It's embracing your inner greatness. · Being authentic is a core part of being unlocked. “We remove the extraneous, the layering of our conditioning and defenses, and the ways that we have been untrue to who we really are until we find what is authentic within us - an authenticity that is always there, waiting to be revealed.” · Kobe Bryant once said of George Mumford: “George helped me to be neither distracted or focused, rigid or flexible, passive or aggressive. I learned to just be.” · George's big break was coming on the heels of the Lakers' third NBA championship in a row when coach Phil Jackson asked George to help the team deal with the stress and pressure brought on by their success. · 90% of long term happiness is dependent upon how the brain interprets our experience. · One of the distinguishing characteristics of the best athletes in the world is they're very coachable. They are lifelong learners, always looking to get an edge. · If you want to be in flow, you have to have a fully integrated self. Your body, your mind, your heart, and your soul have to be in unison and harmony. Growing up as the 10th of 13 siblings, George Mumford always felt sensitive to the needs of others, whether it was his brothers and sisters or the homeless people he'd pass when walking to and from school. It was the same emotional intelligence that would one day serve him well when guiding the mental game of Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and Kobe Bryant's LA Lakers. But first he had to pass through some trying times. While basketball offered an oasis from his challenging upbringing, George started drinking and using drugs at age 14. He became good enough on the blacktop to target a walk-on spot at UMass Amherst, where his roommate Julius Erving was becoming a star. But a bad ankle injury destroyed this hoop dream and George sank deeper into addiction to try and cope. He finished his degree and put his talent for numbers to good use in financial management, but had to wear long sleeves to hide the track marks on his arm. A friend convinced him to come to an AA meeting, which led to a long process of getting clean that involved meditation. His instructor challenged him to teach and he found his passion, starting a mindfulness program for prison inmates and inner city residents. After being introduced to Phil Jackson through their mutual friend, Geoge started working with the Chicago Bulls. He stayed with them through their second three-peat, and then followed Phil to the Lakers, who won their own three championships with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. George continues to consult with pro teams, equip underprivileged kids and adults, and is the author of The Mindful Athlete and Unlocked. In this episode, George shares:What the Bulls' mindset was like after Michael Jordan retired to play baseball and how he got Jordan to buy into the mental game when he came back for another three-peat How Jordan responded to missing the potential title-winning shot in Game 5 of the 1998 NBA FinalsWhy Kobe and MJ were the best meditation students he's had, and Kobe was a kindred soulHow drive, passion, and curiosity are at the heart of the Mamba MentalityWhy unlocking your masterpiece within starts with no longer hiding out and being double-mindedHow to find stillness in the eye of the hurricane on the court and in lifeWhy the same principles he followed in rehab carry over into elite performanceHow he helps people find their true selves and share their gifts with the worldTo tap into all of George's mindset resources, visit his website, georgemumford.com. In this episode I review George Mumford's book the Mindful Athlete. After experiencing a variety of hardships through the early part of his life Mumford found mindfulness and eventually became a mindfulness expert earning his Masters degree in the field. Mumford went on to help thousands of inmates as well as practice in his preferred clients professional athletes including the Chicago Bulls under Phil Jackson and the Michael Jordan era. Over time Mumford developed the concept of the five superpowers:- mindfulness-concentration-insight-right effort-trustThese superpowers are interconnected and work togetherIf your mind is filled with distracting emotions you lose your flow. Some of us are training for marathons and triathlons. We are committed to our training in order to achieve the results that we want. Yet, some of the best coaches will confirm that training of the mind is as important as training of the body. And mindfulness can be very handy. In this meditation practice we will tap into training attention by paying attention to the breath. “It's only in the present moment that you can cultivate conscious flow in your life, achieve optimal levels of performance, and experience that exalted place called flow.”- George Mumford
Episode Notes"It doesn't matter what you do in this moment. It's all about everything that we put together this entire season. We don't have to have, you know, this "A" workout. You can have a bunch of "B" workouts put together. And again, the accumulation of all those workouts is going to end up with a really great result."Today's guest is Emma Bates, elite marathoner for the USA and one of the three U.S. women's marathoners competing at the upcoming World Championships. Emma said one of the coolest things we've heard anyone say on this podcast. She said we all need to learn how to “dance with discomfort.” In other words, if you want to reach your potential in anything you're pursuing, you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. You have to make “discomfort” your go-to dance partner. By embracing this notion, Emma was able to place 2nd at the 2021 Chicago Marathon back in October. On that day, she became one of the 10 fastest female marathoners in US history! Make no mistake about it, it wasn't an easy journey for her to achieve this milestone. What's really cool is she admits she had to make adjustments to her circumstances to finally experience the successes she's now having. “Within your mind, body and soul YOU have an untapped potential that wants to be unleashed. It calls to you in your dreams and whispers to you when your mind goes silent. It is relentless because it knows you are capable of more than you give yourself credit for” (George Mumford) George Mumford used his insights into pain, mindfulness and performance to enrich the careers of athletes including Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. George then realised that his ideas could help people “from locker rooms to board rooms, Yale to jail”, and so took his work beyond the sporting arena, including writing a book, The Mindful Athlete. In this episode, Andrew and George discuss mindfulness, George's journey through pain and addiction, and George's five superpowers: ⚡️Mindfulness ⚡️Concentration ⚡️Insight ⚡️Right Effort ⚡️Trust Follow Up Join our Supporters Club to access exclusive behind-the-scenes content, fan requests and the chance to ask Andrew your own questions. This started with gaining a diploma in Positive Psychology and a more focused effort into the practice of Mindfulness, following the teachings of well-known Mindfulness coach George Mumford. After a successful stint playing club Hockey in Germany and finding a healthy balance outside of the sport, helped Rachel re-ignite the passion for Hockey and her desire to represent New Zealand again. She also became inspired to start sharing her knowledge and launched “The Happy Athlete”, a social media platform and podcast where she brings tools for young athletes she wished she had learnt earlier, on how to deal with stress, pressure and emotions with the mission to help athletes and people flourish and create a place where Well-Being, Mindfulness and Sports Performance meet. Where she has got to in her sport hasn't come easy and has been thrown some pretty big challenges but Rachel has found a way to persevere and has a bright future ahead of her. www.followthroughwithlvb.com www.thehappyathlete.org
