For most of us the presidential race is top of mind. But voters on Tuesday will also decide which party controls Congress. Across the country, 34 Senate seats and all 435 House seats are contested in this election. In a historically tight race, with Democrats controlling the Senate and Republicans holding a majority in the House by razor thin margins, a small number of races will decide which party controls each chamber of Congress. We'll talk to experts breaking down the battleground congressional races in California and nationwide. Guests: Jessica Taylor, Senate/Governors Editor, The Cook Political Report Nicholas Wu, congressional reporter, Politico Guy Marzorati, correspondent, KQED's California Politics and Government Desk

I'm spending a few days in coastal South Carolina where my friend Mal Hyman is working overtime on the "retail political trail" - having to get out to shake hands and meet people on-one-on as opposed to taking PAC money to flood TV and radio airwaves. It's a noble endeavor, but because of the size of his district, a gargantuan task that could be better alleviated by eliminating gerrymandering and uncapping The House, which he and I discuss a bit. Today, though, we mostly just get a sense of his "ground game," and part of that was his longtime friend, Randy Cahall, guitar in-hand, coming in for a couple weeks to help his buddy Mal out. Randy shares his talents (and a couple of really good protest movement-era songs. A nice change-of-pace from hearing me drone on and on, right? Oh, also the GOP-heavy Georgia Supreme Court smacked down state GOP efforts to save those 11th-hour MAGA-packed elections board rules. Sort of delicious to hear it from Marc Elias via Democracy Docket.

Why can't we all have that impact on one another?Anyway, Kyle has accidentally become the digital campaign manager for every underdog Democrat in America. Kyle, who started with a whopping 165 followers, now spends his days helping state representatives and congressional hopefuls go from obscurity to TikTok stardom faster than you can say "Leave No Dem Behind."Hawk and Kyle dive into the wild world of down-ballot races, where candidates are battling MAGA Republicans, restrictive state laws, and the occasional desert (both information and actual) to get their message out. They discuss everything from tattoo-based fundraising to the awkward possibility of Ron DeSantis having to swear in Florida's first trans state representative. It's like a political circus, but with more TikTok dances and fewer elephants. As they wrap up, Kyle reveals that his TikTok magic has helped candidates raise thousands of dollars and gain tens of thousands of followers. Meanwhile, the host encourages listeners to follow Kyle's account and binge-watch his videos like it's the latest Netflix series, but with more democracy and less chill. Who knew that scrolling through TikTok could make you feel hopeful about politics? The three year anniversary of President Joe Biden's INSANELY TERRIBLE military withdrawal from Afghanistan is upon us and host Mike Slater takes some time to look back at the senseless loss of American life that happened because of the foolish actions of one careless leader and ponder why Donald Trump's alleged actions at a cemetery are getting more attention than it in today's political world.Following the opener, Congressman Tom Emmer (R-MN-06) joins the show to talk about the various congressional races that are happening around the country and explain what he's doing as Republican House Majority Whip to combat those nutty leftists in the House of Representatives!
In today's show we explore key Congressional races in key battleground states. Two Trump endorsed candidates share how cost of living and the economic hardships created by the Biden/Harris administration is the number one issue voters are concerned about. Ryan Mackenzie is running in Pennsylvania, District 7, where Susan Wild has voted for open borders. Inflation in Lehigh County (where she represents) shows 47% of households are struggling with everything from housing to healthcare. Mackenzie discusses all the issues important to Pennsylvanians, including fracking and election integrity. New legislation has been passed in Pennsylvania to ensure a fair election and stripped the PA Governor of some of the executive powers he abused in 2020. In Nevada, Drew Johnson is up against Susie Lee. Susie is a multi-millionaire that has voted to increase tax on tips and open borders. Drew Johnson is convinced Sam Brown will beat Jackie Rosen, he will beat Susie Lee and Donald Trump will take Nevada! Rev. and I are so excited to continue the Vegas series. This one features a good friend in Johnny Olszewski Jr. Johnny O, as he is often referred to, is the current Baltimore County Executive, a position he has held since December 2018. Born and raised in Dundalk, Maryland, Olszewski is deeply connected to the Baltimore County community. He attended Sparrows Point High School before earning his bachelor's degree from Goucher College and later a master's degree in political science from The George Washington University. He also holds a doctorate in public policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Before becoming County Executive, Olszewski served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 2006 to 2014, representing District 6. During his time in the General Assembly, he was known for his focus on education, economic development, and environmental issues. His leadership in Baltimore County has been marked by efforts to increase government transparency, improve public education, and address issues of equality and inclusion within the county. Johnny O is the Democratic nominee for Congress in the 2nd District. His roots are deep when it comes to our Government, both local and at the state level. He grew up in a family that elevated service, was elected to the legislature when he was 23....now 41 and working hard on his Congressional Race. Johnny shines a light on his education and all that it brought to his life. We talk about the Bridge and the positive light it has shined on our City and the effort at all levels of Government to bring the relief to that community. It's Johnny O, a kid that grew up in Dundalk, a hard working patriotic community. Next stop, Congress. We love ya Johnny!

New York holds a special election today to fill a seat vacated by Democratic Congressman Brian Higgins. The Democrat in the race, state Sen. Tim Kennedy, is expected to win. If he does, it would leave Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson's majority as slim as possible: a single vote. Todd Zwillich, a longtime Washington journalist and friend of the show, explains how it will make Johnson's job even more complicated. And in headlines: Columbia University began suspending students at the Gaza solidarity encampment, a federal appeals court ruled that certain state insurance plans must provide coverage for gender-affirming care, and the Supreme Court refused to hear billionaire and Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk's bid to challenge the SEC's restrictions on what he can post on social media.
