What happens on the days I can't write poems, when the words don't rhyme and my rhythm is out of time? I'll still put pen to paper and let my brain melt. Maybe one day, I'll look back and see something heartfelt? I don't know know if heaven is up there or down there, I truly believe it's where my feet are, right here. I change my mind day to day, writing poems is like childs play. Scrambling, jumbling, switching, swapping, noting, observing. That's whats happens to my words when I spend too much time running. On the days I can't write poems, this is what you get. A few words before my brain resets. Questions: What are you resisting? How can you bring awareness to the different forms of resistance? Journal prompt: Where can I focus my attention this week which will improve my life/myself? Resistance. Like gravity, it's such a common part of the human experience that few of us stop to acknowledge it, but it's a force that exists in all of our lives. It's in the fear that pops up when we go to move forward in life. It's in the inner critic, the imposter syndrome and the voice telling us we can't. It's in the writer's block, the snooze button, the procrastination and the distraction. It's the force that pushes against our creativity and our efforts – especially the big dreams that are part of our soul's mission – and none of us is immune to it (nope, not even the greats in their fields). The people who accomplish great things aren't people who don't experience resistance; they're the ones who can recognize it and choose to act anyway. I was so honored to have one of my favorite authors, Steven Pressfield, on the show to talk about the dynamics of resistance in our lives. As a writer, Steven understands this force intimately, and some of his most famous work, like “The War of Art,” has focused on the topic of resistance: what it is, where it comes from and how we can stare it in the face and move forward anyway. In this episode, he shares his own 27-year journey of working with his ego to publish his first book, what he's learned along the way and how he continues to dance with resistance to pursue his soul's calling. Listen to discover: What resistance is and where resistance comes from How to take action even with resistance (and why we shouldn't expect resistance to just "go away") The many different forms resistance can take How to work with resistant voices like the inner critic The mindset of an amateur vs. a pro (and how you can start thinking like a pro from the start) How to handle rejection and failure and get back up again The danger in resistance is failing to recognize it. It's so easy to listen to that negative inner voice and truly believe that something is too hard and we shouldn't do it. By naming resistance and even listening to what it's trying to tell us, we can begin to separate our calling from our egoic fears and make the conscious choice to act anyway. When we do, we might realize it's not nearly as hard as we thought it would be. "When I would hear those voices trying to distract me or those voices telling me I'm unworthy, I would say to myself, 'Well, that's not me talking. Those aren't my thoughts. That's resistance.'" - Steven Pressfield "I'm convinced that resistance is a force of nature." - Steven Pressfield "No matter what your passion is, resistance is going to pop up." - Michelle Chalfant "When you feel massive resistance to something, you know that's the thing you gotta do." - Steven Pressfield "The more resistance you have, the more in line with your soul's mission that you are." - Michelle Chalfant "The bigger the dream, the bigger the resistance." - Steven Pressfield "We will think, 'Well, let me wait until the fear goes away and then I'll do it.' But the reality is that the fear never goes away." - Steven Pressfield "Once you take action, resistance will recede." - Steven Pressfield "Resistance has no strength of its own." - Steven Pressfield "Resistance takes the form of a voice in your head. And the mistake we make...is we think it's our voice." - Steven Pressfield "You certainly cannot argue with resistance. The only way is to dismiss it." - Steven Pressfield "The ego, it's based in fear. It's trying to protect us on some level." - Michelle Chalfant "When we build something big and we're here to help others, resistance is gonna pop up and rejection and failure. It's gonna happen. You keep going anyway." - Michelle Chalfant LINKS & RESOURCES Steven Pressfield Website https://stevenpressfield.com/ Steven Pressfield Instagram https://www.instagram.com/steven_pressfield/ "The War of Art" (Steven Pressfield book) https://www.amazon.com/War-Art-Through-Creative-Battles/dp/1936891026 "Govt Cheese" (Preorder: new Steven Pressfield book) https://store.stevenpressfield.com/product/govt-cheese-signed-copy/ 2023 Adult Chair® Coaching Certification - Doors Close December 16, 2022! https://theadultchair.com/certification Free 2023 Journaling Challenge - Starts in January! https://michellechalfant.com/journal/ MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

The War of Art - Steven Pressfield@artyzamanhttps://ko-fi.com/totlaterx
In this week's episode, we start by talking about this week in sports. Bama crushed Mercer while we attended a Miami Hurricanes game where a cat fell from the sky. Visiting the Hard Rock Stadium was something I've looked forward to for years, and we will be back for more games. I have recently been listening to "The War of Art | Steven Pressfield" in which he uncovers something that affects us all without us realizing it. Resistance is the voice in our head that tells us not to chase our goal. Resistance tells us that there is more time and no need to rush. Identify resistance and shine the light on it. Do it with the fear!
We all deal with stress on some level. It took me a long time to figure out how to recognize my anxiety and learn how to be more mindful of it. Michelangelo shares his discovery with mindfulness and the tools he has learned. In his Legendary book “The War of Art” Steven Pressfield writes:“The professional arms himself with patience, not only to give the stars time to align in his career but to keep himself from flaming out in each individual work. He knows that any job, whether it's a novel or a kitchen remodel, takes twice as long as he thinks and costs twice as much. . . [he] steels himself at the start of a project, reminding himself it is the Iditarod, not the sixty-yard dash. He conserves his energy. He prepares his mind for the long haul.” I've personally met very few artists who embody and practice that attitude quite as well or as consistently as Christopher Williams. Like the Professional in Pressfield's book, Chris does the work of being an artist. Little to no flash (though there's definitely some pizazz on display when he's playing that hand drum) No complaining (though he can clearly articulate the difficulty of life as a full-time artist) Little to nothing extra: Just the songs, which, 14 projects later, are better than they've ever been. This episode is a first for this podcast--a “part two” continuation of a previous episode. It features a fellow coach and my good friend, Chad James, and together we unpack the 5 ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit that I shared in Ep. 027, Breaking the Stuckness Stalemate: A Path to Transformation. When I released that episode, I was vaguely aware that it felt unfinished somehow, but I couldn’t put my finger on why. Then I got unsolicited feedback from my wife and Chad that although they really liked the episode, it felt unfinished to them, too. And Chad mentioned that the five basic ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit was the part he wanted to hear more about. That connected the dots for me on what felt unfinished and what needed to be done about it. And since I’ve been wanting to have Chad on the podcast for a while anyway, I decided to strike while the iron was hot, as it were, and kill two birds with one stone by asking Chad to join me to help land this plane that was left circling the airfield. If you haven’t already tuned in to Ep. 027, you can still listen to this one first because I summarize the big idea from that episode at the beginning of this one. But for full benefit, I do recommend listening to Ep. 027, too. It’s short and easy to digest at just 15 mins--and in it I pull back the curtain on one of my own recent episodes of stuckness on the way to making the point. Introducing Chad James Chad James is a veteran business coach with 20+ years of experience. His own experience in business and his intuitive gifting for discerning core issues, coupled with empathy, compassion, and a vast resource of tools and strategies for optimizing business and life, make Chad a highly-sought-after, highly-trusted, and valuable partner for “succeeding faster, living better, and creating the life you’ve always imagined.” He’s led an amazingly diverse and adventurous life, and he’s often picking up some new pursuit for the sake of stretching and challenging himself and embracing the “beginner’s mind” again. He has a huge heart. He brings all of who he is to his work as a coach. Chad’s also a good friend of mine and a mentor in life and business, too. In fact, he was catalytic in my development of The Graveyard Group masterminds--of which he is a founding member--and has helped me climb numerous professional learning curves more quickly than I would have on my own. The original concept out of which I developed this 2-part podcast series, “If you’re stuck, get moving,” was formulated in preparation for an event at which Chad invited me to speak. To say that he’s been influential in my life would be a huge understatement. Something New from Chad--and a Special Deal for You Chad has just launched a brand new project that I’m really excited about and I hope you’ll check out, called Mavericks--a membership-based group coaching experience that makes Chad’s wealth of wisdom, tools, and strategies available to many more than ever before, in the context of a group of others playing full-out in the game of life. I’m pumped to share that Chad’s offering Andrew Petty is Dying listeners 25% off of their first-month’s membership. Just visit carrynobrand.com, and enter the code “Andrew” at checkout. Membership is super reasonably priced at less than $100 a month, and it gives you exclusive access to Chad and his treasure trove of resources. First, a Refresher: Ep. 027 Summary If you haven’t yet tuned into part 1 of this 2-part series on breaking the stuckness stalemate, go here to tune in or read the shownotes, or read this brief summary of the main points, below: The Big Idea: If you’re stuck, get moving. Even more specifically, get moving with and through the stuckness. Other Important Stuff Supporting the Big Idea Stuck is never fun--in fact, it can actually be really painful--but stuckness is a normal and necessary part of life as a human on planet Earth. It alerts us to the fact that there’s a gap between where we are and where we want to be. And something unconscious and unknown is in our way. Stuckness is a chance to make the unconscious conscious--to generate fresh insight to which we can then apply action and achieve some sort of transformation. Because Insight + Action = Transformation. The stuckness is always there for a reason. With practice, we can learn to see the stuckness as an indicator that we’re on the brink of a new opportunity to grow and evolve. But moving through stuckness to the good stuff beyond is less like the caterpillar emerging from a caterpillar than it is like a snake shedding its skin. It takes effort and intention and time--and it’s uncomfortable. The accompanying psychological pain of stuckness is essential, though. Our desire for relief from it motivates us to do the work to get unstuck. The discomfort is necessary to produce the insights that lead to action that result in some kind of transformation. Stuckness is a guide appointed by our hearts and minds to show us the way to something even better. We have choices, of course, when stuckness shows up. Broadly speaking, we can retreat from it, stall out in the face of it, or advance through it. Neither retreating nor stalling out will produce a good result. Only advancing through it will. Here are five basic ingredients in the recipe for using stuckness to our benefit: Become familiar with your own tell-tale signs of stuckness. In my experience, some of the typical signs include irritability, distractedness, restless energy, a lack of focus, and loss of a sense of humor. Acknowledge that you’re stuck, and invite the stuckness to teach you. This acceptance will create the openness of heart and mind that allows the unconscious to be made conscious. Don’t fight it or try to muscle your way past it. Resistance or avoidance or sheer force of will makes the stuckness an enemy rather than a useful mentor. Take 100% responsibility for your stuckness. It’s your problem--no one else’s. Request help from others--friends, experts, a therapist, whomever or whatever seems appropriate to the situation--but retain full ownership of the problem and the solution. Tap into the negative energy--frustration, anger, etc.--to fuel positive forward movement through the stuckness. Finally, get moving--with and through the stuckness. So, if you’re stuck, get moving. Even more specifically, get moving through the stuckness so it can teach us what it’s there for. The more skillful we become at leveraging life’s many encounters with stuckness, the more we will milk out of this life, the more we will bring into it for our own fulfillment and others’ benefit, and the fewer deathbed regrets we’ll have. Now, Part 2! Now, without further ado, let’s jump into the meat of this episode--part 2 of Breaking the Stuckness Stalemate: The 5 Ingredients in the Recipe for Using Stuckness to Our Benefit, with Chad James! Since this part 2 episode focuses on unpacking the 5 ingredients in much greater depth and detail, I’ll organize what follows under subheadings for each ingredient. I won’t come close to capturing all of the great stuff, so tune in to the full episode for more. Ingredient 1: Get Acquainted With It Become familiar with the tell-tale signs of stuckness. In my experience, some of the typical signs include irritability, distractedness, restless energy, a lack of focus, and loss of a sense of humor. Some key points from this part of the discussion: It’s important to recognize the primary emotion you’re experiencing. Sometimes, somatic (physical) indicators appear first in times of mental (psychological) stuckness--even before we’re aware of the specific emotion. So training ourselves to become more aware of our specific “psychosomatic” early warning signs is an important part of using stuckness to our benefit. For Chad, common psychosomatic indicators are sensations in the center of his chest and tightness in his neck. This helps us avoid the instinctive “fight or flight” response to discomfort and unpleasant emotions--and move with and through the stuckness instead. We brought Steven Pressfield’s concept of Resistance--a form of stuckness--into the conversation, from his fantastic book, The War of Art. (To get the essence of this Resistance idea (and a whole lot more) w/out first reading the whole book, tune into Tim Ferriss’ recent interview with Steven Pressfield.) Chad had this to say, “I think that one of the very important concepts in taking things to the next level is understanding--not just understanding but accepting and maybe even celebrating--that Resistance is part of that journey. So as we see that Resistance, that could be an exciting moment, it could be an awesome moment, it could be an area where we go, "Oh wait, something cool's about to happen!" When we change our relationship with Stuckness / Resistance, we can learn the lesson it’s there to teach us and achieve the transformation available on the other side. The hard way--through the stuckness, for example--is often the best way. And more... Ingredient 2: Acknowledge It Acknowledge that you’re stuck, and invite the stuckness to teach you. This acceptance will create the openness of heart and mind that allows the unconscious to be made conscious. Don’t fight it or try to muscle your way past it. Resistance or avoidance or sheer force of will makes the stuckness an enemy rather than a useful mentor. Some key points from this part of the discussion: “The faster we energetically acknowledge that something is wrong...the faster we can begin to take action toward fixing it. And often that action...just has to do with moving toward it.” -Chad If I fail to acknowledge it, I start living my life in avoidance of it. So it’s still calling the shots. It’s better to just acknowledge it, deal with it, and move on. Ingredient 3: Own It Take 100% responsibility for your stuckness. It’s your problem--no one else’s. Request help from others--friends, experts, a therapist, whomever or whatever seems appropriate to the situation--but retain full ownership of the problem and the solution. Some key points from this part of the discussion: Nobody’s coming to save you--as Chad’s Air Force Colonel dad reminded him as a kid. As adults, it’s our job to self-rescue. If we expect or demand that others will fix our stuckness, we’ll get into victim territory and create unnecessary collateral damage. So I hear...not that I have any recent personal experience with this… Take responsibility first. Then enroll others to help you. Your spouse / significant other is not your therapist. Ingredient 4: Harness It Tap into the negative energy--frustration, anger, etc.--to fuel positive forward movement through the stuckness. Some key points from this part of the discussion: “Be with” the discomfort of stuckness. If we’re constantly fighting it, we can’t act our way out of it. If we didn't have some of the pain associated with these moments of stuckness, we'd lack the motivation to grow. Cognitive dissonance pulls us forward. Slow down. If we're inclined to believe that we can't slow down for an episode of stuckness, then we’re going to revisit it again later. The stuckness will recur and build until you HAVE to pay attention to it--often at a much higher cost. If we slow down, be with it, and rely on the fact that we've been here before--then we tend to put ourselves in a better place for action. And a plethora (cue The Three Amigos clip…) of metaphors to help us “see” what we’re saying--from dirtbike racing to soccer and mountain biking and flying a plane. As in these things, so in life! Ingredient 5: Take Action Finally, get moving--with and through the stuckness. Some key points from this part of the discussion: If nothing else, simply be sure to take some action, to move in some way. If you’re stuck, get moving. Good action is never wishing the problem would go away. Good action starts from the point of stuckness and moves forward from there. Action with intention toward our stuckness always solves our problem better. It’s important to act on the insights we gain from slowing down to learn what the stuckness is there for. Take action on what you learn so the insight can produce transformation. Insight + Action = Transformation. There are things we simply can’t know without taking action. You can’t pre-solve stuckness. You can’t think your way out of stuckness. You have to act your way out of stuckness. That’s It In a Nutshell. Now It’s Your Turn. With Chad’s help and over two episodes, I’ve done what I can to help us understand stuckness, upgrade our relationship with it, and use it to our benefit. Now it’s your turn. What are one or two insights you’ve gained on this topic than you can put to work in your own life right now? Break the Stuckness Stalemate in Your Own Life I hope this episode has helped you evolve your relationship with stuckness--our challenging but normal and necessary companion in life. We all experience it. That invisible, self-sabotaging force that lives between you and your most expressed self. Today’s guest calls it ‘Resistance’. He’s cracked how to overcome it—and the process required to birth your best work.Meet author Steven Pressfield—a man who has profoundly impacted my life and how I pursue creative expression.A former Marine, Duke graduate, and journeyman of countless jobs, Steven had been writing in obscurity for three decades before his first published novel became a smash success. Molded on archetypes lifted from the Bhagavad Gita, The Legend of Bagger Vance made it’s way all the way to the big screen, starring Matt Damon and Will Smith. Now revered for his creative prolificacy, Steven has 20 books to his name, including the military novels Tides of War and Gates of Fire, currently on the curriculum at the Naval War College and West Point.More relevant to today’s discourse, Steven has authored some of the most impactful books ever written on the fundamentals of pursuing a creative life. Collectively, The War of Art, Do The Work, and Turning Pro are books I’ve read and make a point to re-read annually. Practical treatises on the human relationship with authentic expression, they provide a disciplined approach to birth the work we were born to create.Steven’s latest offering, A Man At Arms, is a historical novel about the Roman Empire, a reluctant hero, and the rise of Christianity in First Century Jerusalem. Cinematic in it’s sweep, think Gladiator meets The Road Warrior.A personal hero, meeting Steven has always been a dream. Today he shares his story. And it’s everything I hoped it would be.Steven will tell you that creativity isn’t about talent. It’s about discipline. But it’s also about reverence for the mystical—courting The Muse to connect with that inimitable force that breathes beyond our conscious awareness. However, The Muse only shows up when you respect the grind as sacred. An excavation of this process, this conversation is an absolute masterclass on all things creativity, served up with a healthy dose of perseverance, persistence, patience, and the heavy lifting required to eliminate distraction and make manifest the dormant, authentic voice within. It’s also about dispelling the myth that great art is the purview of the chosen few. Or that it comes easy to those so touched. We all have something worthy to say. We can all benefit from learning how to better express our truth.“Our job in this life is not to shape ourselves into some ideal we imagine we ought to be, but to find out who we already are and become it.”The spirit of this exchange is to empower this ideal. The visually inclined can watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Final note: Some unfortunate construction noise next door periodically invades the audio dojo. Apologies for the distraction.I hold Steven and his work in the highest regard. My hope is that this conversation will leave you feeling the same.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsors:Athletic Greens: 75 whole food sourced ingredients designed to optimize 5 key areas of health, Athletic Greens is the delicious daily habit that sets you up for a healthy future. Do you find yourself procrastinating and unable to overcome the negative self-talk of why you can't do something great? 'The War Of Art' is a fabulous kick in the pants by Steven Pressfield. In this book he explains his concept of 'Resistance', which is essentially the force that stops one from achieving the internal desire of creating and accomplishing something. It is similar to procrastination but he talks about it in a way that makes it easier to understand and overcome. The book is split into 3 sections on this topic and explains Pressfield's own methods of 'invoking the muse' and the mindset required to constantly combat 'Resistance'.Juan had this to say about the book. "It did prove to me that as I read on and on (as Kyrin suggested), by the tail end of the book I was consuming it as fast as possible in a way that I just wanted to get stuck into it. By the end I really really enjoyed it. So for me it was an 8/10."If you'd like to support us and grab the book - make sure you use this link! https://amzn.to/3hTbmoQTimeline:(0:00) - Intro and background(1:46) - Themes: defining 'Resistance'(4:18) - Combating 'Resistance' & turning pro(5:20) - Beyond 'Resistance' & the higher realm(7:56) - Key takeaway: difference between the hierarchical vs territorial mindsetAs always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Connect with Mere Mortals:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast/Support the show

KNOW BULL in this space Thinkers , we are in a new era of THINKING, where it is cooler to have reason than riots. Where we find sustainable power in the realm of unbiased rather than choosing a side. Chapter 1 is a warm up for us thinkers to get used to the idea that there is already an established path that moves in the direction that we grant authority towards. They realize that these habits have been completely reinforced over time and they can choose to fight back and take control...if they're willing to make that trade off.” On the importance of focus - “It's not really about time management. It's more about getting the right things done. It's one thing to talk about being a faster runner or a better performer or getting more things done in fewer hours. It's another to make sure you're doing the right stuff because it doesn't matter how hard you're working. If you're not focusing on what matters, then you won’tget the results you want.” On maximizing your day - “That's one concept that sticks with folks, that it's okay to not be a hundred percent the entire day. I mean, we're not machines. We're not like laptops where if we simply have power, we can just run at a hundred percent capacity and run multiple programs at the same time. We have peaks and we have troughs, and if we don't manage our energy over the course of the day, we have long periods where we're just burned out and can't do anything.” On finding your strengths - “I think something that's really, really important for folks to learn as they try different careers and potentially go down rabbit holes that may serve them or may not serve them, is to keep a keen eye on what gives them energy and what drains them. Because ultimately, it gives you real insights into what's going on on a daily basis; and will help make you fulfilled and feel like you're growing.” *Recommendation & Resources List:* * LinkedIn: Lucas Miller ( https://t.sidekickopen78.com/s1t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7lC8dDMPbW2n0x6l2B9nMJN7t5XZsS9MPFW1q7sYY4WYsWqW2BgSpx56dvyCf6FkV7Y02?pi=4182f864-6da8-4909-983f-f6cf9fdb76cb&si=5870249511223296&te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3ZWVWBW3K2-zv1JxwY5W1Lyz993Z_TDQW4cGns941VFmPf3ZVdkX04 ) * Stoa Partners ( https://stoa.partners/ ) * Beyond Brilliance: The Blueprint for Learning Anything ( https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Brilliance-Blueprint-Learning-Anything/dp/1540421236/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=lucas+miller&qid=1590592226&sr=8-2 ) by Lucas Miller * The War of Art ( https://www.amazon.com/The-War-of-Art-Steven-Pressfield-audiobook/dp/B07PTBYH2G/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+war+of+art&qid=1590592276&sr=8-1 ) by Steven Pressfield * Berkeley Free Ventures ( https://www.freeventures.org/ ) Looking for other stories of Haasies?

You will inevitably come across days that you just don't feel like making music. The thing that differentiates a professional from an amateur is the amateur does it when he/she feels like it; the professional does it no matter what. If you can make music on the days you are tired, uninspired, and lacking motivation, you can do it any time! This podcast was inspired by a student question. He asked "How do I get inspired to make music?" It's a great question, but I think it contains some underlying beliefs that need to be addressed. In this episode I encourage you to hunt for inspiration. To make yourself inspired. If you wait for inspiration, you'll never get anything done. Listen on iTunes or Stitcher or Google Play Show Notes: The AfroDJMac Music Production Club - Get new production tools in your inbox every month. The War of Art - Steven Pressfield's life changing book on making great art. DiViNCi - Some powerful lessons on creativity and productivity from DiViNCi's talk on the Music Production Podcast. A solid routine fosters a well-worn groove for one’s mental energies and helps stave off the tyranny of moods. In this episode of Made You Think, Neil and I discuss Daily Rituals by Mason Currey. In this book, Currey edits together first-hand accounts from different artists and creative thinkers of how they went about their everyday lives. “I write when the spirit moves me,” said, “and the spirit moves me every day.” – Faulkner. We cover a wide range of topics, including: The problem with lifestyle gurus. Whether drugs enhance genius. Coffee’s role in causing the Renaissance. How people in far-off countries let each other know they were alive before the internet. Beethoven’s perfect cup of Joe. Why you should pin notes to your clothes' Night Owls vs. Early Birds - who gets more worms. Hacks to become an morning person. And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey! If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out our episode on 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Broad interpretation of artists, anyone who does creative or critical thinking work. 01:24 – There’s a surprising amount of drug-use in this book, lots of alcohol, and not sleeping. On the one hand this seemed undisciplined, but on the other these people did have very regular schedules. There was discipline to keep these activities in a well-worn groove. 01:53 – A hangover can make it easier to write – your brain can be more focused. In some ways it’s like the opposite of being caffeinated. 03:10 – The book has an interesting layout, there’s no attempt at narrative, each chapter is about a new person’s routine. 03:54 – Taleb keeps no routine, he doesn’t even use a calendar. 04:00 – Small gripe with books like this as these are idealized and narrativized versions of these rituals. None of them get drunk and yell at people on Twitter. Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re only true 20-50% of the time. 04:55 – Problem with a lot of the lifestyle guru type people. They don’t do all of that stuff everyday. Except Jocko, he’s never overslept in the last 15 years. His morning routine seems to be the same wherever he is. 06:02 – Maintaining a normal schedule when you travel across time zones helps you adapt way faster. The minute you go back to your hotel you’ll crash, it’s game over! Jet lag is a strange tiredness, especially if you drink coffee, like you’re wired and drunk at the same time. 08:00 – Questioning whether you can save up a store of sleep for a rainy day. Apparently you can’t front load it, but when you get into debt you need to pay it back! 08:46 – Types of polyphasic sleep. Buckminster Fuller developed dymaxion sleep, he did it for two years and he’s the only one who’s ever been able to do it. 5-10% of the population legitimately need less sleep. Everyone else thinks they’re in that group but they’re not. 09:05 – When they tried one study on polyphasic sleep the subject just crashed and they could not wake him up. 11:43 – Is it quote or quotation? Don’t want to anger the grammar people! 11:55 – Download all of our episodes to find out whether one of our team is part of the alt-right. 12:58 – Auden was popping Benzedrine all the time. He regarded it as a “labor saving device,” a daily multivitamin. In the mental kitchen alongside alcohol, coffee and tobacco. 13:40 – Were these people great producers because of these habits or despite them? Question of whether the live-fast, die-young lifestyle enhances genius. 16:22 – Personal experiences and use of some drugs. Coffee for work and productivity, micro-dosing LSD for the same. Marijuana for an after wine session. Fear of getting hooked with tobacco vs alcohol. 18:34 – Ritalin/Aterol for effortless full-speed ahead concentration. 20:12 – Doctors overprescribe Aterol – 90% of people taking it don’t need it. It’s very hard to quit, people get frustrated at never hitting the same level of quality. In some ways similar to steroids. 22:26 – The Renaissance happened when people stopped drinking beer all day and switched to coffee. 22:36 – Drinking habits around the world. Beer used to be brewed as water wasn’t safe to drink. They would steep the same grains up to four times. In Asia they would drink tea all day, which is probably why they were historically more productive than Europe. 24:55 – In sushi bars in Tokyo they have a tap of green tea. In Germany they give you beer, Americans drink water and now they’re more productive because they’re hydrated. 25:53 – Tangent – Most people who are in America now, their ancestors were the risk-takers. The people who took the initiative to leave behind everything they knew. So culturally this is ingrained. 26:59 – People used booked calls to let family on the other side of the world know they were alive before Skype. 27:40 – The history of pokes on Facebook – they would let a non-friend see your profile for a few days without actually becoming your friend. 29:10 – A significant number of people featured in the book seemed to have OCD, they were trying to control chaos. Beethoven’s coffee had to have 60 beans a cup. Kant had an extremely orderly schedule. The clock tower in town stayed on time less passionately than Kant. 32:00 – Everyone has odd habits, especially artists who spend a lot of time in their heads. 32:21 – The general impression of Benjamin Franklin is “early to bed, early to rise” but he seemed to set his 13 virtues up as goals rather than things he’d achieved. Comparing Ben Franklin to Tim Ferriss. People disapprove of others not following their own advice to the letter. 35:53 – Controversy when one updates his opinions. 36:16 – It’s surprising how few hours people worked – the bulk of the creative work was 5-6 hours a day, max. Darwin was famous for having two 3 hour work blocks. It’s hard to do creative work for longer. But good for mental energy. 38:00 – Tangent. It’s hard to be spontaneous in New York. Phone calls are scheduled a week in advance. Time management tips: set regular stand-ups, only book meetings at certain times. Color-code your calendar. 40:30 – Work environments are moving towards being more results orientated, moving away from people just sitting at their desks doing nothing. A relic of the production line. Schedule Tetris in large corporations. 43:26 – Hack. Schedule hour meetings for 40 minutes, or half hour meetings for 20 minutes. It forces people to condense. 44:58 – Data should make it easier for people to get paid based on productivity rather than time. For consulting jobs, it doesn’t make sense to charge based on time. Historically, time was the best way of measuring output and so this made sense. 47:43 – Education is also stuck in this time loop since it was originally influenced by factory organization. Most interesting ideas that end up leading somewhere come from play, from free time. 49:21 – After unsuccessfully trying for ten years in New York, Henry Miller had given up writing, when he finally wrote a novel in Paris it was published without editing, there’s sentences that just stop mid-way. Seeing from outside, it seems these creatives are able to follow a routine without anyone forcing them. 51:44 – Jordan Peterson says there’s no such thing as writer’s block. If you’re stuck it’s because you have run out of things to say, you need to unblock yourself. 53:10 – Sleep and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends, may make you feel much more energized. Sleeping in on the weekend it’s almost like changing time zones every five days. 56:41 – Giveaways are coming, sign up for the email list. 57:03 – To remember to do important things pin a piece of paper on a different piece of your clothing, a form of mnemonics. 58:15 – When you first wake up, that’s a different person. You have to find ways of tricking him into not hitting snooze. Routines and replacement can help you get past undesirable behavior. 59:04 – Sponsor time. Mushroom elixir from Four Sigmatic and bone broth from Kettle & Fire along with Perfecto Keto collagen. Use them to replace alcohol in the evening! 1:01:38 – Despite living in climate controlled environments, we still feel like it’s cold outside when it’s winter, even though it’s the same temperature where we are. 1:03:30 – Some people’s capacity for alcohol is so far beyond the average. If you’re regimented and disciplined you could physically drink a bottle of spirits a day. 1:07:15 – Sugar is like a mild form of cocaine. It’s a stimulant followed by a crash. Hormetic stressors are only “natural”. 1:09:20 – Psycho-active drugs don’t make your brain do things it can’t do, they mimic neural pathways. Maybe adaptation is down-regulating the amount of neurochemicals being released in response to the trigger. If you know, write in! 1:11:36 – Morning Working vs Night-time working theme. More of the creators were geared towards mornings but it wasn’t across the board. Evolutionarily, it doesn’t make sense for humans to want to work at night. 1:14:20 – Waking up hack. Trick yourself into getting up by telling yourself you can go back to bed in 30 minutes if you’re still tired. 1:14:45 – Wrap-up and sponsor time. Perfecto Keto is perfect for all your ketogenic diet needs. Exogenous coffee-flavored ketones. Their matcha MCT oil powder is highly recommended for focusing. You can use the MCT oil with a Four Sigmatic mushroom coffee or your hot chocolate, all 15% OFF through our sponsored link or use the coupon code mentioned. Kettle & Fire will give you 20% OFF on their delicious bone broths –beef recommended for cooking, and chicken for a good, hot wintery drink– and free shipping! Listen to know how to get a mushroom-flavored bone broth. And you can always support us by going through our Amazon sponsored link and checking out our Support page. 1:20:50 – The new Gilgamesh cryptocurrency is building a social network built on knowledge sharing. This week Matt Fulchiron, a stand up comedian and the host of "The Full Charge Power Hour" podcast, hears me the book "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield.
In a lot of ways we are our own worst enemy. We self-sabotage. We procrastinate. We put roadblocks in our own way, and we make excuses for our behavior to make us feel better ourselves when things don't go our way. We all do it, but why? And is there something we can do about it? The simple answer is yes, and in this episode I get into how so that you can get out of your own way and finally make things happen for yourself. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: The reason you don’t do the things you know you need to and why you must have these 4 tools in your arsenal to change your self-defeating behavior... for good How Craig was able to find a way to overcome his challenges, training and toughness to become part of the Special Operations Force (SOF) team—and how you can use his strategy to win when times get hard The “opposite rule” and how embracing it will help you stop quitting so that you don't have to start from ground zero ever again How to break the underlying patterns that are taking you away from your goals How to face your fears and go after everything that you’ve ever wanted in your life How to turn your fears into your strength and how I used this strategy to get over my debilitating fear of public speaking Why your feelings are false, how they’re messing up your results, and how you change can the behavior The question that will put a stop to your bad habits and help you focus on your actions so that you can drive your life towards what's most important The one thing that connects all of the healthiest cultures in the world and how it can help you improve your health, business and personal life LINKS AND RESOURCES: Vigor Ground Fitness and Business Summit: www.VigorGroundSummit.com Book: Essentialism - The Disciplined Pursuit of Less (Gregg McKeown): https://goo.gl/6CJPqt Aubrey Marcus Podcast: https://goo.gl/EQo4Ku Take Control of Your Body, Nutrition and Life Seminar: https://goo.gl/C9GAFs Vigor Ground Fitness and Performance: www.VigorGroundFitness.com Book: The War of Art (Steven Pressfield): https://goo.gl/jRSq8C Book: Turning Pro - Tap Your Inner Power and Create Your Life’s Work (Steven Pressfield): https://goo.gl/j4UZpD Book: Do The Work - Overcome Resistance and Get Out Of Your Own Way (Steven Pressfield): https://goo.gl/qPZTPN Thanks so much for joining me this week. Welcome to Enhancing The Human Experience; the podcast designed to help you get the most out of life. In this first episode I share a little about myself, and also talk about what you can expect from future episodes of the show. Additionally, I share what I feel is the cause of great experiences in life and talk about the model for personal development as I see it. You'll see why personal development will be an underlying theme of this show. Thank you for checking out the show, I appreciate it! Show Notes I share a little about myself and my background. I'm passionate about sharing practical techniques, knowledge, and wisdom to help you get the most out of life. I also enjoy creating tools (books, systems, and plans, etc.) built around these ideas. On future episodes of the show, expect to discover practical ways to enhance the human experience and get the most out of life. Expect a big focus to be on the inner causes of the circumstances we encounter in the physical plane. I'm a big fan of the famous statement "As within, so without". So I'll be spending a lot of time talking about best practices for developing the consciousness of the circumstances and experiences you want to have in life. I believe our lives are an out-picturing of the way we see ourselves, others, and the world at large. When we change our self-concept, or self-image, changes everything. Expect interviews with a wide variety of interesting and successful individuals. Expect the show to evolve. I'll always be asking the big questions like; "How can I serve you better? How can I help you get what you want in all areas of your life faster and more effectively? Expect a new episode every Monday. The name of the show is loosely based on something a meditation teacher of mine once said. One Sentence Summary: To enhance your experience, begin by enhancing yourself; by developing your mind (thinking thoughts that support the outcomes you want), your body (by eating pure, wholesome, nutritious food and exercising regularly), and your soul (by taking action despite fear, doubt, uncertainty, or worry). Quote of the Week: The purpose of human life is the discovery of Truth, the unitive knowledge of the Godhead. The degree to which this unitive knowledge is achieved here on earth determines the degree to which it will be enjoyed in the posthumous state. Contemplation of truth Is the end, action the means. ~ Bhagavad-Gita, The Song of God, Translated by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood Resources Mentioned: Harmonic Wealth (The Movie): Attract the Life You Want The Silva Mind Control Method The War of Art - Steven Pressfield's incredible book on pushing through the resistance within Additional Resources: Just Be It! - Improve your performance and your results in any area of your life quickly and easily! The B&E Podcast #040 "Being in a Relationship with or as an Artist" iTunes Link: https://itun.es/i6hv7ck SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: Today we get into the nuances of a romantic relationship with or as an artist. As we discover, it comes down to what's important in all relationships. Being encouraging and open is still the key. POINT #1: "ARTISTS HAVE A FEW PARTICULARS, BUT RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE SAME" -Artists can and tend to be sensitive types who work irregular hours and don't make consistent incomes, but other than that it's the same relationship foundations that will make it come together. POINT #2: "SUPPORT EACH OTHER" -An artist has a lot of insecurity in their line of work, so support and encouragement is huge. AS an artist, don't think that you're the only one who needs it -- everyone is going through their struggles. POINT #3: "YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS AN ACT OF CREATION" - At the end of the day, it takes two to make a relationship work. It requires love and joy, trust and openness, understanding and nurturing -- make time for two people to be with one another. Gadgets Hier gibt’s was zum anfassen. Logitech Keys-To-Go (Timecode 00:17:00) Klein, handlich, Spritzwasser-geschützt und in mehreren Farben erhältlich: Logitech’s Keys-To-Go. The prices are truly insane for such a shitty product, for that kind of money I’d say it’s worth to buy a Wacom bamboo and get a ton better performance on your coffeshop creative session. Serious cash for a stylish pen with quite a few quirks and a best case bulky-crayon sketch feeling. Either a Wacom bamboo digitizer or the Adobe ink kit. Powerbar 2 Demonstration from Innovation Fitness on Vimeo. Andreas will damit eure kreative Ader fördern. Dazu passend ein 1½ Minuten langer Stummfilm: Highland Promo from Quote Unquote Apps on Vimeo. Minecraft bzw. Minecraft Modpacks: Direwolf20 | Feed the Beast Mailbox for Mac (beta) (Timecode 00:46:40) Zur Zeit nur GoogleMail und iCloud. You can use it to highlight words, automatically respond to prompts, notify you when something important happens, and more. Auflistung: Was alles in .DS_Store Dateien gesammelt wird. Metadaten halt… Web Apps oder Skripte FileBot (Timecode 01:20:00) FileBot - The ultimate TV and Movie Renamer / Subtitle Downloader. Verschiedenes So… jetzt geht’s in zeitlerische Gefilde. Fully Present, The Science, Art, and Practice of Mindfulness (Timecode 01:34:30) Von Ω zu Ommm. The War of Art (Timecode 01:42:30) Steven Pressfield’s Buch kämpft mit euch um Kunst und das Schreiben von Büchern gegen kreative Blockaden und Co. Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you’ve got. Sunflex snakebyte power:cube Extender Universal. In Spenderlaune?
