History of National Poetry Writing Month National Poetry Writing Month (also known as NaPoWriMo) is a creative writing project held annually in April in which participants attempt to write a poem each day for one month. NaPoWriMo coincides with National Poetry Month in the United States of America and Canada. This website is owned and operated by Maureen Thorson, a poet living in Washington, DC. Inspired by NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month), she started writing a poem a day for the month of April back in 2003, posting the poems on her blog. When other people started writing poems for April and posting them on their own blogs, Maureen linked to them. After a few years, so many people were doing NaPoWriMo that Maureen decided to launch an independent website for the project. My History with National Poetry Writing Month I started writing poetry in 1988 after I had been exposed to T.S. Elliot in my honors English class in high school. In 1992 I started reading my poetry publicly at Espresso Europia Coffee Shop in Abilene Tx while I was in the United States Air Force. While living in Rockford Illinois I published my first book of poetry Throwing Yourself at the Ground and Missing in 2007 followed by Postcards From Someone You Don't Know in 2008 Wisdom From the Sack in 2010 and Shaving Crop Circles In My Chest Hair in 2017. You can get copies of all of these books in my merch section. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021. What I am doing differently for Poetry Month For 2023 I am not going to be just writing poems in April, I will be writing poems all year round. Also, since I will be writing all year round, I am using a different source for my prompts. There is a blog called Think Written and you can find it here. I will also be performing these works at Katora Coffee House here in Fredericksburg Virginia on their Friday Night Snaps Open Mic Poetry reading. Some of the podcast episodes you will hear will be a live recording of me reading the poem to a live audience, other times I will be reading it in the comfort of my home studio. I do plan on posting my work to the NaPoWriMo site and interacting with the poets there and see if they want to read their work on this podcast. Todays Poetry Prompt Signs of the Times: How has a place you are familiar with changed over the past 10 years? Pacifying Uptown 14 April 2023 I lived in this neighborhood for a year or so Top floor, facing south, seeing Wrigley Field from a distance Two blocks from the Green Mill And the Red Line El Someone in the neighborhood had rescue greyhounds They would walk them around Stop for coffee and water at the local Starbucks The one that had a drive by when I was with my girl at the time A great Mexican restaurant that was open late Due to all the bars in the area Grabbing my first real horchata And just steps from Montrose Beach But I moved away To be with my wife To start a new life But I can't let go of the place So I signed up for the Uptown Facebook group And I get notifications daily The Uptown Theater that had been closed for decades Being revamped and reopened Meaning that the bookstore next door Had to clean up its act or move out That bookstore stank of cigarettes and cat piss Is no longer there Not able to get enough Chantix to quit their habit Not able to keep up with the bigger bookstores That closed down before I left I miss this place Even though I wasn't there that long Moving through the crowds And having my doc just a few blocks away Having my dentist who played the rat Packs greatest hits And picked up conversations started months in-between visits I didn't have to drive anywhere Even to get groceries Jewel, pronounced with an S at the end Again, was mere steps away But now they have changed the feeling They have changed the stores The rents have gone through the roof Now there is no one there I know The shops don't have the same feel Even the thugs that did the drive by have moved away to the burbs I'd never move my family back there It would be cost prohibitive It would be safer than when I lived there But it isn't the same space It isn't as special as it used to be Its tame and expensive And the reason why I lived there Was not for safety, was not for being tame I wanted to have excitement I wanted to have stories to tell I wanted different things than I do now Sign Up for the Create Art Podcast Newsletter Or Subscribe Here Reaching Out To The Podcast To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. Long before Wynton Marsalis arrived in the plush halls of Lincoln Center, jazz was often performed in far more dangerous venues. Greats like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday found their footing on the stages of America's most notorious vice districts, where big players in the mob, such as Al Capone and Mickey Cohen, called the shots. In his new book, Dangerous Rhythms, journalist T. J. English explores the complexities of this corner of the underworld, where venues like the Cotton Club explicitly upheld the racial dynamics of Jim Crow America while simultaneously providing Black musicians with otherwise unavailable opportunities. But the emerging civil rights movement disrupted this “glorified plantation system,” as English calls it, just as it eventually upended both the music and the mob.Go beyond the episode:T. J. In 1929, Al Capone was worth an inflation adjusted 1.5 Billion Dollars. Most speakeasies and night clubs serving illicit alcohol provided entertainment in some form, mostly jazz or a vocalist with a band. One of these entertainers named Joe E. Lewis was a regular performer at the Green Mill, a club that was owned by the Outfit. As compensation, Al Capone gave Jack McGurn a piece of the club's profits and when McGurn found out … Continue reading Al Capone (Volume 5, Episode 4) Part Two →

April 24th Poetry Prompt Today, I'd like to challenge you to channel your inner gumshoe, and write a poem in which you describe something with a hard-boiled simile. Feel free to use just one, or try to go for broke and stuff your poem with similes till it's . . . as dense as bread baked by a plumber, as round as the eyes of a girl who wants you to think she's never heard such language, and as easy to miss as a brass band in a cathedral. April 24th Poem The Donkey In Me 24 April 2022 20 times a day I seek the solitude of being an uncool kid Knowing what it is doing to my body Not caring for the smell it leaves behind Hiding my breath in mints and gum When my parents did it I hated it I didn't want to give them a kiss Because of the stench And here I am Being as stupid as a jack ass Because I am too scared To lose my pacifier I find myself wishing for the past some days Misremembering that the old times were not the good times And making the same mistakes in life Thinking it will work this time But it just happens again and again and again Waiting for the time it changes I try to climb a mountain But I am not a billy goat My hooves weren't made for these stones The one thing I know to do is push forward Even if the load is too much Looking at the carrot But not looking closely to see the rot Thinking the goal is what will bring happiness When I don't know where to find the goal I am as stubborn as a mule And I thought that used to be a good quality But being unbending is not what the great ones taught us Bend but don't break were the words that should have guided me But my long hair filled ears Didn't catch what was actually said Reaching Out To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. April 17th Poem Obidiah 17 April 2022 The first and only canine that allowed me to be their caretaker for a short while While we were staying at the parsonage because my father couldn't hold a job You were eternally happy, and I was not the kindest soul at the time This was an effort by my father to spite my mother Just another one of their never-ceasing battles He knew she was allergic to pet dander And he wanted someone to show him, unconditional love But it was up to me to feed, clean the mess and walk you It pained me that we had to keep you in the basement Watching you run up the stairs as I left for school Hearing you scratching at the door all night during storms But because I was afraid of the dark I never came to your rescue I don't remember asking for a pet As I knew this domicile was temporary But there we were, and you came into our lives Nipping my father's fingers Licking my face for hours You were the only friend at the time And then one day after school you were gone My brother said I left the basement door open And you escaped sometime during the day But the locks were still in place and the screen door was rusted shut So, I took my beating that night In the shadow of the church that housed us We named you after a minor prophet in the Old Testament One of the shortest books in the bible It wouldn't have mattered if I had known you were released to fend for yourself There wasn't much this 12-year-old could do to keep you alive And I played stupid when one of the kids at school Told me about a stray dog that his family had taken in Reaching Out To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. Matt Ulery, ubiquitous Chicago bassist and composer, brings his Delicate Charms quintet to Madison's North Street Cabaret on October 15th. This first-call sideman on so many of Chicago's coolest gigs also leads a handful of his own bands, and has released albums under his own name numbering about a baker's dozen. His latest release "Delicate Charms Live at the Green Mill" — just out this month — was recorded during the pandemic, and deftly captures the ambiance and atmosphere of this moment in time.
FRIENDS, Our second show back in the Green Mill was a baller birthday bash for a not-quite-but-maybe-almost post-COVID America. Despite the world literally burning, several of our old-school fave contributors still made a big splash, to everyone's delight. As we attempted to return ever-so-gradually to normalcy, the news gods blessed us with some true silliness—enjoy the tale of the man stopped by Belfast police who insisted the cocaine discovered between his buttcheeks must have been placed there by somewhere else—as well as challenging solemn occasions, like the passing of Donald Rumsfeld. In addition to freshly written current-events segments, swinging tunes by Chicago's great jazz singer Paul Marinaro, musical comedy by our own Bill Larkin, and standup comedy from visiting Houston-based funnyman Zahid Dewji round out an excellent audio magazine experience. In a few weeks this currently public podcast is going back to being an exclusive thank you, accessible only to our monthly donors. But we still wanted to thank you for sticking with us through so much by sharing it with everyone for a little while longer. For now feel free to alert a fellow Machete fan that this episode is available to all. Thanks, as ever, for the support that makes it happen. And dig this hot lineup: MASTHEAD Bill Larkin Zahid Dewji Atra Asdou and Gary Pascal Paul Marinaro Sorhab Forouzesh Mark Chrisler The Braided Janes

FRIENDS, At long last, the wait is finally over. This past Saturday afternoon (June 26, 2021)—despite the very rare Chicago tornado warning just a few hours before showtime and a torrential downpour that could have kept folks away—the Paper Machete officially reopened its run at the Green Mill. A stellar cast and an outrageously enthusiastic audience brought us back to life in a most rousing and entertaining afternoon. We've said it before and will continue to repeat it: It was YOUR support that pulled the Machete through this awful period. On behalf of both Machete artists and our amazing audiences everywhere, we're beyond grateful. That said, let's get back down to business now, shall we? On this episode Fridge is joined by John Dell'Osso the former Mayor of Cotati and by Certified Professional Dog Trainer Devan Amundsen of Bergin University. John's parents actually owned Penngrove's Green Mill Inn from the 1970's until very recently when he and his family sold the property to Bonnie Bergin of the Bergin University of Canine Studies where Devan now teaches. We're talking about the delicious Green Mill Dry Hopped Pilsner brewed in celebration of this legendary local landmark as well as topics such as; the rich history and the bright future of the Green Mill Inn, everyones mutual admiration of dogs in general and the difficulties of running any operation in a pandemic. Whether that be local government, a dog training academy or even a brewery. This one really is "beer at its best."
Happy Valentines Day, Machete listeners! Whether or not YOU'RE feeling amorous on this frozen, quarantined holiday, we're pretty sure embattled QAnon ambassadress Marjorie Taylor Green is hot-to-trot enough for all of us (at least if the most recent reporting on her extracurricular love life is to be believed). So why not let our MTG satire melt the frost off your disposition, and enjoy several other bits of Machete comedy and music from our past and present with this Valentine's Day podcast. This edition contains Green Mill performances from Janeane Garofalo and Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me!'s Brian Babylon, and several stalwart Machete voices. As ever, we are beyond grateful for the support you've continued to offer us, and we desperately miss creating a weekly live show for you in Uptown's most renowned gangster jazz club. We are especially thankful for our monthly donors and those of you that have made financial contributions during the pandemic. You're the reason we're still here, and we deeply appreciate you. Meanwhile, as we all wait for a literal shot in the arm, may this metaphorical one keep you vaccinated against midwinter blues and post-acquittal blahs. Stay safe. And love the one you're with. The Untouchables (1987) d. Brian De Palma Starring:Kevin CostnerSean ConneryAndy GarciaRobert De NiroBilly Drago This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan throw Italian and Irish racial slurs around like its 1929. Steve tells us about growing up as a little street scamp on the mean streets of Chicago, Ryan is the only lapsed Baptist in the world with a patron saint, and the guys run their Sean Connery impressions straight into the ground. After building an empire with bootleg alcohol, legendary crime boss Al Capone (Robert De Niro) rules Chicago with an iron fist. Though Prohibition agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) attempts to take Capone down, even his best efforts fail due to widespread corruption within the Windy City's police force.
