There's a little-known truth: public health saved your life today and you probably don't even know it. Public health makes our lives safer and helps us live longer, but its many successes largely go unrecognized. No small wonder it's called “the invisibleshield” in a PBS documentary that aired last month. Former Director of the Ohio Department of Health, Amy Acton, M.D., discusses the important role Public Health plays in our lives. But underfunding and lack of public awareness are constant challenges. With Dr. Acton's foresight, Ohio got through the Covid-19 pandemic, while politicians wanted to deny what science called for, which heightened the dangers brought by the disease. The question is, will we be ready for the next challenge?
Optimal Health Series Human beings are wired for social connections, but when those connections are few, our health pays the price. The U.S. is suffering from a loneliness epidemic, and the toll it takes on our health is both enormous and measurable. In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness and isolation a “public health emergency,” saying loneliness can increase the risk for premature death to levels comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The Surgeon General's startling advisory found that poor social connections can raise the risk of heart disease by 29%, increase the risk of stroke by 32%, and increase the risk of developing dementia in older adults by 50%. There is hope: leaders across Ohio are working to combat loneliness, to re-establish connections lost during the pandemic, and create new resources to reduce social isolation. This thought-provoking panel discussion tackles the loneliness epidemic in Ohio and its profound health and societal implications, including actionable strategies to build socially connected communities that can thrive, enjoy better health outcomes, and develop resilience in the face of loneliness. Despite the immense loss and often nasty politics that set in a few months into Ohio's pandemic response, former Director of the Ohio Department of Health, Dr. Amy Acton insists that there was far more love than hate in those early months. Despite the challenges we face, she wants Ohioans to reflect on how much they accomplished together and think about what the means for the state moving forward. On Episode 134 of Prognosis Ohio, more than three years after she stepped down after leading Ohio's COVID-19 response in 2020, Acton joins Prognosis Ohio to talk with Dan Skinner about what perspective and insight a few years of processing the experience have given her. Topics in the state of public health preparedness in Ohio, and what Ohio needs to do to start not only learning important lessons from our state's collective experience with COVID, but to grieve. Hi, there Nonstop Nonprofit listeners! Today's interview offers insight into an unlikely pairing of nonprofit passion and for-profit practice. It's a method of leading and growing nonprofits that's largely unused in the nonprofit sector: EOS. Amy Acton, CEO at Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, implemented this aggressive growth system to expand PBS' community and visibility to more than one million burn survivors, and it's been a game-changer for them.EOS, or Entrepreneurial Operating System, is more often used by for-profit startups because of its dynamic strategy, but when combined with the passion and dedication that nonprofit people possess, it has the potential to propel exponential growth.Over her decades with PBS, Amy has been a part of an unstoppable team with a mission to unite the voices of the global burn community—and they make it happen through some of the most innovative swing-for-the-fences concepts and experimentation that we've ever seen.If you're looking for an explosive episode to break your nonprofit from its self-imposed bonds, this is a must-listen. And lucky you, you'll have the whole summer to work on your exciting plans because Nonstop Nonprofit is on hiatus until September! Thank you, listener, for your continued support—we can't wait to bring you new and exciting leaders in Season 4 of the Nonstop Nonprofit podcast.

You probably remember Amy Acton from her daily press conferences back in the spring of 2020, when she used colorful language metaphors and a general sense of compassion to guide Ohioans through one of the most uncertain times in our history. But it was a challenging job for Acton, who left the role in June, 2020, and returned to her previous employer, The Columbus Foundation. Then, like many in the workforce over the past few years, she took a big career leap. Joining the newly launched Rapid 5 non-profit earlier this year as its first CEO. Acton is my guest this week, but she's not alone; she brought with her Jennifer Peterson, who likewise left her job as a Chief Executive at Easton, to join the organization as COO. The pair are just a few days apart in age, so the effort to better connect central Ohioans to the region's waterways fits their passions at this stage of life.

This will be done In lieu of this year's Phoenix World Burn Congress, to ensure the organization can reach survivors where they are in their journey. “By switching up the format of our burn community engagements to be more frequent throughout the year we are able to nurture relationships within our community and continually educate and support survivors where they are at,” said Amy Acton, CEO of Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors. “These monthly Engage sessions will create a space for survivors and loved ones to cultivate and learn together while having the safe space to share their experiences.” The first full-day event was held on May 14, 2022. The event kicked off with a mainstage presentation from Amy Acton, CEO of Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, Huyen “Kiki” Vo, Survivor, Burn Advocate, and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and many more. Upcoming sessions will offer survivors the opportunity to share through the open mic portion, educate themselves through new learning sessions, participate in support groups specific to their needs, and expand their network through virtual gatherings. The panelists will explore conversations around recovery, even from the earliest of stages, to their most meaningful accomplishments, as well as their advice for bringing your own vision to life. “I look forward to sharing my path to giving back to the burn community, knowing that wherever you are in your own journey to healing and recovery, taking the next step through sessions like these will help you become the leader only you can be,” said Huyen “Kiki” Vo. “After the horrific fire killed my mother and injured me, my family came to the U.S. to seek the medical care necessary for survival. From there we decided to stay and seek education and work all the while dealing with the deeply flawed immigration system. My hope is that by sharing my experiences, with the Phoenix Survivors that others too, will be able to pursue their goals.” Each Phoenix Engage event will focus on various topics including workshops on leadership coaching and mentorship, publishing and telling your story to inspire others, deepening the conversation on the long-term effects of a burn injury, and so much more. Follow Up Sessions - All held virtually at 8 pm EST on the following dates: ● June 9, 2022 ● July 14, 2022 ● August 11, 2022 ● September 8, 2022 ● October 13, 2022 ● November 10, 2022 Registration ($30) includes access to all events, on-demand recordings throughout the year, an upgraded attendee directory, private one-on-one chats, and virtual attendee meet-ups as well as connections throughout and to the global burn community. On March 12 Dr. Amy Acton reported on live television that she KNEW the real number of infected Ohioans was over 100,000 people and that the number would likely double every 4 days if we do not take action immediately! For the past month our leaders in Columbus (Governor DeWine) have been increasing their authority, closing businesses and limiting movement of free citizens based on the assumption that on March 12 we had over 100,000 infected in the state. Today we have a little over 3,000. A real actual number reported by...the State Department Of Health! It has been almost a month and we have 3,000 cases which is nowhere close to the 100,000 with the number doubling every 4 days since March 12. So, you can view this as a HUGE SUCCESS because we went from 100,000 down to just over 3,000 in a month. It is time to Congratulate Dr. Amey Acton and to learn some lessons and begin to get our lives back to normal, observing safe distances and workplace knowledge and acceptance of longer term sick-leave or work from home arrangements for those feeling ill or taking care of family who still need to be at home!

NARAL's The Morning After is a production of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. This week, Gabe and Jaime traveled to the US Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati. The Down syndrome abortion ban signed into law by former Gov. John Kasich was immediately blocked by federal courts. The appeal by Gov. Mike DeWine's Department of Health challenging the stoppage called for an en banc review, which means the case was heard by all SIXTEEN judges of the appeals court at one time, instead of the usual three judge panel. The state's argument was presented by attorney Ben Flowers and joined by an addition from the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division attorney, Alexander Maugeri. The plaintiff, Preterm, was represented by attorney and Case professor, Jessie Hill. The state of Ohio is arguing many positions, first being that this abortion ban somehow isn't an abortion ban. They feel that it applies to doctors and not women, so the women aren't impacted. (We note that the entire trial, and our discussion of it, was entirely using gendered language. This isn't a principal shared by NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, but it's not our court.) A second position of the state, and several male judges on the court, is that women won't be impacted by this ban because they can just dodge it by not informing their doctor why they are seeking an abortion. Prof. Hill pointed out that asking patients to hide information from doctors is not sound health care policy.
