Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell fell into a deep and distorted love affair. This was a dangerous and horrible event that led to the demise of Lori's husband Charles Vallow, Chad's wife Tammy Douglas Daybell, and Lori's children Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow. As we continue to move forward in the timeline of the missing children, we have learned so much about the evil belief system that has convinced Lori Vallow Daybell that her children were evil and needed to be murdered. Chad Daybell came up with a rating system and he sure did convince Lori that she was his Goddess. We explore the timeline leading up to Chad's "book" Loin Fire. Chad was still married to Tammy when he shared "Loin Fire" with Lori. But, Alex Cox had murdered Lori's husband Charles Vallow 2 days before he shared this with Lori. It might seem fiction based on the characters of James and Elana, but .... if you know the timeline, the people involved, and the evil beliefs they are following you will realize this is actually the true story of Lori (Elana) and Chad (James.) Thanks for listening. This episode has some adult content that may be inappropriate for children. Thanks for listening. On the night of August 4th, 1964, the crews of two American destroyers reported a gunfight at sea off the coast of North Vietnam. The report, two days after an initial exchange of fire between an American ship and North Vietnamese patrol boats, set the United States on a tragic course from which it could not divert: a commitment to a conventional war in Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin incident is among the most consequential events in post-World War II American history. However, it remains mired in controversy, hung up in confusing sonar hits and blurred memories. On Episode 49 of the 18th Airborne Corps podcast, host Joe Buccino tells the full, final story of the Gulf of Tonkin, of what really happened that night. He also describes how the events of August 4th, 1964 led so quickly to a war resolution. We spent 19 months researching this podcast; it is the final word on the Gulf of Tonkin incident. This episode features three of the Nation's top historians: Erik Villard, Edwin Moise, and John Prados, as well as Chad James, a US Navy Radarman 3rd Class at sea that night. Dr. Erik Villard is the Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Fort McNair, DC. He's also an Army historian of the Vietnam War and one of the world's leading experts on the 1968 Tet Offensive. Dr. Edwin E. Moise is a professor of history at Clemson University. Like Dr. Villard, he specializes in the Vietnam War. He is the author of the definitive account of the Tonkin Gulf Crisis: “Tonkin Gulf and the Escalation of the Vietnam War,” originally published in 1996, with a revised edition in 2019. Dr. John Prados heads the National Archive's Intelligence Documentation Project and its Vietnam Project. He is among our Nation's highest profile historians of the Vietnam War and American intelligence. Dr. Prados has authored many books on the CIA, national security, and the Vietnam War, most notably “Vietnam: The History of an Unwinnable War,” published in 2009. At an hour and a half, this is a longer episode, but it's worth the time. It's a fascinating story, one that is critical to our understanding of the Vietnam War. But this is not simply an effort in uncovering history: the Gulf of Tonkin has so much wisdom to offer us today. We reveal that wisdom in the final section in which we describe the lessons from August 1964 and how they apply to the current national security structure. This is a story of strategic miscalculation, of political pressure leading to catastrophic military decisions, of misunderstood intentions. It's also, at heart, the story of the fog of war and its cost. We timed this release for the 57th anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin incident. It's never been more relevant. The 18th Airborne Corps podcast is the official podcast of the US Army's XVIII Airborne Corps. Recorded on Fort Bragg, North Carolina with a new episode released every Tuesday, the podcast tells one complete story about an important national security subject every week.
Scaly, fire-breathing dragons don’t roam the earth anymore. (Wait, did they ever? I, for one, like to think that maybe, just maybe, they did.) But dragons tromp around in our lives nevertheless. These dragons are harder to see but arguably just as deadly. In this episode, Scott Larson shares how he slayed a dragon he discovered lurking in his own life, stealthily and with life-suppressing intent. The whole tale looks commonplace enough from the outside, but Scott knows what it really took to deal the death blow to his personal dragon. Few things instruct and inspire us as well as another person’s Story. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then one person’s Story might be worth a million. So I was thrilled when Scott agreed to share an excerpt from his Story for our benefit. From Scott’s story, we learn how to slay our own dragons. How This Episode Came to Be Scott and I recently concluded a six-month coaching partnership. As our partnership progressed, it began to dawn on me that Scott’s Story exemplifies literally all of the concepts that I’ve shared in the short-form topical episodes of this podcast: especially becoming the boss of your fear, harnessing discomfort to get where you want to go, daring to dream again, moving from the cabin to the cockpit, hearing and heeding your Inner Voice, the contentment conundrum, and breaking the stuckness stalemate. And it also dawned on me that in addition to hearing me talk about those concepts and how they’ve worked in my life, it might be good to hear how they’ve played out in someone else’s life--and in Scott’s case, over a really short period of time, with transformational effect. Which is less of a testament to my effectiveness as a coach and more of a testament to the power of the concepts themselves when applied with the kind of honest self-examination and Courage that Scott has consistently employed. Meet Scott Larson Scott is a devoted husband and father, gifted marketing professional, and avid outdoorsman. He, his wife, and their two kids live here in Steamboat Springs--we’re neighbors, in fact--and it’s a pleasure to present a chapter from Scott’s Story to help you “see” even more clearly what I’ve been attempting to say all along. A Dream Realized...A Dream Jeopardized Scott and his family arrived in Steamboat in February 2020--chasing a dream of life in a small mountain town with the great outdoors at their doorstep. A dream that put quality of life above climbing the corporate ladder in a city they had no interest of living in. Dream realized! Sweet! Then, just a few months after arriving, Scott lost his job. Oh, and a pandemic was beginning to wreak havoc around the globe. Crap. Suddenly, the Steamboat Dream was jeopardized. Now Scott began to consider that maybe he was incapable as a man, husband, father, and professional. This was their fourth move in 5 years for work, yet another in a pattern of jobs gained and jobs lost or left. Was there something more deeply wrong with him as a person? What a tough thing to begin wondering about yourself. What a heavy accusation to level at yourself! Insight + Action = Transformation It was about that time that Scott and I began our coaching partnership to help him navigate this new and unwelcome transition. In the full episode, Scott recounts how new insights led to new actions that ultimately led to transformation. Two assessments, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Highlands Ability Battery (HAB) “put a vocabulary to the things that I already knew, but it helped to solidify and synthesize it for me so it was something I could speak to and relate to more readily. It brought it more to the forefront of my thinking as well.” A values exercise also helped him evaluate how well his actual life aligned with his most deeply-held values. And reconsideration of how he defines success led to a major overhaul of his definition of success. Tune into the full episode to hear more. Creating an Owner’s Manual As the coaching partnership progressed, Scott began assembling a personal owner’s manual. A guide to the kind of human he is, his ideal operating conditions, and his adverse operating conditions. Three basic categories of content were populated: nature, nurture, and now. “Nature” were Scott’s default settings, and MBTI and HAB were the two primary tools used to populate that category. “Nurture” were those things Scott acquired along the way in life, intentionally or otherwise--like after-market modifications. The most important of those were acquired beliefs, like the definition of success that he decided to upgrade upon realizing that it wasn’t actually his definition of success. And finally the “Now” category: values, interests, opportunities, obligations, etc. that became key determinants in how he applies Nature and Nurture. Inner Voice + Courage = Action Then, new and improved owner’s manual in hand, Scott was faced with a moment of truth: a job offer...in a situation similar to his past gigs. But the owner’s manual wasn’t enough on its own. On the one hand, it still felt like maybe the only responsible thing to do was take the job. But he paused to tune into his inner voice with new focus and resolve to heed what he heard. And the message he heard was clear. But Courage was needed to act on what he heard, so Scott chose Courage in that moment, bet on himself, and didn’t take the job. As Scott discovered, Courage isn’t something that you have to go out and find. It’s something you choose. It’s simple on one level. But it definitely isn’t easy. And Courage is the secret sauce in Scott’s whole story. “I bet on myself, and I didn’t take the job.” This is the pivotal moment in this whole story--the moment of crisis, the moment of resolute action in a new direction. If this was a fairy tale, this would be the moment when the hero slays the dragon. It’s that big a deal. It’s THE moment when Scott moved from drafting an outline for a new chapter in his story and actually began to write it. This is THE moment when Scott went from considering taking a new path and actually began to walk down that new path. This is THE moment when Scott placed one of the best bets that any of us can ever make by betting on himself. It’s the moment when Scott quit just cutting bait and actually started fishing. What’s maybe even more significant about this moment, though, is that it was not just one big step down a new path for Scott, it was an evolutionary leap in life overall. Scott created within himself an exponentially greater capacity for change and growth and learning in this moment. Many moments and much toil and trepidation led up to this moment. Then Scott converted all of many difficult moments into powerful, positive forward momentum. This is the way, folks--not just for Scott, but for all of us. Insight + Action = Transformation, and Courage is the activating agent. What Now? Having slayed a personal dragon and begun to travel down a new path, Scott’s next challenge was to figure out what to do professionally if he wasn’t going to return to the path he’d been on before. The answers weren’t automatic, but Scott was now free to pursue them with new clarity about the kind of human he is, his ideal operating conditions, his adverse operating conditions, his true definition of success, and his most deeply-held values. Eventually, Scott decided to hang his shingle as an independent marketing consultant. And it wasn’t long after that that he secured his first client--a client that he still partners with today. Other, Less-Obvious But Incredibly Powerful Forces at Work Scott and I paused to acknowledge several other things that helped Scott successfully slay a personal dragon to access the path marked “Scott Larson’s Way.” Scott achieved a new degree of self-permission--that privilege of adulthood that many of us have a hard time grasping. When he began to give himself more permission to look at things his own way and do what he wanted to do, he started becoming even more of the man he’s made to be and living the life that he’s uniquely made to live more fully. I think more of us doing that is a very good thing--not only for our own personal enjoyment, fulfillment, and productivity, but also because a more fulfilled Scott, for example, leads to a happier husband, an even more engaged and thoughtful Dad, a more active member of the community Scott also risked a new level of self-trust--a new willingness to tune into his inner voice, hear and heed what it whispered to him about the truth of his existence, and bet on himself. And Scott assumed even more self-responsibility--putting himself more firmly in the driver’s seat of his life than ever before and accepting all of the consequences. Tune in for the Full Effect These shownotes can’t do justice to the whole conversation and the value of Scott’s story to all of us. I hope you’ll tune in to the full episode for the full effect! What part of Scott’s story inspired you the most or provoked a bit of envy? Maybe Scott’s story has stirred within you fresh resolve to take action to improve your situation in some way or pursue a dream that you’ve pushed aside for too long. Courage is the secret sauce. Courage is the catalyst that moves you from Insight to Action so you can achieve Transformation. And Courage isn’t “out there” waiting for you to find it. This episode is a first for this podcast--a “part two” continuation of a previous episode. It features a fellow coach and my good friend, Chad James, and together we unpack the 5 ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit that I shared in Ep. 027, Breaking the Stuckness Stalemate: A Path to Transformation. When I released that episode, I was vaguely aware that it felt unfinished somehow, but I couldn’t put my finger on why. Then I got unsolicited feedback from my wife and Chad that although they really liked the episode, it felt unfinished to them, too. And Chad mentioned that the five basic ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit was the part he wanted to hear more about. That connected the dots for me on what felt unfinished and what needed to be done about it. And since I’ve been wanting to have Chad on the podcast for a while anyway, I decided to strike while the iron was hot, as it were, and kill two birds with one stone by asking Chad to join me to help land this plane that was left circling the airfield. If you haven’t already tuned in to Ep. 027, you can still listen to this one first because I summarize the big idea from that episode at the beginning of this one. But for full benefit, I do recommend listening to Ep. 027, too. It’s short and easy to digest at just 15 mins--and in it I pull back the curtain on one of my own recent episodes of stuckness on the way to making the point. Introducing Chad James Chad James is a veteran business coach with 20+ years of experience. His own experience in business and his intuitive gifting for discerning core issues, coupled with empathy, compassion, and a vast resource of tools and strategies for optimizing business and life, make Chad a highly-sought-after, highly-trusted, and valuable partner for “succeeding faster, living better, and creating the life you’ve always imagined.” He’s led an amazingly diverse and adventurous life, and he’s often picking up some new pursuit for the sake of stretching and challenging himself and embracing the “beginner’s mind” again. He has a huge heart. He brings all of who he is to his work as a coach. Chad’s also a good friend of mine and a mentor in life and business, too. In fact, he was catalytic in my development of The Graveyard Group masterminds--of which he is a founding member--and has helped me climb numerous professional learning curves more quickly than I would have on my own. The original concept out of which I developed this 2-part podcast series, “If you’re stuck, get moving,” was formulated in preparation for an event at which Chad invited me to speak. To say that he’s been influential in my life would be a huge understatement. Something New from Chad--and a Special Deal for You Chad has just launched a brand new project that I’m really excited about and I hope you’ll check out, called Mavericks--a membership-based group coaching experience that makes Chad’s wealth of wisdom, tools, and strategies available to many more than ever before, in the context of a group of others playing full-out in the game of life. I’m pumped to share that Chad’s offering Andrew Petty is Dying listeners 25% off of their first-month’s membership. Just visit carrynobrand.com, and enter the code “Andrew” at checkout. Membership is super reasonably priced at less than $100 a month, and it gives you exclusive access to Chad and his treasure trove of resources. First, a Refresher: Ep. 027 Summary If you haven’t yet tuned into part 1 of this 2-part series on breaking the stuckness stalemate, go here to tune in or read the shownotes, or read this brief summary of the main points, below: The Big Idea: If you’re stuck, get moving. Even more specifically, get moving with and through the stuckness. Other Important Stuff Supporting the Big Idea Stuck is never fun--in fact, it can actually be really painful--but stuckness is a normal and necessary part of life as a human on planet Earth. It alerts us to the fact that there’s a gap between where we are and where we want to be. And something unconscious and unknown is in our way. Stuckness is a chance to make the unconscious conscious--to generate fresh insight to which we can then apply action and achieve some sort of transformation. Because Insight + Action = Transformation. The stuckness is always there for a reason. With practice, we can learn to see the stuckness as an indicator that we’re on the brink of a new opportunity to grow and evolve. But moving through stuckness to the good stuff beyond is less like the caterpillar emerging from a caterpillar than it is like a snake shedding its skin. It takes effort and intention and time--and it’s uncomfortable. The accompanying psychological pain of stuckness is essential, though. Our desire for relief from it motivates us to do the work to get unstuck. The discomfort is necessary to produce the insights that lead to action that result in some kind of transformation. Stuckness is a guide appointed by our hearts and minds to show us the way to something even better. We have choices, of course, when stuckness shows up. Broadly speaking, we can retreat from it, stall out in the face of it, or advance through it. Neither retreating nor stalling out will produce a good result. Only advancing through it will. Here are five basic ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit: Become familiar with your own tell-tale signs of stuckness. In my experience, some of the typical signs include irritability, distractedness, restless energy, a lack of focus, and loss of a sense of humor. Acknowledge that you’re stuck, and invite the stuckness to teach you. This acceptance will create the openness of heart and mind that allows the unconscious to be made conscious. Don’t fight it or try to muscle your way past it. Resistance or avoidance or sheer force of will makes the stuckness an enemy rather than a useful mentor. Take 100% responsibility for your stuckness. It’s your problem--no one else’s. Request help from others--friends, experts, a therapist, whomever or whatever seems appropriate to the situation--but retain full ownership of the problem and the solution. Tap into the negative energy--frustration, anger, etc.--to fuel positive forward movement through the stuckness. Finally, get moving--with and through the stuckness. So, if you’re stuck, get moving. Even more specifically, get moving through the stuckness so it can teach us what it’s there for. The more skillful we become at leveraging life’s many encounters with stuckness, the more we will milk out of this life, the more we will bring into it for our own fulfillment and others’ benefit, and the fewer deathbed regrets we’ll have. Now, Part 2! Now, without further ado, let’s jump into the meat of this episode--part 2 of Breaking the Stuckness Stalemate: The 5 Ingredients in the Recipe for Using Stuckness to Our Benefit, with Chad James! Since this part 2 episode focuses on unpacking the 5 ingredients in much greater depth and detail, I’ll organize what follows under subheadings for each ingredient. I won’t come close to capturing all of the great stuff, so tune in to the full episode for more. Ingredient 1: Get Acquainted With It Become familiar with the tell-tale signs of stuckness. In my experience, some of the typical signs include irritability, distractedness, restless energy, a lack of focus, and loss of a sense of humor. Some key points from this part of the discussion: It’s important to recognize the primary emotion you’re experiencing. Sometimes, somatic (physical) indicators appear first in times of mental (psychological) stuckness--even before we’re aware of the specific emotion. So training ourselves to become more aware of our specific “psychosomatic” early warning signs is an important part of using stuckness to our benefit. For Chad, common psychosomatic indicators are sensations in the center of his chest and tightness in his neck. This helps us avoid the instinctive “fight or flight” response to discomfort and unpleasant emotions--and move with and through the stuckness instead. We brought Steven Pressfield’s concept of Resistance--a form of stuckness--into the conversation, from his fantastic book, The War of Art. (To get the essence of this Resistance idea (and a whole lot more) w/out first reading the whole book, tune into Tim Ferriss’ recent interview with Steven Pressfield.) Chad had this to say, “I think that one of the very important concepts in taking things to the next level is understanding--not just understanding but accepting and maybe even celebrating--that Resistance is part of that journey. So as we see that Resistance, that could be an exciting moment, it could be an awesome moment, it could be an area where we go, "Oh wait, something cool's about to happen!" When we change our relationship with Stuckness / Resistance, we can learn the lesson it’s there to teach us and achieve the transformation available on the other side. The hard way--through the stuckness, for example--is often the best way. And more... Ingredient 2: Acknowledge It Acknowledge that you’re stuck, and invite the stuckness to teach you. This acceptance will create the openness of heart and mind that allows the unconscious to be made conscious. Don’t fight it or try to muscle your way past it. Resistance or avoidance or sheer force of will makes the stuckness an enemy rather than a useful mentor. Some key points from this part of the discussion: “The faster we energetically acknowledge that something is wrong...the faster we can begin to take action toward fixing it. And often that action...just has to do with moving toward it.” -Chad If I fail to acknowledge it, I start living my life in avoidance of it. So it’s still calling the shots. It’s better to just acknowledge it, deal with it, and move on. Ingredient 3: Own It Take 100% responsibility for your stuckness. It’s your problem--no one else’s. Request help from others--friends, experts, a therapist, whomever or whatever seems appropriate to the situation--but retain full ownership of the problem and the solution. Some key points from this part of the discussion: Nobody’s coming to save you--as Chad’s Air Force Colonel dad reminded him as a kid. As adults, it’s our job to self-rescue. If we expect or demand that others will fix our stuckness, we’ll get into victim territory and create unnecessary collateral damage. So I hear...not that I have any recent personal experience with this… Take responsibility first. Then enroll others to help you. Your spouse / significant other is not your therapist. Ingredient 4: Harness It Tap into the negative energy--frustration, anger, etc.--to fuel positive forward movement through the stuckness. Some key points from this part of the discussion: “Be with” the discomfort of stuckness. If we’re constantly fighting it, we can’t act our way out of it. If we didn't have some of the pain associated with these moments of stuckness, we'd lack the motivation to grow. Cognitive dissonance pulls us forward. Slow down. If we're inclined to believe that we can't slow down for an episode of stuckness, then we’re going to revisit it again later. The stuckness will recur and build until you HAVE to pay attention to it--often at a much higher cost. If we slow down, be with it, and rely on the fact that we've been here before--then we tend to put ourselves in a better place for action. And a plethora (cue The Three Amigos clip…) of metaphors to help us “see” what we’re saying--from dirtbike racing to soccer and mountain biking and flying a plane. As in these things, so in life! Ingredient 5: Take Action Finally, get moving--with and through the stuckness. Some key points from this part of the discussion: If nothing else, simply be sure to take some action, to move in some way. If you’re stuck, get moving. Good action is never wishing the problem would go away. Good action starts from the point of stuckness and moves forward from there. Action with intention toward our stuckness always solves our problem better. It’s important to act on the insights we gain from slowing down to learn what the stuckness is there for. Take action on what you learn so the insight can produce transformation. Insight + Action = Transformation. There are things we simply can’t know without taking action. You can’t pre-solve stuckness. You can’t think your way out of stuckness. You have to act your way out of stuckness. That’s It In a Nutshell. Now It’s Your Turn. With Chad’s help and over two episodes, I’ve done what I can to help us understand stuckness, upgrade our relationship with it, and use it to our benefit. Now it’s your turn. What are one or two insights you’ve gained on this topic than you can put to work in your own life right now? Break the Stuckness Stalemate in Your Own Life I hope this episode has helped you evolve your relationship with stuckness--our challenging but normal and necessary companion in life. Connect with Chad James Chad James Website Chad James Group on Instagram Chad James Group on Facebook Resources & People Mentioned Textbook: Professional Practice for Interior Designers Microsoft Teams How Microsoft Teams eased the transition into a Virtual Workplace Nashville had a large influx of cases early on in the Coronavirus pandemic. This led Chad and his team to decide to shift to a virtual workplace. But how did they do it? How did they move their office home and make it a smooth transition? Chad notes that Microsoft Teams was the platform his team brought to the table. Chad was hesitant to use it—because he’s a loyal Apple guy—but they ended up loving it. Plus, it opened up a new realm of possibility for his clients. He’s able to share drawings, proposals, and screenshots while still being able to see their reactions over video. Chad admits that he’s an old dog when it comes to technology and he doesn’t like to learn new tricks but Microsoft Teams is user-friendly and easy to maneuver. Since his team has moved back to the office they’ve continued to use the platform for inner-office communication as well as client communication. What started as something that would ease the transition into a virtual workplace become a staple for their office. Weigh the move to a virtual workplace carefully Chad learned early on in his career that he needed separation of work and home life. Not only that, but he prefers to be in an office interacting with people and building on the relationships he’s formed. If you’re contemplating completely moving your team to a virtual workplace he notes that you have to decide what’s most important for your creativity and business mindset. For his business, that means moving back into the workplace, while embracing a few of the things that made the virtual workplace manageable for them, such as Microsoft Teams. But you have to consider what’s best for the functionality of your team. Chad notes that the Chad James Group is “About the relationship and the feeling and the experience more than just the day-to-day design.” Managing and operating a virtual workplace Operating and managing a virtual workplace can be an easy shift—depending on how much you trust your team. Chad points out that he has a director of operations that is the glue that holds everything together. He knows Chad’s schedule better than he does. As a creative, Chad can get a bit overwhelmed if he looks too far into the future. Having a Director of Operations helped ground him in the day-to-day and take everything a moment at a time. One of Chad’s biggest concerns, when they shifted to a virtual workplace, was the eventual transition back into the office. He didn’t want his team to develop poor habits while working from home. So from the very beginning, they had a morning Microsoft Teams call where he saw everyone dressed with hair and makeup done—showered and prepared as though they were going to the office. One of Darla’s favorite phrases is “How you do anything is how you do everything.” and this is an example of that. Getting up and getting ready for the day puts you in a mind-space where you’re ready to actually work and not be lackadaisical and comfortable. Create a place of transparency for your team When Chad’s Dad passed away a few years ago, he realized he needed to be very purposeful with the remaining years of his life. He chose to be purposeful about his intentions and how his team, company, and clients saw him. When his team transitioned into a virtual workplace he knew it was important to continue to foster an environment where everyone talked openly and honestly about how they were dealing with their emotions. He points out that as a business owner, there will always be things that you keep in your side pocket and deal out when it needs to be dealt. This time wasn’t just about business, but about each other. It’s so easy when you’re not working in an office to become detached and distant and to lose the human connection. Chad points out that you don’t want to hear that someone on your team experienced a hurt or loss and you didn’t know about it. He emphasizes how important it is that you remain connected and talk through emotions with your team. Brass Horse Heads Antler Chandelier CA. 1870'S SWEDISH GUSTAVIAN VITRINE Today on the Chaise Lounge, your host is the Antiques Diva Toma Clark Haines. Toma chats with her friend and fellow antiques dealer Margaret Schwartz of Modern Antiquarian. They discuss the behind-the-scenes life of an antique dealer, like how easy it is to get into on accident and the way dealers need to surf on economic waves to weather recession. Margaret Schwartz started her design career working for Martha Stewart and she took everything she learned there and turned it into her own firm where she eventually hired her first and still-only employee, Kelly Maguire. And Schwartz, thanks in part to Toma's influence, got inspired to turn the whole operation into Modern Antiquarian. Make sure to find Margaret Schwartz online at ModernAntiquarianShop.com and on Instagram @modernantiquarian. The same goes for Toma at AntiquesDiva.com and @theantiquesdiva. Chad James, founder and principal of the award-winning design firm Chad James Group based in Nashville, TN. With a rich portfolio, Chad James Group works to create custom residential and commercial construction, including bespoke boutique hotels, refined restaurants, and perfectly appointed homes. The internationally recognized firm has been published in The Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Traditional Home and Billboard Magazine, to name a few. Award-winning designer Chad James was honored as a 2017 Rising Star of Design by Traditional Home.Designing a beautiful home is not an easy task, especially if you want it to feel comfortable with your lifestyle. Chad James, an interior designer in Nashville, states that one of the biggest misconceptions in interior design is that design does not follow function. This means that many people believe that if you want a well-designed home, you better be prepared to tiptoe around the house rather than actually using the furniture. That is why when it comes to Chad James and his design team, their first thoughts are about the types of memories their clients will share with their families.During the show, Chad recalls his fondest memories in his childhood home and how they were a big part in shaping who he is today. The majority of his family lives in Muscle Shoals Alabama. This is where he and his older sister were raised by his mother and father. He shares with us that both of his parents were very creative and were great at making their house feel like a home. His father was a musician and would always be playing music inside the house, while his mother was more of a creative all around. One of his favorite memories was during his 7th birthday, when his mother created a carnival themed party. He said she took cardboard boxes and created carnival characters and games out of them. James truly appreciated everything his parents did for him and his sister.Chad also described his relationship with his sister as oil and water while they were growing up. His sister, who is 5 years older than him, is “the most intellectual person I know” he states. Achieving academic heights was easy for her, but being creative was a little bit difficult for her. On the other hand, he had to truly work hard to achieve B status in school, but creativity was like second nature. Although they differed in many areas, Chad’s parents were good at not comparing him and his sister to each other. He recalled his mother saying that “comparison is the thief of all joy” and to this day Chad continues to live by those words.Chad attributes his success and ability to create well designed homes and functional living space to his mentor, Landy Gardner, and his parents. While Gardner was able to show him the ins and outs of the industry, it was his parents who showed him what a true home really feels like. What do you do to make your house a home? Does your childhood home influence the home you have created for yourself now, like Chad’s has? High Point Market: Passion Sucks. It's All About the Money! Today in the Lounge, we have a live recording of Nick's panel "Passion Sucks. It's all about the Money!" at Universal Furniture's event room during High Point Market. Nick hosted this panel with superstars Kelli Ellis, Chad James, Steven Favreau, and Nina Magon. Also on the episode, Nick talks with Jill Erwin of Jill Erwin Interiors. Jill talks about her how she transitioned from fashion into interior design, how she runs her business and all about her killer marketing tactics. Passion Sucks. It's All About the Money! All of us in the interior design industry are passionate about interior design, but that doesn't mean all of us are successful. Passion can only take us so far, so what differentiates those that are successful, from those that are trying to become successful? Nick talks to industry-leading design firms from across the country, to learn how they've broken out of mediocre to build stand-out design firms. Learn not only how to get press coverage but also how to make REAL dollars. Panel Summary Kelli Ellis is an interior designer, licensing LLC, author, business coach and TV personality. While design is her passion, it's also her business. Nina Magon was an economics and finance major turned interior design. She was on American Dream Builders with Nate Berkus in 2013 as a semi-finalist. Nina just completed her project on 51fifteen Cuisine and Cocktails with Sax Fifth Avenue in Houston, Texas and does both residential and commercial design. Before Steven Favreau became an interior designer, he was a professional dancer and singer. Based out of Boston, Steven is opening up the Favreau's Factory, which is an 11,000 square foot think tank for himself, architects, high tech web people and photographers. It will launch January of 2018. Chad James is based out of Nashville, Tennessee but he has a plethora of clients all over the World including in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands. He originally studied Architecture at Auburn University and five years into his career he decided to start designing the interiors his buildings. His company does Architecture Consulting and 75% of their projects are residential, the rest are Commercial. Steven relays that one of the things you learn in becoming a successful designer is to always be looking for clients with large budgets. If you are able to do what you'd like without limitation, you will be better at your job and be able to show this off. For Steven, it's all about how you present yourself to clients. If he is put up against other designers for a job, he always makes the client feel comfortable that's he is the right choice because he is going to get it done right. Steven believes social media is where it's at but, networking, such as going High Point, is also important. Nina has been called the number one contemporary designer in Texas. To make her firm stand out, she has a no-nonsense policy. This policy means that they don't fool around with clients or their money and they deliver the best customer service. She only hires people who believe in her brand and who are modern and forward thinking. Four staff members out of her 12-person firm were educated in Columbia. They are able to bring new and innovative ideas to her company which help set her apart. Nina receives new clients by making all her previous clients very happy. Word of mouth goes a long way. For every project, Nina shoots to make 35%. Her firm charges $250 an hour with $20,000 minimum. Nina is involved in every aspect of the project and everyone she works with is an extension of herself. Nina prefers working on full houses and high profile projects which help get her name out there. The first time Kelli started to feel successful in her career was when she started getting knocked off. She doesn't see this as a negative because she broadcasts so much of what she does and has a “look at me” kind of company,

High Point Fall 2017 Market Preview Today in The Lounge, we are talking all about High Point! Janine Wagers is the Creative Director and Showroom Designer of the Universal Furniture Showroom in High Point, North Carolina. She joins us to discuss the best ways to prepare for Market. Lisa Kahn of Lisa Kahn Designs is the keynote speaker for Gail Doby's Interior Design Summit and gives us an inside look on what she will be speaking about. As always, connect with us on our website, iTunes, Stitcher, Facebook and Instagram @thechaiselounge. Nick has been on a mission to uncover how the 3D Rendering software at Porcelanosa works. He measured his bathroom and sent in pictures to Porcelanosa to design 2 different remodel prototypes, and the process only has a two day turn around! On the next episode, we will share an interview with Carla Espino to learn more about how this product works. Additionally, we will include the BIG REVEAL of Nick's bathroom BEFORE and AFTER. Utilize this free service by going to Porcelanosa's website or by visiting your local showroom. During High Point, Nick will be moderating a panel, Passion Sucks. It's All About the Money!, at the Universal showroom, Saturday the 14th at 11:00 am. All of the designers Nick has spoken to are passionate about interior design, but that's not what makes it or breaks it for them. So Nick will be asking Nina Magon of Contour Interior Design, Steven Favreau of Favreau Design, Kellie Ellis of Kelli Ellis Interior Design and Chad James of the Chad James Group: What does it really take to become successful? To RSVP and for a FULL list of The Chaise Lounge High Point Market events, visit our events page. Meet Janine Janine Wagers joins Nick from High Point, North Carolina, furniture capital of the world. Her work as Create Directive and Showroom Designer concentrates on displaying Universal Furniture's products within the showroom in new and interesting ways. Market? WHAT DO I DO? Here's Janine's advice: As a designer, you have to figure out what you would like to accomplish at Market. Ask yourself, What are you here to see? What vendors would you like to visit? Are you buying furniture? Are you buying accessories? Are you here to establish new relationships with vendors? Or are you meeting with your existing vendors? Maybe you've never been to Market and are just here to grasp, what is High Point? (It's like regional markets....but on steroids). Think about what price points you want to look at and what styles. Anyone and everyone furniture connected is going to show at High Point SO you need to plan and narrow it down to what you want to focus on. There is no way you can make it to every showroom in 5 days, that's 11.5 million square feet of showrooms! High Point Market's website has a full list of exhibitors so Janine says that you definitely want to prepare beforehand, look them up, and see which products fit into your style and price categories. You also want to target specific areas at Market, if one of your vendors is in an area, it's likely similar vendors will be there too. Get your geography down! Market is very spread out. Nick Janine advise to make a list of the vendors you want to see, so you can plan each day accordingly by location. It's also important to know that there are accessory vendors that are preset (you go in and buy it like it is), but there are also places you can buy samples or one-of-a-kind pieces! You might want to take a day to just visit accessory companies EARLY ON and pick up samples or one-of-a-kind pieces, as those go quickly. It's always fun to have a treasure to bring back to a customer. You get to tell them that you located it in High Point and it's the only one of its kind. You'll have a good story to help you sell a piece or to let someone know you picked it out special for them. ICFF with Chad James On this episode of The Lounge, Nick meets with Chad James at ICFF NYC to talk about long time client, friend and country singer-songwriter Luke Bryan; PR; and Chad's progress since their last interview about a year ago. It's Chad's first time at ICFF and he is very excited about the unique vendors and getting small glimpses into each one's best work. Later, Nick talks to Shell Broadnax of RESA who will be speaking at Las Vegas Market about whether or not you might want to become a home stager. Special thanks to Benjamin Moore for making this week's show possible. Walls By Design exclusively uses Benjamin Moore paints which can be bought online at Guiry's. This week in the office we did a paint test between Benjamin Moore and Sherman Williams' four lowest end products, as they're the most commonly bought paints. Hang tight for a link to the video on the Walls By Design Facebook. Catching up with Chad Currently, Chad is on a 12-week travel schedule so he hasn't spent much time at his home in Nashville, Tennessee. When he does make it to his lakehouse though, he enjoys wake surfing from his boat. Chad is always very private about who he works with but once a client's project is published, he's able to talk about it. Two years ago he designed Luke Bryan's Florida beach home and recently, his work was picked up and put on the cover of Traditional Home, so Nick dug in to learn all about it. Check out the article here. His photographs (featured below) were done by architectural photographer Alyssa Rossenheck who will be on the show this month! Chad gives us some insight into the pros and cons of PR in the interior design industry and how he is able (or unable) to get his work out there. All of his employees sign a confidentiality agreement. Occasionally though, he get's to take photos of a project and send it out to multiple avenues in order to see who will 'bite,' just like with Traditional Home and Luke Bryan. Last time Nick and Chad chatted, at Highpoint, he told us that he hired a PR company to encourage his business and his work. Before that, Chad just kept his head down, took pictures, put them in his portfolio, and that was it. He never was a self-promotor so his PR took away the burden and discomfort of having to promote himself. Now, he's has participated in speaking engagements and has traveled to Italy, to Paris, and all over the U.S. His PR handles all online and print media, gained him name recognition, and created a BRAND- the only way to make your business grow. Lastly, Chad talks about his new house, which he closed on his birthday, but is only just now starting to design the space. He has decided to publish his home when 's finished because this house is very different than anything he's ever done before - it's contemporary! He describes it as a 'modern box' and so, he wants to let his pendulum swing in the other direction and show off this new side. Chad predicts that after a 7-year span of bright,
