Paul Hawken has spent more than fifty years asking the same question in different registers: what does it look like when human commerce rejoins the community of life rather than consuming it? He was a 19-year-old press coordinator for Martin Luther King Jr.'s march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. He cured his own lifelong asthma through food at 19, and went on to found Erewhon, one of the first natural food companies in America. He co-founded Smith & Hawken, wrote nine books translated into 30 languages across 50 countries, and co-founded Project Drawdown, which modeled the 100 most substantive solutions to reverse global warming. His most recent book, Carbon: The Book of Life, reframes carbon not as the villain of the climate story, but as the invisible thread connecting every living thing on Earth. In this rich and wide-ranging episode, Paul unpacks the ideas behind Carbon, exploring: The first breath: how a ten-day rice and tea fast at 19 cured an asthma that three doctors and a lifetime of medication never could, and what that taught him about the difference between fixing a symptom and restoring a relationship Why he now says Project Drawdown failed by his own measure, what's wrong with "Net Zero" as a target, and the difference between stabilizing the overflow and draining the tub Carbon as "the currency of abundance, the central bank of evolutionary growth, and the most socially adept entrepreneur in the pantheon of life," and what it means that this is not the language of a pollutant The naming problem: how the Enlightenment turned forests into cellulose, soil into dirt, and animals into objects, and why our climate response keeps failing because it uses the same framework that created the crisis What it means that humans are 0.01% of living biomass, and what the other 99.99% knows about running stable carbon cycles for hundreds of millions of years without summits, frameworks, or pledges The economics of a whale, valued at over two million dollars alive versus forty thousand dead, and whether pricing nature protects it or just folds it into the logic that nearly destroyed it The hidden world beneath our feet: mycorrhizal networks connecting 90% of land plants, 2,500 gigatons of carbon stored in soil, and why losing just 8% of it would dwarf current fossil fuel emissions Why cooperation, not competition, is the actual operating principle of the living world, and what that says about the economic system we've built on top of it Awe versus optimism: why Paul says he isn't optimistic, but is in awe of the people making a true difference, and what that distinction means in practice This is a deeply personal and quietly radical conversation about commerce, the body, and what it might mean to stop fighting carbon and start rejoining the community of life that has been regulating it all along. Learn more about Paul's work at paulhawken.com, and find his latest book, Carbon: The Book of Life, wherever books are sold.

Val Emanuel and Rebecca Caputo, co-founders of Rif Care, share the story behind their brand, the first period care company to make products from hemp fiber and what it took to build that supply chain from scratch. Val and Rebecca talk about what conscious business really means in the feminine care space, where greenwashing is rampant and efficacy can't be sacrificed for sustainability's sake. They dig into the barriers they pushed through with scouring manufacturers, connecting dots across countries, and even how to deliver their first products themselves. We also zoom out on the broader women's health movement gaining momentum in CPG, and why they believe that when women are healthy, the planet is healthy. They wrap up by reflecting on the Naturally Network minority-owned fellowship and how the cohort they went through didn't just open doors, they became family.Takeaways:Rif Care makes period care products out of organic cotton and hemp fiber - pads, period underwear, tampons, and thong panty linersThey were the first company to make period products out of hemp fiber, pioneering a supply chain that didn't exist when they started. The hemp supply chain was built brick by brick, including connecting their manufacturer in one country with a hemp supplier in another just to get their first prototypes made.Hemp proved to be an ideal material — abundant, fast-growing, and sourced from upcycled fiber, making their supply chain both resilient and sustainable.Conscious business for Rif Care means efficacy first — a period product has to actually work and be made with the best materials possible. The period care industry has a significant greenwashing problem, and Rif Care's commitment to transparency is a direct response to that.Val and Rebecca see women's health as one of the most exciting and underserved frontiers in CPG — from PMS to menopause — and actively partner with and amplify other brands in the space.Women still receive only 3% of venture funding, yet Val and Rebecca see enormous opportunity for investors, partners, and brand ambassadors in the women's health space.Through the Naturally Network minority-owned fellowship, Rif Care learned how to build sales decks, talk to retailers, and develop distribution channels that helped them reach and maintain the number one spot at Erewhon.Sound Bites:"We're going to walk the walk. We're going to talk the talk.""There were people trying to make hemp feminine care for 10 years and we got a sample in like two weeks. It was completely a paper wall.""I don't drive a truck, you know? We had to learn how to drive a U-Haul to pick up our products and deliver them to distributors.""There's so many more opportunities for companies to fill that gap in women's health.""If women are healthy, the planet is healthy.""The people that we did the Naturally Network Fellowship with are still our best friends. We cry together, we laugh together, and we have kept in touch more than any other accelerator that all of us have ever been in."Links:Val Emanuel LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/valemanuel/Rebecca Caputo LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccamcaputo/Rif Care: https://rifcare.com/Rif Care LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/rifcares/Rif Care on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rifcare/Rif Care on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@rifcare...Naturally Network: www.naturallynetwork.org…Brands for a Better World Episode Archive - http://brandsforabetterworld.com/Brands for a Better World on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/brand-for-a-better-world/Modern Species - https://modernspecies.com/Modern Species on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/modern-species/Gage Mitchell on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/gagemitchell/…Print Magazine Design Podcasts - https://www.printmag.com/categories/printcast/…Heritage Radio Network - https://heritageradionetwork.org/Heritage Radio Network on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/heritage-radio-network/posts/Heritage Radio Network on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HeritageRadioNetworkHeritage Radio Network on X - https://x.com/Heritage_RadioHeritage Radio Network on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/heritage_radio/Heritage Radio Network on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@heritage_radio…The Food Institute - https://foodinstitute.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Long before SIMPLi hit shelves at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Erewhon, and Wegmans, Sarela and Matt were traveling globally working directly with farmers to source regenerative organic ingredients and rebuild transparency at the root level of food production. What started as a sourcing mission eventually became SIMPLi — a pantry brand focused on traceability, regenerative agriculture, and proving that better food systems can scale without cutting corners. In this episode, Sarela and Matt break down how they built relationships with farming communities around the world, why most consumers have no idea where their pantry staples actually come from, and what it takes to create a mission-driven food brand in a category dominated by massive incumbents. Julian Tcherassi didn't start Magiktea trying to compete with traditional tea brands. He found something most people had never heard of — palo azul, a tree bark used for centuries as a natural kidney remedy. When brewed, it does something unexpected. It turns bright blue in the light, thanks to its high concentration of polyphenols — with studies showing it contains up to 8x more antioxidants than green tea. That discovery became Magiktea — an alkaline, caffeine-free tea built around function, not just flavor. Today, Magiktea is stocked in over 1,000 retail locations, including Erewhon, Vitamin Shoppe, Bristol Farms, Lassens, Chamberlin's, and Fruitful Yield — growing quietly in the better-for-you beverage space. Leah Marcus and Yasaman Bakhtiar are the co-founders of Good Girl Snacks, the brand that turned a TikTok obsession into a full-blown business. These two best friends didn't come from food. They came from corporate. Leah was in marketing at a tech startup, Yas was at an auction house debating whether to go back for her master's. What changed everything was a lot of TikTok scrolling and asking one question: why is everyone obsessed with pickles right now, and why isn't there a brand that actually feels like us? So at 23, they quit their jobs, hired a food scientist, found a manufacturer in the middle of Massachusetts, and started building. Documenting every messy, unfiltered moment along the way on social. By the time they launched in February 2024, they already had a community waiting. They sold out in under three months, closed a pre-seed round in two weeks, had a collab with Khloé Kardashian, and are now on shelves at Erewhon, Whole Foods, and Bristol Farms. All with zero dollars spent on ads.In this episode, we get into all of it. The leap they took before they were ready, the social media playbook they built from scratch, and the production nightmares that would have made most people quit. But this isn't really a story about pickles. It's about what it actually feels like to bet on yourself when the odds aren't clearly in your favor. Leah and Yas are proof that the founders who win aren't always the most experienced. They're just the ones who refused to stop.In this episode, we'll talk about:* Leaving corporate jobs and feeling the pull toward entrepreneurship. [02:12]* How a TikTok pickle trend sparked the idea for Good Girl Snacks. [03:58]* Doing the research before quitting their jobs. [06:52]* The confidence that comes from building with the right co-founder. [09:10]* Taking the leap and launching the business in 2023. [11:20]* Building hype on social media months before the product existed. [12:33]* Creating a viral content series to grow an audience. [14:30]* Why consistency and daily posting built early momentum. [18:19]* Finding the first manufacturing partner and navigating production challenges. [19:36]* “Cucumber Gate” and the realities of building a food product. [23:06]* Turning startup mishaps into viral storytelling content. [26:31]* Why resilience and problem-solving matter more than glamour in entrepreneurship. [29:00]* Building community through events, activations, and everyday customers. [31:15]* How influencer relationships and brand partnerships fueled growth. [32:19]* The Khloe Kardashian moment and what celebrity exposure really does for a brand. [34:09]* Landing early retail wins with Pop Up Grocer, Erewhon, and Whole Foods. [38:04]* Raising their first investment round after proving product-market fit. [40:00]* The long-term vision for Good Girl Snacks beyond pickles. [42:23]* Lessons about entrepreneurship they learned the hard way. [43:23]* The sacrifices founders make that people rarely see. The eldest grandchild of President Trump, 18-year-old Kai Trump, was feeling the heat from her latest YouTube channel vlog, so she changed the name of her video, but left the content up. Now entitled, “I Tried The World’s Most Expensive Grocery Store," the video shows Kai aghast at the prices she’s racking up while purchasing expensive organic products. Despite the name change, it’s still racking up thousands of angry comments, calling Kai tone deaf and offensive given the state of the world right now.
