Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. What is a realistic ceiling for the Steelers with QB Aaron Rodgers, should they sign him via NFL free agency after his visit to the team facility Friday? Could his take weapons including DK Metcalf and George Pickens to a playoff win? Or more? What is the worst-case scenario with Rodgers for coach Mike Tomlin, GM Omar Khan and the team's top brass? Could Tomlin suffer his first losing season if Rodgers shows his age? Paul tackles those topics, then reacts to Robert Morris putting a scare into Alabama in the NCAA Tournament. How proud should the Colonials be of their season after winning the Horizon League for the first time and returning to March Madness for the first time since 2015?

PREVIEW: OHIO RIVER VALLEY: 18TH CENTURY: COLONIALS: NATIVES: Conversation with Professor Robert Kagan, his new book, AMERICAN HEART OF DARKNESS, re the shocking cruelty and violence of the frontier as the colonists pushed the tribes more and more west before and after the Revolution. This is part of a two hour conversation, last Friday and this. More tonight. 1700 Heart of American Darkness: Bewilderment and Horror on the Early Frontier Hardcover – May 28, 2024 by  Robert G. Parkinson  (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Heart-American-Darkness-Bewilderment-Frontier/dp/1324091770 We are divided over the history of the United States, and one of the central dividing lines is the frontier. Was it a site of heroism? Or was it where the full force of an all-powerful empire was brought to bear on Native peoples? In this startingly original work, historian Robert Parkinson presents a new account of ever-shifting encounters between white colonists and Native Americans. Drawing skillfully on Joseph Conrad's famous novella, Heart of Darkness, he demonstrates that imperialism in North America was neither heroic nor a perfectly planned conquest. It was, rather, as bewildering, violent, and haphazard as the European colonization of Africa, which Conrad knew firsthand and fictionalized in his masterwork. At the center of Parkinson's story are two families whose entwined histories ended in tragedy. The family of Shickellamy, one of the most renowned Indigenous leaders of the eighteenth century, were Iroquois diplomats laboring to create a world where settlers and Native people could coexist. The Cresaps were frontiersmen who became famous throughout the colonies for their bravado, scheming, and land greed. Together, the families helped determine the fate of the British and French empires, which were battling for control of the Ohio River Valley. From the Seven Years' War to the protests over the Stamp Act to the start of the Revolutionary War, Parkinson recounts the major turning points of the era from a vantage that allows us to see them anew, and to perceive how bewildering they were to people at the time. For the Shickellamy family, it all came to an end on April 30, 1774, when most of the clan were brutally murdered by white settlers associated with the Cresaps at a place called Yellow Creek. That horrific event became news all over the continent, and it led to war in the interior, at the very moment the First Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Michael Cresap, at first blamed for the massacre at Yellow Creek, would be transformed by the Revolution into a hero alongside George Washington. In death, he helped cement the pioneer myth at the heart of the new republic. Parkinson argues that American history is, in fact, tied to the frontier, just not in the ways we are often told. Altering our understanding of the past, he also shows what this new understanding should mean for us today. 42 illustrations

Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

On February 22, 1770, eleven year old Christopher Seider was killed in the streets of Boston. He is generally considered by historians to be the first person to die in the American Revolution. The British Taxes imposed in 1767 under the Townsend Acts led a firestorm of Colonial protests, particularly – and to no one's surprise – in Boston. The Colonials had boycotted British imports since the implementation of the Acts, but it mean that Boston (and other) merchants were struggling to make any profit at all selling American made goods of rougher and lesser quality. In early 1770, one Boston merchant, Theophilus Lille, announced – very publically – that he had had enough and was breaking the boycott and would sell British goods. The resulting riot ended with the death of Seider, who would draw his final breath in the surgery of Dr. Joseph Warren. Two weeks later, snowballs hurled by angry Colonials would lead to shots being fire and the next five Americans will fall in the Revolution. Dr. Joseph Warren, born June 11, 1741, saw that much more was now at stake than a mere political disagreement, would become a vocal advocate for the ideas of the growing American Revolution. And he would become one of the first of the fallen… --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/plausibly-live/message

In Part 2 of Episode 30, I'm joined by two of the best Oil Creek Region athletes of all-time, Steve Shingledecker and Eric Johnson. Steve Shingledecker, who hails from Franklin, Pennsylvania, serves as the Head Coach of the Men's Golf Team at Robert Morris. Returning to coach RMU after successful tenures as Director of Golf Operations at the Turn Club in Cranberry Township and Director of Golf at Nemacolin Woodlands, Shingledecker did a great job leading the team this year. Their impressive performance includes a 3rd place finish at the Carpetbagger Classic in Frederick, Maryland, a feat coincidentally following Steve's last appearance on the show. I'm just sayin'. Steve is a great coach and PGA Professional and an even better guy. In our conversation, Steve sheds light on the Colonials' season progression and the departure of key graduating players. Additionally, we delve into strategies for rebounding from a challenging hole and the benefits of encouraging children to explore multiple sports rather than specializing early. Eric Johnson is a Golf Digest Top 100 Instructor. You can find him teaching each summer at Yellowstone Golf Club in Big Sky, Montana, one of the premier private courses in the country. Eric was the Director of Instruction at Oakmont for 17 years and then for a couple at Nemacolin. Eric was fresh off playing a round at Oakmont, with Pittsburgh Brewing Company Owner Cliff Forrest. We hear about the changes they've made at Oakmont in preparation for hosting the US Open in 2025. Eric also shares his thoughts on the PGA Championship, Tiger Woods' play, and the exceptional features of Yellowstone Country Club. Eric is one of my all-time favorites and when you listen to this segment you'll understand why.

How to Reinvigorate America's Youth

America is a golden land of opportunity. Yet many of the country's young people don't see it that way. They believe the American dream is unattainable and that America is a racist and bigoted place full of evil oppressors.Ian Rowe, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and author of the new book "Agency," wants to change that narrative and prove to America's youth that there is something worth striving for."I want young people to know that they can do hard things," Rowe explains. "That they live in a good, if not great, country. That, with the right ingredients, they can lead a life of their own choosing."Rowe thinks there's two factors responsible for American youth: a "blame the system" narrative and a "blame the victim" narrative."In the 'blame the system' narrative, if you are not achieving the American dream, the reason is America itself. That America itself is this oppressive nation. That based on superficial characteristics like gender or race, you're oppressed," says Rowe. The other philosophy blames the individual themselves."It's your fault. It's some pathology that you have. You didn't pull yourself up by your own bootstraps," says Rowe. "But if a young person hasn't had the right kind of nurturing from a strong family, strong faith-based organization, strong educational opportunity, then it's very difficult for them independently to overcome these hurdles."Rowe joins the show to discuss his new book and how we can inspire young people to succeed. We also cover these stories:President Joe Biden threatens to use emergency powers if oil companies don't boost supplies amidst growing gas prices.Mayra Flores wins a special election in Texas, marking the first time a Republican will represent the Rio Grande Valley since 1871.George Washington University retires its century-old Colonials moniker over outcry from student activists.
