From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Showcasing dance from across SomaliaSabrin Nur is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Minneapolis, and they are excited to see “Dhaxal-suge: the Somali Museum Dance Troupe Showcase.” The Somali Museum has maintained a youth dance troupe since its inception, teaching young people the widely varying folk dances from across Somalia. This will be the first performance by the museum's dance group residency program. There are two upcoming performances: at the Paramount Center for the Arts in St. Cloud, Tuesday, May 13, at 6 p.m., and at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis next Sunday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m.Sabrin reflects on the themes of the show: The storyline is “when a beloved leader falls, who carries the crown?” and I think the question they're asking is a big question for Gen Z and also the Somali millennials who have grown up in the wake of the war, right? I'm 25 years old. For people like me, we've never known a peaceful Somalia. We've had a lot of our elders looking down to us and being like, “This is your history. This is what we used to be like. Now, what are you gonna do?” They've put a lot of responsibility on our shoulders, and a lot of us are ready to take it on, but it's like, what kind of future do we envision for ourselves? How do we carry that responsibility? How do we wear that crown?— Sabrin NurBooks meet architecture meet sculpturePeggy Korsmo-Kennon of Eagan, a former museum and arts administrator, recommends that people see “Building/Books | Karen Wirth: A Retrospective Exhibition” at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts Main Gallery in Minneapolis. The exhibition spans 40 years of Wirth's work, and the pieces spread through the space include architecture, photography, sculpture, books, and the spaces where these disciplines meet. The exhibition is on view through June 8.The exhibition also marks the 25th anniversary of the Open Book Building and the 40th anniversary of the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.Peggy says: Karen has an extraordinary ability to think spatially and structurally, creating work with both conceptual depth and visually engaging images. Her projects range from small handheld artist books to major public artworks. Her art is playful, both thought-provoking, blends clever wordplay with striking visuals. You'll see this in her handwritten text that spirals through the Gale See staircase and in the whimsical assemblages of the Grammar of Architecture. Upstairs there are more works: my favorite are her “Follies.” She takes books and found architectural objects and put them together in a really interesting way.— Peggy Korsmo-KennonPhoto exhibit asks us not to look away from homelessnessGabriel Brito of Minneapolis is a graduating senior at the University of Minnesota and an Arts and Entertainment reporter for the Minnesota Daily. He wants people to know about “No More Turning Away,” a photography exhibit about homelessness in the Twin Cities by photographer David Fallon. The exhibit is on view at the Kenwood Burroughs Gallery in Minneapolis through May 31.This exhibit is a fundraiser for People Incorporated, a nonprofit mental health provider that also serves people experiencing homelessness.Gabriel says: [David] spent months in the Twin Cities, photographing homelessness in a very raw, real, captivating way. His photographs are raw, unflinching depictions of life on the street meant to challenge our society's tendency to look away from homelessness.— Gabriel Brito

Overthinking About Social Media Comparison

You log onto Instagram and within five seconds of scrolling, your algorithm has your self-esteem in a death grip. It serves you: 1) a blissed-out engagement announcement from a former high school classmate, 2) a carousel of glamorous vacation pics from a coworker, 3) a random influencer looking flawless on a rooftop... and now, you immediately feel like garbage. These people have NOTHING to do with your life, and yet social media has forced them into your brain space. What's worse? Their beauty, wealth, and success seem to be directly depleting yours. What causes us to irrationally compare-despair on platforms like Instagram and TikTok? What makes those illusory personas feel so materially "threatening" to us, even though we know that social media "isn't real" and no one's life is perfect? Is there an evolutionary explanation? How have our comparison habits changed or gotten worse since the early days of social media? And how can we feel better? Joining host Amanda Montell (@amanda_montell) are two special guests, here to help soothe our thought spirals surrounding social media comparison: Jemma Sbeg (@jemmasbeg), host of The Psychology of Your 20s podcast, and Britt Frank (@britt_frank), neuropsychotherapist and author of The Science of Stuck. - Get tickets to see Amanda on tour! Such is one of the many compelling thought exercises in favor of polyamory, a relationship structure that is by no means new, but has experienced an explosive recent surge in popular media—everywhere from New Yorker thinkpieces to Succession plot lines to reality shows like Couple to Throuple. Some questions, though: Is polyamory really more "natural" than monogamy? Why do some people make being "poly" their whole personality? Who even has time for multiple partners? (And is it prude to ask such things???). This week's episode is actually a feed drop from the Magical Overthinkers podcast (because host Amanda is *not* a podcasting monogamist ), featuring the brilliant philosopher and host of the Overthink podcast, Dr. Ellie Anderson. Raul Gomez, longtime publisher of the High Plains Reader in Fargo recalls rushing to put the paper to bed by midnight so they could drive over to Ralphs' Corner Bar in Moorhead to cap off the week. Ralph's was a fixture of the music scene in northwest Minnesota, drawing big names from the punk and indie music scene. The bar was demolished in 2005. Gomez says he was pleased with the way the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County paid homage to the venue in its Ralph's Corner Bar exhibit at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead. Each of the four rooms in the exhibit “captures different styles and vibes of Ralph's.” One of the exhibit's four rooms looks like the bar itself, complete with wood paneling, booths, and a wall that looks like a pool table. Other rooms record memories of patrons and pay homage to its musical history, including instruments, band memorabilia and posters. The exhibit is on view through June 25. Musician Sarah Larsson can't wait to get on the dance floor at the Minneapolis Afrobeats Dance Party Saturday at the Cedar Cultural Center, featuring some of her favorite local DJs and artists. Fanaka Nation, an Afropop/Afrotrap artist, is hosting. DJ Fawzi, whom Larsson calls the “go-to greatest Somali woman DJ in town,” will do a set, along with DJ K-Little and a live performance from singer/songwriter Carolyne Naomi, who recently released a new EP. Larsson loves the energy of these performers. This is an all-ages event. Doors open at 7 p.m. for an 8 p.m. show. If you're looking for unusual musical theater productions this holiday, Minneapolis actor Anissa Lubbers recommends “Striking 12,” a musical inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's story “The Little Match Girl.” Set on a cold, contemporary New Year's Eve, an overworked businessman plans to hunker down alone at home when he encounters a woman selling holiday lights who is determined to spark some holiday joy. Lubbers enjoys that the band providing the music, GrooveLily, also interacts with the performers on stage. “Striking 12” runs through Dec. 18 at the Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul. The show was staged by Minneapolis Musical Theatre, which specializes in rare musicals.

Visual artist Alison Price says she is regularly struck by the power of A. Drew Hammond's paintings and collages. Some of Hammond's works are fun and playful — she particularly likes his anthropomorphic frogs — while others take on Black history and current events in a way that stops her in her tracks. Case in point, she says, is his work “Melon Colony,” in which watermelon seeds are packed in the formation of people on a slave ship. His thoughtfully layered collages always encourage a closer look, says Price.  A. Drew Hammond shares a studio with his wife, artist and dancer Beverly Hammond, in the Northrup King Building in northeast Minneapolis. His work is also on view in the Ramsey County Courthouse, the Grandview Square Financial building in Edina, Minn., and at the Community Commons at the Mall of America. Courtesy of A. Guitarist and vocalist Julian Manzara was a Cedar Commissions artist in 2017-2018, and he recommends checking out this year's contingent when they perform this weekend. This year's six Cedar Commissions artists will each perform 30 minutes of original work, drawing upon Welsh bardic tradition, African stringed instruments, Hmong folk song and more.  “It's kind of like a musical buffet of stuff you've never tried before,” says Manzara. “I would say just go, don't worry about wrapping your mind around exactly what you're going to see. You can trust the Cedar in terms of their curation, and it will be a great experience that you can just dive into regardless of how familiar you are with these emerging artists.” Following last year's virtual event, artists this year will be back on the Cedar Cultural Center stage in Minneapolis. Friday's show features Carlisle Evans Peck, Nyttu Chongo and Maddie Thies. Saturday's lineup is Vie Boheme, Alicia Thao and Kat Parent. The concerts start at 7:30 p.m. Gospel singer Robert Robinson has performed at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Community in Minneapolis in the past, and he knows the strong lineup of performers who will take the stage on Sunday evening for a concert celebrating Black History Month. The event is entitled “Oh Let us Build This Place,” and it's an evening of music and historical vignettes that examines 75 years on the south side of Minneapolis. T. Mychael Rambo, Thomasina Petrus, Carmen Michelle and Gwen Matthews will perform with Dan Chouinard as host and band leader.  Robinson says the evening will be “education and entertainment all wound up into one,” as the artists and others reflect on the experience of African Americans in the area where the church is located. Included in that history is the building of Interstate 35W, which displaced thousands of south Minneapolis African American homes and businesses beginning in the late 1950s.  The event takes place 7-9 p.m. on Sunday. Masks are required, as is proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test result from within 72 hours.

TKP, developed by creative writer/interdisciplinary artist Rebecca Nichloson, engages creative writers from historically marginalized communities in immersive virtual experiences centered on building solidarity and empathy between different communities across Minnesota. The methodology utilizes a human-centered design approach to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges each community faces and generates social justice/social equity-informed poetry that supports community-engagement and social change. This cohort includes readings by: Rebecca Nichloson, Anthony Ceballos, Wilt Hodges, and Duaba Unenra. Anthony Ceballos received his BFA in Creative Writing from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 2016 he was selected to be a Loft Literary Center Mentor Series mentee. He can be found penning staff recommendations at Birchbark Books and Native Arts. Duaba Unenra is a survivor of the reconstruction process in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. He is an artist, community organizer, and scholar who looks at how forces of neoliberalism took advantage of openings created by environmental disasters in Haiti and New Orleans to reinforce anti-Black, anti-poor, anti-woman, and anti-queer living and ways of being. Unenra engages in mutual aid and building counter-sites as social tools for self-determination and healing in Black, Indigenous, Brown, and other communities, including in institutions of higher education. Wilt Hodges is a poet, essayist, and community reporter. He received his degree from Columbia University. A past Minnesota State Artist Grant recipient and Givens Fellow, he resides in Saint Paul. How did a Black woman from Texas become one of the most well-known civil right activists in Minnesota? After seven decades of speaking up and standing up, of fighting for fairness in voting, housing, education, and employment, Dr. Josie Johnson has finally written her memoir. "Hope in the Struggle" gives us an opportunity to not only learn about her, but to learn from her. Dr. Johnson's story began in segregated Texas, where her father organized against the Poll Tax, launching her on a lifetime of activism which brought her to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, where she cast her vote for Barack Obama for president. Her memoir offers a close-up picture of what that struggle has entailed, whether working as a community organizer for the Minneapolis Urban League or lobbying for fair housing and employment laws, investigating civil rights abuses or co-chairing the Minnesota delegation to the March on Washington, becoming the first African American to serve on the University of Minnesota's Board of Regents or creating the university's Office of the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs with a focus on minority affairs and diversity. An intimate view of civil rights history in the making, "Hope in the Struggle" is a uniquely inspiring life story for these current dark and divisive times, a testament to how one determined soul can make the world a better place. ESFL and RCHS are pleased to present Dr. Johnson in conversation with an activist from a younger generation, Tish Jones. A poet, organizer, and educator from St. Paul, Ms. Jones is Founder & Executive Director of TruArtSpeaks, and she has had an impact on artist-activists from coast to coast. She has performed at The Walker Art Center, Intermedia Arts, The Cedar Cultural Center and more. Ms. Jones' work can be found in the Minnesota Humanities Center' anthology, Blues Vision: African American Writing from Minnesota (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2015), the 2011 and 2013 Saint Paul Almanac, the Loft Literary Center's Nation of Immigrants audio CD highlighting the voices of their longstanding Equilibrium Spoken Word Series, and many more spaces. HIJACK is the Minneapolis-based choreographic collaboration of Kristin Van Loon and Arwen Wilder. HIJACK is the confluence and clash of two independent compositional/kinesthetic impulses. Their dances embrace juxtaposition. Their dances house unlikely intimates and question “who is the enemy?” Specializing in the inappropriate, HIJACK is best known for "short-shorts:" pop song-length miniatures designed to deliver a sharp shock.Over the last 25 years they have created over 100 dances and performed in venues ranging from proscenium to barely-legal. HIJACK manipulates context by employing a site-specific approach to every performance and toying with audiences' expectations. HIJACK has performed in New York (at DTW, PS122, HERE ArtCenter, Catch/Movement Research Festival, La Mama, Dixon Place, Chocolate Factory), Japan, Russia, Central America, Ottawa, Chicago, Colorado, New Orleans, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco, at Fuse Box Festival in Austin Texas, and Bates Dance Festival in Maine and Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation. HIJACK questions where and for whom contemporary dance is performed, gigging regularly in both social settings and concert settings.  HIJACK has enjoyed long relationships with Red Eye Collaborations (as part of their Critical Core), Bryant Lake Bowl Theater where their 1996 "Take Me To Cuba" was the theater’s first ever dance concert), Zenon Dance School (where they have taught every Wednesday morning for 18 years), and Walker Art Center where they have performed in every imaginable context including the opening of the McGuire Theater, at Dyke Night, First Free Saturday children’s programming, in the sculpture garden, and in the light of the Benson Film Collection in the Mediateque. In 2013, Walker Art Center commissioned “redundant, ready, reading, radish, Red Eye” to celebrate twenty years of HIJACK and Contact Quarterly published the chapbook “Passing for Dance: A HIJACK Reader”.Their 2018-20 projects include: performing End Plays with Lisa Nelson, curating and hosting Future Interstates (a series of dance improvisation performances initiated by HIJACK and Body Cartography in 2015), creation and premiere of Jealousy (a collaboration with sculptor Ryan Fontaine and lighting designer Heidi Eckwall at Hair + Nails Gallery), touring an evening of dance with films to micro-cinemas and managing & dancing in the 2019 McKnight International Choreography residency of Galia Eibenshutz at Cedar Cultural Center.
