Ian Morgan Cron, author of Chasing Francis and Jesus, My Father, the CIA and Me, joins Jennifer Pepito to discuss his newest book The Fix. It is a beautiful book about healing addictions and the spiritual growth that can be found through the 12 step program.  So often in Christian culture, we are quick to categorise addictions as the painfully obvious like alcohol, porn, food addictions, anger, but co-dependency on our spouses or our children, addiction to control, addiction to negative thinking, to complaining are also addictions. All of these can shroud our lives in a grey weightiness, damage our relationships, and steal our joy. The Fix which dives into the 12 steps and how, when we start with laying our burden at the feet of Jesus and admit we cannot carry it all, we can begin to heal. Welcome to another episode of the Restoring the Soul podcast with your host, Michael John Cusick. Today, we have the pleasure of diving into a profound and transformative conversation with Ian Morgan Cron. Ian is not just a friend to Michael but a celebrated author of books like "The Road Back to You," and his deeply impactful spiritual memoir, "Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me," as well as his novel "Chasing Francis."In this episode, we take a close look at Ian's latest book, "The Fix: How the 12 Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down and Out, and Everyone in Between." Ian shares candidly about his own journey through addiction and recovery, emphasizing how the 12 steps can profoundly impact anyone's life, not just those battling addiction.Even if you consider yourself "well-adjusted" or far from the grip of addiction, this conversation will challenge you to rethink what it means to truly live a life of transformation and spiritual awakening. Michael and Ian explore how all of us, in some way or another, have compulsive relationships with behaviors, substances, or people that affect our lives negatively. They delve into the essence of the 12 steps, their application beyond mere addiction recovery, and how they serve as a robust spiritual framework aligning us with God and our authentic selves.Ian's vulnerability stands out as he shares personal stories, including a relapse in 2020 that led to a renewed understanding and deeper application of these steps. Together, Michael and Ian discuss the importance of community, admitting powerlessness, the role of the ego, and the journey toward a spiritual awakening.ENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!

This is a fantastic conversation with Ian Morgan Cron about his new book "The Fix" and the transformative power of the 12 steps. Ian makes the case that the 12 steps offer a path of healing and recovery not just for addicts, but for anyone struggling with that universal human condition of feeling "not at home" in this world. The key, as Ian explains it, is starting with that crucial admission of powerlessness - that we can't fix ourselves through willpower alone. And that opens the door to surrendering to a higher power and allowing God to do for us what we can't do for ourselves. Ian gets incredibly personal, sharing his own journey of addiction and recovery, and how practices like centering prayer have helped him develop the capacity to truly bear and receive love. Ian argues the 12 steps can address the root spiritual issues underlying all kinds of compulsive behaviors and addictions, not just drugs and alcohol. He makes a compelling case that this path of transformation is available to everyone, whether you identify as an addict or not. The 12 steps offer a "program for living" that can lead to deep healing and freedom. This was a rich, nuanced, and grace-filled conversation that I think will really resonate with a lot of people struggling with that sense of not being at home in themselves or the world. Ian brings such vulnerability and wisdom to these timeless questions of how we find our way back to wholeness. It's the kind of conversation that stays with you. So join us as we find our way back home. It's not just among leaders. It's, it's our entrepreneurs. Self awareness is a key predictor of success in our marriages, in our relationship with our children, with friends, with ourselves, with our higher power.”“Understanding who you are, how you show up for life, what the motivations, the hidden motivations are that drive our ways of typically acting, thinking, and feeling.”[19:00] Understanding Others “The Enneagram provides us with a low resolution picture of the interior world,  of yourself and other people.”“Even if you got 10% more clarity about the inner experience of other people, that's a giant leap forward, a huge leap forward.”“The amazing thing is that you begin to develop this wisdom in your approach to other people.”“You also start to learn, “oh, this is how people experience me”'“I've been able to, in real time,  make decisions about how I relate to others, because I know there are types.”[27:00] Story of you ..”Realizing I can change the story. I have agency and freedom to rewrite the narrative of my life, in a way that I can take responsibility for the story.”“I can be loved for more than what I do for others”"Knowing your number is the beginning towards self awareness"[44:00] Rewriting your story“You have to change the story you tell yourself.”“It's about seeing the story that got you there… but it is no longer serving you”“The healing is learning to take the mask off”Connect With Ianhttps://www.instagram.com/ianmorgancron/Listeners may download the first chapter of Ian's newest book, The Story Of You, in audio form: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15aBxUqTpAmGcUKv0GtsWFs8zN_84o3OZ/viewYOU are invited to Join me each month for 75 minutes of virtual breathwork JULY 13th @ 4:00pm PST!
