What really happened behind Amazon's $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods? In this episode on the Habits and Hustle podcast, John Mackey, founder and former CEO of Whole Foods, reveals why he walked away from the company he built over 44 years. We dive into how Whole Foods went from a single vegetarian store to a 540-store empire that revolutionized American eating habits. We also discuss why only 0.5% of Americans are vegan despite the plant-based movement, why protein obsession is misguided, and how Erewhon is disrupting the company he created. John Mackey founded Whole Foods Market in 1980 and served as CEO until 2022, growing it from a single store in Austin to a Fortune 250 company. He's the author of "Conscious Capitalism" and "The Whole Story," and now leads Love.Life, a revolutionary wellness center combining health, fitness, and medical care under one roof. What We Discuss:  03:27 - Why Erewhon has become "the new Whole Foods" and John's strategy to compete 07:46 - How John built Whole Foods with zero business education 14:50 - From pickles on hamburgers to vegetarian: John's food awakening at age 22 21:21 - The 100-year flood that almost destroyed Whole Foods after 9 months 26:50 - The hostile takeover attempt 29:17 - Meeting Jeff Bezos: The six-week whirlwind romance with Amazon 51:56 - Why John only took $1 salary for his last 16 years (and never got paid) 59:26 - Conscious Capitalism: The four pillars of building a purpose-driven business 01:09:00 - Love.Life: The one-stop wellness center that's "Whole Foods for health" 01:21:14 - Why only 0.5% of Americans are vegan and vegan restaurants are failing 01:24:42 - The protein myth: Why Americans eat too much protein and not enough fiber …and more! We're continuing to blaze a trail through the many, many movies opening on October 10 here at Breakfast All Day.  Earlier this week, we reviewed TRON: ARES, A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. Today, we discussed: ROOFMAN: Channing Tatum is ridiculously charming as a robber who escapes from prison and hides inside a Toys "R" Us store for six months. This actually happened. We enjoyed Tatum's performance, and the cast is strong, but the tone is off from indie director Derek Cianfrance. In theaters. URCHIN: Harris Dickinson makes an auspicious filmmaking debut with this gritty and intimate tale of addiction. Dickinson writes, directs and has a small supporting role, but Frank Dillane is the star as a young man trying to get clean but getting in his own way. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This was a lengthy one since we took last week off and there's so much to discuss. Among this week's topics were "Marty Supreme," the Riyadh Comedy Festival, the Melania Trump documentary, Rush reuniting with a new drummer, and the Smashing Pumpkins smoothie at Erewhon. We're hoping to go live again next Friday, so stay tuned for details. Thanks for being with us during this busy time! And we dig into the environmental cost of ribeye-heavy eating, why beef is one of the most resource-intensive foods on the planet, and how climate denial often gets wrapped into carnivore culture. So should you go full T-Rex? Probably not. But understanding the hype—and the risks—shows why restrictive food fads keep spreading, and why carbs are still essential for endurance athletes and long-term health.Support the ShowEternal – To check out Foundations, use the promo code YDS for 10% a one year membership.Tailwind Nutrition offers science–backed endurance fuel that actually works. Kristin Charbo is the Co-Founder and CEO of Glonuts, the better-for-you donut brand redefining indulgence with clean ingredients and low sugar. But her journey didn't start in food or even in business. Kristin spent over 15 years in luxury hospitality, opening hotels for brands like Mandarin Oriental and PUBLIC in New York. It wasn't until a PCOS diagnosis in her early 20s that she was forced to rethink her relationship with food, wellness, and ultimately, her career. That health wake-up call eventually sparked the idea for a nostalgic, blood-sugar-friendly treat she wished existed. What started as a “healthy donut thing” from a coffee cart quickly took on a life of its own, leading Kristin and her partner Grover to deliver over 100,000 donuts from their one-bedroom apartment and even use their wedding money to rebrand the business. Today, Glonuts is one of the most exciting brands in wellness snacking, stocked everywhere from Erewhon to H-E-B markets and other retailers all across the US.In this episode, Kristin gets real about what it actually takes to build something from nothing—when you don't have a blueprint, just a product people love and the grit to figure it out. She opens up about the mental rollercoaster of entrepreneurship, the scrappy early days of hand-delivering donuts, and the power of iterating on feedback. We talk about the challenges of fundraising as a female founder, how she built a network of powerhouse women who now double as investors and advisors, and why personal growth is just as critical as business growth. Whether you're dreaming of starting your own thing or in the thick of figuring it out as you go, Kristin's story is your reminder that success isn't always linear but it always starts with taking the first messy step.In this episode, we'll talk to Kristin about:* Glonuts began as an unexpected leap into entrepreneurship. Today, I'm talking with Logan Wright, Co-founder of Greco Gum, a brand redefining what gum can be. Logan shares the real story behind launching a functional gum designed to energize, support focus, and fit seamlessly into active lifestyles.  From early product formulations in a blender to landing on shelves in Erewhon, this is a founder journey that proves how much grit, clarity, and consumer empathy it takes to disrupt even the most overlooked CPG categories. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: * Why Logan saw an opening in the market for better-for-you, functional gum * How they formulated a clean, no-compromise gum with real performance benefits * Lessons from testing in real life—gyms, marathons, and startup grind * What it takes to win early DTC sales and build trust with retail buyers * Balancing brand identity, efficacy, and storytelling from the ground up Join me, Ramon Vela, in listening to the episode and get inspired by how Greco Gum is bringing a fresh perspective to wellness, one chew at a time. This one has it all—awkward secrets, viral drama, weird dealbreakers, and a trivia showdown that ends in a zero-zero tie. Buckle up. We kick off the show with a viral debate that has the internet split: a 32-year-old former prison officer turned adult content creator went viral after saying women should never date men who earn less than $150K a year. That set off a flurry of reactions—some agreeing, others accusing her of being out of touch. We get into the numbers, the logic (or lack of), and what it says about dating culture right now. Then, it’s time for Dirty Little Secret—and this one’s messy. A woman confesses she’s six months pregnant with her best friend’s brother’s baby… while engaged to someone else. And there’s a paternity twist that none of us saw coming. Next up: a First Date Follow Up with Dominic, who planned a Marvel-themed sensory experience for his date, including a blindfold and the Avengers theme. Sounds charming—until we learn he ended the night with a lullaby. Yes, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Let’s just say that didn’t land. Later in You vs. Victoria, Shirley and her daughter squad take on Victoria in a trivia battle, and somehow nobody scores a single point. It’s a chaotic draw, but they still walk away with Lil Wayne tickets. Also: Jubal calls a frustrated cable customer and transfers him through the absurd "Last Name" and "Zip Code" departments in a Jubal Phone Prank that nearly ends in a broken phone. Then, in Nina’s What’s Trending, we learn that Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) almost missed her flight after TSA flagged her for bringing suspicious sunflower seeds from Erewhon. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s original albums are suddenly spiking in sales—after she re-released all of them. Swifties, explain. In To Catch a Cheater, Mason suspects his girlfriend Talia of cheating after she calls him “Jason” in bed. Turns out—she was thinking of another man… Jason Bateman. From Ozark. Seriously. Finally, we go off the rails with a viral thread about absurd dating dealbreakers. No seafood? No go. TikToks at the gym? Red flag. And don’t get us started on jean preferences or baby toes. And in today’s second edition of Nina’s What’s Trending, Tinder rolls out height filters. Blake Lively walks back emotional distress claims in court. And in China, you can now rent a fake job for $5—vanilla folders and all. Your all-access pass to the most hilarious, outrageous, and unpredictable moments from The Jubal Show! Imagine this: you're standing inside a trendy L.A. grocery store—maybe it's Erewhon. You've got a cooler full of canned soda that claims to be good for your gut. You're not a celebrity and you're not even the founder of the company. You're just a guy with a vision, a few samples, and the audacity to talk your way into a product launch. That was Steven Vigilante back in 2018. Today, Olipop—the better-for-you soda brand that he helped bring to life—is in more than 30,000 stores across the country. They've partnered with Barbie, NASCAR, the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty, and somehow even made it into a Luke Combs music video. But it didn't start there. Steven cut his teeth in venture capital, betting early on health forward brands. When he saw the potential in a fiber-packed functional soda, he jumped in—first as an advisor, and then as the architect behind some of the boldest growth and partnership strategies in beverage today. So how do you build a soda brand that dares to take on the likes of Coke and Pepsi? One that trades sugar for science and still wins hearts and taste buds across America? In addition to all of that, they're also major partners for CITIUS MAG.This is the latest episode of The Build with Steven Vigilante, Director of Media and Partnerships at Olipop, on staying scrappy, scaling smart, and crafting a new kind of soda, one can at a time.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Steven Vigilante | @stevenvigilante on XSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSPILLAR PERFORMANCE: We all know that sleep is where the magic happens.
