Pro Football in the 1970s is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Your Favorite Sport's Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARY The featured halfback for the Los Angeles Rams in 1975 was Lawrence McCutcheon, a runner who delivered the unabashed punch of a fullback, with the speed and the shifty moves of a quality halfback. During the regular season that year, McCutcheon had rushed for a total of 911 yards, which was a regression from the 1,097 yards that he gained in 1973, and the 1,109 yards that he gained in 1974. Despite his falling short of the 1,000-yard plateau in 1975, the Rams still managed to win the NFC Western Division title with an impressive 12-2 record. Los Angeles head coach Chuck Knox had to rely mostly on McCutcheon in the first round of the 1975 divisional playoffs. This was due primarily because Knox's quarterback situation still had not been resolved. Knox vacillated between James Harris and Ron Jaworski to be his starting signal caller, especially as the 1975 regular season neared its end.Read the entire episode blog post and check out some other cool info regarding this episode here.PRO FOOTBALL IN THE 1970S BACKGROUNDPro Football in the 1970s is a podcast dedicated to teaching fans about the history of the NFL during the 1970s, a time when the host (Joe Zagorski) grew up as a rabid fan of the game. Some fans believe Paul Moyer belongs in the top 10 of the toughest Seahawks of all time. There is one story in this week's Silvi Knows Podcast that will back that up (35:00). Moyer played seven seasons in Seattle, after signing as an undrafted safety out of Arizona State. He played with some of the biggest names in franchise history and remembers his rookie days learning from Hall of Famer Kenny Easley and Ring of Honor member Dave Brown (16:00). Moyer followed up his playing career with five years on the Seahawks coaching staff working for the great Chuck Knox, who back in the day was adamant about not spending a high draft pick on a certain quarterback. Turns out Chuck was right (27:00). Moyer shares stories of his playing days and his coaching days, including one long season on the staff of the worst team in Seahawks history (41:00).There are humorous stories, like the months Moyer spent studying VHS tapes to learn how to beat teammate Dave Krieg in billiards (20:00) or winning money during the Dash For Cash days, implemented by longtime Seahawks assistant Rusty Tillman (45:00). Moyer continues to lend his insight to radio broadcasts on Seahawks game days, proving 36 years after signing his first contract with the Seahawks, he still bleeds blue and green.
Dave Krieg spent 12 of his 19 NFL seasons with the Seahawks and earned a spot in the team's Ring of Honor. Should Dave Krieg be in the Hall of Fame (33:40)? He answers that question and more in this week's episode of Silvi Knows podcast. His love of football began with a Green Bay Packers uniform when he was five years old (6:03). The passion he developed for the sport led to an improbable football career that gained traction at a now-closed Milton College.Krieg talks of his first NFL start, an upset win over the Jets and the New York Sack Exchange (9:29). Krieg played for six teams, calling the 1994 Lions the best team he ever played for (17:13), but the greatest win he ever had as a Seahawk was in Kansas City, despite getting sacked seven times by Derrick Thomas (22:43). After that game, head coach Chuck Knox did something Krieg will never forget (24:00). Krieg vividly remembers getting to within one win of the Super Bowl and losing to a Raiders organization he learned to hate (28:10).

Nesby Glasgow, former Seattle Seahawks safety from 1988 to 1992 returns to the show and talks about his 14 year NFL career that came after a college career with the Washington Huskies and ended back in Seattle. As a 14 year NFL veteran who played until he was 35, we talk about the surprise of the offseason that Doug Baldwin is leaving the game at a relatively young age. We start the show by talking about his experience with the NFL draft and how an injury in the Senior Bowl dropped him down into the 8th round of the 1979 NFL Draft. With college players opting not to play in certain games leading up to the draft, Glasgow offers his perspective on the particular game he would be sure not to miss out on. Glasgow played for former Seahawks head coach Chuck Knox, who passed away last offseason, and he talks about how Knox was the greatest coach he played for and shares a story about how Coach Knox decided to celebrate after one of the team's big wins. He also shares a story about how the team got in the head of Bo Jackson in the final game of the 1988 season that earned the team its first AFC West Division title. Seattle went on to lose to the Bengals in the playoffs who represented the AFC in the Super Bowl that year against Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers. Concussions in the NFL continue to be a concern, and a particular concern to Glasgow who is now 62 years old, he says some recent changes to the offseason could actually be detrimental to current NFL players. As we reach a middle point of the offseason, Glasgow talked about his preparation and how he feels it set him apart from others in the NFL. In this episode, Henry sits down with former NFL player and first round draft pick Phil Olsen, currently President of Know Your Strengths, a human resource consulting firm that guides clients and executive-level management through processes for talent discovery, training and people management. Phil helps us see how hiring people who are clones of ourselves leaves our organizations open for execution issues and why learning to appreciate and collaborate with those who are just wired differently from us actually builds a stronger organization. He takes a lot of queues from the sports arena and shares a great deal on his learnings from Coaches John Wooden of UCLA fame and Chuck Knox of the Buffalo Bills and L.A. Rams. God’s treasure is people. Knowing how to be the best stewards of them is the fastest way of ensuring you give Him pleasure in how you do what you do within your organizations. Share with us some of the ways you are fulfilling the responsibility of stewarding people in a manner that gives Him glory at faithdrivenentrepreneur.org. We also have a very brief survey we’d love for you to take that will help us shape the direction and future of the FDE podcast. . As always, we love taking your questions and hearing your comments. We start off the show with some sad news this week after Chuck Knox passed away at the age of 86. Seahawks fans also got some closure on Cliff Avril's injury as he was waived from the team. But the positive news was that he'd be sticking around and joining a local radio station. The Seahawks are back! Back to being the underdogs we've known prior to their Super Bowl victory. Adam and Brandan talk about why that is while going into some of the questions that we have about the 2018 season. Among those questions has to do with the offensive line and a recent Field Gulls article has Adam musing if Mike Solari is the coaching version of Jay Cutler. In other news, after retiring from coaching, Bruce Arians may now be more of a part of our lives as Seahawks fans than he was by coaching in the division. Earl Thomas is still in the news and we expect that he is probably not going to get an extension before the season. But he is going to be a member of the Seahawks this year - so stop it with the Cowboys talk! And speaking of the things that are silly to talk about, Russell Wilson expecting a franchise tag in 2020 is another one of them. But when Pete Carroll is throwing around glowing praise for their new 7th round quarterback, maybe his agent wants to try and cash in on a new contract right now. What can't Alex McGough do? We go over some of the news and quotes from Pete Carroll from rookie minicamp and we bring you some exclusive audio that will have you hyped up for one of this year's draft picks Michael-Shawn Dugan, @MikeDugar on Twitter, joins the show to talk about what he saw at rookie minicamp. Dugar, formerly of the Seattle PI, is now a writer for The Athletic. His latest article discusses the Seahawks receiving corps and we talk about his roster breakdown and talk about if the Seahawks make a mistake by not drafting a receiver. Or should they count on the guys they brought in from recent years? The dishooplafication of the Seahawks Roster continues and this time they make a sensible decision when it comes to having a tight end with the proper number of Ls in his name. We talk about the latest Supreme Court ruling and the expectation that it will lead to more gambling on NFL games. The guys talk about several issues around that before closing out with a Do Better for some crazy shifts in the media narrative toward the Seahawks based on people they visit with and to the Denver airport for inadequate signage. Better at life honors close the show for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and a company that is bringing space age technology to one of Adam's favorite past times. Coaching is an art. Like all forms of art there are people who dabble, have some success and then there are the GREATS! What makes a coach great? There are commonalities between all great coaches and this episode is all about those qualities! Every great coach has a set of rules, philosophies, tenants, or pillars that their coaching techniques are based on. This foundation cannot be moved, cracked or broken. Games are won, games are lost, players come and go but these fundamental coaching pillars remain intact! The greats also attack the sport with passion, motivation and clear intent. There are a lot of coaches who know their stuff but the greats have a way of delivering the message at the right time, with the right intensity for the right person in a clear, concise message and easily digestible cues. Some were great athletes in their youth and learnt how to impart their greatness in others by sharing the path that they travelled to accomplish their own success. Others can’t so they teach! There are great coaches that have come from both camps. Listen and leave a message below with your favourite coaches or if you are willing….. share your pillars, coaching philosophies with your fellow #Glisteners. Ill get you started….. My favourite coach of all time is Chuck Knox. What? Listen and learn! @performbetter @mytpi #CoachGlassNextLevel #DreamBig #OverDeliver #BeUndeniable Coach Glass
The Seahawks get a 17-7 win over the 49ers to hand them their first 3-game losing streak of the Harbaugh era and officially eliminate San Francisco from playoff contention. The guys talk about some of the unusual things that happened during the game that Seahawks fans aren't used to seeing with this team. Seattle's defense continues to be a topic of discussion as Jordan Hill has been a pleasant surprise and Bobby Wagner just seems to get better every week. The Seahawks go on the road to face another great defense, but can the Cardinals find a way to win with a quarterback who has one career win and no career touchdowns? This week the Sea Hawkers Podcast brings on a pair of our favorite Seahawks historians in Ramona Peel and Mark Tye Turner. Ramona, blogger on Dave Krieg's Strike Beard, compares the 49ers downfall to the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War while Mark talks about how this Seattle defense is the best since the 80s era defense coach by Chuck Knox. Both talk about their reactions to the win over the 49ers and Ramona talks about how it just wouldn't be the same without Jim Harbaugh on the sideline and mentions the fluid nature of Seahawks rivals since joining the NFC West, while it wasn't always the case in the AFC. The Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals are two teams on target for "Do Better" this week and Adam calls out a listener and the Buffalo Bills for "Better at Life" while Brandan shares his appreciation for a Seahawks offensive tandem.
