The holidays are usually a time for socializing, celebrations, and cocktails. However, some people decide to bring in the new year by not indulging in alcohol at all by participating in Dry January. Dry January is a month where one refrains from drinking any alcohol as a personal challenge. According to Dr. Melissa Brown, UPMC Clinical Psychologist, society has played a role in the challenge of becoming more popular. “I think it's just as we it became popular, just as we, you know, as a society have started to become more conscious of our health and, and focused on how certain substances might not be as safe for us or as healthy for us as maybe we once thought about, “said Dr. Brown. Dr. Adam Barnathan, UPMC Addiction Medicine Specialist, says the benefits of participating are quite notable. “So, we do have medical data on the long-term effects of dry January. So, the benefits range from better sleep to weight loss to ongoing reduction even past one month extending out to six months. So, people who do participate tend to reduce their drinking long term, “said Dr. Barnathan. Dr. Brown suggests creating a goal when participating in dry January. “Once they set that intention, then they can certainly look at their lifestyle and then how can they follow through with that? So being very conscious of your goals and very specific with them is just one great way and great place to start, “said Dr. Brown. For those who drink alcohol excessively, it is important to reach out to a medical provider in case severe withdrawal take effect. “If you have what we call a diagnosable alcohol use disorder where you're at risk for detox or severe withdrawal effects, and that should be done under medical supervision. This is targeted more towards people who fall into the problematic or heavy drinking, which is a lot more people than you would believe. So, it's upwards of seven drinks per week for females and upwards of 14 drinks for males. And that's really who the target audience is, “said Dr. Barnathan. In today's episode, we have the privilege of hosting Melissa Brown, the founder of Safe Harbor Ohio, an organization dedicated to combating sex trafficking and providing support for survivors. Melissa's journey began with a powerful encounter at a conference where she witnessed the stark reality of child sex trafficking represented by white umbrellas being opened– each one symbolizing a child being sold that day in the city where the conference was held. Melissa sheds light on the dark and underground world of sex trafficking, emphasizing that it thrives in plain sight and preys on vulnerability. With Ohio ranking 5th in reported sex trafficking cases, Melissa stresses the urgency of addressing this issue. She discusses how predators exploit social media to target vulnerable individuals, highlighting the importance of awareness and vigilance. Through Safe Harbor Ohio, Melissa and her team are on a mission to renew, rebuild, and restore the lives of survivors. Their motto reflects their commitment to renewing faith, rebuilding lives, and restoring hope. Melissa shares the importance of recognizing survivors' intrinsic value and equipping them for long-term success. Melissa also educates listeners on the tactics used by traffickers, including grooming and false promises, and emphasizes the role of community members in combating trafficking through prayer, volunteering, and donations. She emphasizes that trauma can be passed from generation to generation, but so can healing. Join us as we delve into this crucial conversation with Melissa Brown, exploring how we can all play a part in combating sex trafficking and supporting survivors on their journey to healing and restoration. Bio: Melissa Brown is a wife and mother of two adult children. Her work history is working in management. With the leadership skills she used in managing eighteen stores, she carried those over to her role as the Senior Executive Director at a large multisite church. She has a proven history of exceeding goals and helping to get the best out of team that she works with. She has mentored two survivors and currently sits on the Stark County Juvenile Human Trafficking Task Force. She began to work alongside of those making an impact while also knowing the need is great and there is so much that needs to be done. Melissa lives by the belief that she has been placed on earth for such a time as this to help make an impact in this fight against evil. She knows that God has blessed her with a voice to speak up and fight for those who cannot speak for themselves. She fearlessly believes that God is who He says He is, and she faces life's giants with boldness and faith. Her desire is to do all things with a pure heart, and always speak the truth with love. She wants her legacy to not be about what she has done, but rather who she has served. A Humble Journey of Love: The Adoption of Little Joey In the realm of social work, Melissa Brown faces the complexities of life head-on, witnessing struggles that occasionally touch her heart. Yet, it's her servant's heart and unwavering faith in Jesus that serve as guiding lights, leading her to care for others through simple gestures — a conversation, a hug, or a prayer. A few years back, a unique opportunity knocked on Melissa and her husband Tom's door — a chance to care for a young Chinese boy bearing severe burns from an unfortunate accident. Seeking treatment in the United States, the boy needed more than medical attention; he needed a home and a family. Without hesitation, Melissa, Tom, and their three children welcomed Joey into their lives. Originally planned as a short visit, circumstances unfolded, extending Joey's stay amidst the global chaos of COVID. As Joey eventually returned to his parents in China, the need for ongoing medical care brought him back to the United States. Faced with the challenge of his living arrangements, Joey's biological parents turned to Melissa's family, not just for temporary care during treatments but to ask a profound question— would they officially adopt Joey? After heartfelt conversations within the family, not everyone initially favored the idea of adoption. With prayerful consideration, Melissa and Tom sensed a divine calling to embrace Joey into their family permanently, initiating the adoption process. Now, Melissa, Tom, and their expanded family of four children navigate the nuances of life together. It's not always a smooth path, but Melissa, with an unwavering trust in Jesus, believes that, over time, the hand of God will be evident through this remarkable journey. https://share.transistor.fm/s/08371417
