Is banning smoking outdoors good for our health or state overreach? The Prime Minister has confirmed he's thinking about extending the indoor smoking ban to include outdoor areas restaurant terraces and pub gardens. This, in addition, to plans to progressively increase the age at which you can buy cigarettes so a whole generation never even starts smoking. It's sparked a social media discussion on personal freedom, the nanny state and the removal of civil liberties. But others argued that it would improve health, help the NHS and de-normalise smoking. Headlines about wars in Ukraine and Gaza have flooded front pages - yet, the "world's biggest humanitarian crisis" is battling for media attention. Why?  In Sudan, a terrible war is raging. What started as a conflict between the Sudan Armed forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has exploded into chaos and bloodshed, with countless militias, ethnic massacres, and foreign proxy self-interest. Over 25 million people face acute hunger. Nearly 11 million have been displaced. And the death count is suspected to be as high as five times as high as in Gaza. But if you were to judge by how much international attention Sudan gets - either from the media, politicians, or humanitarian donors - you wouldn't realise this is happening before the world's eyes.  Joining Media Storm this week is Sudanese activist and the man behind the social media platform Sudan Updates, Ameen Mekki. We are also joined by Sudanese refugee, public speaker, and charity worker Gaida Dirar, to discuss how British colonial history played a part in Sudan's present-day difficulties - and why the war is as urgent to Western audiences as any other. Plus, your week's Media Storms: panic about a potential pub garden smoking ban, an extracted anecdote from Jess Phillips that apparently provided proof of a 'two-tier NHS', misleading claims about crime at Notting Hill Carnival, and the voices missing in Israel-Palestine coverage: though they may not be the voices you think.  Hosts: Mathilda Mallinson (@mathildamall) and Helena Wadia (@helenawadia) Music: Samfire (@soundofsamfire) Assistant Producer: Katie Grant Episode research: Camilla Tiana Support Media Storm on Patreon! In this episode of the IEA Podcast, host Reem Ibrahim is joined by Kristian Niemietz and Tom Clougherty to dissect recent political developments through a classical liberal lens. The panel critically examines Labour's controversial plan to ban smoking in outdoor areas, including pub beer gardens, questioning the justification and potential consequences of such nanny state interventions. They also delve into the implications of the Next equal pay dispute, highlighting the disconnect between economic reasoning and legal judgments in employment tribunals. The conversation takes a broader turn as the guests explore the shifting landscape of political ideologies. They discuss how traditional definitions of 'liberal' no longer apply in today's context, with both the left and right embracing forms of authoritarianism and interventionism. The panel contemplates the challenges faced by classical liberals in finding political allies and considers the potential for a new movement centered on freedom, dynamism, and progress. Throughout the episode, Niemietz, Clougherty, and Ibrahim offer insightful commentary on the erosion of personal freedoms, the unintended consequences of well-intentioned policies, and the importance of maintaining a commitment to free-market principles. Their discussion provides a nuanced perspective on current affairs, challenging listeners to think critically about the role of government in society and the future of liberal thought. We bring you a public affairs podcast with a difference. We want to get beyond the headlines and instead focus on the big ideas and foundational principles that matter to classical liberals. The Government has stepped in after it was revealed police have intentionally not been enforcing a law banning smoking and vaping in cars carrying children.  NZME can reveal not a single fine has been issued since the law came into force in 2021, with police saying fines are punitive and unlikely to work.  It can also be revealed police never carried out the necessary system upgrades to issue fines, despite Parliament delaying the law coming into force for 18 months to allow for the updates.  The law was passed by the Labour-led coalition in 2020 with support from National. It allowed officers to use their discretion to issue $50 spot fines.  Police Minister Mark Mitchell told Mike Hosking that the Police's advice to the Police Minister at the time the law was passed was that the system couldn't sustain the change.  He said that Police are now making the changes to the systems so that fines can be issued.  Labour's Ginny Andersen said that from her understanding, while they knew the Police couldn't implement it immediately there was a plan to do so over time that the Government was happy with.  She said she's pleased that Mitchell is enforcing it and taking a stand, as the current Government has been very permissive around smoking by letting Smoke Free go.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Police Association says officers' workloads are big enough without enforcing smoking and vaping bans.   Newstalk ZB has revealed in the four years since a law banning smoking and vaping in cars with children was passed, no one has been fined or summonsed to court.   Association President Chris Cahill says there are much more important things for police to focus on.   He told Mike Hosking police are damned if they do and damned if they don't.   Cahill believes as soon as police start enforcing fines, there would be immediate questions about equity and whether the fines were given out fairly.  He said officers already have to deal with breath testing, retail crime, beat work and fighting the gangs.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pet Shop Boys: Then and Now - BBC Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are the most successful duo in UK Music history. They have sold more than 50 million records, produced over 40 Top 40 singles, four UK number ones, performed in several world tours, and they are still making new music together. Their songs have often commented on Britain and the world around them with wit, sensitivity and intelligence driving the stories they want to share through some of the most memorable synth-pop music ever created. For their tours they have worked with the most innovative theatre personnel to create original and thrilling performances. Now for the first time they have allowed backstage access as imagine… accompanies them on their global Dreamworld tour, filming rehearsals in London and backstage in Helsinki. Contributors include fellow musicians Brandon Flowers, Jake Shears, Olly Alexander, Marc Almond; music journalist Miranda Sawyer, and creative collaborators Stuart Price, James Ford, Es Devlin, Javier De Frutos, Tom Scutt and Mark Farrow. https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/proginfo/2024/16/imagine-pet-shop-boys  David The Biggest Prison on Earth: A History of Gaza and the Occupied Territories - Ilan Pappé  A powerful, groundbreaking history of the Occupied Territories from one of Israel's most influential historians From the author of the bestselling study of the 1948 War of Independence comes an incisive look at the Occupied Territories, picking up the story where The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine left off. In this comprehensive exploration of one of the world's most prolonged and tragic conflicts, Pappe uses recently declassified archival material to analyse the motivations and strategies of the generals and politicians – and the decision-making process itself – that laid the foundation of the occupation. From a survey of the legal and bureaucratic infrastructures that were put in place to control the population of over one million Palestinians, to the security mechanisms that vigorously enforced that control, Pappe paints a picture of what is to all intents and purposes the world's largest ‘open prison'. https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-biggest-prison-on-earth/ilan-pappe/9781786073419  Strangers in the House - Raja Shehadeh  Raja Shehadeh was born into a successful Palestinian family with a beautiful house overlooking the Mediterranean. When the state of Israel was formed in 1948 the family were driven out to the provincial town of Ramallah. There Shehadeh grew up in the shadow of his father, a leading civil rights lawyer. He vowed not to become involved in politics or law but inevitably did so and became an important activist himself. In 1985 his father was stabbed to death. The Israeli police failed to investigate the murder properly and Shehadeh, by then a lawyer, set about solving the crime that destroyed his family. In Strangers in the House, Shehadeh recounts his troubled and complex relationship with his father and his experience of exile - of being a stranger in his own land. It is a remarkable memoir that combines the personal and political to devastating effect. https://www.waterstones.com/book/strangers-in-the-house/raja-shehadeh/9781846682506

It's a week of good news for the people in Ireland, whether they like it or not, as they breathe the fresh air that comes with banning smoking in pubs and clubs. Although some may argue that it was a rather anti-social initiative, the people who didn't have to breathe the passive smoke found it much easier to hold a conversation. Not so good news for military contractors in Fallujah however when a mission to guard a catering truck ended in the deaths and mutilation of 4 Blackwater employees. The ambush that took place was a precursor to the First Battle Of Fallujah, where the US would attempt to take control of the city, however politics got in the way and it ultimately was seen as a victory to the insurgents by many.In sport Australia's Libby Lenton broke Inge de Bruijn's 100m women's freestyle record at the Australian Olympic trials in Sydney. We also take a look at what Libby has been up to recently with her activism against body shaming women in sport. In tech Google introduced Gmail on April Fool's Day and everyone thought they were joking. They were however quite serious.America Idol runner up Clay Aiken entered the Billboard top 5 this time 20 years ago, however now you'd find him having a crack at politics, with mixed results. While Anastasia told us how it really feels to be left outside alone and Janet Jackson's ‘Damita Jo' has short lived success due to no promo from the record company in the wake of #nipplegate.Scooby Doo 2 tops the box office, in spite of a poor reviews for the prequel and the hideous addition of Scrappy Doo. When former Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern passed legislation to reduce access to tobacco products, the policy was held up as an international example. So there was shock among health experts in New Zealand and across the world this week when the newly sworn in Government announced they would be scrapping the plans. Claudia Hammond asks Janet Hoek, Professor of Public Health at the University of Otago what the international impact will be. She hears from the people who hear music when nothing is playing. Professor of cognitive neurology at Newcastle University, Tim Griffiths, describes what might be happening in the brain to cause these musical hallucinations. Claudia is also joined by public health expert Dr Tabitha Mwangi to discuss new research from Tanzania where health experts are collaborating with religious leaders to provide family planning services. They look ahead to COP28 in the United Arab Emirates where the climate conference will hold its first ever ‘Health Day'.
