Detroit, Michigan native Ryan Reed is the founder of Women's Basketball League (WBL) which has 6 teams starting up in their inaugural season, Chicago Flames, Cleveland Rockers, Detroit Shock, Toronto North Stars, Grand Rapids Soul, Indiana Thunder. Recently Ryan, was informed that he was the first Black man to form an all-women's sports league. While this fact blew my mind, his goal was simple: to provide women with opportunities to advance their careers. The year was a momentous one for women in sports as it marked the 35th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program that receives federal funding. More than 25,000 people visited Cleveland during the 2007 Women's Final Four, bringing $10.7 million to the region. Bio: Rushia Brown, the South Carolina native, has made the world her home. As a professional athlete, Rushia played 17 seasons of basketball in 6 different countries. Furman University and Southern Conference Hall of Fame was one of the original pioneers in the WNBA, which started in 1997. She spent 6 years with the Cleveland Rockers and her final year with the Charlotte Sting. Her international career spanned ten seasons in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Korea. After retiring, Brown earned her Executive MBA from George Washington University. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to be a part of starting several companies, including the Women's Professional Basketball Alumnae, the only organization to assist women who have played professionally in the WNBA or Internationally to transition; ServCom, a non-profit organization that provides programming that cultivates personal productivity and profitability through preparedness; Hearts & Hands Catering, a family business offering healthy soul food alternatives; and Young Black Entrepreneur Magazine, a quarterly publication that serves as an educational platform encouraging minorities to start their own businesses. Brown has made her mark in various business sectors and continues to travel the world, inspiring others to use their gifts and talents to pursue their dreams. After a stint in New York at the NBA League office, Rushia served in the front office of the Las Vegas Aces as Player Programs and Franchise Development Manager and later served as Director of Community Relations and Youth Sports for the LA Sparks until Feb of 22. She is the proud mother of Morgan MacKenzie Brown. Rushia's journey Rushia was born in the Bronx, New York, and her family later moved to South Carolina. Her father was diagnosed with cancer when he was a high school freshman. He meant a lot to their family, and Rushia wanted to help him, but she did not know how. When he eventually passed away, she felt like she had lost everything and became a problem child. Fortunately, the people around her encouraged her to make healthier decisions.   Basketball Rushia picked up a basketball for the first time when she was in the tenth grade. She fell in love with the game and found that playing sports was a way to reconnect with her father because he had been an avid sports fan. The more she played and the harder she worked, the better she got, and the cycle of improvement and reaching different goals stuck with her, so she kept on playing. College Rushia wanted to go to college and knew that sports was the only way for her to get there. She became the number two recruit in the entire state of South Carolina, so she could pick any school to which she wanted to go. She initially committed to going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill but later decided to stay closer to home and went to Furman University in South Carolina. She had a fantastic career there, got a degree in sociology, and won every basketball award. An offer to play professionally In her senior year, her basketball coach got a call from an agent who wanted to see her play internationally. Rushia was made an offer she could not refuse, so she took the chance and played internationally for ten seasons. WNBA Three years into her international career, the WNBA started. Rushia wanted to have the opportunity to play in that league. Even though she was not selected straight away, she got picked eventually because her international team was doing so well. Open trials In their first year, the WNBA allowed franchises in eight cities to host open trials. Rushia went to the closest team in Charlotte, North Carolina, where 200 women were trying out. She made it to the final four and got cut! She was heartbroken, but her no-nonsense mom encouraged her to find a way to get in front of the right people to get an opportunity. Cleveland The following weekend, she drove to Cleveland to try again. She made it to the final four again, and the head coach invited her to be part of their practice team. That meant she would be a practice player only, and when the games came, she would sit in the stands and would not travel with the team. Having a foot in the door was enough for her, and she knew her hard work would eventually get her into the team, so she accepted. Part of the team  Three-and-a-half weeks later the coach invited her to be part of the regular roster. Seven games into the season, the coach told her that she would start her in the game they were playing the following week. She ended up playing as a starter for the rest of her seven-year career in the WNBA.  Retiring Rushia retired from the WNBA in 2003, at the age of 31, and started doing the things she loved.  ServCom She eventually started a basketball academy because she wanted to work with kids. That led to her starting a non-profit, ServCom, dedicated to providing resources for those who want to do better and be better. MBA Everyone referred to Rushia as the “Rushia the basketball player” and minimized who she was as a woman and a professional. So she thought that educating herself more would bring more opportunities her way and did an MBA at George Washington University. The Women's Professional Basketball Alumni Association When Rushia did not know what she wanted to do, she planned celebrity games and hosted events. A former player was at one of the celebrity events. She had been a 2x WNBA All-Star and played the league for seven or eight years internationally. On that trip, Rushia discovered that she was homeless, so she wanted to figure out a way to help women in those situations. That was her initial motivation to start the WPBA. The Young Black Entrepreneur Rushia and her brother started Young Black Entrepreneur Magazine as an educational platform to influence and encourage people of color to start businesses and educate them on the process. They also do a mentorship program for kids called The Wolf Pack. Boss Girls Rushia loves helping others! She created Boss Girls at the beginning of Covid to help people because she discovered that in helping people, her spirit also did well. Writing a book Rushia plans to finish writing the book she has been working on for the last ten years. Dan Hughes retired yesterday from the Seattle Storm. He has had a great career coaching and is now going to focus on the USA Women's Basketball Team. This was one of my favorite episodes when it first aired and so I wanted to release it again with the news of his retirement. Today's guest is Jen Rizzotti. Jen is entering her third season as the head coach of the George Washington women's basketball team. Jen guided the Colonials back to the NCAA Tournament in her second season at the helm in 2017-18 after leading the program to the Atlantic 10 Championship.  Rizzotti was named the 10th head coach of GW women's basketball on April 15, 2016. Coach Rizzotti spent the previous 17 seasons as the head coach of the Hartford Hawks, where she built a conference powerhouse in taking the Hawks to all six NCAA appearances in program history, winning a pair of NCAA Tournament games, and distinguishing herself as the all-time winningest coach in America East history. Inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013, Rizzotti is well-known in basketball circles around the world. After taking control of a Hartford program that went 8-19 in the year before she was hired and that had never won more than 15 games prior to her arrival, the Hawks enjoyed 11 seasons with more than 15 victories in her tenure and won at least 20 games seven times. Following the 2009-10 regular season, Rizzotti was named a finalist for the Kay Yow National Coach of the Year award after leading Hartford to a school-record 20-game winning streak, a perfect 16-0 record in conference play and the program's first-ever national ranking. Rizzotti is also deeply connected to international basketball through her involvement with the USA Women's Basketball national program. She served as head coach of 2010 FIBA Americas U18 gold medal winners as well as the 2011 U19 World Champions. In 2011 she was crowned as the USA Basketball National Coach of the Year. More recently Rizzotti served as an assistant for the 2014 FIBA World Championships and served in a support role for the USA Basketball Women's National Team's Gold Medal run at the 2016 Olympic Games. As a student-athlete at the University of Connecticut, Rizzotti first vaulted into the national spotlight as the starting point guard for the Huskies' first national championship team in 1995 with an undefeated 35-0 record. During the run to the national title, Rizzotti was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. A former All-American and the NCAA Regional Most Outstanding Player after her junior and senior seasons, in 1996 Rizzotti virtually swept the postseason awards as Big East Player of the Year, Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Associated Press Player of the Year, the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the Wade Trophy winner. Rizzotti graduated as UConn's career leader in assists (637) and steals (349) and still ranks second all-time in those categories. As a coach and formerly as a student-athlete, Rizzotti's focus on academics has always been exemplary. Under her guidance, Hartford was ranked among the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 teams on three occasions. Another accolade from her playing days was awarded in June 2016 when the two-time Academic All-American and 1996 Academic All-American of the Year was officially inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Hall of Fame. Rizzotti played eight seasons of professional basketball following her graduation from UConn in 1996. In addition to five seasons in the WNBA - two with the Houston Comets and three with the Cleveland Rockers - she competed for three seasons with the New England Blizzard in the American Basketball League. For 39 years Joe Tait was known as one of the best PxP voices in the NBA.  But he was more than that.  Tait may be best know for his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he also spent much of his career doubling with the Cleveland Indians and spent significant time with the Cleveland Rockers of the WNBA.  In an hour conversation Tait discusses the hallmarks of his craft and how he approached it, how to tell stories, how he prepped and much more.

The news came this week that the Seattle Storm, building around the young core of Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd alongside icon Sue Bird, had hired an old hand at the WNBA coaching business to lead them: Dan Hughes. For Hughes, whose epic career dates back to the earliest days of the league, it was an opportunity to overcome the disappointment he felt when the WNBA lottery balls favored Seattle over San Antonio, where he was the coach and general manager at the time. Hughes counts working with Moriah Jefferson as a career highlight along with such accomplishments as taking San Antonio to the WNBA Finals and turning the Cleveland Rockers into the league's elite teams, but the chance to coach Stewart feels like something else altogether. Hughes discussed an array of topics during this podcast, from whatever happened to his former assistant coach in Cleveland, one Cheryl Reeve, to the offensive and defensive goals he has for a Seattle team he says can be among the league's best, but will need to prove it.
