Dakotah Lindwurm is a professional distance runner for the Minnesota Distance Elite Team, sponsored by Puma. Her specialty is the marathon. Just a few short weeks ago, Lindwurm became an Olympian. This is Dakotah Lindwurm's Olympic dream story. It begins with the moment that sparked this dream, way back in childhood. Lindwurm shares how, despite not showing obvious potential in her early running, she continued to dream big: through her walk-on DII collegiate running days; turning pro; the US Olympic Trials in Orlando, Florida, back on February 2, 2024, where she was considered a strong underdog; to making Team USA; and up through racing on the greatest stage of sports: The Olympics. Lundwurm's story is all about big dreams that weathered big challenges, bolstered by the power of support and self-belief. Lindwurm ran an incredible race at the Paris Olympics, where she placed 12th. She was the top American finisher, running 2:26:44. And, she's already looking ahead: Lindwurm will be lining up at the 2024 NYC Marathon on November 3. One fact is now clear, Lindwurm is no longer underdog: she is and will forever be an Olympian. Dakotah Lindwurm crossed the finish line in Paris as the 12th overall woman and top American in the 2024 Olympic Marathon, solidifying her spot at or near the top of United States distance running.Lindwurm joins the podcast to discuss the strategy behind her race, which included (unintentionally, perhaps) leading the field just past the halfway point. She shares details of her life and preparation in Paris for the biggest race of her life, and she also details what might be next in her still growing career --- hint, 2025 Grandma's Marathon seems to be written in pen, not pencil. The Minnesotan admits she can't call herself an underdog at almost any race she enters from here on out --- that includes the New York City Marathon just under three months from when the episode was recorded. Lindwurm does say her life continues to change, but it's changed less after the Olympics themselves than it did after she made the team in February.Change is good, though, especially it's because you're now on everyone's radar.

"I love when I can hear, ‘Look at how good she looks!' or, ‘She's smiling, that's awesome!' I hope that one person sees it and is like, ‘If an elite marathoner can have fun while doing this, maybe I can.'" Dakotah Lindwurm just wrapped up an impressive performance at the Paris Olympic Marathon, finishing in 12th place with a time of 2:26:44. She was the Olympic Trials third place finisher but just finished as the top American in Paris. Training went really well in the build-up and she admits to believing she was capable of medaling. After the halfway mark, she even found herself in the lead of the race. On a course that was tough and hilly, Dakotah stuck to her steady strategy. While others were surging and falling back, she maintained her pace, staying within striking distance of the leaders. She fared well on the hills that broke several of the top marathoners and then shared a story of how a little boy on the side of the road helped energize her enough to finish strong and pass reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir toward the end of the race. Dakotah is taking a lot of confidence from this one and is ready for her next one – the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3rd. We talk about her goals for that one and how Paris has totally warped our thinking on how tough hills are. Chris Lundstrom is coach of the Minnesota Distance Elite team that includes female marathon ace Dakotah Lindwurm, who's running the Paris Olympic Marathon on August 11. Lundstrom himself has a marathon PR of 2:17, and a PhD in exercise science. He teaches at the University of Minnesota. Lindwurm wasn't among the favorites at the U.S. Marathon Trials in Orlando last February, but she has proven strength at the 26.2-mile distance, and finished third. Another Minnesota Distance Elite runner, Annie Frisbie, placed 10th. Here Lundstrom discusses: # The training principles he uses with his runners # Why he thinks solid marathon training is more important than all the newer gimmicks like shoes, gels, and recovery tools # Why he and Lindwurm opted to skip altitude training in the pre-Paris period # What Lindwurm has done to prepare for possible warm weather in Paris # What it's like to teach a college course in marathon-training for undergraduates # Why he thinks the U.S. needs more "development" programs and funds for post-collegiate runners # And much more For more on Minnesota Distance Elite, click here. "I just felt like I just needed to get to the finish line, touch the finish line, and then celebrate. I don't feel like it is real yet. I don't know that it will until I'm back home and into my routine. But I keep getting little reminders that I am now going to be on an Olympic team, and I almost break down in tears every time." An average high school runner, Minnesota Distance Elite's Dakotah Lindwurm walked onto the team at Northern State University, but wound up a two-time NCAA Division II. She similarly entered the world of post-collegiate running as an unheralded but steady performer. But she ramped up to the marathon distance early, raced it often, and steadily chipped away at it, even winning the Grandma's Marathon a couple of times. Still, despite boasting a well-filled-out resume, she seemed like a longshot to make an Olympic team. Too many big names were slotted ahead of her with PRs significantly faster. That all changed on Saturday when Lindwurm outlasted all but two members of one of the best fields ever assembled at an Olympic Trials marathon. Her story is sure to inspire, and her progression is one that I know high school coaches nationwide are sharing with their non-state-champion athletes this week. Dakotah was generous enough to chat with Kyle Merber over the phone following her qualification for this week's edition of The Lap Count. "Starting to talk with Alistair (Cragg), I was really excited about his ambition and excitement for the (PUMA Elite) team. He wanted to create a situation where we would be contending for World teams, Olympic teams and eventually contending on those bigger stages as well. At first, hearing those goals sounded a little bit scary. Exciting, but scary. So it's really cool to start seeing some of it actually come together." My guest for today's episode is Fiona O'Keeffe – the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials champion. She ran the fastest marathon debut in American history with a 2:22:10 performance to win and also break the previous Marathon Trials record held by Shalane Flanagan from 2012. She will be joined at the Paris Olympics by American record holder Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm. O'Keeffe was so impressive in the Orlando heat and pressed from the front to pull away from her competitors about 19 miles into the race. She ran all of the last few miles under 5:30 but threw down a 5:09 at Mile 25. She ended up winning by more than 30 seconds. In this episode, we chat about how she mastered her marathon debut, when she knew the 26.2-mile distance was calling, her excitement over the state of U.S. women's marathoning and we had to ask about the blood on her bib, which was caused by chafing from a gel that was stashed in her top. A star is born in U.S. marathoning. The 28-year-old Puma-sponsored athlete who trains with Minnesota Distance Elite finished third at the Trials, running 2:25:31 and fulfilling a lifelong dream of earning a spot on Team USA. In this conversation, recorded just two days after the race (while on vacation in the Dominican Republic!), Dakotah talks about her 130-mile training weeks leading up to the Trials while working full-time as a paralegal. She talks about developing an unwavering confidence and belief in herself, shares her original race plan, and breaks down the race itself. Plus, what it was like racing with teammate and best friend Annie Frisbie, what the spectators in Orlando were like, and the mid-race move that makes her feel "icky." “I'm excited to be back there because you never know how many chances you get to represent the U.S. on the global stage. I feel like I've been really fortunate in my career and I've gotten a lot of really cool opportunities, but still - they don't happen often. So I try to really savor the moments when something big happens, when I qualify for a team, and just really take advantage of the opportunity.” American record holder Emily Sisson, who finished second in this year's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:22:42, re-joins the show. She finished behind Fiona O'Keeffe and ahead of Dakotah Lindwurm, which is your team for the Paris Olympics. In this episode, we recap Emily's race and how she overcame some struggles of her own yet kept her composure to qualify for her second Olympics. This will be the first time that she runs the marathon at the Summer Games. She shares some insights into covering key moves during the race, strategy talk with Keira D'Amato beforehand and a little bit on the sisterhood of American women's marathoning greats. Hey there, runners and fitness enthusiasts! Welcome to the fourth episode of the Ask Alli Spin-Off, where we dive deep into training and running. I'm your host, Coach Alli, and I'm here to guide you on this journey to help you reach your fitness goals.Today's episode of 'Ask Alli' takes a turn after viewing the rerun of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and recapping the race, learnings, and takeaways for all of us to apply to our running training! I share my biggest takeaways and lessons for ALL of us to apply to our runs, to stay process-oriented, and to learn to love the journey, not the outcome of one race. There are some wins to celebrate! Congratulations to three women who made the Olympic Team: Fiona O'Keeffe Wins The U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in her First-Ever Marathon, followed by Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm. And to two men, brothers, and training partners with guaranteed spots on the men's Olympic Team, too! Conner Mantz ran 2:07:48 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, and Clayton Young tallied a time of 2:08:00 in Chicago.I am so happy and proud of all of us, of our sport. I am still hysterically crying, just feeling all the emotions and loving how well these people ran their hearts out the way they did today. Thank you to everyone behind the scenes who made today's event possible and viewable for the public. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. We all appreciate it. I can't find a word for how I feel right now because inspiration doesn't do justice.
Two-time Grandma's Marathon champion Dakotah Lindwurm joins the podcast to talk about her training leading into the 2024 US Olympic Trials, where she will be one of the athletes expected to compete for a spot in the Paris Games. In 2021, Lindwurm became the first Minnesota woman to win Grandma's Marathon since Janis Klecker in 1987, and then one year later she returned to become just the eighth repeat women's champion and first since Sarah Kiptoo in 2016.Lindwurm has been a fan favorite each time she's competed in Duluth, thanks in large part to the smile she proudly displays from start to finish. She's also been an outspoken advocate of the event itself, and she plans to be back in some capacity this June following the results of the Olympic Trials.
Lauren Hagans made her marathon debut at the 2023 Grandma's Marathon, and her first-ever race was certainly one to remember. Hagans beat out two-time defending champion Dakotah Lindwurm to win the women's crown, finishing her debut with a time of 2:25:55.That time also qualified Hagans for the 2024 US Olympic Trials, which will be held February 3 in Orlando, Fla. Hagans lives and trains in Flagstaff, and she's excited for the opportunity to compete for one of three women's spots in the 2024 Paris Games.

After a return to running five years ago, she keeps getting better, as evidenced by her 2nd-place finish to Dakotah Lindwurm at this year's Grandma's Marathon. This was a fun behind-the-scenes episode about that legendary 2018 Boston race and how Sellers manages her time and running goals. She actually didn't start out as a runner but had dreams of making it big as an ice hockey goaltender. The running started as a way to have a more balanced approach to sport. Dakotah's love for running was a gradual progression, sticking with it, making improvement's year after year but most of all, having fun. Whether it's a world major or Olympic qualifier, she can always be seen with a smile across her face. Carrie chats with Dakotah Lindwurm! The 2022 Grandma's Marathon champion talks about her second victory at that race, her last minute thoughts on going for the record, being part of a small but mighty pack of ladies up front, doing the Macarena close to the end, being sponsored for the first time, what's next for her, and much more!
"When it's race time, we're competitive. I'm never just going to let Annie win! But it's also really fun that when the race is over, we get to celebrate together regardless of how it went." Annie Frisbie and Dakotah Lindwurm have a lot in common. They train together as members of Minnesota Distance Elite. They're both sponsored by Puma. And they're both chill, low key, and low profile in their everyday lives — but when it's marathon go time, they unleash their superpowers. This week on Friendship Fest, Annie (a 2:26 marathoner who made her 26.2-mile debut at the New York City Marathon last year) and Dakotah (who just won Grandma's Marathon in a personal best of 2:25) talk about how they met, how they bond during weekend long runs (by refusing to slow down for the boys), and how they find joy in racing. Dakota Lindwurm played hockey every free moment she had as a kid and dreamed of becoming a professional goalie. When her mom worried she was getting a little too obsessed, she told her she needed to add another sport for balance. Lucky for us, Dakotah chose running because she brings huge passion & joy to our sport. Dakotah managed to rock the Macarena at mile 24 of Grandma's Marathon 2022 while defending her title and running 2:25:01—the 12th fastest women's American marathon time ever! Dakotah was a walk-on at Northern State where she had to convince her coach, Kevin Bjerke, to take a chance on her before becoming a 2X D2 All-American. He became her biggest advocate, helped her to dream big, and convinced her she could make the Olympic Trials as a marathoner. Next, Dakotah connected with Minnesota Distance Elite Team and current coach, Chris Lundstrum, who is now working with her to chase down even bigger dreams. We discuss: key coaches/mentors: Andy Forbort, Kevin Bjerke, Chris Lundstrum; the gift of self-belief; becoming a biology teacher vs pursuing her dream; betting on herself and convincing others to get on board; Hawi Management & her Puma deal; learnings from CIM; her first marathon finish; getting the A-standard OTQ at Grandma's; the Atlanta Olympic Trials experience; race day feels from a 2:25; mantras; what's next; community service; & so much more! What makes Dakotah so easy to root for is that she loves to take big swings: "When I toe the line, I dare greatly. I push the envelope every time and try to find the top end of my fitness. I give myself the best shot to have the best day—which means I have a lot of bad days, but all of those bad days are worth one of these great days." Dakotah is a rockstar & I'm so grateful for the positive energy shared and the many great takeaways in this one! Olympians, Paralympians, and global marathon winners will race from Hopkinton to Boston on April 18 and will be the first race held on the traditional Patriots' Day date since 2019. The Boston Marathon made history last year by becoming the first Abbott World Marathon Major event to offer equal $50,000 course record bonuses across open and wheelchair divisions, and the first event to provide a designated prize purse for athletes with upper limb, lower limb, and visual impairments. For the 37th year, prize money awards will be provided by principal sponsor John Hancock. These Were the Top Shoes at the 2022 Boston Marathon Ever since the first carbon-plated super shoes hit the roads, they've dominated the pro running conversation. With any speedy performance, we want to know: What latest shoe technology were they wearing? That was certainly the case for Monday's thrilling Boston Marathon where Peres Jepchirchir and Ababel Yeshaneh fought until the very last mile for their glory moment. In the end, it was Jepchirchir who out-kicked Yeshaneh 2:21.01 to 2:21.05. In the context of super shoes, though, it may as well have been a head-to-head battle between Adidas and Nike, two Goliaths in the space. And though Nike had more racers finish in the top 15 wearing its shoes, the eventual 2022 Boston Marathon champion was wearing a pair of Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 2's. With the Boston Marathon approaching, I wanted to shed some light on the womens pro field, get to know who's running, and of course what their morning routines look like. I've been bummed to see the lack of exposure that these amazing athletes get, and although it's getting better, I want to add to the conversation. I talk to Dakotah Lindwurm in this episode who is part of the Minnesota Distance Elite Team and part of the Puma Team. Listen in and make sure to tune in to this years Boston Marathon to cheer her on!
2021 Grandma's Marathon champion Dakotah Lindwurm joins the podcast to talk about her training cycle this year, which includes both Boston Marathon in April and Grandma's Marathon in June.Lindwurm became the first Minnesota woman to win Grandma's Marathon since Janis Klecker in 1987, and she'll be back in the field this year to try and become just the eighth repeat women's champion and first since Sarah Kiptoo in 2016.She also talks about her late mom, who still inspires her every time she's on a start line, and discusses some of her favorite off-the-beaten-path things to do in Duluth on race weekend.
From ice hockey goalie to elite marathoner (it's Minnesota, what do you expect), Dakotah Lindwurm embodies the grit and endurance of an elite marathoner. Recently signed to Puma, Dakotah already has a win at Grandma's Marathon and finished third American at the 2021 Boston Marathon. We discuss her underdog mentality, her 5x-a-week gym routine, and what it was like to DNF her first marathon. Follow Dakotah Lindwurm on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dakotahlindwurm/ The Believe in the Run team also chats about their sleep, training, upcoming races, whats going on with Kara Goucher, sketchy running routes and more. “I thought he just wanted to be my friend!” Love on the Run Week, day four! Today we're joined by Minnesota Distance Elite's Annie Frisbie and Dhru Patel. Annie is in the midst of a breakout year on the run. She made her marathon debut at the TCS New York City Marathon in November, where she ran a 2:26, finishing seventh overall and as the third American woman. That time was the fourth-fastest marathon debut by an American woman. Then, Annie signed her first professional sponsorship deal with Puma. Last month, she raced for the first time in her new kit and shoes at the Houston Half Marathon, running a 1:10, finishing 10th, and immediately saying she was "hungry for more." When she's not running professionally, Annie is a graphic designer. On this episode, we hear all about that day in New York City from Annie's perspective, and from Dhru's, who was there to support his girlfriend and teammate. Dhru explains why he's taking a running and training break right now, and about what his days look like without running and competing. Dhru is perhaps best known for making history in April 2019. “That is how I always race — I've always got a smile on my face.” Dakotah Lindwurm runs happy. If you saw her leading the 2021 Boston Marathon — where she ultimately finished as the third American woman — you saw that smile on full display, from start to finish. And that smile just got a lot bigger, as Dakotah kicks off the new year with her first professional contract. Last week, Dakotah announced that she has officially signed with Puma, and that she will continue training with Minnesota Distance Elite. On this episode, the 2:29 marathoner (and former hockey goalie!) talks about her stellar past year on the run, which included two half-marathon personal bests and a win at Grandma's Marathon, where she also ran a personal best. She talks about being pegged as an underdog, and why she loves it, and about her goals for this weekend's Houston Half Marathon.
