CrimeStories #PodcastRecommendations #SerialKiller #TrueCrimeCommunity #CrimeJunkie #MysteryPodcast #TrueCrimeObsessed #CrimeDocs #InvestigationDiscovery #PodcastAddict #TrueCrimeFan #CriminalJustice #ForensicFiles #TrueCrimeAddict #TrueCrimeLovers #CrimeScene #PodcastLifeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gone-cold-texas-true-crime--3203003/support.

In Maricopa, Arizona, a strange & cold blooded murder, heard over a phone call, a very odd alibi, and much stupidity all stem from a dating app match that lead to a romance, that seemed destined for greatness. But cracks soon began to appear, when one one the couple accused the other of cheating, with their own sibling. A break up seemed to be the answer, until a kidnapped dog, and attempted arson got the murder ball rolling!!Along the way, we find out that Nelly will perform at any festival there is, that biting that causes cuts that need stitches is not a form of affection, and that "borrowing" a newborn baby to fool a DNA test is pretty insane!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports!
