Emma Bates is the CEO and co-founder of Diem. Diem is creating a new front door to the internet––starting with their social search engine that draws inspiration from how women search the internet. Emma is on a mission to showcase how inclusive internet platforms, like Diem, bridge the gender information gap and pave the way for a "new internet" that nurtures real connections through innovative technology. Prior to Diem, Emma led Partnerships at the travel brand, Away, and was Head of Community at the global creator commerce company, Whalar. Her unique approach on marketing, partnerships and community building has landed her a coveted spot on Forbes's “30 Under 30” list as well as features in Fortune, HuffPost, MSNBC, Girlboss, Inc Mag, Entrepreneur and The Cut.  Born in Singapore and raised in the UK, she earned a BA from King's College London before moving to New York City in 2016. “If I just focus on competing, it's turned out to be really fun and turned out to work in my favor each time. That's been the mindset: Let's just race, focus on competing, and not really worry about the clock. That's a lot of how I approached Boston.”After finishing one spot off of the Team USA squads in the marathon and the 10,000m for the Olympics and the half marathon for the World Road Running Championships, Jess McLain has made it a habit of being so close, yet just off of these national teams. But on Patriots Day in Boston, she kicked it open, running a smart, gutsy race that saw her surge through the Newton Hills strategically with Emma Bates and Sara Hall chasing a lead pack and then closing in 5:15 seconds for the final mile. Jess cemented her place as one of the top contenders in American distance running. In today's conversation, we get into what changed with this particular marathon build, from training under coach David Roche to how she's getting used to these major marathon scenes. We talk a lot about the importance of carbs and how that's also been a game changer for her as well as why her drive to compete instead of focusing on times works so well. With big goals on the horizon and the 2028 Olympic cycle now underway, Jess McClain might just be getting started and really coming into her own as a marathoner.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Jess McClain | @jesstonn on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. The 2025 Boston Marathon promises an exciting blend of redemption stories, debut intrigue, and head-to-head rivalries across both elite fields. On the men's side, defending champion Sisay Lemma returns after last year's audacious front-running victory, facing off against 2024 Chicago champ John Korir, two-time Boston winner Evans Chebet, rising Kenyan Daniel Mateiko, and U.S. hopeful Conner Mantz. Other contenders include Lesotho's Tebello Ramakongoana and Americans Clayton Young and CJ Albertson, each hoping to outlast the pack or capitalize on race-day chaos. In the women's race, Hellen Obiri is chasing a rare three-peat in Boston, entering as the clear favorite despite a strong field. She'll be challenged by past podium finishers Amane Beriso and Sharon Lokedi, 2:16 marathoner Yalemzerf Yehualaw, and rising marathon star Irene Cheptai. The American field is led by Keira D'Amato in her Boston debut, Emma Bates returning to form, and Dakota Popehn riding Olympic momentum. Young talents like Gabi Rooker, Jessica McClain, and Jackie Gaughan round out a promising domestic squad, with veterans Des Linden and Sara Vaughn adding experience to the mix.Cooler temperatures, slight winds, and the Newton Hills promise another unpredictable Patriot's Day. Tactics, toughness, and timing will determine who claims the tape on Boylston.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. We're thrilled to share this interview with Kiera Smalls, the Executive Director of the Running Industry Coalition.  The RIDC is an educational nonprofit with a mission to unite the running industry to improve inclusion, visibility, and access for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.  This is a conversation about how running can be a tool for connection, empowerment, and change, but also how the running community, and how we think about diversity in the running community, is a microcosm for so much more.   In a time where we seem to see a movement in opposition to diversity, equity, inclusion, we are doing our best to double down on these values. At Charity Miles, we believe in inclusivity, and that our diversity is what makes us resilient. It also makes our life experiences so much more rich and enjoyable.   But most of all, because it's the right thing to do. So we're going to try to do our part, in this podcast at the very least, to bring you more voices like Kiera's. — This podcast is sponsored by our partners at UCan, a brand that I have personally relied on for years to fuel my performance, both in big events and every day. UCan provides steady, long lasting energy without the sugar roller coaster that's in other energy gels and drinks. The unique LiveSteady carbohydrate is a starch, not a sugar, that is trusted by elite athletes like Kira D'Amato and Emma Bates, weekend warriors, and everyday movers alike. Unlike fast burning sugars and gels, UCan delivers a slow, sustained release of energy to keep you going strong without the crashes. Whether you're training for a marathon, heading out for a long ride, or just staying active, UCan helps you feel and perform your best. "I hope that through my work, people saw my life." With a legendary 14-year career on the track and on the roads, professional 1500m runner and miler Jenny Simpson decided earlier this year that she was ready to retire. After spending 2024 diving into the world of marathoning, Jenny announced that she would run the TCS New York City Marathon as her final professional race.  Then, after crossing the finish line in 2:31:54 and settling onto the couch with a bowl of ice cream (Blue Bell mint chocolate chip), Jenny got an invitation — and an immediate jolt off that couch. "We'll see what happens. We'll all find out on Sunday.” A brief chat with Keira D'Amato, Emma Bates and Sara Hall before the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Unfortunately did not have the time to catch Betsy Saina. From our race preview on CITIUSMAG.com: The American showdown may become a chase for Emily Sisson's American record, as three of the five fastest women in U.S. history will be on the start line alongside 2021 Chicago runner-up Emma Bates, Chavez's pick to take down the record. Keira D'Amato, who held this record for just under nine months in 2022, will be racing 26.2 miles for the first time since moving to Utah to train with coach Ed Eyestone. We won't know until Sunday exactly what her and Eyestone's race plan looks like, but don't be surprised if she's in the mix for the top American crown. 2024 U.S. leader Betsy Saina, whose fifth-place finish in Tokyo in 2:19:17 was a huge leap forward, figures to be a prominent player as well. 2016 Olympic 1500m champion Matthew Centrowitz is set to be pacing this pack as they go after 2:18:29, so that will be something to keep an eye on even if the leaders are well ahead.

"I looked like a fainting goat at mile 20." Logan Aldridge just might be the real-life human version of a golden retriever. But as charming and funny and lovable as he may be, Logan isn't afraid to kick your butt and make you sweat. Logan is a Peloton instructor who is best known for his adaptive classes. When Logan was 13, he was wakeboarding with his family and the rope around his arm became entangled in the boat's propeller. It cut through all of Logan's arm muscles, down to the bone. His left arm — and he was a lefty at the time — had to be amputated. Remarkably, Logan never let this keep him down. He relearned how to do everything with his right arm and hand, and went on to become "The Strongest One-Armed Man on Earth." Most recently, Logan became a marathoner! But there was so much excitement. I feel like they really wanted it for me and still believe I could do something really special on that day so that was huge. When you're completely crumbling and people are still in awe of you that's wild, that's again what makes Boston a unique and special place." My guest for today's episode is Emma Bates fresh off another top American finish at the Boston Marathon in 2:27:14. For much of the first 20 miles, Emma led the pack with the confidence of a seasoned marathoner. You could not even tell that she was forced to heartbreakingly scratch from the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials due to a torn plantar. Before the race, she told me that she was confident in her fitness and believed she was back stronger than ever. Race day proved all of that. With every high-five exchanged and every cheer echoing in her ears, she talks about how she drew strength and excitement from the crowd in Boston. Even though, she won't be competing in the Olympics, her spirits is undiminished and plans to continue on her marathoning journey with a renewed sense of purpose. You asked for it, and you are getting it! Des and Kara recorded this freshy fresh Boston Marathon recap at 10:15 pm on Marathon Monday after just enough beers. The most important detail, perhaps, is that they shut down the bar at the end of this one. They were literally kicked out of the Sam Adams Taproom in downtown Boston to end the show, the perfect mic drop after an epic weekend of racing for the two of them. You will hear the full back story on Kara's successful mission to #destoryColt, including the complete shock to her system to navigate the challenges of the mass start. Bib pickup… “how does that work?” Gear check… “wait, what?” Lining up 20+ minutes early to be positioned well for the start… “this is crazy.” Despite these new hurdles, she “destroyed” Colt's PR by 7 seconds to finish in 18:50 and declare open season on the new hashtag #destroyKara as Colt now seeks his revenge. Then, of course, you hear highlights from Des's 11th Boston. Des talks about the difficulty of being marathon-sharp after a full weekend of events, shares her pre-race meal and pre-race vibes, and details the key moments in the race, including the words exchanged with Emma Bates when she caught the lead pack again at mile 15. Along the way, Kara gives her thoughts and emotions as the ultimate Des fangirl watching from the finish line on Boylston for the first time. Finally, they finish with the “Underbird” underdog of the week segment (sponsored by Oiselle), discussing an unlikely athlete who again made huge waves at the front of the race at the age of 44. As Chris recovers from the marathon, Kyle Merber, Eric Jenkins and Mac Fleet took over the show for a special episode of "Office Hourse" – where we answer our followers, readers and listeners' questions. We'll try and do more of these when we're all together in-person. Here are the questions answered in this week's episode: – Do you like the way the U.S. selects its marathon team through the Olympic Trials system? – How much alcohol do pros actually drink? – What do you think is reasonable mileage for a "working runner" to attempt when aiming for a hypothetical sub-2:45 marathon PR? – Why don't we host more professional cross country meets in the United States? – Shouldn't pro runners practice racing without pacers more? – What does it mean when pros say they "get work done" in their training or at races? Like PT/massage/chiropractor? Who is paying for that? – Why is there a Bowerman Track Club exodus? What is happening? – Is Kelvin Kiptum and his fast performance good for the sport? – Why don't runners like Scott Fauble and Emma Bates run more races than marathons? + more To submit a question to the pod, please email us or send a voice recording to thelapcount@gmail.com. "I just love marathons so much...I know that I'm gonna reach new heights every single time I do it. (With) the consistency I've had in each race and the progress that I've had, I just feel a lot of momentum, especially going into the trials. It doesn't matter what I do here (in Boston) physically on paper. Mentally, this was a big day for me just because I know that I can run with some of the best in the world – not just in the U.S. I think I'm definitely someone to contend with now and somebody to not be messed with now." What you're about to listen to is an episode of Dana Giordano's “More Than Running” Podcast on The CITIUS MAG Podcast Network. She was able to rush over from our Boston Marathon watchalong and then kick it with Emma Bates just hours after she finished fifth at the 2023 Boston Marathon and clocked a personal best of 2:22:10. That was just a mere 8 seconds shy of Shalane Flanagan's American course record.  I was blown away by Emma's confident pre-race statement that she was in the shape of her life. She said she views herself as a 2:18 or 2:19 woman right now. In the race, she backed it up and was not just mere talk. She proved it on the course by hanging with some of the best marathoners in the world into the final few miles.  Emma's joyous demeanor during the race was infectious. She was waving to her friends and family members on the course. In this fantastic conversation with Dana, she discusses all of that, how she broke down the race and the significant step forward that now has her thinking of taking a shot at the American record this fall. "I remember telling my friend that my goal in life is to be able to make everyone happy, and to be everything that everyone needs. And he was like, 'That sounds exhausting and impossible.' And I was like, 'Watch me! I can do it! I will bring joy to the masses!' And now, a year later, I'm like, 'What was I thinking? That DOES sound exhausting!'" Happy New Year! I kick off the start of every year here on the Ali on the Run Show with my annual review, of sorts. I call it the State of the Ali on the Run Show. It gives me a chance to reflect on the previous year, and set goals and intentions for the one ahead. By the numbers: In 2022, I released 135 episodes of the Ali on the Run Show, plus an additional eight episodes on Patreon, with 114 different guests. I hosted nine live shows — eight in person, one virtual — and partnered with 15 different brands and companies. In addition to regular episodes, 2022 saw the return of two listener-favorite series (Love on the Run and Ask Ali), and the introduction of three new series (Beyond the Run, Friendship Fest, and 26 Questions). The show saw 6.3 million downloads in 195 countries, and this week, the Ali on the Run Show surpassed 17 million lifetime downloads. Thank you for being here to help me celebrate the past, present, and future of the Ali on the Run Show. I promise to keep learning, growing, and showing up for myself, for this business, for the running community, and for all of you. SPONSORS: UCAN: Use code ALI for 20% off your next UCAN order.
