Ian Edwards is back on SHENK with Sara Weinshenk, and things immediately go off the rails. Sara and Ian talk about dating apps, Raya, bad first dates, expensive LA hangouts, Erewhon, Soho House, and why an Amazon wish list might be a serious red flag in a man. They also investigate the concept of the "Amazon Jolene," discuss Dolly Parton and the lyrics to "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," and debate whether Jolene is the ultimate relationship threat. The conversation eventually moves to getting older, working out for bone density, downtown LA, jury duty, and Sara's unforgettable experience losing a kidney stone in an Uber. Ian Edwards brings his sharp observations and dry perspective back to SHENK for another episode of comedians talking about dating, LA life, aging, relationships, and whatever else comes up. Roxana Saidi is the founder and CEO of Táche. However, before she founded her pistachio-milk brand, Saidi graduated with a degree in marketing and got her first job out of college in public relations in Los Angeles. She then founded a social media agency that eventually grew into a creative and brand strategy agency called Rx Social. She later moved to New York and transitioned into consulting, but while on a trip with her family, she was struck by an idea for a brand offering nut milk made from pistachios, which were a staple in her Middle Eastern household as a child. Her research proved that pistachio milk could be more sustainable than almond milk and more nutritious than oat milk, so she started Táche by experimenting in her kitchen and launched the brand in 2020. Táche quickly found its way into high-end cafés and grocery stores, such as Erewhon and Sprouts, and the brand recently entered Whole Foods with its three-ingredient pistachio milk.

However, before founding her candy company, Hughes, who was born and raised in Hawaii, began her career in the arts, curating and coordinating exhibitions for a variety of organizations in the United States and UAE. She always had an interest in entrepreneurship, so in 2014, she started her first company—a Middle Eastern–inspired ice cream brand called Lezzetli. Around the same time, she came up with the idea for her second business, a Hawaii-grown herbal iced tea brand called Shaka Tea, which was acquired in 2022. After the acquisition, Hughes and her lifelong best friend Semira Nikou cofounded Better Sour. As daughters of Iranian immigrants who both grew up in Hawaii, Hughes and Nikou used their shared cultural backgrounds to inspire their flavors. This week, we are officially "Tint Boys" broadcasting straight from a transformed warehouse in Glendale, California, for the global Tinter Battles window tinting championships. We immerse ourselves into the intense, WWE-style subculture of competitive window tinting, complete with pre-competition online trash-talking, NASCAR-style matching team jerseys, and heavyweight champion belts. We hit the competition floor to interview Cody from Tex Window Tinting about his mid-competition broken squeegee, lending his toolbelt to a friend whose luggage was lost, and his high-tech "Tint Buster" backpack. We also catch up with Carlos, the CEO of Tinter Battles, who explains how he combined his musical performance background with his tinting career to give these hardworking professionals the rockstar platform they deserve. After watching the intense flat glass and Paint Protective Film (PPF) heats, we officially give ourselves tinting nicknames: "Squeege.E" and "Mikey No Bubbles," and definitively declare that window tinting is a sport that belongs on ESPN. Taking a break from the competition, we did some LA exploring, starting with a trip to Ace Hardware for the last pack of Pokémon cards before finally experiencing the famous grocery store, Erewhon. Despite expecting $20 grapes, we were surprised to find the produce prices pretty normal—though the $165 branded hoodies and $100 lotions definitely lived up to the hype. After consulting with the in-store sommelier for some wine, we proudly embraced our new status as "Erewhon girlies". Later, we retreated to the hotel to order some Panda Express and had a gaming session where Mike quickly grasped the mechanics of Fortnite, even while Erin got targeted and eliminated twice in a single round. To round out our West Coast trip, we engaged in some "business business" by visiting the studio of the GroupChat podcast. We recap the incredibly pristine bathrooms and share what it was like to sit in and watch the two brothers record their tech and finance show. While Erin felt a little out of her depth listening to the highly educated business banter, we loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at how another successful podcast operates.

In this episode, I'm sitting down with Blake Mitchell of Interact Brands to dissect the modern realities of CPG packaging design and strategic brand building. Rooted in old-school Rust Belt Ohio principles from our entrepreneurial fathers, Blake and I champion the timeless rule of constructing brands that solve real problems for real people. And while we've both eventually left Ohio, our upbringing continually provides a unique foundational perspective on bridging the gap between coastal elite trends and everyday consumers…balancing the needs of "Erewhon Moms" and "Toledo Dads" without falling into cultural echo chambers. Additionally, Blake and I explore how today's economic landscape has created a K-shaped world, forcing consumers to constantly trade up or down. Value is no longer a demographic. Instead, it's a rapid-fire habit requiring instant recognition on retail shelves. We also chart the evolution of product categories (like protein bars) from strict functionality to lifestyle-driven emotion, examining how to design for mature consumer markets. Finally, we dive into the Grüns blueprint to see how supplements can break out of sterile pharmacy aisles, and discuss the massive, untapped opportunity in making men's reproductive health approachable and engaging.

Professional wrestler Steph De Lander joins Steph for a two-Steph summit of broken bodies and public rage. SDL walks through the full saga of her neck: hearing the crunch-crunch-crunch on a northern lights suplex at the WWE training center, years of injections straight into the disc, the rupture on a jumping pull-up the day before a five-day Australian tour, crying through the flight, and the two surgeries that left her with a piece of her own hip bone and brand-new microplastic tech fused into her spine, which healed so fast her surgeon called his colleagues to look at the scans. From there they get into faking 100 logged driving hours to get a license, why announcing "a women's match" just cues up the creeps, Steph's midnight Facebook fight with a fan who refuses to watch her clips, the Austin TSA agent who stuck a hand in her face, waiting five and a half hours to confront the middle-seat texter who called her insane, and Steph inhaling a solid portion of her dead dog Susan's ashes while transferring the urn. What if you could be more intentional about your growth, build a strong footing in your community, and develop deep relationships that gave you leverage? Wynn Austin, Founder & CEO of Wynn's Kitchen, is taking that approach, i.e. slow & steady growth. Building relationships with regional retailers like Erewhon over the course of several years has given her credibility and the velocity she needs to be successful and profitable. You've probably seen Sara post about how she's obsessed with eating a specific brand of cookie dough. Today the founder and CEO of Doughy, Kelly Ramey, joins Oversubscribed to talk about her creation. The clean, six-ingredient cookie dough sold out at Erewhon within days of launch and you can now find Doughy in Whole Foods, Target, and Costco nationwide.Millions of pounds of cookie dough are sold each year but here's the incredible part: Kelly is still the only full-time employee. We get into how scrappy events and a manufacturing background prepared her for the chaos of building a food brand, why hundreds of failed recipes led her to cashews as the base ingredient, and the surprising origin story of the chocolate chip cookie itself. Kelly walks us through sourcing cashews from a farmer in Mozambique and maple syrup from Vermont, why she still hands out samples herself, and what it actually took to land the product in 2,300 stores nationwide. If you've ever wondered what it means to "bleed" for your company, this is it.// MORE FROM DOUGHY //You can purchase Doughy at eatdoughy.com or at Whole Food, Target, Erewhon, and Costco.Follow @eatdoughy on Instagram and @doughy on TikTok.// SPONSORS // Ritual: Save 25% on your first month at Ritual dot com slash FOSTER. So when she finally asked her community to pre-pay for a product that wouldn't ship for three months, she sold out 250 units in two weeks. Paul Hawken has spent more than fifty years asking the same question in different registers: what does it look like when human commerce rejoins the community of life rather than consuming it? He was a 19-year-old press coordinator for Martin Luther King Jr.'s march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. He cured his own lifelong asthma through food at 19, and went on to found Erewhon, one of the first natural food companies in America. He co-founded Smith & Hawken, wrote nine books translated into 30 languages across 50 countries, and co-founded Project Drawdown, which modeled the 100 most substantive solutions to reverse global warming. His most recent book, Carbon: The Book of Life, reframes carbon not as the villain of the climate story, but as the invisible thread connecting every living thing on Earth. In this rich and wide-ranging episode, Paul unpacks the ideas behind Carbon, exploring: The first breath: how a ten-day rice and tea fast at 19 cured an asthma that three doctors and a lifetime of medication never could, and what that taught him about the difference between fixing a symptom and restoring a relationship Why he now says Project Drawdown failed by his own measure, what's wrong with "Net Zero" as a target, and the difference between stabilizing the overflow and draining the tub Carbon as "the currency of abundance, the central bank of evolutionary growth, and the most socially adept entrepreneur in the pantheon of life," and what it means that this is not the language of a pollutant The naming problem: how the Enlightenment turned forests into cellulose, soil into dirt, and animals into objects, and why our climate response keeps failing because it uses the same framework that created the crisis What it means that humans are 0.01% of living biomass, and what the other 99.99% knows about running stable carbon cycles for hundreds of millions of years without summits, frameworks, or pledges The economics of a whale, valued at over two million dollars alive versus forty thousand dead, and whether pricing nature protects it or just folds it into the logic that nearly destroyed it The hidden world beneath our feet: mycorrhizal networks connecting 90% of land plants, 2,500 gigatons of carbon stored in soil, and why losing just 8% of it would dwarf current fossil fuel emissions Why cooperation, not competition, is the actual operating principle of the living world, and what that says about the economic system we've built on top of it Awe versus optimism: why Paul says he isn't optimistic, but is in awe of the people making a true difference, and what that distinction means in practice This is a deeply personal and quietly radical conversation about commerce, the body, and what it might mean to stop fighting carbon and start rejoining the community of life that has been regulating it all along. Val Emanuel and Rebecca Caputo, co-founders of Rif Care, share the story behind their brand, the first period care company to make products from hemp fiber and what it took to build that supply chain from scratch. Val and Rebecca talk about what conscious business really means in the feminine care space, where greenwashing is rampant and efficacy can't be sacrificed for sustainability's sake. They dig into the barriers they pushed through with scouring manufacturers, connecting dots across countries, and even how to deliver their first products themselves. We also zoom out on the broader women's health movement gaining momentum in CPG, and why they believe that when women are healthy, the planet is healthy. They wrap up by reflecting on the Naturally Network minority-owned fellowship and how the cohort they went through didn't just open doors, they became family.Takeaways:Rif Care makes period care products out of organic cotton and hemp fiber - pads, period underwear, tampons, and thong panty linersThey were the first company to make period products out of hemp fiber, pioneering a supply chain that didn't exist when they started. The hemp supply chain was built brick by brick, including connecting their manufacturer in one country with a hemp supplier in another just to get their first prototypes made.Hemp proved to be an ideal material — abundant, fast-growing, and sourced from upcycled fiber, making their supply chain both resilient and sustainable.Conscious business for Rif Care means efficacy first — a period product has to actually work and be made with the best materials possible. The period care industry has a significant greenwashing problem, and Rif Care's commitment to transparency is a direct response to that.Val and Rebecca see women's health as one of the most exciting and underserved frontiers in CPG — from PMS to menopause — and actively partner with and amplify other brands in the space.Women still receive only 3% of venture funding, yet Val and Rebecca see enormous opportunity for investors, partners, and brand ambassadors in the women's health space.Through the Naturally Network minority-owned fellowship, Rif Care learned how to build sales decks, talk to retailers, and develop distribution channels that helped them reach and maintain the number one spot at Erewhon.Sound Bites:"We're going to walk the walk. We're going to talk the talk.""There were people trying to make hemp feminine care for 10 years and we got a sample in like two weeks. It was completely a paper wall.""I don't drive a truck, you know? We had to learn how to drive a U-Haul to pick up our products and deliver them to distributors.""There's so many more opportunities for companies to fill that gap in women's health.""If women are healthy, the planet is healthy.""The people that we did the Naturally Network Fellowship with are still our best friends. Long before SIMPLi hit shelves at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Erewhon, and Wegmans, Sarela and Matt were traveling globally working directly with farmers to source regenerative organic ingredients and rebuild transparency at the root level of food production. What started as a sourcing mission eventually became SIMPLi — a pantry brand focused on traceability, regenerative agriculture, and proving that better food systems can scale without cutting corners. In this episode, Sarela and Matt break down how they built relationships with farming communities around the world, why most consumers have no idea where their pantry staples actually come from, and what it takes to create a mission-driven food brand in a category dominated by massive incumbents. Terramor is a luxury glamping resort with 64 upscale tent accommodations tucked into the woods near Acadia National Park. The food was incredible, the amenities were dialed in, and their guy, Omar,  took us through this private saltwater immersion experience in nature that I did not see coming — cold, but completely shifted my body and mind - followed by a robe and hot tea right on the ocean. It's one of those places where you're fully immersed in nature, but you're not sacrificing comfort. You just... decompress. If that sounds like something you need right now, go check them out, they're open May-October and whether with the family, special event, couples retreat… you have to take my word on this experience— TerramorOutdoorResort.com.

Comedians, writers, and co-hosts of the legendary podcast Guys We F****d, Krystyna Hutchinson and Corinne Fisher join Jameela this week for an episode that gets intimate, unhinged, and deeply relatable in equal measure.Corinne shares what happened when she tried to set the mood on a COVID-era Zoom date with Post-it note talking points, deli container margaritas, and a candle that set her hair on fire. Krystyna's Big Wrong Turn takes us inside Hurricane Sandy, a flooding apartment, a boyfriend who promised to throw out his ex-porn-star's Fleshlight collection, and the moment she discovered he had not. Jameela, meanwhile, reveals that her inner self on psychedelics turned out to be a very boring white lady who shops at Erewhon, and recounts the full catastrophic chain of events leading up to her Good Place audition, including curling her hair with her roommate's dildo and spending ten minutes alone in a casting director's bathroom using her teeth as a wrench. This week's Misery Loves Company comes from listener Josie, who declared her love at a prom after party, spent ten minutes arguing with the guy that he did love her actually, and ran into him the next morning looking like Beetlejuice. You can find Krystyna and Corinne's podcast Guys We F**ked wherever you get your podcasts.
