The room fills with laughter when Ali Wong unabashedly enacts her vulgar, bodily desires. What is the affect created through these performances? At different localities and temporalities, an actress and a comedian Tang Wei and Ali Wong embody ever-failing meaning of Chineseness, offering themselves for consumption and survival. In Vulgar Beauty: Acting Chinese in the Global Sensorium (Duke UP, 2022), Mila Zuo re-evaluates beauty to understand how it creates a feeling Chineseness, engendering a messy world of relationalities that challenge a stable binary of national identity. Using weidao, which escapes meaning in English as flavor and style of a person, object, or environment, Zuo challenges the Cartesian epistemology dividing mind/body and vision/hearing. Through in-depth analysis of films and shows, Zuo asks how five flavors of Chinese medicine, “bitter, salty, pungent, sweet, and sour” become “modalities of vulgar beauty” (33). Vulgar, often tied to the non-western and working-class bodies, becomes a means to complicate the relations between objecthood and subjecthood embodied in Chinese beauty. This week, we take our final look at the Journey to the West, fast-forwarding all the way to the end. Today, we will look at the last three chapters of the novel, Chapters 98-100, thinking about how this passage sums up the journey, and discussing questions of Chineseness in the novel.
Today, the Chinese Literature Podcast asks the ultimate geopolitical question: Is Taiwan Chinese? Actually, we are looking at a book titled Is Taiwan Chinese, an anthropological study by Melissa Brown that examines how identity, Chineseness and ethnicity are constituted on both sides of the Taiwan Straits...that is just a fancy way of saying that identity is something that one does rather than something that one is. We look at Brown's exploration of that process in China and Taiwan.
Working at the intersection of race, class, gender, sexuality, Jen Sungshine collaborates with fellow Love Intersections artists to celebrate diasporic narratives of queer identities. Jen joins host Am Johal to discuss art making and storytelling as a tool to address systemic racism and build understanding in conversations about gender and sexuality. Michelle is a Chinese American, who uses Tiktok to share Chinese dance with the world. A third year student at UC Berkeley, Michelle is the head choreographer for Berkeley's Fei Tian dance team, and an asexuality activist who openly shares her experiences and advocates for the awareness of LGBTQIA community. We discuss the challenges she faced growing up as an American-born Chinese, and the intersectionality of her ethnicity and her queer identity.
Natalie Cheung is a British-born Chinese, and the woman behind Yellow Bee Pod - a podcast that sheds light on the highs and lows of the East + Southeast Asian diaspora in the UK and beyond. We talked about our definition of Chineseness, how we can appreciate diversity within the Chinese community without stepping on each other, and embracing the cross-cultural identities of Chinese and Asian diasporas.

In this episode, I am talking about the influence of classical music in China with Dr Shzr Ee Tan, Senior Lecturer and an ethnomusicologist at Royal Holloway, University of London. China is a country, which has undoubtedly had a massive impact on the classical music industry in many ways, and very much continues to impact the classical sector. I am British-born Chinese myself, and this interview was recorded a few days after Chinese New Year officially finished so I thought it would be rather pertinent to make an episode on the role of Western classical music in China. This varied interview certainly challenges many of the common stereotypes of how classical music is viewed in China. It includes topics such as the history of Western art music in China, political influences, transnationalism, cultural flows and the multiplicities of classical music activities in China today. We also discuss the identities of Chinese classical musicians such as Lang Lang, Yuja Wang and Zhu Xiao-Mei, and how classical music is impacting the younger generation of Chinese musicians, for example, in conservatoires both in China and overseas. Finally, we consider what the future of classical music in China might look like. The main point to emphasise is that the idea of “Chineseness” in classical music should not be seen as one-way or monolithic but in terms of multiple identities and exchanges. Mandarin Brazil; Race, Representation, and Memory By: Ana Paulina Lee In Mandarin Brazil, Ana Paulina Lee explores the centrality of Chinese exclusion to the Brazilian nation-building project, tracing the role of cultural representation in producing racialized national categories. Lee considers depictions of Chineseness in Brazilian popular music, literature, and visual culture, as well as archival documents and Brazilian and Qing dynasty diplomatic correspondence about opening trade and immigration routes between Brazil and China. In so doing, she reveals how Asian racialization helped to shape Brazil's image as a racial democracy. Mandarin Brazil begins during the second half of the nineteenth century, during the transitional period when enslaved labor became unfree labor—an era when black slavery shifted to "yellow labor" and racial anxieties surged. Lee asks how colonial paradigms of racial labor became a part of Brazil's nation-building project, which prioritized "whitening," a fundamentally white supremacist ideology that intertwined the colonial racial caste system with new immigration labor schemes. By considering why Chinese laborers were excluded from Brazilian nation-building efforts while Japanese migrants were welcomed, Lee interrogates how Chinese and Japanese imperial ambitions and Asian ethnic supremacy reinforced Brazil's whitening project. Mandarin Brazil contributes to a new conversation in Latin American and Asian American cultural studies, one that considers Asian diasporic histories and racial formation across the Americas.

Andrea Louie is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology and director of the Asian Pacific American Studies program at MSU. She has conducted research exploring how ideas constructed around “Chineseness” as a racial and cultural identity have been reworked as transnational processes bring Chinese from different parts of the world into contact with one another. She is interested in using multi-sited ethnography to examine relationships between globalization and the continued importance of native origins and place for the rooting of identities. Her book “Chineseness Across Borders: Re-negotiating Chinese Identities in China and the U.S.” won the Association for Asian American Studies Social Sciences book award in 2006. Her current research focuses on the “cultural socialization” and racialization of children adopted from China in the U.S. She earned her doctorate in cultural anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley.
