Today is the 10th anniversary of the standoff at Bundy Ranch. It was likely the most significant act of American armed civil disobedience in 160 years. And no one at the time could have predicted how it would end up. I don't expect everyone to agree with my conclusions but I'm weighing in on the matter from a position of mild authority as an eye witness to much of what took place leading up to the event and what followed. Here is a column I wrote in April 2014 for St. George News about The Bundys vs. the Bureaucracy. This was a column about a visit I made to Bundy Ranch two days before the standoff. Here's my account of my time at Bundy Ranch on the day of the standoff. The initial trials of those who were at Bunkerville in 2014 were a mockery of the concept of justice. I had the privilege of attending and reporting from the trial of Cliven, Ammon and Ryan Bundy and Ryan Payne in late 2017. Once the federal government's false narrative began to unravel, the judge had no choice but to declare a mistrial. Here is my column of what happened in the courtroom the day the case against the Bundys was dismissed with prejudice. And a recap of looking back on Bundy Ranch 4 years after that fateful day. Embark on a historical journey with Shiloh Logan, a PhD student with a keen eye for the interwoven threads of religion and politics. This conversation pulls back the curtain on Ezra Taft Benson's formidable legacy within the LDS Church and American conservatism. As we navigate the corridors of the past, Shiloh illuminates the philosophies that fueled the controversial Cliven and Amon Bundy, and how Benson's teachings continue to resonate within the LDS community and beyond, challenging modern perceptions of government and individual liberties. The episode traverses the complex terrain of the LDS Church's engagement with American culture, from the historical perspectives of Brigham Young to the delicate dance of modern leaders wrestling with Benson's political echoes. Discover how religious convictions are deeply entangled with the political ideologies of church members, and the balancing act the church endures in aligning evolving doctrines on race and inclusivity with the staunch conservatism of some of its followers. Shiloh's insights provide a rich backdrop for understanding the internal dynamics and external perceptions that the LDS Church contends with in contemporary society.Concluding our exploration, we shed light on the broader implications of the LDS Church's intricate relationship with American identity. This episode is a mosaic of religious history, legal debates, and the shaping of American society through the lens of a minority faith. As Shiloh guides us through these narratives, we're left with a deeper appreciation for the complex ways religion and politics have interplayed in the American story, and how they continue to evolve and redefine the nation's character. Join us as we unravel the enduring impact of Mormonism on the fabric of American life and thought. Support the showCrew:Host: C. This is a segment of episode #250 of Last Born In The Wilderness “God's Country: The Faith & Fate Of Land Use In The American West w/ Betsy Gaines Quammen.” Listen to the full episode: https://bit.ly/LBWquammen Learn more about and purchase Betsy’s book ‘American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God and Public Lands in the West’: https://bit.ly/3gAJfYO Historian and conservationist Betsy Gaines Quammen examines the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and how the theological underpinnings of this religious organization has played an important and instrumental role in the settler-colonialist expansion in the American West since the followers of this faith settled in the region over a century ago. This is especially relevant when we examine how these historical processes have led to the present day crises of land use in the region — conflicts between the federal government (e.g. the Bureau of Land Management) and the political extremism of various cattle ranchers and the militia movement, particularly the Bundy family (Cliven and his son Ammon). The Bundy's numerous high-profile confrontations with federal authorities in recent years have been at the forefront of the "wise use" movement, a "loose-knit coalition of groups promoting the expansion of private property rights and reduction of government regulation of publicly held property." (https://bit.ly/3djbaub) These confrontations came to a head in 2014, with Cliven Bundy leading an armed confrontation with the BLM regarding a 21-year legal dispute involving grazing fees on public land in southeastern Nevada, and in 2016 with Ammon Bundy leading the armed occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, Oregon, lasting well over a month. Betsy reveals the longstanding relationship far-right militias have had with the Bundy’s and their ongoing conflict with public land management in the western United States, and how the theology of the LDS church has informed their relationship with the land in the region. With these high-profile armed confrontations in mind, I ask Betsy to point to where this ultimately will lead — environmentally, politically, and socially.  Betsy Gaines Quammen received a doctorate in Environmental History from Montana State University in 2017, her dissertation focusing on Mormon settlement and public land conflicts. She has studied various religious traditions over the years, with particular attention to how cultures view landscape and wildlife. The rural American west, pastoral communities of northern Mongolia, and the grasslands of East Africa have been her main areas of interest. After college in Colorado, caretaking for a bed and breakfast in Mosier, Oregon, and serving breakfasts at a café in Kanab, Utah, Betsy has settled in Bozeman, Montana, where she now lives with her husband, writer David Quammen. My guest is John Temple. His newest book is Up in Arms: How the Bundy Family Hijacked Public Lands, Outfoxed the Federal Government, and Ignited America’s Patriot Militia Movement. (https://www.amazon.com/Up-Arms-Hijacked-Outfoxed-Government/dp/1946885959) Up in Arms chronicles how an isolated clan of desert-dwelling Mormons became the guiding light—and then the outright leaders—of America’s Patriot movement. The nation was riveted in 2014 when hundreds of Bundy supporters, many of them armed, forced federal agents to abandon a court-ordered cattle roundup. Then in 2016, Ammon Bundy, one of Cliven’s 13 children, led a 41-day armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. Those events and the subsequent shootings, arrests, and trials captured headlines, but they’re just part of a story that has never been fully told. John Temple, award-winning journalist and author of American Pain, gives readers an unprecedented and objective look at the real people and families at the heart of these highly publicized standoffs. Up in Arms offers a propulsive narrative populated by rifle-toting cowboys, apocalyptic militiamen, undercover infiltrators, and the devout and charismatic Bundys themselves. Neither mainstream nor conservative media outlets have contextualized the religious, political, environmental, and economic factors that set the stage for these events. Up in Arms provides a framework for understanding this diverse collection of American rebels who believe government overreach justifies the taking up of arms. Special Guest: John Temple.

Hello Renegade Nation.  This show concerns the ongoing saga of the ongoing Battle of Bunkerville in 2014.  The Bundy’s and their co-defendants have been languishing in prison while awaiting their various trials.  These defendants have not been granted their due process of the pre-trial granting of bail to await their trials and have been imprisoned now for close to two years.  They have not been convicted of anything, nor did they harm anyone or any property, they just took a righteous stand against the abuses they suffered from the federal Bureau of Land Management Agency after two decades of seeking address and remedy at the county, state and federal levels to no avail.  Cliven, Ammon and Ryan Bundy, as well as the other defendants in the Nevada trials are now detained at the private corporate owned Nevada Southern Detention Facility in Pahrump, Nevada.  I give you a quick update as to the first trial which resulted in the judge calling a mistrial. But most importantly this show covers the recent incident that happened to Ammon Bundy late last week where he is currently incarcerated at the detention facility in Pahrump – which I can only describe as the torture of a prisoner of war.  The outrageous actions and abuse described herein needs the public’s awareness because this is the current state of affairs in prisons across this country, whether public or private prisons. Thanks for listening, Renegade Nation – as always, Everly Isbe LINKS: http://reignoftheheavens.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/05-03-17-pete-santilli-reports-concerning-ammon-ryan-bundy.pdf https://mainerepublicemailalert.com

Lost Arts Radio continues the search for outstanding patriots in government office, and this week is pleased to present Dr. Bryan Terry, state representative in the Tennessee legislature, who is working to honor his Oath of Office and protecting the God-given rights and freedoms of his constituents. We hope that our visit this week with Dr. Bryan Terry will inspire other Americans to get involved in the effort to bring government back into line with its true purpose in America. We are grateful to Dr. Bryan Terry for the spirit of his work in the Tennessee legislature, and showing us by his example that it is possible for individual citizens with the right motivation to get into office and help heal America with the messages of freedom, mutual respect and Constitutional government. The second half of this week's show will be to honor individual private citizens who are willing to put their lives and livelihoods on the line to bring personal freedom back to America and who realize the priority of protecting and defending the U.S. Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, just as our elected leaders swear to do, even though so many break their oaths immediately upon taking office. Lost Arts Radio is honored to have as our guests this week LaVoy Finicum and Cliven Bundy. LaVoy and Cliven are ranchers in Arizona and Nevada, respectively, who are taking a stand against illegal activity by the federal government, so that others may follow their example in demanding that the government servants who work for us all actually follow the Constitution, which they swear to obey. Many of us who did hear about the now famous standoff that occurred at the Bundy ranch between federal officials and local citizens may not understand in detail the issues that inspired so many to risk their lives in standing up for the truth.
