“The pieces were there – but getting them to mesh and come together, we had to embrace the imperfect. We had to have these women realize that if you're scared of something, the only way to get over that fear is to conquer it. That was what this championship was for a lot of the women. My guest for today's episode is Diljeet Taylor, Head Coach of BYU's women's cross country and track team. She's one of the most inspiring leaders in the sport. Coach Taylor just wrapped up a storybook season by guiding BYU to the 2024 NCAA Cross Country women's team title. It's their second national championship under her leadership and the program's sixth overall. This victory wasn't just about redemption. It was about resilience one year after a devastating 14th place finish at NCAAs – the lowest moment of her coaching career. Coach Taylor and her team embraced the imperfect, leaned into their depth, and executed when it mattered most. From butterfly mantras to pajama parties to brilliant race strategies, Coach Taylor proved that with belief and preparation, anything is possible. In today's conversation, we talked about BYU's incredible turnaround, her approach to coaching All-Americans and building a winning culture, and why this year was a testament to her mantra, ‘Embrace the imperfect.' "It's not like I'm jogging on those days [that I'm running] or that I'm cross-training easily. I think people underestimate what I'm doing. When I cross-train, there are puddles of sweat on the floor to the point that our recreational center has to put out 'Wet Floor' signs because I sweat that much. One time, they put an 'Out of Order' sign on my machine because they thought it was leaking. Little did they know, it was my sweat." Florida's Parker Valby just won the 2023 NCAA Cross Country individual championship title after a runner-up finish behind NC State's Katelyn Tuohy in 2022. She wrapped up an undefeated 4–0 season that includes wins at the Nuttycombe Invitational, the SEC Championships and the NCAA South Regional before winning it all in Charlottesville just nine days ago. She dominated the race and covered the 6K course in 18 minutes and 55 seconds to win by just over 10 seconds. Parker is also the NCAA Outdoor 5000m champion and owns a personal best of 15:20 for 5000m and 8:49 for 3000m. She has drawn a bunch of attention to her training methods after telling the media that she only runs two to three days a week while cross-training a lot in between. "I try to divert a lot of the attention from me towards the team because it really is a lot bigger than just me and my performances. I have a lot of supportive teammates and great staff at Harvard – so that's one thing I try to do. The other thing is just to stay in the moment with the guys. In the end, I'm a part of this team and that's the most important thing. I don't really want to isolate myself as an individual on the squad. We are the squad. We refer to ourselves as 'the hive mind'. I think we even said that on the line at NCAAs – three, two, one, hive mind.” Harvard's Graham Blanks just won the NCAA Cross Country men's individual title and became the first man from the Ivy League to do so. Blanks completed a perfect 5–0 season that included wins at the Battle in Beantown, Nuttycombe Invitational, Ivy League Championships and the NCAA Division I Northeast Region Cross Country Championships before Saturday's victory. At 21 years old, he is also the youngest person to win the NCAA Cross Country Championships since Dathan Ritzenhein in 2003. The future is bright and now he turns his attention to the indoor track season as early as next weekend in Boston. He already owns personal bests of 7:44.76 for 3000m and 13:18.45 for 5000m. Before even arriving in Flagstaff, he was the sparkplug that kicked off Newbury Park High School's cross country and track dominance when he ran 9:05 for 3200 meters as a sophomore and then won a bunch of state and national titles as a junior and senior. It's been a great progression for him. He's lowered his personal best to 13:11 for the 5000m, which puts him at No. 3 on the all-time collegiate list. He was third at the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships in the event and then took eighth at the U.S. Outdoor Championships 5000m final. All of this and he's still just 20 years old. We touch on a bit of his progression, how he's handled that rise in an era of social media, what makes this NAU team special and also what it was like coming out as gay before the start of the cross country season. I appreciate Nico's openness in this conversation and I'm looking forward to seeing how fast he goes this weekend at the BU Season Opener, where he's the top seed in the men's 5000m. People seem to enjoy when we talk NCAA cross country in the past so I'm bringing back Isaac Wood, our cross country guru and the founder of The Wood Report to break down for us what we should watch for this season. If you go to TheWoodReportXC.com, you will find all of his rankings and ratings for each team. He goes through every school and every roster to project who will be competing at this year's big dance in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Nov. 17. We've got an interesting season ahead with NAU going for its sixth title in seven years and NC State looking to become the first women's team to go back-to-back in over a decade. Isaac has some bold takes on those teams and much more. I've transcribed some of his big takeaways so you can find those and his rankings at CITIUSMAG.com. The NCAA Cross Country Championships are here, one of the biggest events in running. I do my best to breakdown who will take the top spots and how it will go down.
2004 Olympian Carrie Tollefson, was born and raised in the small tightly knit community of Dawson, Minnesota, where she won thirteen state championships - eight in track and five consecutive cross country titles, a national record that still stands today. Carrie won her first national collegiate title at the 1997 NCAA Cross Country Championships, overcoming stress fractures in her metatarsal and a heel tumor that would need a bone donor and surgery. This Villanova student-athlete superstar was on crutches for two months post-surgery, setting her sights on proving the doubters wrong, as she returned to lead the Wildcats to win the NCAA Cross Country team title the following year. After college Carrie won three USATF National Championships, including an Olympic Trials victory in the 1500 meters in 2004. She represented Team USA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, earning a number one USA ranking by Track and Field News in the 1500 meters. This running standout has put her broadcast journalism and communications degree to work as an analyst and commentator for ESPN2, NBC, and USATF.TV with regular media appearances at the NYC Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Boston Marathon, and events worldwide. In 2010 she began her online video show, C Tolle Run, now a podcast—which can be enjoyed on your favorite podcast platform. Carrie has graced covers of Track and Field News, Running Times, with five cover appearances on Runner's World. This Minnesota sports luminary was inducted into the Minnesota High School Hall of Fame in 2015 and The National High School Hall of Fame in 2018. Join me in catching up with this gracious champion, who lives and trains in her home state of Minnesota with her husband Charlie and their three children, Ruby, Everett, and Greer. What a treat to host Carrie on this episode of Intrinsic Drive™. Intrinsic Drive™ is produced by Ellen Strickler and Phil Wharton. Special thanks to Andrew Hollingworth, our sound engineer and technical editor. For more information on this and other episodes visit us at www.whartonhealth.com/intrinsicdrive. Conner Mantz is a junior at BYU and just won the NCAA Cross Country Championships last month. Right from the start of the race, he went with the hot pace established early by Iowa State’s Wesley Kiptoo and eventually pulled away to win by 22 seconds. Mantz is the first American man to win the NCAA individual title since 2008. He was BYU’s first champion since 2006. Just two weeks or so after that race, he went on to run 13:24.78 for 5,000 meters in the men’s 5000m at the Hayward Premiere – the first meet held at the newly renovated Hayward Field. The time is a school record and a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier. Hear more about his development at BYU (and way before that since he ran his first half marathon at 12 years old), his plans for the rest of the season, thoughts on turning pro and much more.

“I feel like I’ve been trying to prove I’m one of the best runners in the country for a very long time yet I’m consistently one of the best. It’s just I haven’t had that breakout performance or won that championship that really mattered. That’s why I feel like this race was finally a validation of my whole running career. I’m finally among in a place where I feel like I belong.” David Melly and I reunite for another crossover episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast and the Run Your Mouth Podcast. In this episode, we welcome Marty Hehir after his 2:08:59 win at The Marathon Project in Chandler, Arizona. The race was spectacularly fast with seven Americans breaking 2:10. One of the major stories after Sunday was that Marty finally got his big win. It's been a long time coming. I first crossed paths with him in 2012 when similarly took many by surprise to win the Big East Cross Country championship. After the race, I asked him "Who are you?" and he later shared an Instagram post in Jan. 2019 where he wrote: “I’ve been running as hard as I can ever since to make sure no one has to ask me that question again.” Marty is a medical student in anesthesiology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. We touch on what that consists of before he graduates in May 2021. He also is a professional runner with the Reebok Boston Track Club and coach Chris Fox, who was also his coach at Syracuse. Marty was a member of the 2015 NCAA Cross Country championship-winning team. He took to the roads shortly after graduation and has found lots of success. When we dive into his relationship with coach Fox, he shares how since 2017 he has targetted the marathon as his event. It paid off when he took 6th at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:11:29 but had also stopped to use the bathroom at Mile 18. He'll share that story on the podcast as well. On top of all that...he's a father to two girls. Time management is his specialty and he'll share his schedule and routine with us. This is the behind the scenes of how he became the seventh-fastest American marathoner of all-time. Enjoy. Catch the latest episode of the podcast on iTunes so subscribe and leave a five-star review. The affects of COVID-19 continue to leave unanswered questions in so many facets of our world, even once decisions are made. Most recent in college cross country, the NCAA announced the new date of the NCAA Cross Country on Monday, March 15, 2021...only two days after the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The decision leaves coaches and athletes with many questions including how to qualifying, how to train for potentially two very different races and how to plan competitions with current travel and budget restrictions in place. Ryan and Alex sit down with defending NCAA Championship (indoor, outdoor and xc...triple crown in 2019!) coach at the University of Arkansas, Lance Harter. Harter has led the Lady Razorbacks for the past 31 years and is the most decorated women's track and field/xc coach in SEC history

The COVID-19 pandemic is changing sports as we know it in many ways, but that's not the only thing that could change NCAA cross country forever. Recently, a report was published from a teleconference held by the NCAA DI Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Committee that provides insight on a potential change in the way DI teams would qualify to the NCAA Cross Country Regionals and Championships. The change could see a shift in the current nine region system, that allows all DI programs to compete, to a five region system that allows only 60-80 teams to compete for a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In this episode of BTG, we talk to 3-time NCAA Cross Country championship coach, Dave Smith of Oklahoma State, who sheds light on the talk currently circulating within the coaching world on this proposed change. Smith, who was a past member of the NCAA DI Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Committee, explains the typical process he's experienced around changes to qualifying systems. Smith also shares his thoughts on how the upcoming 2020 NCAA Cross Country could be affected by the pandemic, if the season was to take place, and how this could affect the ability for teams to qualify to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the current system. Tim and Sean are back for another riveting episode of Down the Track. The in-studio guest is Maxine Paholek, back in Australia on break from Boise State University where as a Freshman she established herself as a key member of the Bronco’s NCAA Cross Country and Track squads. Maxine provides great insight into her experience so far in the NCAA system, and adapting to life in general as a US College student. With some great performances over the cross country season then recording a substantial PB in her specialist track event the 3000m Steeple, Maxine talks us through how she approached each season and the usual highs and lows along the way. In international news the Australian performances in Europe continue with Ninove (Belgium) and Bern (Switzerland) playing hos to a number of Australians including Ryan & Genevieve Gregson, Michelle Jenneke, James Hansen and Nick Hough. Heidi See popped out a 4:33 mile in the USA, while Georgia Winkcup continued her strong progression in the steeple with a World Championship qualifier in Birmingham. Domestically we had the Australian Half Marathon Championship on the Sunshine Coast with Lisa Weightman highlighting the stellar field to collect a $25,000 bonus by running the fastest Half Marathon on Australian soil. An unfortunate directional error by the officials lead to Jack Rayner being DQ’d, allowing Kevin Batt to claim the Australian title. The world’s biggest timed fun run, Sydney’s City to Surf, saw Victorian based Harry Summers almost claim Steve Moneghetti’s long standing race record, falling just 2sec shy of the mark. South Australian Tara Palm continued on from her impressive Run at Adelaide’s Fitzy’s 5 to claim the women’s title in the Harbour City. Athletics Victoria’s General Manager of Sport Delivery, Ross Cunningham, joins the Podcast to talk about the upcoming Summer season. With some new initiatives, including the introduction of the Athletics Victoria Shield League, Ross details what participants can expect from the new season. With Sally Pearson announcing her retirement, the team examine her legacy to the sport and potential gaps that may now appear within the Australian team environment at the major championships. In a recurring hot topic, more issues have been raised about Nike shoe technology, this time the spikes used by Sifan Hassan to break the World Mile record. With the Australian Cross Country Championship not far away, Sean and Tim review the main contenders based on who they believe to be running and assess Victoria’s chances to win the women’s and men’s team titles. This conversation is with Rory Linkletter. Rory runs cross country and track at BYU. He has had absolutely tremendous success as a runner. He is the blue jeans mile world recorder holder where he ran a full mile in 4 minutes and 16 seconds at altitude which converts to a 4:11. His PRs include a 13:49 5k and a 28:58 10k. Those are fast times, but his greatest achievement so far is his second place finish at nationals in the 10k. Now, that might change in just a few days because he and his team have a great shot at winning the NCAA Cross Country title this year. We recorded this conversation right before the start of the cross country season. It’s been really really cool to learn how he thinks and works and then to see that translate to athletic success throughout this whole season, not just for himself, but for his team. I'm extremely excited for him, his team, and my team to compete this weekend. Like I said earlier, Rory is fast. He's considered to be one of the best collegiate runners in the country, but It wasn't always like that for him. He struggled to make the transition to college because he had a stress fracture that sidelined him for several months. His story is one of true perseverance and hard work. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!
