On this episode of The Kara Goldin Show, we're joined by Jeff Shardell, Founder and CEO of Humble Brands—the clean personal care brand that's redefining what “natural” can (and should) be. From deodorants that actually work to sustainability initiatives that go far beyond the label, Jeff has built Humble into a trusted name at Whole Foods, Erewhon, and thousands of other retailers across the country. Before founding Humble, Jeff was a Silicon Valley veteran—part of the early team at Google and co-founder of Gloss.com, which sold to Estée Lauder. But it was a radically different chapter of life that sparked the idea for Humble: a decade spent storm chasing and reconnecting with the basics. That journey led him to start making clean, effective deodorant out of his kitchen—and the rest is history. We talk about why Jeff left tech to start over, what it really takes to build a brand from scratch in the crowded wellness space, and how a simple formula with four ingredients launched a national movement. He shares how Humble has grown thoughtfully—without compromising quality, values, or his own vision of what health should look like.If you care about clean living, purpose-driven business, or the wild twists that can lead to a breakout brand—this one's for you. Kristin Charbo is the Co-Founder and CEO of Glonuts, the better-for-you donut brand redefining indulgence with clean ingredients and low sugar. But her journey didn't start in food or even in business. Kristin spent over 15 years in luxury hospitality, opening hotels for brands like Mandarin Oriental and PUBLIC in New York. It wasn't until a PCOS diagnosis in her early 20s that she was forced to rethink her relationship with food, wellness, and ultimately, her career. That health wake-up call eventually sparked the idea for a nostalgic, blood-sugar-friendly treat she wished existed. What started as a “healthy donut thing” from a coffee cart quickly took on a life of its own, leading Kristin and her partner Grover to deliver over 100,000 donuts from their one-bedroom apartment and even use their wedding money to rebrand the business. Today, Glonuts is one of the most exciting brands in wellness snacking, stocked everywhere from Erewhon to H-E-B markets and other retailers all across the US.In this episode, Kristin gets real about what it actually takes to build something from nothing—when you don't have a blueprint, just a product people love and the grit to figure it out. She opens up about the mental rollercoaster of entrepreneurship, the scrappy early days of hand-delivering donuts, and the power of iterating on feedback. We talk about the challenges of fundraising as a female founder, how she built a network of powerhouse women who now double as investors and advisors, and why personal growth is just as critical as business growth. Whether you're dreaming of starting your own thing or in the thick of figuring it out as you go, Kristin's story is your reminder that success isn't always linear but it always starts with taking the first messy step.In this episode, we'll talk to Kristin about:* Glonuts began as an unexpected leap into entrepreneurship. This one has it all—awkward secrets, viral drama, weird dealbreakers, and a trivia showdown that ends in a zero-zero tie. Buckle up. We kick off the show with a viral debate that has the internet split: a 32-year-old former prison officer turned adult content creator went viral after saying women should never date men who earn less than $150K a year. That set off a flurry of reactions—some agreeing, others accusing her of being out of touch. We get into the numbers, the logic (or lack of), and what it says about dating culture right now. Then, it’s time for Dirty Little Secret—and this one’s messy. A woman confesses she’s six months pregnant with her best friend’s brother’s baby… while engaged to someone else. And there’s a paternity twist that none of us saw coming. Next up: a First Date Follow Up with Dominic, who planned a Marvel-themed sensory experience for his date, including a blindfold and the Avengers theme. Sounds charming—until we learn he ended the night with a lullaby. Yes, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Let’s just say that didn’t land. Later in You vs. Victoria, Shirley and her daughter squad take on Victoria in a trivia battle, and somehow nobody scores a single point. It’s a chaotic draw, but they still walk away with Lil Wayne tickets. Also: Jubal calls a frustrated cable customer and transfers him through the absurd "Last Name" and "Zip Code" departments in a Jubal Phone Prank that nearly ends in a broken phone. Then, in Nina’s What’s Trending, we learn that Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) almost missed her flight after TSA flagged her for bringing suspicious sunflower seeds from Erewhon. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s original albums are suddenly spiking in sales—after she re-released all of them. Swifties, explain. In To Catch a Cheater, Mason suspects his girlfriend Talia of cheating after she calls him “Jason” in bed. Turns out—she was thinking of another man… Jason Bateman. From Ozark. Seriously. Finally, we go off the rails with a viral thread about absurd dating dealbreakers. No seafood? No go. TikToks at the gym? Red flag. And don’t get us started on jean preferences or baby toes. And in today’s second edition of Nina’s What’s Trending, Tinder rolls out height filters. Blake Lively walks back emotional distress claims in court. And in China, you can now rent a fake job for $5—vanilla folders and all. Your all-access pass to the most hilarious, outrageous, and unpredictable moments from The Jubal Show! On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Amy Dell, founder of Sababa Foods, which produces authentic Middle Eastern foods with a modern-day flair.     Dell's first product, Saturday Sauce, is her take on matbucha. It is a slightly spicy tomato-based sauce, like the base of shakshuka. It's like the Jewish version of Sunday sauce.   “Sunday sauce generally refers to [what] an Italian family's grandma is making [on] Sunday,” Dell explains. “Tomato sauce, stewing for hours … [that] you use it in so many different ways and formats.”   Both are good, simple red sauces that go with just about everything. Dell uses it for Moroccan fish, sheet pan chicken, so many different things.   Dell grew up in the restaurant industry and is still deli-adjacent. Her father, who is from Israel, owned Mr. Broadway kosher restaurant in New York City. Her husband, Jake, is the third-generation owner of Katz's Deli.     “The first date that I went on with my husband, I was like, ‘Oh, you smell like pastrami, that's a familiar smell,'” says Dell, who is “Team Pastrami” all the way.   “Pastrami just melts in your mouth,” she says. “But I will say my favorite thing at Katz's, which might be controversial, is the turkey; the turkey is underrated and it's delightful.”   Amy Dell talks about growing up in a deli, marrying into one, and creating Sababa foods. She also shares some of her favorite ways to use Saturday Sauce, including her recipe for Tunisian tuna toast, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts.    Learn more about Amy Dell and Saturday Sauce at Sababa-foods.com and follow @Sababa_foods on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. During that time - and after her father passed - Anastasia turned to cooking, her Greek-American family’s love language, to heal. That personal connection to cooking turned into more than a hobby when Anastasia decided to launch Fancy Peasant, the household pantry staple you can now find in stores like Erewhon. In this episode, Anastasia opens up about the grief of losing her father, learning to embrace her heritage with open arms, and the nuts and bolts of the business. This episode was originally aired April 26, 2024 In this conversation with best selling author and activist Paul Hawken, we discuss the reframing of our relationship with nature by moving away from the concept of "othering" ourselves, and more towards the integration of our interconnectedness. Paul speaks of the cultural disconnect, the role of language in shaping our perception of the environment, and how crucial it is to engage directly with the natural world. Hawken's vast experience, including starting the first natural food company (Erewhon) in the U.S. and working with Martin Luther King Jr., as well as his involvement in founding Regeneration and NEXUS, are all a result of a lifetime of pursuing solutions to our climate crisis. He shares how he views carbon and climate change through a lens of interconnectedness and flow rather than as isolated problems. He also talks about his upcoming book, 'Carbon, the Book of Life,' the significance of soil regeneration, societal shifts and the connection between joy and sustainability as well as the power of individual and community action in the face of environmental challenges.

One of PJ Monte's early sales pitches startled a woman so much that she clutched her purse. A few weeks later, PJ's tomato sauce was on the shelves of her husband's influential grocery store. It's one of dozens of stories that PJ, a streetwise, fedora-wearing entrepreneur, has about the development of Monte's Fine Foods, makers of premium, clean label pasta and sauces. Monte's launched in 2020 and is an homage to PJ's family, which has a long history in the restaurant and hospitality industries. A former clothing designer, PJ shifted his focus to food five years ago and began selling jars of homemade sauce out of the trunk of his car. Today, the brand markets a trio of tomato sauces that are produced in small batches and made with carefully sourced ingredients. Monte's also sells bagged buchi and rolotini dry pasta. The brand is carried in over 1,000 retail stores across the U.S., including Target, ShopRite, Fairway and Erewhon, and is planning to expand its presence in several other chains later this year. In the following interview, PJ talks about how his family's background motivated him to get into the food business, why he credits “human being relationships” for some early wins and the continued growth of Monte's, how he reduced ingredient costs by 25% without sacrificing quality and how he landed the brand at Target. Show notes: 0:32: Interview: PJ Monte, Founder & CEO, Monte's Fine Foods – PJ chronicles his family's history in restaurants and hotels before recalling a few notable stories about the early days of Monte's and uncommon methods of distribution. He also talks about how “human connections” between his team and retail buyers are the key to retail relationships and helps differentiate Monte's from other companies and how a chance meeting helped him secure a major deal for the brand. PJ also discusses his insistence on using premium ingredients and working with a co-manufacturer that could match his standards, how a deep dive into the company's supply chain helped it secure placement at Target and why he believes that quality doesn't need to be synonymous with being “the little guy.” Brands in this episode: Monte's Fine Foods, Rao's

Target and Walmart buyers say YES. Are government officials unfairly demonizing alcoholic beverages? What about sugar? Good questions, and we have answe… well, opinions. John mixes up a fresh batch of bull blood-infused beverages before Jacqui gives a ‘fiend a chance and Mike sweats from eating spicy cookies. 32:59: Interview: Julie Cielo, Founder, Ferm Fatale – Launched in 2015, Ferm Fatale was conceived as an “alternative social beverage” designed for health-conscious consumers and marketed as a mixer or a drink that could be served on its own. In the years that followed, the brand's positioning and packaging evolved to align with growing interest in sober living and rising demand for alcohol analogs. While Ferm Fatale built a significant online business and was carried by natural retailers in Southern California, including Erewhon, the brand faced operational and financial challenges that were difficult to overcome. Last year, Julie made the decision to shut down the company.
