Building on her previous book, American Zion, Gaines Quammen follows the historical roots and trajectories of troubling political trends in the Western United States, decoupling the myths and material realities of the landscapes and the peoples and the more-than-human lives that occupy them. “True West explores myths of the West and how, if left unexamined, they distort the realities of the present and exacerbate polarizations. These misperceptions about land, politics, liberty, and self-determination threaten the wellbeing of western communities overrun by newcomers seeking a dream—and the country, unless America recognizes the dangers of building a national identity on illusion. Gaines Quammen interrogates it all by listening, carefully, to people from varying political and cultural perspectives as she seeks to reconcile the deep anger and broad misunderstandings that linger amid myths that define and impede the West and America.” Betsy Gaines Quammen is a historian and writer. She received a PhD from Montana State University where she studied religion, history and the philosophy of science. The Rational Egoist - Unraveling the Origins of Covid with David Quammen In this compelling episode of "The Rational Egoist," esteemed host Michael Liebowitz engages in a thought-provoking discussion with science, nature, and travel writer David Quammen. Together, they delve into the contentious origins of the Covid virus, exploring the two main theories surrounding its source. The first theory revolves around the possibility that the virus originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, potentially escaping during research. On the other hand, the second theory proposes a natural origin, suggesting cross-contamination from a wild animal into the human population. While the balance of evidence points towards a natural origin, public opinion seems to favour the lab leak theory, fuelled by conspiracy theories and false evidence circulated on the internet. The lack of a definitive progenitor virus similar to Covid adds to the complexity. Quammen highlights the need for accurate scientific investigation and the importance of educating the public on how science works. He addresses the provisional and self-correcting nature of scientific findings, which can be misconstrued by those skeptical of authority. Politicians' involvement and misrepresentation of science further contribute to the confusion. The podcast emphasises the significance of conclusively determining the origins of the virus through rigorous scientific methods to rebuild trust within society. Michael Leibowitz is a renowned philosopher, political activist, and the esteemed host of the Rational Egoist podcast. Inspired by the philosophical teachings of Ayn Rand, Leibowitz passionately champions the principles of reason, rational self-interest, and individualism, seeking to empower others through his compelling work. His life's narrative exemplifies the transformative power of Ayn Rand's writings. Having faced challenging circumstances that led to a 25-year prison sentence, Leibowitz emerged from adversity by embracing the tenets of rational self-interest and moral philosophy put forth by Ayn Rand. This profound transformation propelled him to become an influential figure in the libertarian and Objectivist communities, motivating others to adopt reason, individualism, and self-interest in their own lives. Beyond his impactful podcasting endeavors, Leibowitz fearlessly engages in lively political debates, advocating for the protection of individual rights and freedoms through compelling YouTube videos and insightful interviews. His unwavering commitment to these ideals has garnered him a dedicated following of like-minded individuals. Leibowitz is a versatile author, co-authoring the thought-provoking book titled "Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime." This groundbreaking work delves into societal attitudes surrounding punishment and rehabilitation, shedding light on how misguided approaches have contributed to the rise of crime and recidivism. Additionally, he has authored the book "View from a Cage: From Convict to Crusader for Liberty," offering an intimate portrayal of his personal journey while exploring the philosophies that influenced his transformation. David stops by to discuss just how he predicted a global zoonotic viral pandemic in his book "Spillover" all the way back in 2012, the lessons we've learned (or not learned) about pandemic preparedness in the aftermath of COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2, why bats are such notable reservoir hosts, and much more, including his new page-turner "The Heartbeat of the Wild" about his years of globetrotting the very wildest places on the planet Earth while reporting for National Geographic Magazine. Please enjoy this swashbuckling thriller of an episode with David Quammen. Three-time winner of the National Magazine Award (the Ellie) and author of 17 previous books, David Quammen is one of the world's top science writers. His 2012 book "Spillover", which predicted a worldwide pandemic, was shortlisted for eight national and international book awards, and won three, including the Premio Letterario Merck, in Rome. That book, and his 2022 book "Breathless: The Scientific Race to Defeat a Deadly Virus", have made him one of the most sought-after commentators on the coronavirus. His newest book, 2023's "The Heartbeat of the Wild: Dispatches from Landscapes of Wonder, Peril & Hope" (National Geographic Books), is his inspiring collection of essays from some of the planet's wildest locales, imparting how keeping remote regions alive and well—even as human activities encroach upon them—is essential to our future. Throughout 21 tales, from two decades of his assignments with National Geographic, Quammen takes readers to places where civilization meets raw nature and explores the challenge of balancing the needs of both. Each piece has been revised to reflect current observations and linked with an awareness of the bigger conservation story that together they tell. David is a regular contributor of features and Op Eds to National Geographic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and other journals. He lives in Bozeman, Montana.

"Viruses are the dark angels of evolution, terrific and terrible, without which, the immense biological diversity gracing our planet would collapse."In 2013 veteran science writer David Quammen wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times titled, The Next Pandemic: Not if, but When?  Seven years later he found himself writing about the horrors of the very thing he had foretold, as the Covid-19 virus surged throughout our world. This week, continuing our special Zoonotic Disease In the Spotlight month, David joins us for a second time round to discuss his book BREATHLESS: The Scientific Race to Defeat a Deadly Virus. BREATHLESS  is the story of SARS-CoV-2 and its fierce journey through the human population, as seen by the scientists who study its origin, its ever-changing nature, and its capacity to kill us.Through conversations with 95 expert scientists, David examines how Covid and other strange viruses emerge from other animals and infect we human apes, leading to global catastrophe.  This week on Talking Apes, we ask David:How did Covid-19 start? How are bats linked to Covid-19? Why do bats cause pandemics? Why do zoonotic diseases emerge from wet markets? Are all viruses bad?Did governments respond badly to the Covid-19 crisis? How can we prevent future pandemics?  Click HERE to visit David Quammen's Website. So dust off that library card, crack open that e-reader, fire up those earbuds, do whatever it takes to get yourself ready for the nerdiest book club yet. We're starting off this book club strong with a discussion of Breathless: The Scientific Race to Defeat a Deadly Virus, the latest book by award-winning science writer David Quammen (@DavidQuammen). Breathless recounts the fascinating - and sometimes frightening - story of how scientists sought to uncover the secrets of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID. In this interview, Quammen, whose 2012 book Spillover explores the increasing pathogen exchange occurring among humans, wildlife, and domestic animals, shares with us how he decided to write Breathless and why this story of discovery needs to be told. Our conversation takes us into musings over why we saw this pandemic coming yet could not keep it from happening, the controversy over the origins of SARS-CoV-2, and the question of whether future pandemics are preventable or inevitable. Through this discussion, we find that the global response to future pandemics depends just as much on locating the gaps in our knowledge about this virus as it does on applying what we have learned so far. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 23, 2022 is: vamoose • vuh-MOOSS • verb Vamoose is an informal word that means "to depart quickly." // With the sheriff and his posse hot on their tails, the bank robbers knew they had better vamoose. See the entry > Examples: "[Ali S.] Khan's group packed fast and vamoosed on a small airplane, which rose straight into a thrashing thunderstorm." — David Quammen, The New Yorker, May 4, 2020 Did you know? In the 1820s and '30s, the American Southwest was rough-and-tumble territory—the true Wild West. English-speaking cowboys, Texas Rangers, and gold prospectors regularly rubbed elbows with Spanish-speaking vaqueros in the local saloons, and a certain amount of linguistic intermixing was inevitable. One Spanish term that caught on with English speakers was vamos, which means "let's go." Cowpokes and dudes alike adopted the word, at first using a range of spellings and pronunciations that varied considerably in their proximity to the original Spanish form. But when the dust settled, the version most American English speakers were using was vamoose.
