In this episode, I'm sharing my personal journey to the New York City Half Marathon — from lacing up as a total beginner to crossing the finish line in one of the most iconic cities in the world. As a mom of twins, stepmom of teens, and full-time working mom, training for a half marathon wasn't just about running. It was about reclaiming my wellness, building confidence one mile at a time, and doing something bigger than myself — all while raising money for Team for Kids, an organization dedicated to bringing free fitness programs to children in underserved communities.  In this episode, you'll hear: How I went from “not a runner” to 13.1 miles The real-life challenges of training while juggling work and motherhood Why running with Team for Kids gave my miles more meaning How running became a powerful act of self-care and impact My advice for anyone chasing a bold dream — even when it feels impossible Whether you're training for a race, craving motivation, or simply looking for a reminder that you are capable of more than you think, this episode is for you.

family, Pastor Edwin here—first of all, you need to know that on Sunday the roads will be crowded with people running the NYC Half Marathon, so take public transportation to get to church. And now for the real important part of this message! In our latest series we’ve been talking about our identities—who we are now that we believe in Christ. As we’ve said before, the most important thing about you is what you think about God. The second most important thing is what you think about yourself. There’s no need to struggle with a wrong identity that was bestowed upon us early in our lives and simply does not fit anymore. I look forward to talking more about this on Sunday. We meet at 10 a.m., 360 Schermerhorn St. Kids ages 5-12 have their own service starting 10 a.m. as well. See you there,

Michelle Wheeler: Becoming a Professional Wheelchair Racer

Strides Forward

Michelle Wheeler is an internationally competitive marathon and distance road racer. Last year saw Wheeler race marathons in Boston, Berlin, Sydney, London, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia, in addition to traveling throughout the US to shorter-distance races. And, this year, she'll also be returning to shorter distance racing on the track. Wheeler will be competing at the Paralympic Trials in the 800, 1500, and 5000, vying for her play on Team USA. Wheeler has been an athlete since childhood in a number of sports, including wheelchair racing. Her early focus was on the track, in sprinting events. Back then, she had no interest in anything longer than those short bursts of speed, the 100, the 200, the 400 meters. As she entered adulthood, Wheeler's focus shifted to other parts of life. She became a mom. She moved from her childhood home in New Jersey to New York City, where she earned her bachelor's degree. Competitive wheelchair racing wasn't top of mind, but as it would turn out, fate stepped in to change that. Today, Wheeler is a professional marathon wheelchair racer, earning invitations to line up at races all over the world. That is what this story is all about, how Wheeler returned to racing and discovered her passion for competing in marathons; and how she's learned to navigate life as a mom, full time rehabilitation and mental health counselor, and professional athlete. As Wheeler goes into, finding balance and focusing on mental health has been key to this journey. Wheeler opened her 2024 season at the NYC Half-Marathon on March 17, where she finished a strong 4th place. Next on her schedule is the Boston Marathon, taking place on April 15. At Boston, Wheeler will be racing as a member of Team Bevans. Team Bevans comprises exceptional Black women marathoners running the Boston Marathon. They run in honor of Marilyn Bevans, the first American born Black woman to run the marathon in under 3 hours. This is just one of many accolades Bevans earned as one of the best marathoners of her day. Wheeler and the other women on the team embody the spirit of Black woman excellence in marathon running sparked by Bevans, and help solidify her incredible legacy. "When I ran the Cherry Blossom (10 Miler), it was very windy. And what I did in that time (46:11), I felt like I could have sustained that pace for a while. Plus the environment – the wind, the temperature was very cold… Based on the training I was doing, my coach felt like I could go under 60 (minutes). We've been planning on just getting a solid half, and then a really fast half. It's really in my mind. So hopefully. Hopefully, after the track season this year I can find a really fast (half marathon) and try to get the American record there." Hillary Bor is a two-time U.S. Olympian in the steeplechase and the third-fastest American steeplechaser in history. He is preparing to make his half marathon debut at the United Airlines NYC Half on March 17. This is a highly-anticipated half marathon debut since Bor ran 46:11 last year to break Greg Meyer's American record of 46:13 for 10 miles at the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler. Even with his track success, he's taken well to the roads. In this episode, Bor talks about his hopes for a career on the roads, why he thought Ryan Hall's 59:43 American record could be attainable, when he's thinking about the marathon and why his training group under coach Scott Simmons has him set up for success. He also has unfinished business on the track as he looks to make his third Olympic team this summer for Paris. Hillary also shares some of his own story coming from Kenya from an accomplished running family, his NCAA career at Iowa State and then joining the U.S. Army before his running career took off. WRS featured Huddle in March of this year, 2023, to tell the story of her postpartum return to racing and how it all went down at the 2023 NYC Half Marathon. Immediately after that, Huddle was diagnosed with a serious injury. In this episode, Huddle catches us up on her injury recovery, why she decided to run the NYC Marathon on November 5, as well as how the marathon unfolded, and her plans going forward. Huddle also shares what she's been doing for the running community outside of racing, including raising money for &mother in conjunction with running NYC and helping to further the conversation around being a career athlete and becoming a mom. Molly Huddle is already a legend in the running world, and her racing story continues to develop. She's a two-time Olympian, multi-time national champion, and former American record holder in the 5000m and 10,000m. It has the rustic decor and the avocado toast was amazing.   There's a huge screen for movie night and the cafe has bar style sitting and lounge area also.  Off in the rear of the store was a huge kid themed carpet when I inquired as to what the deal was Angelo one of the owners said they have set up as a kid area, so folks in the neighborhood can have a place for their toddlers to play while they sip on their beverage.   They also carry CBD products.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derek-oxley/support

Sarah shares with us her experiences as a runner in NYC including many races and places to train along with her favorite places to eat.  I chime in with my favorite restaurants and my experience running the Staten Island Half Marathon.  We also talk with Serena Marie RD about the food of the week. Here are Sarah's recommendations on running and eating in the NYCPlaces to Run in NYC:Central Park: My favorite place to run in Central Park is the Reservoir. It is a 1.5 mile loop so it is easy to keep track of your distance; there are also three other long distance routes to choose from in the park--6.1 miles, 5.2 miles, and 1.7 milesRiverside Park along West Side Highway: My favorite place to run because you have incredible views of the Hudson River as well as other NYC landmarks such as the Freedom Tower and Statue of Liberty; the running path stretches from the George Washington Bridge to Battery Park. There are several amenities along the way such as bathrooms and water fountains. Prospect Park: For those who don't live in Manhattan or want to explore another borough, Prospect Park is a wonderful place to run in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Bridge Run: Running across the Brooklyn Bridge (1.1 miles) affords beautiful views of the NYC skyline if you start in Brooklyn and run to Manhattan. If you decide to start in Manhattan and run across the bridge to Brooklyn, you can stop at Grimaldi's Pizzeria for a slice of pizza or the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory for a scoop of delicious ice cream.
