Cult Mom Lori Vallow asks the judge to be allowed to leave the courtroom as photos of the decomposing bodies of her two children are shown to the jury.  The judge denied the request. Vallow then turned away from the scene, keeping her eyes shut during the display. Rexburg Police Detective Ray Hermosillo testified that 16-year-old Tylee's body had been burned and destroyed, with the tissue remains placed in a partially melted plastic green bucket. JJ was wrapped in plastic, sealed by tape.  The search was reportedly so intense that officers got down on their "hands and knees" while digging. Cameron Sanders is a man of many hats. He's worn a spelunking helmet, a bicycle helmet, a race directors cap, and a work hat as the VP of Product Development and Marketing for Wren Sports. On this episode we focus on the Stetson hat he donned as a Park Ranger shortly after a armed group of far-right extremists seized and occupied the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, Oregon. Cameron went into a very difficult situation where tensions were high and a community was divide and, as a good outdoorsman, he left it better than he found it. Cameron used his love for public lands, the people who use them, and his love for exploring the world on his bike to help a community heal. That healing came by way of a gravel bike race that showcases the this region of Eastern Oregon in a whole new light. Journalist Leah Sottile, whose Bundyville podcast has delved into extremist anti-government activity across the American West, joins The Overcast to discuss the recent release of an investigative report accusing Washington state Rep. Matt Shea of engaging in domestic terrorism.

At his rally in Minneapolis earlier this week, President Trump received voluntary security from an unexpected source: the Oathkeepers, a far-right militia associated with the white supremacy movement. This isn’t the first time that the Trump administration has crossed paths with such groups, which have become more active in recent years.  To learn more about these groups, Lawfare senior editor Scott R. Anderson recently spoke with journalist Leah Sottile, who is the host of the podcast Bundyville, which does a deep dive on America’s far-right militia movement. Together, they discussed these groups’ origins and ideologies—and what they can tell us about homegrown radicalization in modern-day America. For the past few years, journalist Leah Sottile has been looking at the question of who owns public lands in the West. Her reporting began with the Bundy family, which infamously challenged the authority of the federal government on its ranch and then with an armed occupation of Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. That investigation resulted in the award-winning audio series Bundyville. Now, Sottile is back with a new project that begins with the case of a man named Glenn Jones, who in the summer of 2016 blew up the house of a friend and former coworker in the tiny town of Panaca, Nevada. To her surprise, she would come to learn that that bombing had roots in the very same conflict that began with the Bundys.

A new season of the "Bundyville" podcast from OPB and Longreads explores anti-government extremism beyond the Bundy family. Seven episodes will be available July 15. We'll hear from the journalists behind it — Leah Sottile and Ryan Haas.

I had an amazing conversation with the producer of "Bundyville", Ryan Haas. We talk to OPB's Ryan Haas about the occupation and how it foretold of deeper divisions in American communities.

Leah Sottile is a freelance writer who, most recently, authored and hosted Bundyville, a four-part story series and seven-episode podcast, which was presented by Longreads and Oregon Public Broadcasting. The project is the deepest dive yet into the Bundy family -- that’s the family that fought back against federal law enforcement officers out west not once, but twice, a few years ago -- and how they have become a symbol for those who feel the government is keeping them from living their true lives. Sottile's features, profiles and investigative work has been featured frequently by the Washington Post, Playboy, California Sunday, Outside Magazine and many more publications. Before freelancing, she was a staff writer at The Inlander, in Spokane, Washington, where she wrote about music, and was the host of two very late-night heavy metal radio programs.

In 2014, the federal government rounded up Cliven Bundy’s cattle over a matter of unpaid grazing fees. So the Bundy family gathered a posse and took them back at gunpoint. Two years later, they took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The Bundys are making a habit of taking on the federal government and winning.
