This week, I got to talk with Tori Eldridge about her newest novel Kaua'i Storm. Tori shares the inspiration for the book, how her settings matter so much to her, and how this book had her personally invested in nailing the culture.Kaua'i Storm SynopsisReturning to Kaua‘i, park ranger Makalani finds her family divided and their way of life at risk in this rich and emotional adventure by the bestselling author of the Lily Wong series. After ten years as a national park ranger in Oregon, Makalani Pahukula is back on Kaua‘i for her grandmother's birthday. Having been gone for so long, Makalani finds the disconnect with her people and her struggles have never been more profound. Neither has her need to reacquaint herself with everything she left behind. When she reaches the homestead, she finds a bickering family and the disconcerting news that her cousins—a failed college football player and a rebellious teenage girl—have gone missing.Makalani hopes they just ran off, too careless to realize the worry they've caused. But when hunters find a dead body in the Keālia Forest Reserve, Makalani fears something ominous is at play, and the search for her cousins grows more desperate. Although her help may not be welcomed by family and locals, Makalani is determined to solve a mystery that poses a greater risk than anyone imagines. The investigation will open her heart, reawaken her love for the land she calls home, and strengthen her bond with her family. Because no matter how long she's been away, for Makalani, Hawai‘i is in her blood. Ep.181 features Lily Wong, a figurative painter whose nuanced narratives invoke a sense of complex yearning and curiosity around the conditions that inscribe and complicate memory. Often engaged in acts of close looking and intimate contact, the subjects of her work move through dreamlike space and disoriented time. Wong's paintings probe at the way that literal and metaphorical fracturings influence the body's relationship to loss, intimacy, and desire. Their stories are never linear, but circular and eternal – a constant arrival and departure from the site of fracture. Her work has been exhibited at Lyles& King, New York (2023); Various Small Fires, Los Angeles (2022); Harper's, New York, NY (2021); Kapp Kapp, Philadelphia, PA (2021) and New York, NY(2020); Ramp Gallery, London, UK (2020); The Wunderwall, Antwerp, BE (2020);HVW8 Gallery, Berlin DE (2018); and Underdonk, Brooklyn, NY (2018). Wong currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. The best relationships start off as friendships. (7:24 完整英语的访谈|English Interview starts at 7:24)1.Start off 从什么开始Another question is I often heard when people are hanging out in a bar and then they see a foreigner and then they are also super excited and then chat them up and then they will come up with this question. It's like “Can I practice English with you?” So, generally speaking, now that's again, that's not a terrible question that maybe something that people are very receptive to. However, it's usually best to offer something rather than to ask for something. And this goes with anything relating to relationships or business or friendship. It's always best to give before you take. And even something as simple as just asking someone to help practice a language perceived as taking their time or just... you could be met with resistance. So a better option would be saying, hey, can I teach you Mandarin? Or can I help you? Would you like to learn some phrases in Mandarin? Or whatever language or whatever you're offering. Or would you like to learn how to cook Chinese food? Yes, so basically it switches from asking someone for something versus offering someone for something. And almost always, it's going to be, you're going to be the recipient of that as well. If you offer to teach them Mandarin, a few phrases in Mandarin, they're very likely going to be willing to ask you if you want to practice your English. Exactly, that's what I thought as well. I also like to offer, like showing my friend around… This is my goal to practice English with you. Exactly, and Lily Wong offers to show me around Taiwan and assists to practice all of her English. She's so sneaky.

Why did I pack my bags for a European rail trip? It all started one night in Shanghai in 2015 when I was listening to a talk given by a man who had travelled around Europe with a ukulele and visited five countries on the train in one month. When he talked about the people he had met, I dreamt that I too could have an adventure like this one day. Having lived in Spain for almost three years with an entrepreneur visa, I had become used to the convenience and low cost flight tickets easily available and had forgotten about my dream of travelling in Europe by train. It was when I finally decided to leave Spain that I realised just how many countries I hadn't visited! I didn't know when I would next come back to visit so this seemed like the perfect moment to buy a Eurail pass for two months. Starting from Spain, the countries which I originally planned to visit were France, Monaco, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Bosnia, Greece, and finally Italy. Poland, Bosnia and Greece did not happen, including because of winter train timetables however I did get to Sweden. This was my last adventure before leaving Europe in 2019 and I departed from Spain in November when the weather was getting colder. I used Couchsurfing to stay in strangers' places and get to know people in the cities I was visiting. In two months, I was in twelve countries across Europe. Originally it felt like a mission impossible, and I almost chickened out of it in the middle. The constant long distance travel was a huge test for my mind, body, and soul, however, I gritted my teeth and kept going in the face of challenges. Although the pandemic has been slowing down globally, in Taiwan the infection rate has gone up. At this time, I am living in a hillside village in Taiwan and this has given me the calmness and space to begin writing. I wrote the English version first and edited it with the assistance of my English teacher Oliver, before translating it into Chinese. So listeners, get yourself a drink of your choice, make yourself comfortable and buckle up because we're flying off on our European tour with Lily! Stay tuned...there's much more to come! In the next episode I'll be taking a closer look at reasons why I decided to leave the beautiful country of Spain and how I overcame the fear associated with this departure. FM https://reurl.cc/j5Kdz2

It can be easy to forget amongst the glistening skyscrapers, bustling streets and neon lights, but the Pearl River Delta used to be a haven for banditry and piracy. As the authority of Imperial China waned, pirate fleets based out of Guangdong Province roamed the waves, raiding traders and taking captives. One of these captives, and later pirates was Cheng Yat Sou—the “wife of Cheng Yat”—who rose from humble beginnings to eventually bring together the competing pirate fleets into a confederation. She is also the star of Larry Feign's first novel The Flower Boat Girl (Top Floor Books, 2021). Larry starts the story of the pirate queen from her abduction by Cheng Yat, and writes of how she gains a foothold among the pirate fleets. More information—and a sample chapter—can be found on the book's website. Larry and I talk about Cheng Yat Sou, early-nineteenth century China, and pirate fleets. We also talk about how Larry wrote the book, and what he learned from being one of Hong Kong's most prominent cartoonists. Larry Feign is an award-winning artist and writer based in Hong Kong. He is well known for his long-running daily political comic strip “Lily Wong”, which satirized life in Hong Kong before and after the handover to China until he retired the cartoon in 2007. Feign's work has appeared in Time, The Economist, the New York Times, The Atlantic, and other publications around the world. He also directed animated cartoons for Walt Disney Television and Cartoon Network. He is a MacDowell Fellow and three-time recipient of Amnesty International Human Rights Press Awards. This episode features three interviews with organizers and scholars concerned with Asian migrant sex work: SWAN Vancouver (Alison Clancey and Kelly Go), Dr. Lily Wong, and Dr. Yuri Doolan. On March 16, 2021, Robert Aaron Long targeted three Atlanta-area spas and massage parlors and killed eight people: Delania Ashley Yuan González, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Paul Andre Michels, Hyun Jung Grant, Soon Chung Park, Suncha Kim, and Yong Ae Yue. Six of these victims were Asian women. Within the days following the shooting, many groups representing women, Asian Americans, sex workers, and migrants, have collectively mourned and sent strength and solidarity to the eight victims and their families. This podcast episode seeks to express solidarity with these groups by highlighting the work of scholars and organizers who have been studying the racially encoded figures and the broader histories of Asian migrant sex work. We hope to give space here to understand how the violence that occurred on March 16 was imbricated within a racial capitalist structure that views Asian and Asian American women as disposable objects, a view that has been historically continuous with the histories of Chinese exclusion (initiated by fears of Chinese sex workers and yellow peril), and with over one hundred and fifty years of US imperialism in Asia, from the colonial theft of Hawai'i and the Philippine-American War to Japanese Incarceration, The Korean War, The Vietnam War, and the growth of over eight-hundred military bases across the world. As the organizers and scholars interviewed here stress, it is crucial now to join groups local and international that stand for the decriminalization of migration and sex work, and to reject calls for hate-crime laws or anti-sex trafficking laws, or any legislation that would bring more policing, all of which would only make migrants and sex workers more vulnerable and stigmatized. Christopher B. Patterson is an Assistant Professor in the Social Justice Institute at the University of British Columbia.

Ep. 248: Tori Eldridge is a Honolulu-born writer who challenges perspective and empowers the spirit. Her debut novel, The Ninja Daughter, is the first book in the Lily Wong series and was inspired by her debut short story featured in Suspense Magazine’s Best of 2014. Other short stories have been published in several anthologies, and her screenplay The Gift earned a semi-finalist place for the prestigious Academy Nicholl Fellowship. Tori is of Hawaiian, Chinese, Norwegian descent and graduated from Punahou School with classmate Barack Obama. She holds a fifth-degree black belt in To-Shin Do Ninjutsu and has traveled the USA teaching seminars on the ninja arts, weapons, and women’s self-protection. Tori has performed under her maiden name (Tori Brenno) as an actress, singer, dancer on Broadway, television, and film. The cultural diversity in Tori’s upcoming novel, The Ninja Daughter, stems from her own multi-cultural heritage—a Norwegian father from North Dakota and a Chinese-Hawaiian mother from Maui who met, married, and raised Tori’s sisters in Japan. This unusual family melting pot, combined with the amalgamation of Asian-Pacific Islander traditions that make up modern Hawaiian culture, gives Tori a unique perception, deep fascination, and an inclusive appreciation for world culture. Lily Wong‘s Transpacific Attachments: Sex Work, Media Networks, and Affective Histories of Chineseness (Columbia University Press, 2018) traces the genealogy of the Chinese sex worker as a figure who manifests throughout the 20th century in moments of anti-Asian racism as well as moments of sexism and nationalism within Chinese communities. Yet for Wong, the tensions and visibility of this figure also allows alternative and alternating forms of solidarity rooted in stepping back from ideologies of nation, race and gender. The sex worker thus allows us to see Chineseness and other forms of collectivity as an affective product, an attachment that mobilizes our emotions and frames how we see others as well as ourselves. By charting representations of the Chinese sex worker through histories of Pacific Crossing, Cold War era ideologies, and contemporary globalization, Wong's book shows the multiple ways that sex work and prostitution have unsettled forms of collectivity, while providing new spaces for dwelling. Christopher B. Patterson teaches at the University of British Columbia, Social Justice Institute. He is the author of Transitive Cultures: Anglophone Literature of the Transpacific and Stamped: an anti-travel novel.

I find [I can be] very negative or very anxious. I was constantly looking for a place to stay and when people tell me, oh sorry, Lilly you can't stay here anymore because my parents are coming to visit, you need to find your own place. That message makes me feel very anxious; makes me feel not loved. I think mindfulness makes me feel like I can recognize these messages. They can be a trigger to my past. I can work on that next time when I hear the same thing. How do I transfer; how do I make it different? Thoughts on Breathing Breathing - I haven't thought about that. Especially breathing during meditation where they ask me to notice my breathing. I also like to practice yoga as well. I notice that I kind of held my breath when I practice yoga. Then I ask myself to breathe more; to enjoy the air when it's morning. Breathing is kind of like a tool to help you to live in the moment. Suggested Resources Book: You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay App: N/A Bullying Story When I was a teenager I was at the lowest point in my life because I was so focused on myself and I constantly liked to beat myself up. I wanted to; I liked to beat myself up. Then I wrote a lot of suicidal messages in my journal. I felt I was in the dark. I felt really good to beat myself up. When I was a student I got all straight A's and I worked really hard but deep inside I was not happy. Several people liked to pick on me. They called me names and they tried to hit me. They wanted to do stuff to me and I was scared but I also found myself fearless at some points because I was already beating myself up. What worse could happen? It was that mindset that helped me avoid physical abuse. After a few years, I learned that people who bully people; they are actually the biggest bullies to themselves. They say mean stuff to others in order to make them feel good. In my head, I was judging people and I was judging myself too. I'm much better now; I don't judge people so much. I can really tell whether my message is from my ego or my intuition or from love. If you've experienced a bullying in your life, I want you to hug those bullies in your heart. Try to be nice to those bullies in your heart. Try to see them as your family in your heart.

I'm the founder and director of Shanghai Greeters. I'm in charge of the recruitment of volunteers and training. The topic for my presentation today is how to make friends with foreigners. The reason why I'm doing this topic is I'd like to use my knowledge and my experience to help bridge the gap between two different cultures. First I'd like to give a brief introduction of my organisation: Shanghai Greeters. Second, I'd like to share some appropriate small talk topics when talking with your foreign friends; Third, I'll share the things you should avoid when hanging out with foreigners. Fourth, I'd like to invite two friends of mine, Adi and Kelly, to come up and share their funny experiences in a foreign country. Finally, I'll leave some time for Q and A. My presentation will last about 30 minutes and I hope you all have my handout. If you don't have the handout with you, it's fine. I also have made a powerpoint template to assist my talk. Ok, lets get started. Shanghai Greeters was founded in 2013….
